Shut up Already

Does this guy ever shut up? How many more stupid things will this guy do before he is actually sworn in? And I though Cannon was bad. Cannon was Great compared to this Moron.

Cats

Good for Jason. He's off to a good start.

Read the Constitution

To "shut up already", you are showing your ignorance of the Constitution. Go read it. Only States may send representatives to Congress. That's all Chaffetz is recognizing. He's not all powerful; he can't trample the Constitution, any more than you can.

We need less uninformed blabbing of the mouth "shut up already" and more informed reading and understanding before opening one's mouth. So to "shut up already," please do just that.

Thank you.

Then they shouldn't be taxed. Remember that saying: No taxation without representation.

No Fed income tax, no social security, no medicaid.

Cincinnatus

It seems here that Chaffetz is simply following Republican Party leadership (because D.C. would fall Democratic), and ultra-conservative think tanks.
He can use the "state" argument all he wants, but it doesn't fly. What about taxes "apportioned among the several states," or the "interstate" highway system, or "interstate commerce." Congress has already treated D.C. like a state in most ways, without actually calling it that. So people living in D.C. actually get treated like a state in most ways, except for representation. Chaffetz should try thinking for himself and avoid beating the dead horse that he did in the reporting of this story.

Lewt

This view of this issue is as predictable as the tides. If Chaffetz wants a headline he should prove his boldness by endorsing statehood for Puerto Rico. Viva!

Re.: Shut up @ 10:53am

Have you ever read the Constitution?

Rep. Chaffetz is right on this issue along with a few others.

The ones who are trying to get D.C. a voting rep. are the ones going against the Constitution ... a very dangerous path to walk towards!

D.C. already tried/is trying to ban guns, violation of the 2nd ammendment, what will be next?

Study the issues before "You" label the "Morons".

Dan Barrus

Jason. Congratulations. You are doing just what you said you would do and that is the reason I voted for you.

Good

Sound like Mr. Chaffetz Knows the constitution. Good for him. Looks like "Shut Up Already" doesn't. Maybe they should go back to school and study it a little bit before making such a comment.

I don't think Jason thinks things through. Who is helping this guy out?

jr

Lewt, make Puerto Rico and state and have them pay their fare share of taxes instead of draining the US taxpayer for welfare etc - good idea for sure, another welfare state

CORRECT CALL.

Absolutely correct call by Jason...DC is not a state and therefore should have no representation. Read their license plates (or the constitution), taxation without representation. maybe we need another teaparty except we can call it the Washington D.C. money give-away party.

Thank you Jason

Another reason I'm so glad we elected Mr. Chaffetz. He's outspoken and passionate. He's not afraid to clearly state his opinions. He's true to the principles he subscribes. What a breath of fresh air we have going to Washington! GO JASON!!!

Chaffetz' idea of giving the residential areas back to Maryland is a brilliant compromise...just exactly the kind of CHANGE in leadership the Utah Republican party was looking for. Fresh intelligent ideas. No politics as usual. Democratic voters can still support their party and the original intent of the founding fathers is preserved. NO ONE STATE will be recognized as the home of our seat of government. Giving DC state like priviledges would be unconstitutional. What more could you ask for unless you prefer divided politics and issues.

Very good

I'm most impressed that Chaffetz proposed a legitimate, constitutional solution - move the residential parts of DC back into Maryland. DC was set up to not have residential areas, but rather to be solely a city of government. There was to be some business housing for legislators and staff, but those people all lived somewhere else (in their home states!); the housing was for travelers in temporary residence, not full-time residents. (When DC was built, the US Congress didn't meet for much longer than the Utah legislature meets now.)

Good work on this. I'm still not convinced Chaffetz is going to amount to anything as a legislator, but he got this one right.

KVC

1) The Constitution does not give congressional representation to "federal districts". If they received a congressional seat, they would then push for a full Senate slate.
2) Chaffetz does not oppose them having representation. He believes the residential areas should be given back to Maryland, and they would have their representation through that state. Is that really such a hard concept for many of you to understand. It was done for the sections that are now part of Virginia.

I just think some of you hate conservatives so much that you don't think much at all.

Great

Good for you Jason! That is one of the many reasons I voted for you. We need some people who back the Constitution. We have enough out there desiring to ignore it.

Maybe DC having a vote is against the constitution, but is there a good reason for it? I believe Chaffetz wants that vote denied because it would likely not be a Republican vote. We all know 'publicans would change a great many things contained in the constitution. So thats a poor reason to deny DC a vote.

DC Resident

Good luck defining the "residential areas" of DC. We're all mixed in with the businesses and government buildings down here. I live within half a block of the Canadian Embassy, the National Gallery of Art, the Federal Trade Commission, and several courthouses. So do thousands of other people. Imagine trying to move the "residential areas" (i.e. the condos) of the Gateway center into West Valley City.

Great Job

Thanks for not trampling the Constitution under your feet, like so many other politicians from both parties are doing today.

The Constitution is relevant!!! Please continue to uphold it.

People please vote candidates into office who, like Jason, will uphold the Constitution no matter which party they represent.

I think Matheson has a good record on constiutional issues as well.
