it suprised me to see Jordan ranked at number 18. They are a very good team with a lot of returning players. They were sloppy against Park City but will pick it up as the season goes on. Watch out for Jordan. they have a tough pre-season schedule and could make some noise with wins over Davis, Bingham, PG and West Jordan. I'm looking forward to watching them this season.
East is not in the rankings??? | 5:07 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
oh yeah, East has lets its program hit rock bottom.
They are worlds away from being competitive.
They have won less then 10 games in the past 4 years.
They would not be in the top half of the 2A Classification.
EAST HIGH! | 7:09 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!

top25?? | 7:11 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
why is this article called the top 25 when I see only 20 teams?
olympus lost in the first round at state last year and their jv team wasn't great either. why are they ranked so high-?? lots of better 4a schools and where is Viewmont- who went deep into state finals last year?
Davis was a VERY close second to lone peak last year but they are behind schools with much worse records last year.
I think actual records this year will be big surprises to the utah county biased voters!!
Anonymous | 7:40 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
ok springville took lone peak to OT and they aren't even ranked above teams that haven't played a game, that makes alot of sense
Dixie | 7:45 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Dixie should be in the top 10!
Brain-e-ack | 7:52 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I guess you can pick who ever you want when all teams are 0-0.
Pine View? | 8:00 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Are you serious? Pine View got all of it's younger groups pillaged by Desert Hills and their senior class, what hasn't already been depleted by SEASON LONG injuries, is mediocre at best. You can't even base this ranking on good coaching since their old head coach, amazing as he is, jumped ship for Desert Hills and their new coach is an unknown entity. Pine View will be lucky to win 2 games in Region 9 including the games against the much improved 3A side of the region. This ranking has to be based on their schools name, not on fact.
top25a?? | 8:04 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
how can a top 25 ranking with only 20 teams mentioned make any sense--don't worry--as usual the real rankings will be figured out come state tournament time.looks like they only looked at southern salt county and further south with an silly ranking for Olympus who lost in the first round at state last year.
these are the same writers who last year ranked sky view in the top ten based on having one tall dude who never lived up to his potential so what do you expect?? these dudes probably picked hillary c to win the election in pre season polls.!
ok | 8:25 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Let the season begin............we all agree it will be determined in the end...keep reading..ha
LP | 8:32 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I don't think the Tyler Haws show can keep LP un-beaten this season.
Re: LP | 8:57 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Really :-) It is a little different when you are not playing with 3 other D1 players over 6'7. They will not even come close to being undefeated!
dixie | 9:04 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
dixie will dominate region 9 this year are you sure you didnt rank pine views football team in the basketball rankings
No Springville?? | 9:09 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
We all but punked Tyler Haws and Lone Peak and we get no run at all? Coach Kitchen and the boys get no respect, but when they win State they'll get some love. It's a travesty that Dan Foster hasn't been offered a D-1 full ride scholarship yet. He's the most versatile big in Utah county. And Mortensen will be playing in the NBA some day. Yeah, he's skinny, but so is CJ Miles and Ronnie Price. And he's been playing varsity ball since 9th grade. That should tell you something.

Go Devils! Win State!
Haws | 9:11 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Regardless if he can keep the team undefeated he is still the class of the state as far as boys basketball players go. He is also a class act off the court so even though we have to play against them I wish him all the luck in the world. Too bad he didn't choose to play at Utah State though, at least he would've had a chance to win in the NCAA tournament.
Haws | 9:24 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Yeah Haws is the man and will take his team as far as he can. I'm sure they have other player who will step up. It takes 5 you know.
RE: Haws | 9:26 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Really? A chance to win the NCAA tournament with Utah St.? you've got to be joking. I know BYU hasn't won a tourney game in years but I still think their chances to win it all are better than Utah St.
Utah County | 9:29 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
5A and 4A champions will come from Utah County again.

Can you say 3-Peat?

If there is an upset in 4A it will come from Springvile this year.

5A, LP is king until someone takes it away. I watched the LP-Springvile game. Shooting 3 pointers in a big arena can present problems. They only made 2 (out of 15?). Look for that to greatly improve. Underestimate the other LP players at your own peril.

No 3-peat | 9:40 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
LP is not repeating. They downgraded at every position and by virtue of size, Haws will be playing out of position all year which will effect his ability to take games over consistently like he had to last week.
So save the 3-peat t-shirts for another year and another team.
RE: RE: Haws | 9:43 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I think the comment was that he would have a better chance to win a tournament game, not the entire tournament. USU will roll this Saturday!
Dixie | 10:37 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Anybody see dixie play last week? IMPRESSIVE
region 9 fam | 10:46 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Dixie did have a nice win, but can we say AGAINST ENTERPRISE- let's see how they compete against schools their own size- the if they do well we can say IMPRESSIVE!
TBT | 10:54 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Riverton is going to be tougher this year, with a strong returning lineup. Scott Friel had 25 last week, and Ryan Thomas looked strong down low with 15. Their game looks a lot more polished, and hopefully they will keep it up! Go wolves!
Springville | 11:02 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Watch the devils.
G Rider | 11:34 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
You better watch them Granger Lancers this year.
If your looking for an exciting team to follow this will be it!
Springville is due.. | 11:58 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
It's only taken 6 years for the Devils to make it to the state tournament. And even though they only got one game there last year, they have broken the glass ceiling that has kept them down. Hopefully, they will have many more appearances.

Theirs is a great story.. right up there with Remember the Titans, Rudy, and Hoosiers. Where else could a storage container rental guy with no real basketball experience carry a team on his shoulders and make it to the state tourney?? Only in Springville. Inspirational. I look forward to Springville surprising lots of teams this year.
reggie | 12:08 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Taylorsville has not done well the last two years but Jordan Edginton returns as a 3 year starter and will take them a long ways. Go Tville!
Reggie | 12:16 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Taylorsville has not been very good the last two years but three starter Jordan Edginton will carry them a long ways. He's a 6'5" guy that can shoot the lights out and also take you inside. Go Tville!
payson?? | 12:45 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
payson smoked most of these teams during the summer we will just wait till a few games in and check the list........
Haws | 1:03 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
of course it takes five players to win at basketball, no one player is good enough to win anything without teammates, but with Haws on the court he not only is great himself, he's a good teammate.

And to clarify to the bitter "Questers" out there who are still overly sensitive about everything, Utah State always has a better chance of winning in the tournament than BYU does, they play in it more often and when they do they actually do win a game once in awhile.
DHS DARTS | 1:15 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Davis is coming back for a solid season!
weighing in | 1:17 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I saw Friel in AAU ball, he has kind of an unorthodox shot, but man that kid can fill it up. As for Dixie. I'll be the first to say it so than nobody else copies me. Please beat a team that doesn't have a thousand less students than you, and then maybe you can throw your hat in the ring. Until then, enjoy the good whether down south and leave the ballin' to the big boys. I don't know much about East but if I remember from the summer they had a decent guard but the rest of the team isn't much. Maybe they can get Zach Efron to teach 'em some moves, seeing as he is an alumni. HSM3 baby!
Hey Springville fans | 1:25 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I know you are all excited and pumped up for your team, but ease off the 'Almost' beating LP thing.

It sounds a lot like PG in football when they almost beat TV. Inside the 10 like 4 times, their FG kicker was hurt, bad calls etc. They lost 10-6 and complained all year and lost in the first or second round of the playoffs.

In other words, don't worry about the rankings. They really don't matter. IF they are that good, they will get the job done.
Anonymous | 2:58 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Haws is the best player in the state. And there is others on that team. Dillon Smith can hit the three even though he struggled last game. Tebbs is quick and a pretty good athlete all around. Austin is a beast. He struggled but he wil improve.Yes they are smaller this year and will not blow teams away but they are definately still the team to beat. They will play for a state championship again this year. Haws, hes like bret favre and the jets. He can take a bad team and make them play to there full potential. Springville played the best game they will all season and lp played there worst kindoff like LP-Davis and LP-Provo last year
RHS | 3:09 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Riverton should be ranked higher in the standings. Scott Freil is an amazing player, 25pts, and he has some pretty good backup in Ryan Thomas, who got 15, and Sean Neilson, who got 17 points in their win over murray last wed. But you'll all see later...
I wouldnt count out Tyler Haws and crew, they just need some time to come together as a team and have some others step up, and they might be awesome still
Re: anon @ 2:58 | 3:34 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Get real! Teams playing LP just need a coach that actually knows what to do against them, just like Davis did last year. LP is NOT going to win the state championship this year, Haws can't carry his team. If they can barely win it with a starting lineup that averaged what 6'6"? I doubt they will win it with just Haws. Look for LP to get EXPOSED this year!!
todd gomez | 4:22 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
wj is gonna take region 3 this year. they will go far in state too. gomez for life.
agreed | 4:24 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
i agree with todd. wj is for real this year
WEST | 4:40 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
whats up with west gettin no love? let me throw rose park in the mix, the barnes kid and corbin kid are tough to guard, barnes can go for 20+ a night but he has bought in to the team game and will break off 10+ to corbin (yes, ty corbin's son) ...look for the panthers this year baby...
Prove It | 5:09 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I see everyone speculating on the future. The truth will be proved on the court. I see some teams listed as 15 - 20 that could be top 5 in the State and some listed top 5 because of old history. Let's see who steps up in the coming weeks.
The big show | 5:25 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I agree that teams playing LP need a coach that knows what he's doing. The only team to beat LP last year was Provo. It will be interesting to watch the 2 of them go at it again this Friday.
Region 6 | 5:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Easily the toughest 4A region of the year for boys' basketball. What's up with no Cottonwood, West, or Highland? Even Granger has a good team!

West is taking it all this year!
JHS | 5:56 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Your're rigth on, Jordan is top ten and maybe top 5. Bernardo and Burgon are as good as duo as there is out there.
patrick ciochetto | 6:43 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
when i was in school, it was great to see who scored what in the paper the next day. 18pts, 15pts 8pts, 4pts; and not just for my school. i played center; but quit growing.
beetdigger pride | 7:06 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
jordan won't lose at home this year...
newspaper writers should stick | 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
to newspaper writing. . .this rankings are so out of wack! Davis? are you kiddin me? someone doesnt remember that they lost there starting 5 and have big 6 4 cowser playing 10 minutes a game ha!! bountiful is way too high. wheres viewmont? with 3 returning starters and barrett and emery gone someone else will get a chance to shoot. haha just wait until the real season starts to put out rankings
DARKHORSE | 7:40 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
It seems the DN is missing one of the most prolific teams in the state of Utah. Where is MANTI? Manti is an awesome team. They should be in the top 5, if not #1. Comon DN, let's get it right for once. MANTI #1
GO TEMPLARS
LP | 8:02 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
Is 1-0 last time I checked. Haws had 35 last time I checked. There is one team that wins state, and Lone Peak seems to be the only one that everyone says WON'T win it. Doesn't make sense considering they return the best player in the state with a strong supporting cast. Until Lone Peak loses, they are the team to beat, and like I said at the start, they are 1-0 aren't they?
hey all you people | 8:11 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
i'm not a dr. but it does say top 20?
why are you complaining about the top 25
what | 8:35 p.m. Dec. 2, 2008
was the score of dixie enterprise game i heard the dixie coach in a interview say they want to score 80 points a game
