Brian Johnson showed great poise and leadership and Max Hall showed that he crumbles under pressure and tried to do way to much. Utah played phenomenal and deserves the win, BYU needs to head back to Provo and should be hanging there heads for giving up.
Great game! | 8:42 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Great game, great rivalry! The regular season is over for both of you, don't forget your a-game in the bowls... the MWC need the money to bust the BCS forever!
Get this correctly | 8:42 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008

Nothing wrong with a little trash talking as long as we know this is still ONLY a football game and we are only trash-talking about football teams AND NOT University of Utah institution or Brigham Young University institution, NOR any religions.

For those who take it more seriously than a game and call others name (classless, etc), or bring religion and/or the 2 instutitions into it, YOU ARE THE ONEs WHO SHOULD BE SHAMEFUL.

Anyone know how many starters are returning for BYU and Utah? I think the Y is returning a fair amount of starters on offense.
BCS is a fraud... | 8:45 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
As a Ute fan, I have to admit something. As happy as I am we went undefeated, it doesn't matter. We can't win a National title. Even had BYU gone undefeated they would not have won a national title. So what gives? We are left with what? Another BCS game that means nothing but money. But no chance to win the big prize. We have to implement a playoff right now. BYU was fortunate they were the only undefeated team in 84' and got a title under the old system. But we have gone undefeated twice since then and have meaningless BCS games to show for it. Honestly, I can't get too exited about a MWC trophy. Forgive me.

Go Utes. I am quite pleased with the victory. What a fun game. I was happy for Paul Kruger, he played great. It is great to see another perfect season. It is interesting that BYU didnt call more running plays seeing as that we werent stopping Unga very well. Not that I mind of course seeing as that Max Hall threw more to the opposing team than to his own it seemed.
Such a fun game this is.
Go Utes!

By the way - Collie is still open.

Did I read some of these comments right? Are bYu fans calling us classless for running up the score? Lets see, byu 59-0 over ucla or 44-0 over wyoming. But we are classless for slamming you guys? I cant stand the hypocrisy just admit you lost to a better team.

I graduated from BYU and wanted them to win, but there is no denying that Utah deserved to win tonight. That is all you can really say about this. BYU wasn't as good this year as I hoped they would be. They have a great squad going into next year though so maybe things will be better for them. Maybe they can end ranked in the teens if they win their poinsettia bowl game. That is all speculation though. What is for sure is that Utah is deservedly going to a BCS game. I would say they have a great shot at beating whoever they play. Congratulations Utah.

... the whole thing if you want a playoff the works. The Obama Playoff Series (OPS) will still get you the 6 BCS conference champs and two at large teams... Okay, this year that would include Utah and they would at least have a chance, but what about Ball State and BSU, sure MWC fans might say they play weak schedules, but that is hypocrisy, because that is what the BCS is saying about Utah. You need a system with eight 12 teams conferences with the best 96 teams in the nation. Sure, that means that some teams might never win their conference and never get to the playoffs, but they should consider the FCS, but teams like Mich, UW, and WSU will come around again and be contenders.
Re: SoCalUteFan | 8:03PM | 8:57 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008

I called the hype "Max Hall for Heisman" a big joke.

I refered to Max Hall as choking in big games --TCU and Utah.

There is no poor sportmanship about that.

Collie is still open - - because the Utes have taken the ball the other way!
Anonymous | 8:59 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Utah beat likely Rose Bowl bound OSU.
And TCU and BYU are quality wins.

BYU beat Washington, who still hasn't won. And UCLA who has 4 wins.

BYU's best win is against Air Force. That means you are not that good.

I have a feeling that next year the following will happen.

Meaningless wins
delusional fans
Coaches who refuse to run the ball
DB's that are really slow
And another defeat to Utah
Ludwig did it | 9:00 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I must tip my hat to Ludwig, I have been calling for his head all year, but he finally got it right and called a great game. As for all of you he bash Johnson, 30-036 300+ and 4 TDs baby!!!!!!! GO UTES!!!!

Congratulations, Utes! I'm setting aside my BYU sweatshirt to root for y'all in your bowl game. Way to do us expat Utahns proud!
At least we had hope... | 9:01 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
But no, the Y fans will never shut up.

I wondered how long it would take before someone mentioned the '84 nc and the Heisman trophy. (I can just see him sitting in the corner, holding his national shampionship memorabilia rocking back and forth... back and forth... back and forth)

Congratulations Utes - you've earned this.

Congratulations Cougs - you've just earned a million dollars.

Go Utes! | 9:01 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Each camp has their good and bad fans. Props to the classy on both sides. To the poor winners and poor losers, get a life.

Great game BYU, I was worried until Max started spreading the ball around to Utah defenders.

Oregon State | 9:02 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008

will replace BYU as 16th in the polls tomorrow.
OSU is within 1 win of Rose Bowl.

Utah's (current) top 25 victims this year (from best to worst rank): TCU, BYU, OSU.

Not too many team can claim that.

I love all that all my friends that are Cougar fans are preaching sportmanship after talking trash for two years.

I love that Utah has broken the BCS twice and have done so with dominant wins over the team down south.

I love that Austin Collie was not "doing what he was supposed to do off the field so that he could be blessed on the field" this year.
Ute out east | 9:05 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Cougar fans-

Are you still "fully invested?"
Home field matters... | 9:06 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
BYU went undefeated at home and so did TCU and Utah.

BYU had to play two top 25 teams on the road, (TCU, Utah.) Only two losses of the year.

TCU played two top 25 teams on the road (Oklahoma, Utah). Only two losses of the year.

Utah played zero ranked teams on the road. And what do you know, they go undefeated. Home field matters. The Utes took advantage of the favorable schedule. Next year will be BYU's better chance to go undefeated as the schedule will favor them.
Hall for MVP | 9:07 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
wow! hats off to the Ute nation tonight. 5 blocked passes (or was it more, I lost count)? I think it would be interesting to see which quarterback had better yards for the Utes, Hall or Johnson. With all those interceptions (and a fumble), I wasn't sure what team he was playing for.

And, btw, to all those who say you shut down BYU's big guns (Collie and Unga), were you watching the same game? Collie had ANOTHER 100+ yard receiving game tonight, ran 70yds on the opening kickoff and juked his man most of the night. And Unga had a better run game against a top 10 ranked rush defense than against bottom feeder SDSU. When it comes down to it, Hall gave the game away or the Utes took it away (their hands were all over the ball tonight--including a couple of dropped int.s).

Congrats, Utes. Do some damage in the BCS for us despondent cougar fans.

come on everyone byu tcu and af are all great teams..we beat them all..some luck lots of good players ...lets all grow up and give others credit...GO UTES WIN UR BCS GAME!!!
haha | 9:08 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
If utah is classless, Oklahoma is something from another planet. That being said, at the time, more than two minutes, a 17 point lead which, while unlikely, isn't safe? A field goal puts you up 20, still three scores. Plus, there is the idea of BCS sytle points but I wouldn't expect kewg fans to know anything about that. Funny, the last time we saw a good utah team in this rivalry the score was 52-21, one more td and we'd have the same margin! if you would have told me byu would score 24 before the game I would have been horrified, but bj stepped up and the d was awesome. Sure hall threw em, but there were some dang good catches. Go utes baby! Let's make it 2 for 2!
Big Games.... | 9:08 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Utah gets up to play big games, BYU doesn't. Period.
Learn Lessons | 9:09 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
It's obvious that BYU sets itself up for most of these comments. Don't broadcast a 'theme' that puts pressure on your players, builds unrealistic expectations in your fans and makes you look downright arrogant. Be quiet. Be very quiet. Then play hard and let what you do on the field do the talking for you.

Utah didn't brashly say they would go undefeated, get to the BCS and win the Mountain West Conference championship. They simply went to work and did it. It would be far more impressive to go this route than win a bowl game last year by a fingertip and then proclaim you are now ready for an undefeated BCS season. I for one and sick of the constant drumbeat of how much better the Y is than everyone else. Time to humble up, lose the swagger and get back to work.
"Fully Invested" | 9:09 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
SELL, SELL, SELL!!!!!

Cougar fans, you're t-shirts need to go. Your investment has tanked and it's time to bail out.
byu fan | 9:10 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
The Utes were incredible tonight..just as they were in 04 against the Coogs. They know how to win the games that matter..unlike the Bronchitises. Max relies on Collie way too much. STOP STARING HIM DOWN MAX!!!! You should get a clue when you have 8 passes batted down and another 4 passes that should have easily been interceped. Let's see, that would have been 9 interceptions and a fumble. SWEET! Can't wait to hear the next Broncoism next year. Just a suggestion...nothing with the word Perfection in it would be good...ya think?
Linus | 9:10 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I'm a BYU graduate (1965) and a Cougar fan. I congratulate Utah and their coaches for their fine year. They recognized a weakness in Max Hall, prepared to capitalize on it, and succeeded big time. If Max ever wants to be a great quarterback, he is going to have to learn to look off his intended receiver and deceive the opponent's defense.

I have two things to say that have needed to be said and understood all year long.
1. BYU's QUEST FOR PERFECTION was never a claim of perfection. Every team should be on such a quest. After all, what team doesn't pursue a perfect season. But the truth is that BYU's quest isn't over, and likely never will be. A loss doesn't end the quest to be men of character and men of honor. You who demean BYU are without the right to declare the quest ended.
2. BYU's defense didn't lose this game tonight. They actually played well enough to win if Hall hadn't had such a horrendous outing. Check the stats. Except for Hall's six turnovers, BYU played a fine game. Again, congratulations, Utes.
Bummed out...for 30 mins max | 9:12 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Fun season...fun build-up to the game. Not the outcome I was hoping for. But unlike 25 years ago, I will only be bummed out for about 30 minutes (and not for 3 days or even a week like I would of in my college days).

Max tried a little too hard today...and hopefully learned a bit about emotion...control...acting vs. reacting. Already looking forward to next year.

I'm enjoying watch Cummard, Taverneri, and the rest of the basketball dominate Cal-Poly
Not even close! | 9:13 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Collie was prophetic and correct. Not even close.

Just think, 12 long months
52 very long weeeeeeeeks
365 painfully, lonely, desolate, frustrating days
until Utah will have a 2 game winning streak against the TDS.

Nicely done Utes.

I love the rivalry. How lucky we are to have two such great teams in Utah (and the MWC for that matter). Great job to both teams! Thanks for representing us with great class.
Southern Utah Tbirds fan... | 9:15 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Honestly, I cheer for BYU, Utah, and Utah St. But I will say, and I have attended all three stadiums many times that Utah fans are the worst fans in the state. Utah State fans are the second worst and BYU fans are the most respectful. And since Southern Utah has never hosted those three I can't comment on us. Just an honest take from a T-bird fan in Cedar City. Good luck to BYU and Utah in Bowl games.
Disappointed | 9:15 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I knew I should have gone to see "Twilight."
2008 versus 2004 | 9:15 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I wish Utah had played USC in 2004 for the national title and that they could have the Big East champion in 2008. Utah could have beaten anyone in the nation in 2004.

The '04 Utah team was the best ever to come out of the state, while this '08 Utah team is like the '84 BYU team that had some flaws and won some close ones. Lucky for BYU '84 they got a .500 Michigan team.

Good luck Utes against a top-five SEC or Big 12 team. There's still a chance to prove that the BYU '84 team is the third best in the history of college football in the state of Utah.
TucsonUte | 9:17 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I was surprised BYU didn't go to the ground game more but in a rivalry game you never know what is going on with the offensive coordinators.

It was worth the wait the Utes go BCS again and it is nice to see both schools with such great programs at the same time. There was a reason why BYU wanted Whittingham as a coach but Mendenhall was there for them and also was a good choice for BYU. Now if USU could only build a winning program.

Johnson may have had his moments this season but today he looked like the better QB. Hall's year will be next season.

Go Utes! Finish this season 13-0!
A classless courgar | 9:19 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I hate the utes. I hope they get beat in their bowl game. I will never cheer for the utes. Never, never, never, never. They are more classless than I am. I can't wait until next year when the cougars will rise up and kick the classless ywets butts.
Go cougars 2009 is our year.
Lehi Cougar Fan | 9:20 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
I was at the game and congratulate the Ute players for a good win. I do want to comment though on Utah's fans. I'm so glad that I'm a cougar fan and not associated with Utah. Not all of fans of course (including the couple next to me that was very nice) but overall I was shocked at how many fans were utterly vile, classless, vulgar, whatever you want to call it. I will never go back to a Utah sporting event at Rice Eccles. If I were a Ute fan, I would be embarassed.

Hank Paulson | 9:20 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
"We will not approve a bailout package for the BYU Cougars this year after their investment has gone belly up. We recommend thorough research into universities/companies before becocming "fully invested." Maybe they can look to the University of Utah for some financial support as they will be flush with cash after another trip to the BCS."
Marc Lyons Take Deux | 9:21 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
It was hilarious listening to Marc Lyons talk about how he perceived Utah was running up the score.

Uh, hello Marc and the rest of you bitter Cougar Honks, let's sit down for a little history lesson:

1991 - BYU 48, Utah 17
1989 - BYU 70 (that's right 70), Utah 31
1983 - BYU 55, Utah 7
1981 - BYU 56, Utah 28
1980 - BYU 56, Utah 6

Wear it and like it Cougars. What comes around goes around. It's just too bad UTEP isn't still in the league. Oh wait, the last time UTEP beat BYU, the BYU coaches accused UTEP of bugging the headsets.
ulusan | 9:22 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
AS a Polynesian BYU fan, my congrats to Utah for winning the MWC and a BCS berth. I can't slam Max for a bad game - it's unfortunate for us, but it happens - oh well... We had a good season, but this is Utah's year to celebrate as champs - I will cheer for them in the BCS bowl. Make the MWC proud - it's the only way we will get respect from the BCS empire. To the Poly Utes, you played well and I salute you! To all the seniors on both teams, congrats on a great college career and thank you for your spirit of competition in this rivalry. To those classless Ute and BYU fans on both sides of this blog, get real. You are what make our communities an embarrassment. Our schools have great programs moving in the right direction and our other MWC teams have done well vs non-conference teams. Don't tear it down by showing lack of class - grow up! Why don't you all work together so the rest of the country can see this rivalry on a real channel outside the region. A strong MWC - what a concept!
Hope OK scores more TD | 9:24 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
against TTU to drop TTU below Penn State and Utah.

With a few more upsets in the top 5, Utah may finish the regular season being ranked 5th in BCS.
re: Chester Cheater | 9:24 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Wow! Can you predict another Ute embarrassment next year? I think we need to be embarrassed next year as well!
Hey Kruegger - Max Hall Called.. | 9:24 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
And he wants his jock strap back. That was the funniest thing I have ever seen. 280 pounds jewking 180 pounds. Granted, he fell before the end zone - but that was flat out hilarious. Max Hall, you were exposed as the overrated QB you are. And Bronco, big mistake making the quest for perfection public. Keep it within the team - but making it the PR for the season was a bone head move. Utah - only team to break the BCS twice! I can hear the 1984 stories from BYU cronies already...
Cougs Lose | 9:26 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
