AK Cougar

Go Cougars, let's go win this one for another 11 W season.

I really hope Max doesn't think he has to force any passes, but trust in his line for protection and in his recievers to find an open spot. It is better to throw the ball away when there isn't any play than to force the ball and end the play with with a poor pass or an interception. I hope he can keep a level head stay focused on the current play.

It is great to hear about the recruits for the next season and the holes that need filling. I wish I could go see this one in LV, but will have to watch on TV instead.

Yawn

BYU is still playing football?? Call me when these guys put a real team on the field. I'm a fully divested BYU alum (this stock has also plummeted since August).

BYU Fan

Hopefully he does better than he did against his 'current' rival.

Oh well, GO COUGARS!!

Matt in VA

The LV Bowl is a dead-end bowl in a small stadium at a bad time. We would fill up the Poinsetta bowl, play a better opponent, and with San Diego be in a much better location. It is time for us to move the first choice to the P-Bowl or buy our way into the Holiday bowl by offering to take only half the pay.

re: Matt in VA

Since LV Bowl is a dead-end bowl, byu as a dead-end team is a perfect perennial fit. Byu's history of not being able to compete outside the conference (look at horrendous bowl record) is what has kept the conference from securing descent bowl alliances.

Bear Down

This Arizona team is a lot better than people think and Hall is going to look like he did in the Utah-BYU game...confused. Arizona has so much speed on its defense Mr. Hall and company are going to be wishing they were playing Boise State instead of an underated Wildcat team.

Re: Yawn

A BYU alum? Suuurre you are. And I'm Kyle Whittingham.

The trolling by Ute fans in the comments for BYU stories is getting really obvious.

Bowl matchups tied to $$$

Las Vegas is a great bowl location for BYU because it's centrally located between largest BYU fan bases in Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California, only half-a-day's drive for the majority of fans.

The stadium is small, but the games are still fun.

Moving the MWC's 1st place team to the Poinsettia Bowl will NOT GUARANTEE a better bowl opponent. The PAC 10 sends their 4th or 5th place team to the Las Vegas Bowl and their 7th place team to the Poinsettia Bowl.

The only reason Boise State is going to the Poinsettia Bowl is because the PAC 10 doesn't have 7 bowl-eligible teams this season.

It might be possible to get the 3rd place PAC 10 team, IF, the payout was more than what the Sun Bowl pays, currently $1.9 million. That would require increasing the size of the Las Vegas Bowl stadium or moving the 1st place MWC team to the larger Poinsettia Bowl stadium.

PAC 10 Bowl Affiliations
#1-Rose Bowl-$18 million
#2-Holiday Bowl-$2.2 million
#3-Sun Bowl-$1.9 million
#4/5-Las Vegas-$1 million
alternates with:
#5/4-Emerald-$750,000
#6-Hawaii-$750,000
#7-Poinsettia-(if a 7th Pac-10 team is bowl eligible)-$750,000

Las Vegas could increase the stature of their bowl if they had a bigger/nicer stadium.

BYU Getting New Turf

I just read somewhere that BYU is actually going to get a new field for next years football team. They are actually installing a new material that looks and feels like paper. We all the the Cougars look better on PAPER.......

Mr. Interception?

If you'll recall, Mr. Interception himself was none other than Ty Detmer, and he won the Heisman.

Kind of makes you think, eh?

re: re: Matt in VA

BYU's bowl record has prevented the entire conference from securing decent bowl tie-ins? Spare me. Congrats for at least coming up with something new for Yewt smack, but do you actually have any evidence to back that naked assertion up?

weak smack from little brothers

day after day after day after day, the same weak smack from our little brothers up on the hill; they're so clueless that they don't even realize how boring they are -- like a bunch of 12-year-olds repeating the same moldy grade-school jokes that have been retold for the past 50 years and thinking they're actually being clever.

It's really quite pathetic!

Manti Te'o

I just noticed Utah isn't listed among the schools this blue-chip recruit is interested in.

How can this be? According to Yoot fans Utah is the premier football program in the MWC, if not the entire western US.

It's certainly better than the TDS; if he's interested in BYU, he surely must be interested in Utah as well.

This must be an example of poor reporting by the Deseret News. Or perhaps the Utes have soooo many good recruits already that they just don't have a slot for him and he knows it.

Hall needs to prove himself

The Arizona game means nothing other than a "prove me" game for Max Hall. Hall stunk up the field against TCU and Utah so this is Max's last chance of 08 to prove he can play against decent competition. A poor showing in the Vagas bowl might just open the door for a new cougar QB for the 09 season ... at least open to door for an open competition in spring ball.

like kissing your aunt

trying to get excited over the 08 Vegas bowl is like trying to get excited over the upcoming family Christmas party where you know aunt Margret will be waiting to kiss all her nephews.

WoW

All i can say is WOW! That comment tells you right there how dumb ute fans are!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Manti Te'o is the best linebacker in the entire country he is the number one recruit for defense and you think that utah doesn't want him! Thats about the dumbest thing i heard in a long long time! And the reason he doesn't have any interest in the utes is because they are the yewts! Oh by the way good luck in the sugar bowl! Haha your going to need it!

one small step .....

one small step for college football, one GIANT step for Max Hall. Yes the 08 Vagas bowl is Max Hall's make or break moment - even in his career quite possibly. After two stinky losses in 08 and a pathetic performance against the Yewts, Max has something to prove to Cougar fans as well as his fellow team mates.

re: Scott

Hall's actually put up decent passing numbers against the two best defenses he's seen, and I don't think that Arizona's D is as good as TCU or Utah. But you're right, he's got to move past some of his bad tendencies (thank goodness Anae forced him into a 3.5 hour film session of the Utah game).

To win the offensive battle in Vegas, 2 things will have to happen:
1. Hall needs to settle down, not force passes into coverage, stop telegraphing his throws, and learn that he has other options besides throwing downfield to numbers 9 and 32. Could be a tall order, but he's smart enough to do it if his ego will let him admit to his mistakes.
2. Anae needs to call a much more disciplined and balanced running game. Arizona has struggled against the power running game, BYU has two big backs, and Anae has to realize that running to open the passing game doesn't mean handing it to Unga twice and then throwing on the next dozen downs.

$8 for shipping?

Now I'm not a math major, but eight bucks to ship tickets? What baloney.

BYU Bowl Record

BYU has a losing bowl record because, historically, they have played very good teams (no in the LV Bowl, but the Holiday Bowl - Big Ten). I think BYU is 9-16-1 in bowl games. They've lost more bowl games than Utah has played in. It's not a stellar record, I admit. Utah has a better bowl record, but they have historically played weaker teams with 7-5, 8-4 records from weaker conferences in no-name bowls (because BYU, most often, or someone else won the conference championship). This will be Utah's FIRST bowl game against quality opposition. Remember, it has been BYU that paved the way for BCS busters by being shut out in 1996 and 2001. So, BYU's bowl record does not bring the conference down. That's a weak argument. For many years, BYU was the only reason the WAC/MWC had any credibility. Thankfully that is changing. We need a stronger conference.

Here's hoping that Utah doesn't embarrass the MWC!
