Black (death) friday

Death was always associated as a black day, now the shoppers have gifts with blood on them. The moniker of Black Friday (for profit day) should think about calling it something else. Or perhaps that is a fitting name, black death starting the christmas shopping season. The power of greed, commercialism, and wanton acts of destruciton.

Danny C.

This is callousness at its worst.

Maybe retailers need to rethink the Black Friday business model? This is no longer a civil society. Retailers need to stop basing their annual sales on one day out of 365. I refuse to shop on Black Friday and have done so for years. There's nothing I want to buy badly enough to stand in line and fight a crowd of rude, selfish consumers.

Way to go New Yorkers, you are no better than the rats that infest your streets. Your greed has exceeded your humanity.

I hope the city steps up on behalf of this man and his family.

Jessica

This didn't happen in the city. Read the article...it was 20 miles away. An act as awful as this could happen anywhere, sadly. People are getting worse everyday. The whole damn world is going to hell in case you haven't noticed.

CrimeWatch, Inc.

We agree with Jessica, this world is truly falling apart. In this case, Walmart and those who trampled this young man should be held accountable. We truly have become a third world country!

Where has our American spirit gone?

I shopped on Black Friday

And everyone was fairly considerate. There was no pushing or shoving, but Best Buy has the best model to avoid that...not letting everyone in at once....and a few policemen at the door ensured that no rioting would happen. It is sad that they have to take those measures, but I didn't feel threatened and was not shoved at all. Perhaps Walmart should take a hint from them. My husband and I avoided Walmart at all costs. Its crazy on a normal day

Jessica, who are you talking to about whether the Walmart was or wasn't in the city? No one here commented that it was in NYC. dismayed's comment likely refers to NYC, but doesn't directly say it. There are millions of New Yorkers who don't live in NYC.

Your point about it being 20 miles away from the city shows you don't know anything about NYC, other than perhaps just what was in the article. The distance from Manhattan is irrelevant - Queens (which is just as much a part of NYC as is Manhattan and which is where the worker who died was from) is adjacent to Nassau County on Long Island. Although it's not part of NYC, Nassau County is definitely part of the NYC metro area. You can't be closer to NYC than Nassau County. I guarantee there were people from New York City in the crowd that trampled him.

Your point about the world going to hell is well taken by itself, but your geography lesson about New York muddles the issue.

walmart needs to shoulder a fair amount of blame... they encourage this type of behavior. what fools we're becoming. it's very sad that a man's life was reduced to a bargain sale.

and don't forget, this is not the first time this type of thing has happened.

Ya but

didnt you read? Walmart had sales on plasma TVs! Americans will kill to get a deal.

Doodles

Commercialism at its best; money is more important than people.

Instead of a wild morning, wouldn't it be better to feature one item every day in November and December at an amazing price? The stores would still get their devoted shoppers, but not with the feeding frenzy that Thanksgiving weekend promotes (interesting name, "Thanksgiving weekend").

Look for a better way, human life is precious and fragile.

Tis the season. Grass consumerism, branding Jesus and ranking Christmases in dollars spend isn't removing Christ from Christmas. Saying "happy holidays" is making Christmas secular. Blame liberals, that always works.

JanSan

I sure hope that they are able to find out who these people are so that they can be prosecuted. Remember that there were more people hurt - it just that this man died. I would be so ashamed to have been there and apart of this. How are these people who will receive these gifts going to feel about them - grateful - I don't think so! This season is suppose to be about celebrating the birth of Christ - what has the world turned it into. This is so totally pathetic (sp). So mmuch for peace and goodwill to your fellowmen..

Laurence

A dreadful tragedy just before Christmas.

Words are inadequate, but my sincere condolences to this poor man's family.

Mark

I feel sick just thinking about this tragedy. Where is the Christmas spirit? What kind of people can let saving a few dollars mean so much that someone could possibly get hurt, much less killed? What has this world come to?

Mary Hosendove

My prayers goes out to the family of the young man, I am speeking for my church family Jersalem Bastist my Pastor Tony M Griffin, we will keep the family in our prayers God Bless you

I agree that Walmart was partially to blame. Stores that are going to sell items at such a substantial discount need to have enough of them on hand for everyone who wants one to be able to buy one during the period of time that it is on sale, without having to first wait in line for hours.

MetalArcJames

I am a Musician in New York but not from NewYork, And I observe everyday from this stand point how fast our "beloved Free Society" is deteriorating. think about it " A MAN WAS KILLED AND THEY STILL OPENED THE STORE THAT DAY!

Emily Vines

That is ridiculous that you say Wal-Mart is to blame. Our greed was only to blame. It's proven now, people would literally kill someone to buy that they want at a cheaper price. That's our culture folks!

robin

Everybody wants a great deal, but not at the cost of a human life. Those who stepped over him or on him will be haunted for life,if they have any compassion they will send letters, cards, flowers and let people know how stupid and careless they were. And yes our world is getting more greedy. If you dont think so just read the papers. We should all remember to love life and have more compassion for one another. I choose never to forget about what has happened. Yes most of you will forget, but just remember this one thing, this could have happened to any one of us. Be kind, considerate and show good manners, isnt that what your mother told you to do. We reap what we sow. Try sowing kindness, show common courtsey, and for goodnes sake say your sorry if you've did something wrong!
