Let's remember that many of our seniors are someones mothers and fathers. Why don't the senior organizations find a way to offer aid other than websites and phone numbers to assist them. Something like creating trouble shooters to go to their homes by either asking for volumteers or here is a crazy idea creating jobs for someone who needs one to assist and train our seniors with all of the high tech stuff that is becoming part of our lifes. Unlike the old saying you can't teach an old dog new tricks; it has been my experience that you can. It may take a little longer sometimes, but seniors learn just like anyone else. Just ask one of those in their 80s or 90s who have recently completed their college degrees.

Sure help is provided.........those ever creative cable companies already charge $50 for instructions to those that can't figure out their cable.

I am sur that some American genius will figure out a way to charge a cool $50 for plugging in the box. Heck....a super creative guy could employ illegal labor and pay them a $3 per box contract labor fee to avoid a SS card check.

RCA box OK | 11:58 a.m. Nov. 30, 2008
I have the RCA converter and the picture is good, although the signal gets disrupted occasionally. The only real problem with it is that it has a *very* weak remote that won't even penetrate the glass on my entertainment center. If I were to get a new converter, I'd probably try a different brand to see if the remote were better.

The plus to all this is that hooking up the box will probably provide much more intellectual stimulation than hours of watching the television that it provides.
RCA BOX NOT OK | 3:08 p.m. Nov. 30, 2008
got two boxes with the government coupons.
One lasted about a month. Now it is worthless. Does not work.
The other one will not get all of the channels. It picks up about eight depending on what angle the antenae is.
I agree the remote is terrible frustrating.
I don't know if other boxes are just as bad.
Maybe someone should consider filling a class action suit for the horible converter boxes.
Washington strikes again | 8:45 p.m. Nov. 30, 2008
If you are wondering how this egg was hatched read "Defining Vision" by Joel Brinkley. It's an old book that explains how the whole digital TV mess came about.
It started because TV stations and their lobbyists had to come up with a reason to snarf up frequencies before the cell phone companies got them.
They didn't even have the technology to use those frequencies back then!
Bureaucratic guilt brought about the government coupons.

Thank you so much for the info! I've been searching everywhere for reviews of converter boxes before I make a purchase.

A family member of mine bought a converter box last month that was advertised as "HD capable" the Channel Master CM-7000, but after plugging it in, there were only outputs for standard definition. And this is a coupon elgible unit too?!?!

Anyway, I urge everyone to do your research before you go out and purchase just any old digital-to-analog converter box. Some dtv boxes receive better reception than others, and some have better program menus as well.

Great article. We appreciate your hard work! I have been reading about the transition on tvconversionhelp.com for a couple of months now. It is amazing all the details that are involved in this transition. Thankfully, we have people like you and others to help keep us informed. Thank you.

Excellent article. I also have been reading up on the transition on the websites that were recommended. We all need to try to be as informed as possible, so we can help others do the same. We may not agree with the program, but if we ignore it, it will not go away.

This DTV change is so much different than going from black and white TV to Color television back in the 1940's. Why must their be a final "transition" date of February 17th, 2009?

I really hope the government reconsiders, and gives us more time to figure out what we have to do to get better reception of digital television signals.

It's not as easy as plugging in a converter box and away you go... We've been working different mounting positions with our roof antenna and receiving DTV. We finally invested in a motorized rotator that changes the position of the roof antenna with the push of a button. Not cheap!
