High-speed chases for traffic offenders, misdemeanors and non-violent felonies are too dangerous to be an option for police. Nobody wants a criminal to get away, but look at the consequences of continueing the practice vs abandoning it. If only bad guys got hurt in the crashes, then okay with me. But the fact is that the police or an innocent citizen gets hurt or killed more often. A fact to consider is that Police don't know why a person is fleeing but studies show that over 90% of them are fleeing because of a misdemeanor warrant or they don't have a driver's license. The other issue is that if the police don't chase, they may all run. Not true. States (Florida is one) and cities (Reno) that have prohibited pursuits except for violent felonies have seen no increase in the number of people that flee. The bottom line is that your wife, husband, son, daughter, or the cop is at more danger than the pursued. Time for North Salt Lake to rethink its policy.
