Although I have always loved the seasonal lighting around Christmas, I'm very disappointed in merchant and denominational attempts to live in a world of denial regarding the economic crisis that looms around the world at this time. Perhaps something, even if symbolic, that we are trying to cut back and give of our excesses to those that are truly hurting and in need. To me, the scale of the lights and the glitter are representative of acute insensitivity.

There's not too much else that can warm the heart than by taking a walk through Temple Square in the evening and basking in the "warmth" of the lights; the feeling is serene. By so doing, it helps put the "world" at bay.

I love the lights. It brings back good memories of years gone by.

Let's remember the true "Light of the World" this year.

I am so thankful for the pictures. I was there in Salt Lake a couple of days too early. I love downtown Salt Lake. Thanks so much for the great pictures. It makes me feel like I am there. Thanks for making me happy. Keep doing this Salt Lake!!

Didn't anybody notice the statue of Christ in the middle of the pond? Doesn't that say it all? We don't need to be so sad all the time. We need to have joy also. And it is okay to have it. Yes, we do need to be aware of what is happening around us but we don't need to wear sackcloth and ashes all the time. Let's be happy. It is a lot better than not. I love the lights. They make all things berable.

I am assuming the LDS Church is paying for the lighting on Temple Square, so why not? I think that with all the good the Mormons do year around it won't deny anybody anything to bring beauty into all this gloom and doom. I am Catholic and I know they had better not cancel Midnight Mass with all it's splendor! The argument of not having the lights on Temple Square is right up there with " the Vatican should sell all that art and give it to the poor". There are things that cause our minds to be transcendent, be it lighting of Temple Square or Midnight Mass. These too, bring joy into the world !

The lights at Temple Square are a gift, they are a gift to all of us. A shining light on a hill. It brings a peace and serenity. And it is free to the all who choose to enjoy its beauty. We need to find the joy in whatever we can, Thank you to the Church for this great gift. And Thank you to the leaders who council to find joy in everyday. This is a joyous time of year. Let us find the love of our Savior wherever we can.

I am enjoying the nice comments about the true meaning of Christmas, a celebration of the birth of our Savior. It is even more meaningful in these times when we witness the ACLU trying to steal Christmas - it's how we spell Grench now - ACLU.

This was such a nice place to post about the lights on Temple Square and the comments were not all from LDS. Then someone has to start with the politics. And that wil invoke another to counter....and on and on it will go until we have forgotten all the nice things people of different Faiths are saying to each other about Christmas. Why was it necessary to get in that dig about the ACLU? I give up posting here again. Someone has to come along everytime and drag politics into everything. NO ONE OR NO ORGANIZATION CAN "STEAL" Christmas. It is a spirit of the year ! Good-bye posting board!
