What glory has UA had in football other than the random bowls here or there? It is not much of a comparison to compare UA's football success or lack of it to the Y since Y is one of the all time great programs in NCAA football with multiple national championships and perenially recruiting the top recruits from all over the country.
Ute Fan | 6:42 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
What a bad year to be a Ute fan...we have to wait until January 2nd to play our bowl game...The Coogies get to play today. That surely sucks...I wish I were a Coogie fan so I could get this game out of the way on December 20th and have plenty of time to recover before Christmas. Question to Coog Nation....

Does BYU always playing in the "pioneer" bowl? Or is it just a coincidence? BYU? Pioneer? If it is their own personal bowl, they may want to consider calling it the "Days of '47 Bowl"...or the "All Is Well Bowl"?

Pioneer Bowl could be confused with the audio company...if the Coogie's have their own bowl they should change the name to something that makes it easy to understand that they do in fact own it.

"Lavell's Silent Wonder Bowl"? The "Al Bundy...We were good in 1980 Bowl"..."The We Had A Heisman Trophy Once Bowl"...

Pioneer is just plain weird...(not a weird as the "Northern Part of San Diego County Credit Union and Other Non-Regulated Financial Institution Bowl"...that the Utes played in recently...

Go Win Coogie's....

I THINK THE ODDS MAKERS HAVE REALLY MISSED THIS ONE. IF YOU CAN BET HERE, TAKE BYU.

Go Cougars!
RE: Matt | 7:37 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
The article is talking about the last few years....not the entire history of college football. The Y couldn't hold a candle to the az desert swarm team of the 90's headed by Teddy bruschi. But this article isn't talking about those teams. So go lay down and chill until the game.

good luck byu and all MWC teams
sob | 8:23 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
hey matt, byu has won how many "multiple national championships"?
one by default i think

to the 1% of the country who care about this bowl
i hope that you guys wont shame the mwc with a last second block to win by one point against another bottom to middle pac 10 school
Speed Kills | 8:48 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
The faster team will win this one. Arizona by 3.
It Never Fails | 8:55 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
....that some overzealous Ute fan will love to troll and Post their garbage on an article on BYU and their opponent, where it does not even mention Utah. Dont make a bad name for yourselves.....just try to maintain the comment boards to the article itself. Don't ruin it for your own fans as well as everyone else.
Drew | 8:56 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
byu will lose to Arizona and I will dance on the shards of the cougar's broken dreams from a broken season.
To Ute Fan: | 9:05 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Dearest Ute Fan,

Thank you for being such an awesome fan this year. You truly made the difference in your teams success this year. Surely, your tough words are representative of your whole fan base on a good year for you. Everyone is just as proud of you as they are for your team. You are exactly what gives those, like yourself, such a good name. Keep up the good work and the great sportsmanship.

Disappointed

This just in...in the south endzone under the bleachers they're offering a new item on the menu:
The "Max Hall" Turnover. You get 6 for the price of 1.
Re: Drew | 9:24 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Get a life! it's embarrassing that your whole existence focuses around BYU.
Third Party Observer | 9:28 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
In the months of September and October I did some work on the U and Y campuses and noticed something that these comments seem to confirm. When in Provo I noticed that those students LOVE the Cougars. When in Salt Lake I noticed that the students didn't really care much for their team until it looked like they might break into the BCS. Even then, for every cheer for their team I heard at least 3 jeers against the Cougars. That, along with these comments already left, tells me that the Cougar fans are true fans while the Ute fans could care less about there team (I cite the game attendance after Utah had lost 4 games last year) as long as they can see the Cougars in pain. Shame. I wish I could say it was the other way around after what the Cougars did to my Bruins this year.
UTWildcat | 9:34 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
This is such a hard game for me. Its hard having loalties to both teams. I am an Arizona Alum and BYU Fan.

I hope both teams have a good game, but my gut says Arizona will win.

RE: DREW | 9:34 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
KARMA Drew, KARMA!!!
akk | 9:47 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
If BYU loses to a 7-5 Arizona team they should be embarrassed. This game is a no win situation for BYU. It is not redemption... rather a game that they should win.
BYU Excels Against the Unranked | 9:44 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
During the Bronco era, the kUUgs are something like 30-3 against unranked teams.

The University of Arizona is unranked. Therefore I like the kUUgs' chances against the Wildcats.

If the Wildcats were ranked it would be a different story, since the kUUgs are 1-20 against ranked teams over the last 10 years.

Matt,

YOu are very funny. You are very clever. Enjoy your great season, you deserve it.
Basketball anyone??!! | 10:11 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Why the complete disregard for the basketball team who has a huge game with another PAC 10 Arizona school? There was one article today on Cummard, but not the game. Shame on the Desnews sports writers for completely ignoring the team. Football season ended at Rice Eccles season. I for one am not too excited for the Vegas bowl, but am excited for the undefeated basketball team.
Dear Ute Fans | 10:21 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Next year:
B.J.: Gone
Who ever else: Gone
TCU: ON THE ROAD!
BYU: ON THE ROAD!

Oh Yeah, the best team by far you've played all season, NOT AT HOME!!!

What does it all mean? Enjoy the first few minutes of the Sugar Bowl. It will have to hold you over for a year or two!

As far as THIS GAME, BYU will win if they control the time on the clock and the turnovers.
GO COUGARS!!!!
Childish Bravado | 10:26 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
As I've read through the several posts, I'm reminded of grade school boys hurling challenges to each other, such as "my dad can beat-up your dad". In 5th grade, it was exciting to flash one's bravado, but to adults, it's boorish adolescent behavior.

Both BYU and the UU need each other to be successful. That's what makes the rivalry fun. The fan base of each school should enjoy their moment in the spotlight, but not at the expense of the other. I remember a day when good sportsmanship was more important than the final outcome. There are few things more ugly, than immaturity.
wellsaid3rdpartyo | 10:54 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
that's my impression too-both from when I lived in calif and since I moved to DAVIS county some time ago
BYU has loyal fans-The UofU has fans too but most of the loudest and most obnoxious -we call them YEWTS are fair weather fans whose sole purpose in life is to tear down and bad mouth anything thing to do with Utah county, the LDS church, BYU, sportsmanship or integrity.
it must be miserable to live a life based solely on hating the main religion in UTAH and a rival college
GO COUGARS!
GO UTES-the team. please don't embarrass the state of utah and all non bsc teams the way YEWTS do!
Re: akk | 11:03 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
This is a "no win" for both teams. If Arizona wins, it simply just a Mountain West team. If BYU wins, it's simply just a lousy 7-5 team that hasn't beat anyone this year.

I am not sure how the oddsmakeer put BYU as a 3 point dog. I am a Utah fan that hates to cheer for BYU but I want our conference and state to do well. If BYU loses, we'll simply have to listen to the infutility of our conference. Don't lose!
Unrelated Question | 11:12 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Does anyone know if Manase Tonga will be back with the team next year? He was a great asset to the Offensive.
Pioneer Bowl | 11:15 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
The Pioneer Bowl is named after Pioneer, the stereo company. Not the Pioneers that moved to the west. Get a clue Yootie.

Sorry BYU but Arizona takes this one.
RE: TED | 11:51 a.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Ted is absolutely right. This is a sure money-maker. I asked my bishop if the rules on betting could be suspended just for this game so I could make some bucks. Lamentably, he told me no. I am really tempted to do it anyway and repent tomorrow (after my winnings are transferred to my account). BYU is so not going to lose. This is a great opportunity to make some money and support our team at the same time! It's just not an opportunity that I can pass up easily.

Re Wellsaid... | 1:28 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
I think you're completely wrong. I grew up in DAVIS county, graduated from DAVIS High, and I'm also LDS and knew many many many die hard Ute fans. I also knew many many many die hard Cougar fans. The big difference is when I would wear anything with a Utah logo, my BYU fan "friends" or church leaders would always redicule me and say I'm not a true Mormon. So do you really think it's only Utah fans bashing BYU fans because every Utah fan isn't a member of the church? Not only that, but do you also think it's acceptable for someone to challenge you faith and what you believe because of what school you choose to support or even attend? By the way, wasn't Elder Joseph B Wirthlin a longtime UTAH fan and a member of their football team? Go ahead and keep calling us "yewt" and little brother, all I'm going to say back is GROW UP AND LIVE WHAT YOU PREACH!
bob | 1:31 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Well, at least next year when we have a socialist at the top, (In Washington) and an eight game championship, they will give all the money to the teams with less than six wins! What could be more fair?
Third party observer | 1:28 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
Nice observations. Don't pretend to be something your not.
BYU always next year | 2:59 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008

Just an idea.... | 5:17 p.m. Dec. 20, 2008
there are plenty of wealthy Utahns who can more than afford to sponsor a bowl game right here in the State of Utah, so why not start the Pioneers Bowl?............Just idea, like I said....
