At age 50 I found myself a single adult due to divorce. I also discovered a more frank relationship with 2 other generations of singles in my family: My widowed Mom and my Young Single Adult daughter. I found though our ages were different our problems and concerns were very similar.
I also commend the author of this series.
I was shocked that my emotions seemed to be as fragile and complex as when a teen: Fantastic peaks of joy and elation when finding someone attractive who returns the attraction, deep droughts of despair when relationships end or "Blow up in your face".
The last paragraph of this series said it best for my experience:
"People don't like to be alone at night, he says. This is what he has missed since his wife died, and this is what he longs for as he's lying in bed in the middle of the night: He wants to reach over and touch someone and know, in this moment, that he's not alone".

I have cut these articles out of the paper to share with my children. I am 76 years old and they are meaningful. I would like to find them as you claim, "online at deseretnews.com. Click on the icon reading, 'Not the same old stories.'" O.K. so where is it?
Priscilla Paul - a great aunt! | 7:30 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I was so thrilled to read the paper today and see my dear aunt's name on the front page. Priscilla Paul has been like a mother to me. She was my father's office manager for my fathers medical practice Hollywood for 25 years until his death.

Priscilla never married, but because of a great family organization she is now surrounded by caring cousins her nieces and nephews - who take great care of her.

I called her today to congratulate her on being famous with her name on the front page. She was so cute, and we laughed about it has taken 96 years to get her name in the paper, and it wasn't her obituary!

Thanks to the Deseret News for a truly informative and valuable series of articles on aging!

Elaine Jarvik | 7:49 p.m. Dec. 22, 2008
I too applaud the Deseret Morning News for the series, but keep in mind, it is Elaine Jarvik's research, reporting and writing that make this series.

She wrote a story about a man - it was more than 10 years ago - which caused my wife and I to adopt the phrase "hug therapy." Her stories are always riveting, captivating.

I would applaud the Deseret Morning News for hiring Elaine Jarvik, and give the credit for the series.

I want to thank Deseret Morning News with attacking this Issue Honestly and Well. All is Not Roses in the Golden Years. A 62 I have found nothing good yet about getting old.

I had an Aunt that just Died a few months ago at 109 years of age. She lived in a Senior Apartment up until the last. She did have family, and friends and was not alone.

When I talked to her on the Phone she was full of Vim and Vigor.

She said she had not spoken to my Father in many years. I told her that he had died in 1995 at 92 in good health mostly until the last.

At 62 I have Older Friends 75, 84, and I can see them decline. I also have younger friends, and Childern who are just Now 18 and 19, plus I am raising MY 13 YEAR OLD Grandson.

You must stay active or not mind being alone. My wife sometimes works graveyard shift for a quarter at a time and after a while I miss the warm person and look forward to off days. Howerver Afternoon Delight is our Song.

The Computer can really help.

Leroy, if you go to the Deseret News' home page, www.deseretnews.com, and doubleclick on the picture of the older woman (on the right hand side, mid page) under the title not the same old stories, it will take you to the series in its entirety.
