Max will live with this everyday until next year. Although humbled tonight, he
will return next year with renewed passion.

Max Hall folds like a newspaper under pressure. Max Hall hasn't reached the
point of John Beck where he can cooly direct a team under hostile and pressure
defence. Hall implodes whereas Beck showed leadership. Maybe another year of
maturity and coaching will bring him to that level but he sure ain't there
yet. Hall STUNK it up against TCU and Utah and for BYU it's back to the
drawing board with their QB.

Well, unfortunately Max probably won't win the Heisman this year. Big 12
has some solid QBs. But he's got to easily be the frontrunner for the

As easy as it is to criticize Max Hall, there is no question that he could
mature to John Beck's level by next season. I've even seen an increase
in his maturity from last year to this year. He really hasn't had to face a
lot of adversity, and so to experience a game like this, for him, will be good
for his character. As far as pressure is concerned, I was really impressed at
the O-line and how they did against a talented, athletic Utah defensive front,
just as a side note. They CERTAINLY learned from the TCU game.

well it was fun while it lasted but it is time to jump back off the BYU band
wagon. Tired of Bronco and all his Steven Covey power of positive thinking
fireside chat. Expect BYU to slip back into the Gary Crowton style medocity for
2009 but I think as long as the program gets 8+ wins a season that is good
enough. At least the pre-game firesides are good even if they players
aren't.

Max Hall's performance wasn't about leadership, folding under

-Hall telegraphs where he is going to throw because he makes up his mind who he is going to throw to @ the snap. Watch his head, he never looks off the receiver that he wants to throw too (for the most part Austin Collie). That may work against the UNLVs of the world, but it doesn't work against BCS caliber teams as TCU and Utah exposed.
-A byproduct of Hall watching only the side of the field where he want's to throw is that he fails to see defenders moving into his intended target area from the opposite side of the field.
-Hall has got to:

No defense for Max Hall's pathetic performances against both TCU and Utah.
Come on, the kid stunk it up in both games and took his team out of the game
with int's and fumbles. Hall needs a ways to grow before I consider him to
be a complete college QB. Oh and if Max get's rattled having little ole
Utah in his face how will he ever impress anyone at next years NFL combine where
the standard is tight man to man defense? As far as I'm concerned Max will
be the real deal when he beats a quality team with a winning record. Anybody can
throw 20 td's against San Deigo or Wyoming.

Lets face it, alot of the blame for this game can fall squarely on the normally
awesome Max Halls shoulders. Throw out those six turnovers and BYU wins. I
don't think that he can say that was a "team effort".
On the bright side, he was named Utah's MVP!

Austin Collie and Harvy Unga were studs in this game, and I'm sure that Hall will redeem himself next year!

Well Max you had a tough game. Going in to this one I don't think anyone
would have predicted this, but you just have to focus on what is ahead. At least
you get another shot at them next year!!
In the end at least you know there is more to life than football. I know you didn't stick your mission through but hopefully you at least learned that. Your teammates know that and can handle losing with grace. Good for Jan Jorgensen. That kid is a stud!

Congrats UTAH!!! I am a huge BYU fan but I am sick and tired of the pathetic
defense that has been displayed over the past 15 years, even when the Great
LaVell was there. Our DB's are terrible. #16 got beat time and time again
and never got pulled. FIRE Bronco for having a poor defense. It is
nobody's fault but his!!!
Max Hall is a great QB against poor to average teams. Against great teams, he is brutal. Not only did he have 6 TO's, he had 6 balls batted down.
Collie is a stud. Good thing we had him. Would love to see him suit up for Utah in the BCS Bowl Game! AH

I couldn't agree more with Hall is no Beck. Hall imploded tonight. Not
only did he have 6 turnovers, he had a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty after one
interception, he also had several passes that should have been picked off. He
said that last year he was too fired up and that is why he didn't play so
well in the Utah game. What was his problem this year? Frankly, I am so upset
with BYU loss (because they had the talent to beat the Utes) that I am wishing
that Bronco would turn the offense over to another quarterback. But, that is
not going to happen. All I have left is to hope that Max Hall will mature and
improve and this won't happen again next year. Right now, I don't
have allot of faith in Max Hall and his ability to overcome his faults.

I like sports and player football and when my daughter received a scholarship to
BYU decided to attend my first game there. I came away knowing that the team
had talent but the no huddle disorganization on the offense and the 3 man line
on the defense would be their Achilles heel.
Utah realized that Hall like Peyton Manning would try and alter plays at the line. They effectively changed their sets at the last second and flustered Hall into being out of rythm.
The only way Hall overcomes this is if Mendenhall changes his system on both sides of the ball. I also agree that Hall is not the same as Beck under pressure. But, I say again that if the system changes then he will be better as the quarterback.

sorry, but as a byu fan i'll be the first to admit that hall had a horrible
mental game today. but blame it on the coaches too. utah saw they could get
their hands and block passes right and left. the byu coaches had no response.
but either way, hall makes some really bad decisions. and he has all season.
he's up and down frankly. hopefully next year he matures a little more.
he could still be a good one.

Last season nobody new who the starting quarterback would be untill Kade Cooper
got injured. Max had to battle for his job and that can be very motivating. If
you dont have anybody with a snowballs chance of taking your spot, you dont have
to work as hard. Im not saying Max Hall did that, but I am saying we saw a more
efficient quarterback last season. I think he needs to find it again. Put in the
film time to be the best. They were his mistakes against Utah and TCU, and he
should shoulder the blame, it will make him better in the future. He should
study game film and learn how to read man defenses better. But what do I know.
Without the turnovers BYU takes the lead in the third quarter. Without the
turnovers he doesnt put his D in short field situations. The D-fence did their
job. They were supposed to be the Y's acheles. Just as I thought, the game
was won when BYU had the ball. Whoever won that matchup would win the game. And
they did. Good luck in the BCS game Utes.

Everyone talks about Max Halls great numbers, but they are meaningless. BYU has
only played 3 teams with a winning record (utah, TCU, Air Force), and Max stunk
in 2 of them. It shows that Max isn't that good, and just puts up big

You guys kill me, sit at home on your computer and beat up on a college kid who
had a real bad game yesterday. I am sure with your TIVO you were able to rewind
and see exactly what and where he should have thrown the ball. I also love the
lets get rid of Bronco crowd, 10-2 not to bad. Bronco and his staff have
forgotten more football than you folks will ever know. Bronco is trying to
build a program, the way it should be done, especially if you are the coach at
BYU. Part of life is getting knocked down from time to time, the key is getting
up and battling another day. That is the premise that the BYU football program
is built on, they will get up (they already have) and they will battle to be
better. The Quest is not a destination, it is a journey, what happened
yesterday is part of Bronco's Quest, what happens Monday when the team gets
together will be the next step in the quest, read what Jan Jorgenson had to say
and maybe you will understand. Congratulations Utah, you deserve the
Championship, and the BCS Bowl.

Here is a quote from Hall," "I take a lot of the responsibility,"
Hall said. "Man, I think our guys played hard. We just made mistakes. . . .
I take the bulk of [the blame], but it is a team effort and we just got to
regroup." He says, "We just made mistakes...it is a team
effort". I just lost a ton of respect for Hall. The word Max is I not we.
The team played well enough to win and you let them down. The team has no reason
to regroup. They played well, you didn't and only you. He was not
pressured hardly at all and was never sacked. I thought Hall was a leader. I at
least thought he would man up and take the blame like a man and he didn't.
That is a disgrace to not only his team but to himself as a man. Max you are a
dissapointment! Be a man and take responsibility for your play! Congrats Utah!

I for one am still impressed with Hall, Unga, Collie, and Jorgen, Mendenhall, et
all. They are all important parts of an excellent squad. So Hall had a bad day
- it can happen, and when it does against a very good team, things can go bad in
a hurry. I think that the Y responds next year and maybe gets its BCS birth.
Max Hall is no John Beck is no Jim McMahon is no John Elway blah blah blah.
Hall is a very good QB and will be back.

Utah played a great game on both sides of the ball...they truly deserve and
earned the Conference title.
BYU had a great year but has had weaknesses exposed under pressure. Max Hall will do just fine....
I remember (actually visiting with Marc Wilson, long ago Cougar....) who threw 6 TD's one week and 6 interceptions @ Wyo. the next....his perspective was great..."I found it difficult to pass a football through a brown jersey.
Max had the same problem last night with red.

As usual Utah fans put a little negative side on a great effort and great win by
their normal uncivilized behavior before, during and after the game. For most
Ute fans it's not about football, it's about having the chance to let
go all of the hate they have inside and act like fools. Congrats to the team.
It's just sad that a lot of Utah fans can perform equally admirable.

For those who mock Mendenhall and how he coaches, you are out of line.
If you recall, he came into a team that was decimated in many ways. Do you recall several players being suspended and criminally charged for rape? Do you remember the other players and drunk driving? Thefts?
BYU went from Lavell Edwards to complete chaos under Gary Crowton. Mendenhall inherited a team that was completely lost, recruiting was a mess and two or three consecutive losing seasons. He not only needed to win games but more importantly field a team capable of living BYU's Honor Code, which is the strictest in the nation.
Let me see, Utah went from Ron McBride (great coach and program) to Urban Meyer (better coach and program) then to your current coach.
BYU has not had such a nice transition between three tremendous coaches and programs.
Mendenhall has done an incredible job and I applaud him for it. He get's his team focused and on the same page. And if you worry that he uses "gimmicks" please stick to flipping burgers because the corporate world (I consult for a dozen of them) use these "gimmicks" daily for the same reason Mendenhall does.

All I want is a good game, and this one was a good game for the majority of it.
That last quarter just stunk. When it rains it pours. I'm not worried
about hall. He'll be fine. This game was a blip on the screen.

Looking outside in, BYU was the better team; they were able to move the ball on
basic boring plays. Utah just had a lot of trick plays and took advantage of
the BYU mistakes; Utah doesn't have the speed as a BCS school and they
barely beat New Mexico. Put Utah against Texas Tech (who got beat by OK)and
Tech will have an easy game because of their speed.

He needs to earn his spot as the starter next year. He is a hot headed QB with a
great arm and not enough mental toughness. He let his team down and fans.
Instead of taunting the Utah fans prior to the game, he should have kept the

Folks who want to beat up on Hall are missing 90% of what happened. Because
there are 10 other guys out there on offence who couldn't get open. And 11
other guys out there on defense who couldn't stop Utah from getting quick,
easy scores after every turnover. Utah receivers were open by a mile most the
night. Folks who say that "Hall is bad" miss the point that this year
Utah is really good. Better than our guys unfortunitly. But being 10-2 and
headed for a bowl game is a very, very good season. Not as good as
Utah's--but we'll get them in Provo next year and seek our revenge,
and do it WITH HALL AT QB! Go Cougars!

Good job Utah your Coaching staff pregame prep was FANTASTIC. I am a true blue
COUGAR who has a U of U diploma and was simply amazed at the masterful game plan
and player fallow through and execution, GOOD WIN. The Mountain West is sending
the best team to bust the BCS go UTES from a BLUE UTE.... Oh yes people get
ahold of your prejudice and bigotry, to heckle for fun is one thing, but to HATE

Let me add a voice of strong support for Max Hall. He is a very good quarterback
who will get better.
This game will be seen as a massive growing experience both as a person and a quarterback.
And while so many BYU fans are ready to dump on Max Hall it is sad that you do not give a massive dose of credit to that Utah defense!!

I can find a couple good things from this loss. it will motivate the team next
year to seek revenge, and with only a couple key players leaving it will be
easier, especially against a new Utah quarterback, who didn't see that much
time this season.

BYU has had a strategy of "scheduling down" as a way of rebuilding
their program and getting fans back in their seats. The trouble with that
approach is what you saw in the TCU and Utah games. You can get away with a lot
when you're playing a hapless team like Washington or Utah State or some
FCS team. When you go up against a top ranked defense such as TCU's or
Utah's those things just don't work.
Max was throwing long passes into double coverage when a defender was right on top of his receiver. He easily could have been picked off more than he was. Utah was also collapsing the pocket around him and he still tried to make the play rather than throwing the ball away or taking a sack. All you're going to do with that strategy against real opposition is embarrass yourself.
I think the real "return to glory" will only come once BYU starts scheduling some better teams again and learns how to play up to their level rather than fooling themselves into thinking how good they are because they are beating up on inferior opponents.

Forget it. We're stuck with Max-I another year. He'll find a way to
look like a deer in headlights again a few times--usually against really good
defenses, like TCU and Utah have. Seems to be in Max-I's DNA.
I'm sure some of BYU's non-conference competition next year will have learned how to defend Max from those two games. They shouldn't be lollipops like Washington and UCLA were this year. Although, for some weird reason, that seems to keep happening to BYU. Schedule great teams, then get them on down years when your own team is on an up year. No bang for the buck.
I'm really more disappointed in the lack of use of the RBs than in how badly Max played. That's directly on Anae's shoulders, and to an extent, Bronco's for not realizing how little Anae uses his best talents. Harvey's never disappointed the way Hall has. So why is Hall featured more in the offense? Dumb!
Congrats to Utah for bringing the BCS dollars into the MWC. About the only consolation in BYU's loss.

I am a Ute but I sure respect Max Hall. He had a very bad game but this guy is a
great QB and there have been many times this season when I would have traded
Hall for BJ straight up. Last night BJ played awesome and Hall didn't, but
I still think very highly of this guy.
