Not that it is a big deal but BYU didn't wait for the U to finish their senior salute. They still had five or six players to announce. The haka should probably not ever be done again anyway. A lot of people find it very offensive. I have to tip my hat to BYU players. I am a Ute but they were very classy after the game and surprisingly no interesting comments from Collie. Hats off to both teams.
AK Cougar | 12:32 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Jan Jorgensen said it correctly about classless fans on both sides. Thank Jan for expecting better of the fans.
Who cares???? | 12:58 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
You get blown out twice in your own conference who really cares what bowl you go to. I mean does any one really feel like spending money to watch this medocre bunch of fireside speakers play in some second rate bowl game???? I say, send TCU and Airforce and let BYU concentrate on basketball.

BYU | 1:20 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Is not a bad team, as can be seen by their ranking.
The game was not a blowout until the 4th quarter when the Utes started stepping on the jugular and the Cougars did nothing to respond besides give the Utes more chances. I find it funny that Who Cares follows up a comment about classless fans by making a completely stupid, biased, classless comment. Im not even a BYU fan, im all for USC. But i cant stand the stupid things people say about these teams on both sides. BYU doesn't suck. Utah doesn't suck. If they sucked, this game wouldn't mean anyhting. BYU is obviously more than mediocre, the game was within 3 points almost all the way throughout. They are talented, but have problems containing athletic quarterbacks and have a sketchy secondary. Their offense is usually unstoppable, but poor decision making by Max Hall and good defense on behalf of the Utes late were huge. Congrats to both teams for awesome years. I honestly think the MWC shows that football needs a playoff system more than any other. Awesome teams that will not get the chance to show the overall strength of the MWC nationally.
dj | 1:25 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Get rid of the Haka. What's the point? All it does is incite the opposing team and fans, and does little to motive the Cougars. Just go out an play with some class and style and forget the "in your face" garbage. It's stupid.
Mark in Peoria | 1:37 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I'm a Ute fan, but to say BYU's season is a bust because of two road losses to Top-15 teams is wrong. Show some class.

BYU will be a strong pull where ever it goes. The Vegas bowl could provide a decent match-up with Cal. TCU should definately get a shot at a team from a BCS conference.

I think the Poinsettia bowl might be good for the Cougars this year, if they could get a decent opponent (say Maryland or Wake Forest).

Predictions:
AFA will likely go to the Armed Forces bowl and play Tulsa.
BYU will go to the Poinsettia Bowl and play Rice.
TCU will go to Vegas and play Arizona.
Colorado State will go to New Mexico and play Nevada.

Jorgensen did hit the nail on the head. Our group of people got along quite nicely with the two cougar fans in from of us.
rvalens2 | 4:09 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
It's all but written in stone ... BYU will end up going to Vegas. BYU is a guaranteed money maker for them.

Re: Austin Collie

You did great out there today. You have nothing to be ashamed of and left it all out on the field. Thanks for keeping the game exciting.

And yes, that's coming from a Utah fan.
Vegas or San Diego | 4:12 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Either way you get stuck playing a pathetic Pac 10 team. Of course I don't think the Pac 10 7th place team will qualify so the Ponsietta could choose Boise. If I was a BYU fan I think I would rather take a gamble on the Ponsietta Bowl then play a weak Arizona or Cal team in the Vegas Bowl. This is all assuming that Boise doesn't get an at large bid into a BCS bowl. Not sure what WAC bowl commitments are but either a TCU or BYU vs Boise will be a great game to watch.
LV Bowl has a tough decision | 5:00 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
When they meet behind closed doors, Las Vegas Bowl officials will face a gut-wrenching decision. "Do we invite TCU by phone or should we send someone out to Fort Worth?"
Ken, Las Vegas NV | 5:29 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Jorgensen is right... the only time it's appropriate to storm the field is when BYU wins (i.e. MWC championships and last years Las Vegas Bowl). Get off your soapbox BYU. Go eat some jello or drink your diet cokes and let the Utes enjoy the moment.

Don't worry Ute fans, us Rebels down here have your back, especially after how much BYU cried after we beat them in the men's basketball tournament. Just let them sulk for the next year and remind them how you went unbeaten and went to the BCS.
Ute Fan | 7:01 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I'm a Ute fan and think that Jorgensen did the classy thing in the face of classless fans. Growing up with my parents cheering for BYU and with me attending the U, I'm embarrassed by fans on both sides of the rivalry. I wish the best for the Cougars and hope that Unga and Reed are ok. I hate to see any players on either side of the ball injured.

What a classless person you are! I'm a UTE through and through, but don't like hearing classless fodder like that
gary | 7:30 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
like I said in these comments sections back in September, Hall is just an average "BYU System" QB and will put up big numbers against average teams but will choke in the big games because he has tunnel vision and is unable to pick up alternate receivers and thus good DB's read his eyes because they know he will not look but only in his initial direction, resulting in INT's......and as commented on before, BYU's LB's are below par this year and both the TCU and Utah games showed just how weak the LB corp is this year.

It a stupid tradition and it should go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: "who cares"

You're comment is religiously bigoted, and unwelcome in this forum.
TGH | 8:01 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I don't have strong feelings either way about the Haka, but to all of you saying the tradition is stupid, get a little perspective please. BYU started it to honor the father of a BYU player from New Zealand who had died. Do you really want to call a tradition that means something very deeply to a BYU player and his family stupid? If so, you're more insensitive than I realized.

Besides, it's something the team has done to help them get ready for the game. They do it in on THEIR sideline in front of THEIR own fans. They don't do it in the middle of the field, and they don't get in the faces of their opponents, so for those haters among you to be so offended, I say grow up.
cougar fan | 8:20 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Congrats to Utah. I hope you can represent the MWC well. We need to show that we deserve and automatic bid. I hope you get to play a good opponent and take it to them. Not like Pitt last time. I'd love to see you go against Texas Tech.

The universities seriously need to do something to protect the players after the games.

What's the spread on how bad Alabama/Florida whips the Utes if the Utes go to the Sugar Bowl?
RE: J "who cares" | 8:36 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Get over it. If BYU is going to advertise that they do firesides at all their away locations, it's open for comment.

And yes, BYU is a mediocre team this year, undeserving of being in the Top 25. Their only win over a D-1 team with a winning record was at Air Force. A good win, but hardly justification for being in the Top 25.

Missing persons from the 2008 BYU Season

1-Maxie Hall, strangely disappears at ANY BIG moment. Additionally he cannot handle a lick of pressure, so the Vegas Bowl won't be kind to Max, too big of a stage.

2-BYU D, However this one is not a surprise, we haven't seen them for years.

3-And last but not least the Classless, Prideful, Quest seeking BYU fans. Poof, they disappear after being soooooo over confident at the beginning of their "Quest for Perfection" what a COMPLETE FACIAL. At least Wittingham doesn't have to "talk" he acts and provides results. Nice Job Whit!!!!

Ahhh yes the silence of Provo, until next August:)

Max did a decent job of looking down progression last year. This year he just trusted his initial read to often. He's a good Qb. He had a terrible quarter and a half. That's all.
Uteman | 9:24 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I love the Utes and, naturally, hate the Team Down South as much as anyone. But I have to say that the BYU players have shown nothing but class in their comments after the game. Most of the BYU fans I encountered at the game were a credit to their school as well. Their good nature is important. It will help them get over their coming bowl game loss.
Max Hall | 9:28 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
... way to step it up in the two biggest games this year (TCU-Utah). 0 td 7 int 2 lost fumbles. Good luck in the bowl game where you will likely face another quick and athletic defence! Just goes to show the kind of teams BYU played all year.

The Haka needs to go!
Henry Drummond | 10:06 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Now that the game is over maybe its time to give a tip of the hat to our opponents. I'm a Ute fan, but I think there are some great players down south in particular:

Austin Collie. He is fast and tough and smart. He consistently does a great job on the returns. He get's other players open because you really have double cover him.

Harvey Unga. Its hard to bring this guy down. Another guy who requires multiple defenders to slow him down.

Jan Jorgenson. Great leader on defense and class act. Thanks for helping everyone on both sides keep perspective. I know he'll root for Utah in the BCS game and mean it.

See you in Provo next year.
Kyle Luekenga | 10:13 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
What the deal with the byu flags? I thought byu wasn't going to bring them anymore. They incite fans.
Also, the Haka fired me up.

Yes, get rid of the Haka, even the HS teams are doing it. Last time I looked we were in Utah and not the Islands.
Utes nice job, you gave us an old fashioned butt kick'in.
And to all the cheap shot comments, funny how much courage you have siiting in front of your computer.
Blue2TheBone | 11:07 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Good game Utes! I'm a fan of the Utes, but not when they play the Cougars. The better team definitely won last night. Good luck to them in their bowl. Here is some advice for my beloved cougars as they prepare for the Poinsetta Bowl....
1. When the opportunity is there to run the ball...please run...
2. Need better linebackers and DB's....Brian Johnson 30-36....holy hannah....
3. Doman...please work with Max Hall and inform him of checking off his receivers...6 interceptions happen when you go to the well too often....
Re: Uteman | 11:11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Compare that with comments by Whittingham, Johnson, and many others insulting the "quest," BYU, the haka, and whatever else they could think of. I've never read more inciteful blather than Utah's post game comments. The fans couldn't even wait for the time to run out on the clock to rush the field and tear down the goal posts.

It's just too bad that BYU players have that much restraint. I certainly wouldn't have.

It all starts with the Utah coaching staff. They are spiteful and arrogant. Whittingham is the kind of guy that will kick onsides when he's up by 50 points. It will bring me much pleasure to watch you get creamed by Alabama or Florida.
What is defense? | 11:49 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
A little too much pounding on Max Hall. All year long he's carried this team on his shoulders with no help from a defense so porous that he was playing from behind for most of the year.

Utah had a fantastic defensive scheme that led to key turnovers.

Did anyone see the BYU defense do anything to get a turnover? To give the offense good field position? To defend a single pass? To stop a 20-second 60-yard drive for a touchdown? To give emotional life to the offense with a big play?

Hall, Collie and company are responsible for two straight ten-win regular seasons, a bowl victory, 4th and 18, national recognition, 2 consecutive top-20 rankings, a conference championship, and they have another season to add to their glittering performances.

21 and 4 as a starter is not bad.
Texas Ute | 11:50 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Thanks to both teams for making the year interesting. At times BYU was the better team, but self destructed with interceptions and a fumble. The trash talk etc. that has come out of these "comments" hides the fact that both teams are better off because of the other. I hope they both continue to have success.
Fans needed but NOT Jerks | 12:22 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Every college team needs supportive fans, but NOT jerks. The players for BOTH Utah and BYU showed a lot of class in and after this game. Only a three point difference at the end of Q-3 and if it wasn't for BJ's great touchdown pass at the end of the half BYU would have been in the lead att he end of Q-3. I am a hard core UTAH fan and enjoying this vistory in spite of the IDIOT fans from both sides. Although the Y-ners do seem to be crying more than usual.
Interesting... | 12:32 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I've read several comments about how certain people can't wait to see Utah get "creamed" by Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma or whoever.
Yeah, the Utes may get thumped by a top flight football program, but at least they made it there.
Don't you wish you could say the same about your team??
Hope you enjoy Las Vegas, or Memphis or wherever you wind up next month.

congrats to byu on making your conquest to 3rd place in a mediocre conference and qualifying for the blue rug bowl.
Re: Interesting | 1:18 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
No, just because we made it there doesn't make it ok. If we are going to play with the big boys we better be ready to play with the big boys. We need to be ready to compete if we are going..........

Well, the last three BYU, UTah games have landed me in the police station filling out a police report. Three years ago a ute fan (Male Student) punched my girl friend, Last year another one (male student) spit on my mom, and this year (my personal favorite) a student pulled a knife on me. (I wasn't even wearing blue to avoid all this. I was wearing a green coat.) Classy ute fans. Very classy. Say what you want about Y fans but they are nothing like the redneck utes.

I am for neither team, but read the Desnews for info from back home. I will be honest, The U fans are having a difficult time winning with class and the Y fans are pretty straightforward with praise for Utah. To U fans, step up and show what a champion looks like. Congrats on your win. I hope both of the teams do well in their bowls. Record is what something like 22-2 combined. Good for your conference!
BYU at San Diego | 3:11 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
As a Utah Fan and a fan of the MWC-Utah, I would love see BYU fans fill up Qualcomm Stadium to show the power of the Utah teams. We know that the Sugar, Fiesta and Orange Bowls will be packed with fans. Our teams deserve better than the MWC. We've outgrow this silly conference. As fans, we want bigger and better.

Vegas would be stupid to wait until Dec 8th to make an invite. Give fans 12 days to get travel. Especially if they invite TCU. flights to Vegas 12 days out will be expensive.

Did the yewt fans hoist Max Hall on their shoulders after storming the field. They should have. He was their hero, their MVP.

Next season, keep him off the juice before a game.

Give credit where credit is due, and the yewts deserve credit. However, Hall was passing to the yewts with no kittens in sight. Did he forget his team's colors? WTH!

10-2, 8-4, 7-5, just BEAT THE YEWTS! The bowl game scenario won't be any different.
