All those who are so adamant about down-crying this controversy are exactly what this resolution is about (notice; it is a resolution, not a law). It's the apathy of this nation that will eventually make it weaker.

I believe that there should not be anyone fearful of offending someone because that person says 'Merry Christmas'! Talk about ridiculous! This is just plain silly. The unfortunate thing is that these people exist. By saying this, no one is trying to convert you to any type of religion. It's a simple gesture of seasonal cheer and should be taken as such. We have plenty of things to be offended about (lyrics in popular songs, movies, media in general, workplace talk, etc.). This shouldn't be one of them...

I applaud Sen. Buttars in his stance towards letting everyone know where he stands. We should all do the same!

The United States of America was founded on Jewdeo/Christian values! Why is this such a hard thing to accept?! I am grateful for this heritage and my christian upbringing. This time of year is as much a celebration of Christ's birth as it is our Nations heritage. No one should be offended by that!

It is true that a majority of the founding fathers considered themselves Christian, but this should not matter to Utah because Mormonism is not considered a Christian religion. Evangelicals consider Mormonism a cult. Catholics will not recognize a Mormon baptism for a Mormon to Catholic convert. Presbyterians, Methodists, and Lutherans all reject the Mormon/Christian claim because Mormons reject the trinity.

Maybe I am reading too much into this story. The issue should be that at this time of the year, we, Christians celebrate Christmas....by behaving as Christians, such as being kind to one another, whether they believe as we do or not. Me thinks Mr. Butters is more concerned with the merchants getting people into their store.

Lets hear it for more make nice and less mauling at the mall.

Tuesday night Keith Oberman selected Mr. Buttars as "The worst person in the world."

I'd say the clown (Buttars) isn't that bad but doesn't he have anything more important on his agenda?

Teaching Creationism to 6 year old? Increasing "Sin" taxes?

But why am I bothering myself with this, the man doesn't deserve this much attention!
RE: grundle | 1:17 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
The media doesn't have a bulls eye set on Buttars.

It's the STUPIDITY of Senator Buttars that attracts all of his media attention.

The religious right in this country is still paranoid, fear-based, dumb, and struggling to hold itself together with non-issues like this. I find it extremely amusing shaundenfraude and hope it continues, since the last election demonstrated that it is obviously not working with most of the country. Bill O'Reilly and Rush can claim responsibility for this state of affairs. Let's keep them in business, since they are clearly the leader of a lost cause....Please, PLEASE run Sarah Palin in 2012!

Why not elect people who cares about school, public transport, economy and jobs!!!

Senator Buttars, I think is time to go home and play with your grankids and teach about Christmas and let another politician do THE JOB.

WE HAVE A LOT TO DO NOW THAN FIGHT ABOUT SAYING MERRY CHRISTMAS OR HAPPY HOLIDAYS. I LIKE BOTH, I BELIEVE IN CHRIST AND I REMEMBER HIM ALL YEAR, NOT FOR DECEMBER ONLY!!!

Honoring the god Saturn was the REAL "reason for the season", until those plagiarizing Christians came along and appropriated the date, without so much as a howdy-doo or a thank ye.

So, a merry "Io, Saturnalia" to all, and to all a good night.

I wish that Butter's from South Park would replace this Chris Buttars I am certain he would do a better job. This clown needs to go on mission to Africa were he can actually help someone instead of making Utah look like the "Clampets".

I heard the legislature is planning to do a live nativity scene this year. The parts for Mary, Joseph, the wise Men and the Shepherds are all up for grabs. The part of Donkey has already been taken by Chris Butters.

I think you should read and learn more about other religions, please do it, what you have said is just IGNORANCE and doesnt make any sense with the article.
I was catholic and there is a lot of things that can be questioned about the Catholic Church, BUT we are not here discusing about doctrine and churches!
Seen the light | 1:59 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Growing up, I was taught that the gifts and sugar and plastic junk part of Christmas was a fun but self-indulgent party. The religious aspect was what we celebrated with reverence at church. Thank goodness Buttars was there to straighten me out and inform me that crass consumerism and mass consumption is what it is truly all about. The true alter of the Lord is the cash register and the true meaning of Christmas involves maxing out your credit card to buy plastic trash from China.Holy, holy, holy, cha-ching, praise the Lord and if you try to grab the last tickle me Elmo, I will trample you in the name of Jesus. Hallelulia!

Happy Festivus!
Two points: | 2:22 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
1) "Happy Holidays" doesn't exclude Christmas. It simply acknowledges that within just over 30 days we have Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, Hannukah, Eid, and even Kwanzaa as well as Christmas. People say "Happy Holidays" as shorthand to listing a paragraph of various celebrations.

2) I thought Chris Buttars, being a Republican, would believe in the Free Market. Believe me, if stores thought saying "Merry Christmas" would result in higher sales, they'd be saying it to you every six feet. If Wal-Mart's research - and they spend thousands of dollars a year trying to figure this stuff out - told them their sales would increase if they had singing cashiers, we'd have to listen to semi-employed sophomores warbling "Deck the Halls" offkey. The Free Market has spoken on what works best for retailers - so I guess Chris is a socialist at heart.

Gee Badger...do you know the contents of the NON_BINDING resolution...Oh...never mind there isn't any.

Hmmm. you seem very concerned that the media report on everything Buttars does...Are you as concerned about what your senator has opened up? I think you ought to start there and give him/her a call.

The media has focused on Buttars to a ridiculous degree. When opening a file on a non-binding resolution with no text makes the front page of the trib, it becomes silly. I guess it sells papers though.

The United States of America is not, nor has it ever been, a "Christian" nation. America is NOT leading the world and prospering because it is a "Christian" nation, and it will not fall and be destroyed if it abandons "Christian" principles, words, and holidays. Christianity is NOT what makes America great, and therefore, a loss of Christianity in public discourse will NOT make America crumble.

Buttars, along with a bunch of other fanatic Christians and Mormons, are taking a page out of the operating manula of the Taliban and Islamic fundamentalist wackos. We need to fight such extremism everywhere it manifests itself! The war on Terrorism must include a war on ALL religious extremism such as the idiocy of Chris Buttars!

Merry Christmas! | 5:51 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
A lot of people think this is a joke but I think that it's a viable issue. Many people said they don't want to impose their beliefs on anyone. By not allowing people to express their holiday wishes as Merry Christmas (as this retail store did) is imposing beliefs upon someone.
If it takes legislation to ensure that people retain their freedom of speech then I'm for it.

As a Catholic I am upset by your comment about how the Catholic chuch won't accept LDS baptism. I must remind you that if I a baptsized Catholic were to convert to the LDS church I would need to be baptized by the LDS church.

Stop focusing on our differences. Evangelicals, Catholics and LDS all say Merry Christmas.
I'm sorry | 8:50 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Do you not know what he means? He's not asking you to stop celebrating (or not celebrating) other holidays in the holiday season. He's not even asking people to stop saying "Happy Holidays." He's just trying to get the point across that it should ALWAYS be ok to say "Merry Christmas." Who wants to worry about the PC of saying the name of the actual holiday they're trying to celebrate? It's a Christian holiday celebrating Christ's birth. So...

Merry Christmas!
Confused | 9:23 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
If this is a "Christian nation" populated by Christians, then how can Christians be in danger of losing their grip on the country? The only way this even makes sense is if Christians are a minority - in which case Merry Christmas would be applicable to fewer people and Happy Holidays would be the best greeting.

So, are Christians a minority trying to force their will on the majority? Or are they a majority who just need a good excuse to whine?

Joe,

You are right. Christmas is not about shopping; it's about giving. If we boycut those stores that refuse to say Merry Christmas, you will see how fast they will change their tune. The percentage they don't want to offend will not be enought to bring in the mighty dollars that convert into PROFIT.
Hypocrisy | 9:37 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
The Christian-Right is calling for a boycott of stores that don't promote/say "Merry Christmas" and to vote with their shopping dollars.

These are the same people that berated the Anti-Prop 8 folks for suggesting a boycott of companies that supported/donated towards the passage of Prop 8.

The sad thing is that you don't even see the hypocrisy is your actions. Pretty sad.
Bah Humbug | 10:58 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I said "Bah Humbug" to Buttars at the election booth this fall -- disappointed my fellow West Jordan residents didn't agree and voted this guy back in.

Happy Holidays -- Merry Christmas -- Good tidings of great joy -- Chag Sameach -- Kujichagulia -- Let's all play nice and enjoy the cultural beauty that diversity brings.
Larry Linn | 11:58 a.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Sen. Chris Buttars, I was raised in the Mennonite Church, and both of my parents were protestants. On the street where I was raised, my neighbors were Mormons, Roman Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Armenian Orthodox, Mennonites, Buddhists, Shintos as well as atheists and agnostics. All were American citizens. My next door neighbors were Japanese. The father was a Buddist and a Shinto. Both of his two sons were born in the Manzanar Japanese Concentration Camp. Both served in the U.S. Army when they became young men.
I live in downtown Los Angeles, and within a mile of my office, there are six Buddhist Temples, a Jewish Temple, the Catholic Cathedral, a Zen Temple, several Protestant Churches, as well as an Islamic Temple and a LDS facility near USC. All are American! Mr. Dobson and Senator Buttars, you did not serve in the U.S. Military, and may not understand, but when I served in Vietnam, freedom of religion, and the other freedoms in the Bill of Rights was what I was fighting for. I was not fighting to institute a religious theocracy.

First Amendment - Religion and Expression:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Global Conflict | 1:35 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
"We have a war on Christmas," Buttars said.

Perhaps General Chris "Patton" Buttars should ask Santa for a combat helmet and camouflage outfit so he can better participate in this battle?
evolutionfish | 2:25 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
If being told "Happy Holidays" ruins Christmas for you, you really need to rethink your religious convictions. I don't celebrate it but I get upset when I am greeted with a "Merry Christmas" I just smile and say "the same to you". I don't think it's important to the spirit of Christmas or any other holiday to be reminded that it's the (insert holiday here) season.
Bruce | 2:37 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
K, you would not be allowed to use your Catholic Baptism to become Mormon. Mormons require a full immersion baptism and yours as a Catholic was not. Even if you had a full immersion baptism, such as the Baptists, it would not be allowed because Mormons teach that the person performing the ceremony must have the proper Aaronic Priesthood authority, which according to Mormon doctrine, a Baptist preacher would not

This nut job really needs to go. "The pride of West Jordan" apparently has such little objectivity on any thing. The fact that he is up on the hill making laws for the rest of us, has got to be the most terrifying thing this season, its like the NIGHTMARE Before Christmas in Utah..
Sick and Tired | 4:31 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I am saddened everytime Chris Buttars opens his mouth. His extremist views make national headlines and our state is viewed as a group backward-thinking fanatics. I wish he would just resign.
The Heart Knows | 4:59 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I can't believe the hatred, vitriol, bitterness, and poison that comes out liberals mouths and hearts evertime there is a story about Buttars.

Truly who is more sick? the Liberals or just one man.

He never said anything racist, he words were twisted so liberal could attack him, For all you stupid stupid liberals: HE WAS TALKING ABOUT A BILL.

Maybe you should all look at you own hearts.

Evolution is the biggest bunch of foolish nonsense ever concocted and foisted upon us.

Christmas IS CHRISTMAS.

And I can't believe the DN thinks this is a good thing to contunue to allow this.

May I remind you | 7:39 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Of an old song "Happy Holidays to you". I do believe that this has been blown out of proportion. There has been a little withdrawing of "Merry Christmas" but many old songs and many old decorations that I have and know of talk about "happy holidays". Goodness, the stores start their "holidays" before Thanksgiving (maybe even around Halloween) now and they shouldn't say "Merry Christmas" at that time! I think this man is looking for something to be mad about since so many people have been upset with him.
re: May I remind you | 9:29 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
I remember a lot of the cards we received this time of year touting "Season's Greetings!" when I was a kid in the early 60s. I remember seeing *many* with this sentiment. I was the one who had the privilege of hanging them over the yarn swagging the back of our front door.
Treaty of Tripoli, Look it up | 10:43 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008
Treaty of Tripoli

Passed by Congress and signed into law by the second President (and Founding Father) John Adams on June 10, 1797.

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; ... "
________

We are a nation of many religions (protected by the 1st amendment of the Constitution) and Republican Chris Butters should follow his parties principals of getting the "government out of the way" and let companies operate how they see fit. If you don't like it, shop elsewhere! This is a waste of all our tax dollars.

*** HAPPY HOLIDAYS ****
(all of them)
This is sad... | 1:25 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
To Treaty of Tripoli, Look it up - Everyone agrees that the nation was not founded on the 'Christian Religion' or any other religion. However, to say that it wasn't founded on Judeo/Christian values and principles is simply denial.

To evolutionfish - What's so offensive with "Merry Christmas"? Why does this upset you? I've read vitriol comment after vitriol comment about how ridiculous this resolution is, but you have totally justified Senator Butters here. There really are people who are offended or who become upset when someone greets them with "Merry Christmas". You know this has nothing to do with converting you or having you acknowledge in any way that you must believe the way they do, right? All it is, is a simple seasonal, holiday gesture of a hope of peace on earth and good will toward men. If this is genuinely expressed, how could this possibly offend anyone??

There you have it, folks. Someone is officially offended by "Merry Christmas". Let the war rage on...
David Atchison | 6:26 a.m. Dec. 5, 2008
I do not think the ban would be necessary. I also do not think it is righr, for a retailer to tell their employees they cannot use the words
Merry Christmas if they want. What happened to Free Speech? I would never
work for someone who told me I could not
use whatever I wanted. I do believe that
No one has the right, just because they
don't like my Christian views, pushing
their view on me, as I wont push mine on
them. They dont like the words Merry
Christmas, then shop somewhere else. No one is holding a gun to their heads.
