As a Las Vegas resident, I disagree with the diss on billboards here. Yes, there are some racy ones, but no more so that any other major city in the United States. In fact, when I was in LA this summer, I saw many more graphic billboards than I see driving around Vegas. If you get away from the Strip, you see none of that stuff and it's a fabulous place to live.
pj | 1:32 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Oh fun.....Vegas.... too bad your coach jinxed your season with his "quest" theme. Too bad your coach took the players to the movie this summer instead of practicing, too bad "Hall is still throwing interceptions." Too bad Arizona will beat you badly, espcially since you were only able to beat the worst team in the PAC-10 with the help of the ref by one point, the Wildcats actually can play, your doomed. But have fun! How come nobody is trying to hire your coaches? Things that make you go hmmmmm........
RE: pj | 2:18 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Bitter about Gary Anderson leaving, and taking 2 other coaches as well? And do you remember 59-0? That's the same team that lost to USC today, but just by the score of 7-28. Yeah, BYU shutout UCLA and USC didn't, and scored 31 more points than USC did on them! And Utah is a 2-point conversion away from losing to Oregon State and Michigan!

Vegas Bowl is great. I hope we get Cal, but we will most likely get Arizona. At least we don't have to play Alabama, like Utah will, and Utah will get there butts handed to them by Alabama.

Go Cougars! Viva Las Vegas!

BYU is a medium fish in a little pond, the Utes are the undisputed Big fish in the little pond. No offense to people in UT and MWC, but your market is small compared to most. The Utes always seem to be the only national threat in the big sports and they thump plenty of really good teams, but the Coogs do well in their little pond games only, then stink it up when they really need to perform. The number of patsy wins they have is only impressive to the Zoobs, because you would be a zero to 1 win team every year in PAC 10, SEC, ACC, etc.
re: pj | 4:09 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
The only thing making me go hmmmm, is the sophomoric nature of your comment.

That being said, I'm excited for the chance to play for an 11-2 season, not bad at all.

Vegas plumber | 5:42 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008

Hey, I've got an idea. Rather than exposing the Cougars to the vices of our village, do what Gary Crowton did a few years ago when the Cougars played the lowly (tee hee) WAC Nevada-Reno. BYU's power house team stayed over night (Friday) at a Salt Lake hotel, and flew from SLC to Reno Saturday, the morning of the game. Check the score out. It was a brilliant strategy. (George W would have called it "strategery."!)

But its OK, it was just another WAC team besides Boise State beating a MWC team. Look at the bright side; its a bowl game, and against a lower echelon qualifying team from the Pac-10, AND being played in 2008. Why is all of this good news? The Cougars just might pull off a win in 2008 so we won't have to hear the monks chanting "Oh yeah, just wait until next year."

Maybe the Cougars can negotiate with Arizona to make it a day trip for both teams to just show up the morning of the game, kind of like the family playing Thanksgiving morning touch football against the neighborhood kids home from college.

Viva Las ougars!
PJ | 7:00 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
10-2, not bad. 18 and soon to be 16 in the BCS rankings. Not bad. Jinxed? There are around one hundred other schools that would like to be "jinxed" with a 10-2 record and a 16 BCS ranking. If we win the bowl we will have a .857 winning percentage over 3 years. Not bad. Are there better teams in the nation, yes, are there many, many more lesser teams? Duh. Are you a Ute troll? Probably. Congrats on your season. Well done. If we get Arizona, I think it will be a fun game.

Go cougars!
Vegas Baby | 7:02 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Living overseas I won't be able to travel to the Vegas Bowl this year, but look forward to watching it on my slingbox.

There will hopefully be 3 really BIG bowls for the MWC this year: 1. Utah v. Alabama 2. TCU v Boise St. and 3. BYU v. Arizona.

Utah's game is obviously the most important to improve the stature of the conference, but if the rest of the conference loses its bowls, the conference will lose a lot of the ground it has gained this year in terms of respect.

TCU needs to win to cement in the minds of the media that the MWC is the best non-BCS conferemce, which is their current assumption.

BYU needs to win to put a seal on a nice season for the MWC over the Pac-10 and to continue to pressure the conferences into putting the MWC champ into a better matchup than #4 Pac-10 (barring a team in the BCS).

BYU needs this win to start some momentum for next season.
Badlander | 7:03 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Don't forget, we also beat the second-worst team by a shut-out man...

I do wish Coach would emphasize making football #1 priority in the players lives. As the old quote goes "winning is the only thing".

re: pj | 7:11 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Thanks for the insight pj...*sarcasm*...

I'll be stopping at the Vegas Bowl this year for the first time. As an Arizona cougar, I'm excited to be able to stop in Vegas to see my team play before heading north for the holidays. Given a win and their current ranking, coupled with returning skill players, they'll be in the same position they were in after the 2007 Vegas Bowl, perhaps with some better perspective to guide them. Max Hall is too much of a competitor to not bounce back and have a great game. They will be out to prove something to themselves and to the nation that a couple bad losses doth not an 11-2 season make.

Did you notice that USC only beat UCLA 28-7. I guess that means we're better than USC because we beat them 59-0. (sarcasm...) Every game is different and I'm sure UW wouldn't be 0-12 had Locker not gotten injured and lost for the season.
This are just fine | 7:43 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
I, for one, think things are just fine in cougar town. It wasn't too long ago that BYU fans were thrilled with a 6&6 season and a bowl invitation. Going 10&2 for the third straight year is just fine with me. BYU remains competative and in the national discussion, but more importantly to me, Bronco and his teams have represented the School in an outstanding fashion with their conduct on and off the field. Next year should be another special season - the quest continues!

Starting in 2006 the las vegas bowl became home of the mountain west conference champs and the AD says
"we want to go ever year" This year the las vegas bowl didn't get the 1st or 2nd place team in the mwc. Congtatulations BYU you had a fine 10-2 record
and you reached your goal of returning to the lv bowl. Your reward once again is playing a middle of the pack, pac 10 school a 7-5 arizona
JA | 8:11 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
While a nice reward BYU should look for some variety in their bowl match ups. What player and fan wouldn't love a little variety now and then. San Diego would provide a nice change of pace not to mention a better opponent to play in Boise State. How great of a game would that be? BYU should work with the MWC to branch out; it would help the program grow and improve recruiting.

Vegas again? The MWC is sad. The Cougars get to go and play in a great location but in a meaningless bowl game, for a meaningless conference, for what? a $600,000 payout, WOW! I am so impressed by the strangle hold BYU via the MWC has on mediocrity.

I do however wish BYU the best against a PAC-10 nobody and I hope they win by 20.
uteowl | 8:34 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008

We can afford to put aside our dislike for the TDS until, well, hmmm basketball season is already going isn't it?

Oh well, anyway we can afford to cut the smack on their football team until next year.

To PJ: Man, you're childish. And, by the way, you don't have any idea if anyone is trying to hire BYU's coaches or not. Actually, I doubt you have EVER even had a football uniform on in your life.

As a Cougar, I say congratulations to Utah and go Utes. We are cheering for you in whatever bowl you get.

Also, I support BYU, Bronco and what he's trying to do to represent the School and the Church. He's trying to run a program that creates men of value and honor. Unfortunately, we will always have small, petty, immature people like PJ who remind us of how glad we are that we are Cougars.
fdg | 8:43 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
pj you must be a ute fan of the worst kind. Maby the reason that byu coaches are not being recruted is the fact that many of the schools would not want thier teams held to high standards because the byu coaches would demand it thus they could not get some of the players that live on the thin line of no discipline. The Y can and will beat the UofA. I like Coach M and how he works with his team. because they feel that the game is more than the score of a game. To bad others dont feel the same.
BlueBoy | 9:05 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Had BYU gone undefeated (but still the same team it now is), they'd be embarrassed in a BCS bowl like Hawaii was last year. Same might happen to Utah this year.

As well as the MWC did against BCS teams this year, none compare to the teams from the other conferences that will be playing BCS games. The MWC just got lucky in catching the Pac-10 and Michigan on a down year.

BYU will have its hands full trying to beat Arizona. It's not quite the same time that lost to the MWC earlier this year.

I'm expecting BYU to get its faults fixed and win the Las Vegas bowl, but not by much (presuming that's the bowl the go to).

Hopefully, TCU can have a good showing against Cal (basically a home game for them in Frisco), if that supposed matchup happens. If Air Force goes there, it'll be an interesting game.
To PJ from T Money | 9:14 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
PJ--I know you just wrote a message to get a rise out of us Cougar fans that are still a bit wounded from the BYU v. Utah game. Well, you did. BYU is going to beat up on Arizona. Why? Vegas is our home crowd and we destroy teams in front of our home crowd--UCLA 0, BYU 59. BYU has a lot to play for because we are trying to establish another run next year. I sincerely hope the Utes beat Alabama in their BCS bowl because they are going to be horrible next year. The Utes play both TCU and BYU on the road and they lose 8 starters from offense and have already lost their defensive coordinator. Enjoy these next few weeks PJ because starting with BYU beating down Utah in basketball in January and ending with BYU destroying Utah in football in November, 2009 is shaping up to be a great year. NOTE: There were 5 bowl teams from the MWC this year and BYU was one of them. We played TCU, Utah, Air Force and CSU ALL on the road in 2008. We'll have a "Welcome to Provo" party for them in 2009.
true blue | 9:15 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
No one is trying to hire our coaches b/c our coaches probably declined interviews. Don't worry next year Utah will finish 4th in the MWC.

Oh by the way did the Utes beat Idaho State. I didn't see the score.
WOW! | 9:25 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
I don't get into the whole BYU-Utah rivalry and want both teams to do well. PJ really has some bitter feelings and it is so sad to see someone that full of hurt, especially at 1:32 in the morning! Try to catch some of the Christmas spirit and spread happiness. Look for the good instead of reveling in the bad. You will be happier and live longer! A friend

re: re: pj | 10:51 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008
10-2 usually wouldn't be considered a bad season, but when you only play 3 teams with a winning record it is. Going 1-2 against any real competition.

As for beating UCLA by more than USC did, who cares? You only beat an 0-12 Washington team by 1 point.

BYU is 1-20 vs ranked teams since 1999.

The MWC is a joke. If the #1 option (if you don't qualify for the BCS) is to play a 5 or 6 loss Pac-10 team, we'll never get any respect.
The LV Bowl commissioner needs to put new blood into the game. The WAC would jump at the chance to send their champ to play the MWC champ, yet it will never get done.
Zoobs lose this one, their D is horrible.
re:Big Fish | 11:09 a.m. Dec. 7, 2008

Southwest Baptist University and Idaho State.

Thire in MWC football the past three years running prior to this year.

The only national threat you pose is to lose in the HC to SBU, and a 1-5 ISU?

Watching them play in the CBI because you couldn't get invited this year.

AK Cougar | 12:00 p.m. Dec. 7, 2008
The invite of BYU ahead of TCU for the Vegas Bowl shows that conference rankings is second to selling seats and advertising. California is staying home for their bowl game and should be going to Las Vegas. TCU should be in Las Vegas, but BYU will sell more seats. The whole bowl picture is about revenue first and then rankings.

BYU made the Holiday into a great bowl game with the opponent feeling lucky to attend and a big payout. Kudo's to them.

I hope the MWC will promote their own LV Bowl and it will grow to have great respect, but I do not see it coming. Selling seats and advetising for the current year is more valueble than building the bowl for the long term.

Go Cougars and make all fans proud when you run over the AZ opponent. Go Utes and please make the rest of the MWC proud in your BCS bowl.

The title of the story:

"BYU football: Las Vegas (Bowl) is Cougars's home away from home"

I really must of missed how this article has anything to do with the Utes.

I think I'll go over on the Utah Women's Volleyball Story and talk BYU Basketball.

How is it that you poor Utah fans, and your Big 45,000 seat stadium feel so insecure that you have to get right on the boards and post?

I'm sure Alabams is not running to post on Michigan articles.

See, you Utah fans got so pumped up to barely beat a team that has had a storied program in their much larger stadium (The Big House), even though just about everyone else has beat them there, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A STORIED PROGRAM...

Where has the Ute football team been the past few years? That's because you're not storied. Your BIG BROTHERS to the south are "storied". All of those National Awards, National Championships, representing the WAC all those years...

That is why Ute Fans are so insecure.

Next year begins the same old lame Ute Quest for Mediocrity.

In the meantime, I can really see a 70+ embarassment coming Utah's way.

At least Ute-Basketball-looks-mediocrely-strong.

Just when the conversaton was getting good, somebody had to start taking about basketball.

The Sagarin Ratings have Utah #33 after the loss to ISU and BYU @ #26 after beating USU. Utah had been #15 and BYU #62.
Its early and Utah has a new coach.

Is ISU any good? Who cares!!

I thought the blog was about football.

Most people, if they feel uncomfortable discussing a subject, will normally try to CHANGE THE SUBJECT!!

Basketball....................please...not just yet..atleast wait till after the EOY.

Just pray that the Cubers don't lay an egg in the desert (VB)!! Arizona isn't that bad......and the Cubers aren't that good.............(defensiviely).

Y would the Cubers want Utah to get blown out (SB), and Y would the Utes want the Cubers to lose to AZ (VB).

It dosen't make sense to me.

I love the rivalry, and I want my wins and losses to have meaning, not mediocrity.

GO UTES......GO Cubers.....GO TCU....GO AFA...GO CSU.

Lets all: "pray for those who despitefully use us."

LIttle Brothers | 12:39 p.m. Dec. 7, 2008
Utah is having a great season in football, but their fans seem incapable of simply enjoying their success sans BYU comparisions.

Even on an article about BYU and the Las Vegas Bowl, our little brothers up on the hill feel compelled to get involved in the discussion; it's too bad the Utes will never be able to attain self-actualization without having to use BYU as their basis for comparison.

It's funny how Utah fans don't think anything that occured waaaay back in 1984 is relevant, yet they are constantly refering to the "overall record" between BYU and Utah, in which the vast majority of Utah's wins came between 1922 and 1962.

Then, of course, there's Utah's NCAA basketball title that they like to bring up, which occurred in 1944 when the NCAA tournament only included 8 teams and wasn't even the most prestigious tournament of the time; that would have been the NIT tournament.
MiP | 1:27 p.m. Dec. 7, 2008
BYU should be careful not to underestimate Arizona. I'm sure many of their fans have already chalked this victory up. Perhaps they forgot to respect their opponent. Isn't that what the supposed Haka dance is for? Last year, a 10-2 BYU went up against a 6-6 UCLA team and squeeked out a win (to even the season series).

My soapbox:
Why is it that some BYU fans get all upset by Ute fans on here? Do they not know the DN is Utah based? And that the article touched upon the MWC (you know, the conference the Utes are in) ties with the Vegas Bowl?

I guess the only reason these fans are so upset and predicting Alabama to beat Utah by 70+ is, well, envy.

Interestingly, if these same BYU fans were to look up at the comments based on this article, strangely you'd likely find as many of THEM talking about the Ute achievements as vice versa (ie. "little brothers @1239) as Ute fans talking about BYU.

Also re: little brothers:

I find it silly when someone of your obvious elite status must stoop to call others your little brother.

How cute.

Thanks Insecure Utah Men Sir | 3:10 p.m. Dec. 7, 2008
and Little Brothers for the reminder of the pecking order here in the state of Utah. The University of Utah will no doubt have it's occasional moments of glory (Congrats 2008 Utes!), but will forever remain the ugly red-headed stepchild in Utah.

Amazing that Utah's fair-weather fans seem to believe that two (ever) outstanding seasons make up for decades of mediocrity and futilty. How quickly they forget that the hated rival has won 32 games over the past three seasons. Have no doubt that the days of 6-6 football seasons and half-filled RES will soon return to to the Hill.

Utah will always be only the second best football team in the state. And it seems that it may soon become the same story in basketball. Imagine losing to ISU and Southwest Baptist. Can anyone say CBI, here we come?

Utah will be horrible next year??? Who do they lose? BJ, with as good or better QB's waiting in the wing. Casteel will be replaced by David Reed who is just as good, Godfrey will be replaced by Aiona Key who is better and probably the best athlete on the team right now. They lose Mack, who was 2nd to Asiata anyways, along with Redshirt Sashaun Shakerin, remember that recruit you lost to us??? On the D side they lose NOBODY that will hurt and those they lose will be replaced by better talent. As for Gary Anderson, tell me again who he learned under as the D-line coach??? Oh yeah, thats right, Woach Whitt. Its Whitts system, not Andersons so anyone who has been there can keep it going. Nice try, have fun in Vegas

And we can only pray that you have fun in N'Orleans as well.

Although we will all (yes even us BYU fans) be pulling for you to win and hope that you do, we will be proud of you even if you lose. Just, please keep it respectable...say 28-24 or thereabouts Just no Hawaii style blowouts.

Great year MWC!

Oh thank you for your post it's so good to hear that the yoots will have no legitimate excuses next season when we pound you into the turf at LES. And when I say no legitimate excuses that doesn't mean the whiny yoot fans won't be on these boards posting excuses, it simply means their excuses won't be legitimate.

The only thing I ask is that you PLEASE have your team use the men's room often before and during the game so they don't ruin our new turf by leaving wet spots all over it like the last time we beat them at LES. We don't care if they do that to their own field though.
