I really hope that all this money that is being poured into "arts education" will help alter the mentalities of "arts educators", but I won't hold my breath. From my experience with arts educators (I work in the arts) they know very little about how to create fine art - NONE I've met have experience in painting or drawing or know much about 2D/3D design principles; which are the foundation to creating and critically thinking about the arts. They are trained in pedagogy first and then crafts - think noodles and glue or paper-plate masks. I wish that ALL those seeking to tech art and art appreciation in our schools held degrees in studio art or art history.
Similar problems exist for "music education" according to my sister who teaches music in Manhattan. She out and out HATES "music educators".
Makes me think that it's true - those who can DO those who can't TEACH.
USU has done good work in the arts, and this gift will strengthen it. I'm a USU music alum from 40 years back. The arts program has made huge progress in that time.
This is awesome. I remember in elementary school thru 4th grade we had an art project every week, whether it was learning to weave paper or making pop-up books or watercolors or even (horrors) noodle pictures, I loved it. In 5th grade, I moved to a school with a lot less funding and we only did an art project a month. What a let-down! I remember waiting anxiously for the last Friday of the month, for the few precious hours we spent doing arts and crafts.
I'm a professional artist now, so I guess I wasn't too scarred but I still remember how much I loved doing art in elementary. This gift is wonderful.
