Utah Utes football: Utah wants to reward Whittingham

Tennessee | 5:11 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
I worked for a company just out of Knoxville for many years. They love their football. Neelon Stadium holds over 106,000. I saw them play Alabama a few years ago and had to pay $150 for the worst ticket in the house even in a down year. Tennessee is beautiful but is very backwards. Many of the things you hear about the south are true. A third of the population smokes, can't have a basement due to the water levels, it rains a lot. The people are very nice, there is no state income tax and the support for the Orange is tremendous. Kyle would do well in the SEC because he preaches defense first. Kyle recruits speed before size. If the locals could give him three years, he would put Tennessee back in the top 10. The problem is the locals won't stand for losing to Florida too often. I hope he stays.

re: Tom Holmoe | 6:54 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Never!!

I wouldn't be surprised if Kyle doesn't end up somewhere else. I don't care if he is a die hard Utahn. Money talks!!

If Utah would treat their coaches a little better when they have a mediocre season, maybe then they wouldn't run away when they have a stellar season and can go to a university and football program that will be behind them in the good times and the bad.
Outstanding Coach | 8:35 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Hope the UoU keeps him, BYU keeps Bronco and the quality of ball between them just keeps going up and up like it has the last several years.

Kyle may go after bigger money. But, let's remember he has been the head coach at Utah for four years, was the defensive coordinator for 10, and earlier was an assistant coach for 6 under his father (as defensive coordinator). That is 20 years coaching at Utah.

He did not leave BYU for Utah. He played at BYU and was a graduate assistant at BYU for two seasons in the 1980s. He left for BYU for the "big money" as defensive coordinator at the College of Eastern Utah. After a year, he went to Idaho State for two years, before going to Utah.

I see him as a guy who looks at options, but I don't think he chose Utah over BYU for money--at the time Utah had just won the Fiesta Bowl and BYU had fired Crowton after three years of mediocre performance. He looked at options, but he was closer to the Utah program at that point.

I am fairly certain that Whit will leave after the season. Odds are he won't have this good of season in the next 10. If he stays after this season, He'll be here for life.

Kyle has no loyalty to Utah. If he stays, that's because he didn't get a better offer. His stock is up right now and he knows it. If he passes up an opportunity, he'll regret it, cause next year at this time, he'll be in third or fourth place, lucky to go to the Poinsettia Bowl and realizing this year was a fluke.
re: 3 plays away.... | 10:07 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008
Funny that Kyle and the Utes were 3 plays away from being 9 wins and 3 losses on the year.

BYU was 2 plays away from being 0 for 7 against the Utes since 2001. My that would have changed a lot of kitty fans views of High and not-so-mighty Bronco.

Let's see.....$675,000 (minimum) for 7 years....uh, that's $4,725,000.

Man. I should have been a college football coach...

Boise State has one good victory in their history?

What about 4 recent wins over the UTES? Haha, obviously you don't include those....

I have respect for Boise State, my suggestion would be to make the MWC stronger by taking in Boise State & give the WAC the San Deigo Aztecs. Then maybe USU or San Deigo could have one in the win column.
RE: 3 Plays | 4:52 a.m. Nov. 28, 2008
"So, let's say Utah loses those two games [TCU and OSU] - I wonder how popular Kyle would be now????"

Assuming Utah 48 BYU 24 ... I would say REALLY POPULAR... only that Ludwig HAS TO GO!!!
RE: Recruiter? | 5:02 a.m. Nov. 28, 2008
"All of the state's best players chose BYU this year."

Comparing to out-of-state talent that's not saying much. BCS III got even easier.
Davis | 8:17 a.m. Nov. 28, 2008
Want to reward him? How about a Whittingham scholarship in his name for the Chemistry or Physics students? He already gets paid more than any professors on campus.
utah hawaii | 2:15 p.m. Nov. 28, 2008
the ncaa will try and give utah a real tough oppponent unlike 2004, they dont like the little guys in the big bowls.

espically after hawaii last year.

then they can say lets not let anymore of these small time confernce schools in.
so much for Tenn | 7:31 p.m. Nov. 28, 2008
Looks like Tenn is siging Lane Kiffin, so much for that rumor. Heres hoping the W jobs goes away as well and Witt stays with us for a few more years.
UW talent | 2:53 p.m. Nov. 29, 2008
I see that many posts have said that UW has zero talent. While from an outsider, that might appear to be the truth. Truth be told, the UW had a top 20 recruiting class last year. They have also had top 33 recruiting classes the previous two years. That's 3 years in a row of strong recruiting. The talent is there. They need coaches that can develop the young talent. They have a QB that was top 7 in high school. They have many 4 star RBs and WRs. They are all freshmen and sophomores. What UW needs is a coach known for developing talent. Whittingham fits that bill as well as many others.
Cougar Fan | 8:52 a.m. Nov. 30, 2008
Utah lost Whittingham last year when UTE fans called for a change after an embarrassment at UNLV left Utah with 1 win and 3 losses. Where was Chris Hill with a vote of confidence? Whittigham went with the Money when choosing UTAH over BYU. Can Utah meet BCS offers? Whittingham went with the money last time and will this time and he should. Next year UTES will be without Johnson, Sakoda, Mack, Casteel, and Whittingham.
Utah is wasting money | 5:51 p.m. Nov. 30, 2008
Whittingham isn't going anywhere. No one else wants him. He's a mediocre coach in a mediocre conference. They have a lot of talent on that team that made up for his lack of coaching ability. Don't get me wrong, he's a good assistant coach and should stay that way. BCS teams have a better pick of good coaches. The only team that might need someone of his caliber is Washington and that would only be a few steps up from what they had. And yes I am a Ute fan. Just one that's seen more of college football than just Utah & BYU.
Skippy | 6:28 p.m. Nov. 30, 2008
it all boils down to the money.
UW DUBB IS CALLIN'... | 7:47 p.m. Nov. 30, 2008
I would love to see Kyle in Washington. We need someone who can recruit the right players. Nothing against Tyrone but, we need a change, NOW! Whittingham is not hangin' around in Utah, sorry, it's the truth!
Whit will stay | 5:21 p.m. Dec. 1, 2008
The MWC has a nice thing going these days with TCU, Utah and BYU in the top 20. We should all be cheering for Patterson, Whit and Bronco to stick around for years, if for no other reason than to force changes with the BCS rules.

Go Cougs and Utes!
I love the BLUE | 11:27 a.m. Dec. 2, 2008
I love the "Quest for Perfection" that the Coogs vocalized!!!! The Utes make fun of it---they must have had a "Quest for Imperfection"!! Any football player that doesn't want to win every game they play shouldn't be on the field. Any fan that doesn't want their favorite team to win every game isn't much of a fan.
I have been a true-blue BYU fan for decades----but I am hoping all the MWC teams that go to a Bowl game this year makes a statement and wins big--even the "team on the hill". The MWC deserves more respect.
By the way, BYU is the cause of the BCS---after winning the national championship in 1984, the BIG conferences didn't want to be shown up again, so they made it impossible for a midlevel or lower team to have that chance again. Thus, the BCS was born.
RE: I Love the Blue | 12:31 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
Keep dreaming! I'm so sure the BCS was created by BYU's win in 84... you people down South really do live in a fantasy world. The difference between the U and the Y is that we went out and played football while you all just talked about it. At the beginning of the season you were all talking about winning the National Championship, Max Hall being the Heisman, and the silly Quest for Perfection...Get Real. No wonder the team flopped look at the pressure you put on them. How about next year you just be like the U and play football and then see what happens you will probably do much better.

Live in the Real World BYU...you already claim it's your campus.
I Love the Blue | 9:56 p.m. Dec. 3, 2008
The Utes make fun of it---they must have had a "Quest for Imperfection??
You can't be serious. Just a run of the mill Y fan not grounded in reality. F.Y.I. 12-0 IS perfection 10-2 ahhh is not. See how that works, and with out the silly montra either. The Almond Joy's Got Nuts Bowl should be a very stimulating match up, good luck with that...
