  • RE RPI explained
    Dec. 4, 2008 9:39 p.m.

Thank you..Now please explain the coorelation of a weak schedule and the NCAA Tournament. Since the second round of said tournament seems to elude you every single time you run through your weak schedule and make it to the Dance.

But if you need more help, ask Bronco about a weak schedule and false National Respect. The song "Free Fallin'" comes to mind.

Please BYU fans, don't try and explain RPI, or National Respect to the Utes. We have plenty of each.

  • RPI explained
    Dec. 4, 2008 8:02 p.m.

BYU has a much lower RPI than yewtah because we have yewtah on our schedule and yewtah's RPI is really high because they have to play BYU. See how that works? Easy, huh yewt fans? You're welcome.

To all u "sagarin" geniuses posting today, it's still way too early in the season for Sagarin ratings to have any meaning. Just thought someone should tell u...

The only ranking that matters for the selection committee is RPI.

All I know is the last time that Utah had a coach who preached defensive intesity, demanded effort and held them accountable this program dominated the MWC and faired well in the Dance. I am seeing those similarities, just look at Neville, he is in shape, taking ownership and working his tail off. Hope it works out the way it did when the Fat guy wore the sweater. GO UTES

  • Sagarin Baskettball rating
    Dec. 4, 2008 3:40 p.m.

    Utah # 14 (SOS 87)
    BYU #38 (SOS 336)

Utah will play #13 Ok and #3 Gongaza --a win against one of these 2 (or 2 wins) will be GREAT.

  • Common Sense
    Dec. 4, 2008 2:56 p.m.

As much as I love the UTES, the loss to SW Baptist will hurt them a lot come selection time if they're on the bubble, (non MWC tournament champions), and they are competing with other schools looking for bids. That loss to a division II school is going to keep them out of the big dance.

They haven't even started their conference schedule, and they will play UNLV and BYU twice, so talking about March and wins/losses is a little premature.

  • Pomeroy Ratings
    Dec. 4, 2008 2:50 p.m.

The Pomeroy ratings, which claim to be better than the RPI, has Utah at 5 and BYU at 22

Who dies he embarrass? The players love his attitude as a coach, and as a longtime fan I love it too. He makes the kids work, and his idea of having kepkay and green come off the becnh is a great one. It gives them alot of firepower with the second unit. If you don't like to hear him get the fans involved, then leave before he does it. They've won five in a row for the first time in w while so something must be working. Plus, Gonzaga, Oklahoma and Cal are still waiting. If they could get one win, great, two would be awesome and all three would shut alot of people up. I love Jimmy aqnd I love the Utes. It was a fun game to watch.

Kewg fans will not forget the SW Baptist loss all year! I loved the comment: "Only a delusional Utah fan would believe that the tournament selection committee won't consider the loss to SW Baptist come tournament selection time."

Let me give you a little lesson on the NCAA Basketball Tournament since you and your team haven't had much experience with it. The SW Baptist loss was the first game of the season. The selection committee reviews the entire schedule, RPI and end of season momentum. The first game of 30 has very little impact, period. Now if the Utes lost a game to a DII team at the end of the season, it would have a significant impact.

I know you need something to hope for since you are living in the very large shadow of Utah Utes basketball. We have a rich tradition and have had a great deal of success in the NCAA Tournament. Please look for something else, the SW Baptist loss will not hurt our chances come tournament time.

Maybe you should focus on ways to get out of the 1st round? Was 1993 your last tournament win?

    Just checked today's RPI rankings: Utah - #6 in country. Utah State - #118. BYU - #126.

  • sorry
    Dec. 4, 2008 1:15 p.m.

sorry that Jim Boylen cant have the missionary comb over of dave rose, also i am sorry that the Utes have some serious energy at there games.

Question, Do the Quest for Perfection T-Shirts carry over to the basketball team?

That way people will feel like they are getting their moneys worth

  • U can count on it
    Dec. 4, 2008 12:37 p.m.

Jim "The Screamin' Demon" Boylen does it again! No, not the win - the microphone at the end of the game! It's hilarious to watch him woofing into the mic like he's in Wrestle-mania! What a joke! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    Dec. 4, 2008 12:31 p.m.

Oregon has a very weak team and will most likely finish 8th or 9th in the PAC-10. It's good to get a win over a PAC-10 team but this was not a good measuring stick.

  • Hey Bigutefan
    Dec. 4, 2008 11:18 a.m.

I thought Boylen ruined kepkays game...shows what you know. Now the only thing you have left to complain about is him grabbing the mic. You dont know basketball so shut your yap.

  • Shaun Green pivotal
    Dec. 4, 2008 11:08 a.m.

It's good to hear that Shaun Green is scoring some decent numbers. The guy can shoot and I thought last year that he didn't shoot enough. He needs to step up and lead the team because he can. Nice win.

  • Ute Fans
    Dec. 4, 2008 10:28 a.m.

First, I was at the game, and second, I was rooting for the Ducks as a graduate of both the U and the U of O.

Oregon is a good win any year. Its a PAC 10 school that regardless, has a good ring to it "we beat Oregon.

That said, the win will look less and less impressive as the year progresses and as Tajuan Porter begins to single handedly lead the Ducks to at best maybe double digits in wins. Combine that with Oregon's best player leaving midway through the second half (I will concede it was over then anyways) and the win was a given for the U.

The Utes did look impressive. The great thing about the schedule this year, is that Utah will know how good they really are well before conference. It would really surprise me if this UTE team didn't make the NCAA tournament.

  • RE: Give Jimmy The Mic
    Dec. 4, 2008 9:49 a.m.

I totally agree, The Ute fans who dont want him to talk are probably the same guys who would just love to have Ray G. back. I for one Love to see jim scream after the games, you take the passion out of the game and you will have the same team from 3 and 4 years ago, remember how soft Luke N was playing, now he will probably be a draft pick. Jim is the Real deal and he is getting this program back on track. Love the schedule he put together, you have to play the best to be the best, maybe BYU will figure that out eventually, or maybe they will keep losing when it counts.
    GO UTES, GO JIM B
to all the ute fans calling for him to stop screaming after games, GO TO THE MARRIOTT CENTER!!!

game by game i am starting to have some hope. keep it up utes

  • Give Jimmy the mic
    Dec. 4, 2008 9:10 a.m.

to all the people who tell Jim B. to not talk on the mic: SHUT UP! It is awesome to have some passion and energy in the program again and Jimmy should speak his mind whenever he feels like it. The haters out there are most likely TDS fans who hate when Utah has a good coach and if not then go away band wagon ute fan

  • Is there a difference
    Dec. 4, 2008 8:40 a.m.

between BYU fans downplaying Utah wins and Utah fans downplaying Utah losses?

At this point, nobody knows for sure which wins will indeed be quality wins, but, one thing is for sure, there's no excusing a loss to a DII team, ever, even if that DII team goes on to win the DII NCAA championship.

If Utah goes on to have a stellar season, 1st or 2nd in the MWC, 25 wins, the loss to SW Baptist will be overlooked. However, if Utah ends the season as a bubble team, that loss could spell doom to Utah's NCAA tournament chances.

    Dec. 4, 2008 8:16 a.m.

A nice win. just continuing MWC dominance over the Pac-10. This team is certainly playing with more confidence than last year, I think they are more comfortable in the system. It was nice to see a win where the Utes didn't have to slow it down and try to pound them. Fast paced game with some great shooting.

    Go Utes.

  • No worries
    Dec. 4, 2008 8:13 a.m.

Don't worry fellow Utes......only a few months ago Y fans were flocking to our football articles, downplaying our wins. "Michigan is a terrible team"....sound familiar? And they kept doing it all season until three weeks ago Utah gave them the business, putting an end to that argument.

So BYU fans downplaying Utah's wins is only to be expected. It's the way they show fear.

  • re: Ummmmmmmm......
    Dec. 4, 2008 7:58 a.m.

"SW Baptist games doesn't count for a loss come tournament time."

DON'T COUNT ON THE LOSS BEING IGNORED!

Only a delusional Utah fan would believe that the tournament selection committee won't consider the loss to SW Baptist come tournament selection time.

The reason Division II games aren't included in RPI is because DII teams are so far off the charts. Wins don't count against DII teams because they're seen as gimme's. Losses to DII teams, however, will certainly be looked on with a disdainful eye by the selection committee.

This Oregon team will be really good in the future. They have mostly freshman, a few sophs, and 3 jr's. They have lost games you cant explain to Oakland, just like Utah losing to SW Baptist. But Oregon has already faced Texas and a dominant UNC team. Look for the Ducks to make a run next year!

  • Who was #3?
    Dec. 4, 2008 7:30 a.m.

That Oregon gaurd was an amazing shooter. If it wasn't for that guy, the Ducks would have lost by 35.

Wow it's amazing to see the Cougars flock to Utah articles to downplay wins by the Utes. It just brings a smile to my face actually, because it proves, once again, that Zoobies are just as low as they claim Utah fans are. Don't be jealous just because we actually schedule good teams. Have fun with your cupcake schedule, just like football. You'll be exposed in due time, and until then we'll work our way back to where we belong.. on top! Oh, and don't even try to bring up the argument that quality teams refuse to play you, because everyone knows that's just a load of BS.

Hope the first two posters weren't ute fans. I feel sorry for you if you are. I'm a BYU fan, but this solid win over a PAC10 team and a W over a good SEC team is impressive, more impressive than any BYU win so far.

  • Ummmmmmmm......
    Dec. 4, 2008 2:08 a.m.

Looks like a certain jealous kewgs fan needs to get some sleep. He/she should know that the SW Baptist games doesn't count for a loss come tournament time.

Oregon is a good program and this was an excellent win for the Utes.

You may want to follow the RPI ratings when speaking about tournament selections. If the Utes get 20 wins with their schedule, they will be in the tournament come March.

    Go Utes!

Great game UTES! Too bad the evening had to end with Bullwinkle grabbing the microphone and yelling into it, yet again embarassing folks. Someone, anybody, please tell Boylen to not speak into a microphone. He he can't resist then at least talk like an adult, with a normal voice tone. He screams like an idiot, sounds like the Castle of Greyskull. GO UTES!

  • Nice Win
    Dec. 4, 2008 12:37 a.m.

The win against oregon tonight was not much of a win this was a poor oregon team. Oregon lost to oakland U at home and that same oakland team lost to suu by about 20 points on tuesday night. Dont forget about SW baptist with that loss the only way utah is going to the NCAA tourn is by winning the conference.

  • No Good"
    Dec. 4, 2008 12:21 a.m.

Oregon was t a good win for the utes. They lost earlier in the year to oakley university at home, and that same oakley team lost to suu tue night by right around 20 points. Don't forget utah lost to SW baptist.
