Disappointment awaits | 9:22 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Ute fans, step back and enjoy this win.

As a cougar fan I don't need to say "wait until next year" to see the Utes get disappointed.

Disappointment is right around the corner for the Utes--and I'm not even speaking about the outcome of their next game.

Disappointment begins on Dec 7th for the Utes when they find that, not unlike 2004, they will play a team barely ranked in the top 25--like Pitt. They will find that, no matter what they do, the BCS world will be unimpressed.

For the conference's sake, I can only hope they play a Big 12, or SEC team, because they won't be playing USC, or Penn State. ACC or Big East, here we come! Even worse would be Boise State!! Can you imagine the outrage?.....you won't have to, wait til Dec 7th.

I wanted to get on here and tell all Utah fans, congratulations. It was hard to tell who the better team was with how close games were for the both of us.

No excuses, you won and in an impressive fashion.

Represent the MWC well. Going to the BCS twice is an impressive feat.

Back and forth wins in the rivalry is what makes this rivalry so good.

Again, congratulations, I've swallowed my lumps, but luckily do not have my personal value hinged on the success of a football team like some other fans on here.

Go Utes! Bust the BCS again! Better the U than BSU.

From a long time BYU fan, Congratuations Utah! Excellent season.
Dave | 9:37 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I posted before the game yesterday that speed kills and that the Utes would win big. That is exactly what happened. Great game by the Utes on both sides of the ball.

By the way somebody tell Hall that Kruger is still open!!
Henry Drummond | 9:40 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I expected a closer game and more of a defensive game like TCU and Oregon State. I didn't think the score for either side would get out of the teens. I've been around long enough to remember the days when Utah beat BYU every year like clockwork and then it turned completely around with BYU beating Utah every year. This is a much better rivalry where it really is a great game. While I am a Utah fan through and through I think we should congratulate our cousins down south for a great season. I think its too bad that the system is set up that only one non-BCS team gets to go to a major bowl. Frankly our conference could send three. We certainly have more talent than anything in the Big East.

Recent History | 9:44 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Cougars have every right to hold on to their two very exciting wins late in the games of the previous two match-ups. Utes can still enjoy the four/four preceding games, all of which they won. Remember? Here are the scores: 41-34, 52-21, 3-0, and 13-6. So, of the past seven games, Utah has won five, twice with blowouts.

Both teams are very good this year, but Utah got better as the season progressed, and BYU isn't as strong as initially thought--a fact made clear by getting beaten soundly by TCU and the Utes. Hall's current skills are not good enough to succeed against very quick defensive backfields. But he's a great quarterback, and he'll be even better next year.

As for distant history, yes, BYU won a national championship two plus decades ago. Very cool. Utah won the NCAA hoops championship in 1944. And Washington beat the British.

"Once again the refs hand the game to Utah"

Yeah right cougar fan, and even your buds will look strange at you for that one. And last year you think the refs help UTAH? I think there are a bunch of cougars here that had dreams last night of an alternate reality.

Gotta love Bronco's comments. If this was in Provo and BYU won, the fans rushing the field would have been worse. Sad he's having to grasp for something.

No amount of BYU refs could have fixed Halls implosion.

"I think that without the turnovers it would have been a completely different game,"

Did BM really say that....laughable.

Without the 4 blow outs we the ride to Disneyland would have been different.

If it weren't for the fire the Hindenburg would have landed correctly.

Somebody give BM a personality injection. I think he is trying to be a LE Clone.

Did Whit say anything nutty or condescending? I don't think so.

Whit is the class of the MWC coaches. I'm glad we have him.

Texas-Ex | 10:05 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
If Texas doesn't make it to the BCS Championship Game, then The 'Horns will most likely play Utah in the Fiesta Bowl.

Unfortunately, Utah will not be selected to play in the BCS Championship Game. It's all about the money, and the Mountain West Conference is considered to be a minor conference.

We should all remember that no team has ever won a National Championship. Championships are mythical because of this. So, in my book, Utah has as much right to lay claim to the title as anyone else.

I'm also a Ute fan. My son graduated from the University of Utah, and I've paid a lot of money for the honor of being a Ute fan. Of course, graduating from Texas trumps the Ute, but not by much.

We need a playoff system.
Zeke | 10:06 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Game showed how over rated BYU was.
Ute Fan in Any Weather | 10:09 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
BYU bummer.

Another year that you can't run replays over and over again on Channel 11 and BYU-TV. A 10-2 year that will be ignored. That's sad. A real school would show its defeats along with its wins for years that were good. Well I guess you can alway rerun the Utah State game (just remember to cut out the fans yelling "over-rated")

Thank you for showing those Utah past loses - a true Ute fan loves it and I loved watching memories of years past. Nearly all BYU wins in the past decade were by luck and its clear in the replays - keep them coming - cause even when we lose we look good.
BSU fan | 10:15 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
As a BSU fan I just wanted to stop by and say congrats to the Utes.

I'd like to see a playoff between BSU and Utah for the BCS bid, but such is life.

I watched the game last night and thought that Utah looked pretty good, but not dominant. Considering the margin of victory was 24 points off 6 turnovers... The turnovers were more on Max Hall than effort by the Ute defense in my opinion. At any rate, Utes deserved to win and deserve a BCS bowl.

As a BCS system hater and fan of the mid-majors I really hope the Utes show up for the bowl game. Last year's Hawaii team was a good team, but they sure didn't show up against a very good Georgia team.

I have my doubts that Utah can hang with any of the top 10 except maybe BSU and PSU. Please prove me wrong.

Anonymous | 10:20 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Yup, and BYU plays its 1984 games on BYU TV all the time. Close games with teams with losing records. They would have clearly got their bell rung from Okl or Washington that year if they got a real bowl. I remember Lavell being really happy that they could stay in the Holiday bowl and play a Michigan team that they might be able to beat. You can thank the 1984 team for the creation of the BCS.
Chester Blue | 10:26 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Yes Chester is very blue today but I have to tip my hat to the Utes and be a good sport even though I wasn't one all the time last night. I've always respected Brian Johnson and I'm happy for him and the Utah boys who play on that team. There I said it but I still don't ever cheer for the Utes. BJ has had a tough go with injuries and now he's reaping the benefits of an injury-free season with the best Utah team (by far) since 2004. As for BYU, I hope we improve our secondary for next season and replace four excellent O-linemen which is tough. As far as Collie goes, he better stay because without him, a BCS run is doubtful. Chambers and Jacobsen will be here next year but Collie is the real deal and we need him for a shot as bad as we need a healthy Dennis Pitta, Harvey Unga and Max Hall. We'll get there Cougs! A true freshman LB in Manti Teo will give us what we need on defense, A MONSTER PLAYER!!!
Congrats to both Teams | 10:26 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Excellent seasons for both teams! Represent the MWC well Cougars! Lets get some more wins over auto-berth conferences.

12-0! Who could have seen this after the 2005 letdown? Hopefully we can keep some good coaches and continue to bring respect for our state, the conference and so-called "mid-majors" in general.
GO UTES!
Re: Disappointment Awaits | 10:29 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Another example of a classless Cougar fan. Why even post anything if that is the best you can come up with.

All I can say is we can't wait to see who we play and where we play. I'm guessing it's either Alambma or Florida in the Sugar Bowl.
Ownership! | 10:31 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
My Utes were just plain HUNGRY for this victory, and played an outstanding game on both sides of the ball!

Brian Johnson completed 30 of 36 passes, for 303 yards and 4 TDs! That's freakin' sick, man! Great game, BJ!

And I'm so proud of the ENTIRE Utah defense--they were all over Max Hall. Numerous batted balls, 5 interceptions, and a forced fumble. Amazing!

What a demonstration of strength, poise, and determination. I can't think of a better way to end the regular season than a resounding victory over that blue team from Provo. Bring on the BCS!!!
I wrote | 10:32 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I wrote early on Utes by 25. But they only won by 24. My hat is off to the Cougars, they did better than I thought they would.

I vote for seperation of religion and football. Are you listening Bronco? The best team won period. Good luck to BYU in their bowl game and thanks to their many classy fans who are the silent majority. Go Utah! in your BCS bowl game and congrats to you and your classy fans who can win with grace. For the boorish on both sides, thumbs down.

It is what it is. CRBURB 0829 hours says it all on 23 Nov.

All the bantering aside, CRBURB summed in up better than any post here or on ESPN. Check out his comment
Rob | 10:59 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I think we have to accept the fact that Max may be a good QB but he certainly is not a great QB. And although he may be a competitor he is not a gamer. In the two biggest games this year he has either given the game away (Utah) or been a no show (TCU).

As a BYU alum and super-fan, I am disappointed by the loss to Utah.

However, as is often the case, I am even more disappointed and embarrassed by the actions and statements of many of my fellow BYU fans. This year we lost and the Utes won. Period. Always falling back to the past (1984, etc.) to assuage current disappointment makes us look pathetic. I now live in Texas and you would never hear a U of Texas fan respond to the defeat of Texas by Texas Tech by citing the history of Texas domination over Texas Tech or throwing out the fact that Texas has won prior national championships. They live in the present here. Utah beat us this year. Deal with it in the present. I am really down because we lost but to respond to Utah fans by reminding them of old news is really weak.

We all should hope that BYU, Utah, TCU, Air Force and probably CSU do well in their bowl games. I would welcome a trip to the Poinsettia Bowl -- great city, great stadium and possible match-up with Boise State if the bowl brokers can arrange it.
It matters to them | 11:13 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
The fact is that beating BYU is a bigger deal to Utah than beating the Utes is to BYU. That is why Utah always brings their best game against us. BYU is the #1 target to every MWC team every year. BYU can't afford to target one team all year the way Utah does. That is also why BYU is the more consistent program over the past 40 years. Utah pops up every few years with a great team, but I would take 11 wins three straight years over a BCS bid once every five years with mediocre teams in between everyday. As a BYU fan I figured Utah had a better bunch this year and I was right. Big deal, they wil finish 12-1, we will be 11-2 and no one will care next year. How many conference titles does Utah have since BYU decided to care about football?? Not even close to the nearly 30 BYU has. BYU is still the better overall program year in and year out. BYU would have been in the BCS 4 or 5 times already if it existed in the past. In fact BYU is why there is a BCS.
Huskey Fan | 11:14 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Well Utah, his home is for sale and he way just in Seattle. Welcome Coach Whittingham, I hope you can return our program to its former glory.

BCS title game or not, Whittingham is one of the hottest coaches in the nation; he's 36-14 and has three bowl victories since being promoted from defensive coordinator to take over for Urban Meyer after the 2004 season. Will Whittingham bolt Salt Lake City? Meyer did after he led Utah to the Fiesta Bowl, leaving to coach Florida. Whittingham's tough style would work well at, say, Washington.
Little brothers | 11:16 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Congrats on pulling off the win. Don't get used to it. You will pop up every few years, but string together multiple championships and 10 win seasons and I will be impressed. Next year BYU will win 10+ again and Utah will be back to their typical ways of 7-5 seasons with beating BYU their only hope for redemption. I would rather lose to Utah and keep winning 10 games anyday. BYU still has a better overall program, bigger fanbase, and more national respect.
Max Meltdown | 11:36 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Max Hall singlehandedly lost this game. I don't know what happened to him; he's been a fairly solid QB. To blow it like that at any point next year tells me he's bound to be another John Beck or Alex Smith in the NFL - a bust. That is if he makes it into the NFL.

Good job to Utah, I didn't think they were that much better than BYU. But, they outplayed on every front last night, and Johnson really surprised me, he was outstanding.
National "REALITY" | 11:45 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
First of all congratulation to both the "FBS" formely DIV-1 teams on a another season too talk about. One thing every fan, whether it's a "Y" fan or a "U" fan seems to forget is that the only reason our conference gets any exposure in the polls is so the "POWER HUNGRY< MONEY HUNGRY" BCS commite can say see our system really does work. I'm not saying that either team is de4serving of the kudos but serously if we compare our conference to the -Big12 or even the SEC either team would be 500 at best. We should all be thankful that we have the national exposure with our two teams and hope for the best when it comes to a bowl game. It's a shame to me that the love foer the game is saturated by the poor sportsmanship that is posted all over this board. These guys played there hearts and gave us a great season. I just can't believe that some of the "y" fans are alreadt calling for Bronco's Head when. Have some empathy for the man.Could you do any better with the mess CROWTON left. Thanks for the post
Anonymous | 11:52 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I love having the BYU/UTAH game as the last game each season. Theoretically, it gives us a chance to see both teams play at their best. BYU's season ended with the loss to TCU. They underestimated and therefore underprepared for that game and it's affected play ever since. Utah had a great season with focus and drive in each game. Clearly, and I hate to say this because I'm a BYU fan, the better team won, as they deserved to. 1984 hasn't mattered in years, so get past it. I wish both teams luck and success in whatever post game bowl they play. (of course with everyone having a bowl game....)
Disappointed in Max | 11:56 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I was disappointed in Max last night--not only in the way he played but also in the way he lost his composure.

We have to accept the fact that he is an good QB; not a great QB. He may have a decedent arm but he is short, slow, fumbles alot and only an average decision maker. And although he may be a competitor he is not a gamer. He struggles under pressure. In the two biggest games of the year, he either gave the game away (Utah) or was a no show (TCU).

I realize that we want to keep our QB our icon and leader but he is not our strongest link; in fact, he may be our weakest (at least on offense).
rdha | 12:04 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Utah played great and Max Hall made regretable mistakes, so I felt bad for him. Also for Reed and Unga who got hurt. I hope that the U of U enjoy this victory this year and they deserve it. There's always next year for BYU Football and there's basketball to look froward to.

Fans? | 12:06 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I've attended all the games the past 25 plus years and to hear BYU fans slam Utah fans for being crude, etc. is funny. The Cougar idiots are as bad as the stupid Ute party crashers. I was in Provo when a Coug fan attacked a Utah cheerleader from behind. Top that. There's enough idiots on both sides so get off your Utah County high horse. I look forward to this game every year because of the level of ball being played. Now if BYU could put a leash on their late hitting, trash talking, cheap shotting, players. They are a direct reflection on their head coach.

Some idiot zoob wrote, "Why is it that almost every Ute post has to end with "GO Utes" Think of something original...."

You mean like "Harline is still open" or "4th and 18"?

By the way, Hall is still throwing picks.

were is the acountability that you talk about max hall 5 interseptions 1 fumble, and the ute difence never had to make a grate play to get any of them.when you lock up on the ricever from the snap and never look off something that is tought from little league on a good high school defence could read you.ive watched for two years now hopeing the coaches or yourself would catch on. you should have been replaced in this one and TCU you were out of it hope you learn for next year No hard feelings just fact.you need better mechanical QB skills.I have set in the endzone and watched open riciver after open recover and watched you force the ball. and i have also seen you make some grate plays you have the potential take responceability for the poor play. good luck next year.
Thank You For | 12:21 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Great season Utes!! I'm sure you have put in enomous amount of effort and preparations when nobody is watching you. I'm truely happy that you achieved what you set out for. It doesn't happen to everyone but you fought for it and you won it. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Go Utes!!!
Not Hall's Fault | 12:23 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I blame Mendenhall and Anae. Max was a victim of circumstance. Both coaches (and the rest of the conference) know that Max will throw to Collie 95% of the time. He won't even look at another receiver unless it is Pita, and he was hurt. So Anae shouldn't have put him in that situation time after time--ESPECIALLY WHEN UNGA WAS RUNNING IT DOWN UTAH'S THROATS!!!! HOW AS AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR DO YOU STOP DOING WHAT WORKS?!
And I blame Bronco's "bend but not break" defense. Cowboy up and stop giving a 10-15 yard cushion on every play! Cowboy up and blitz! Stop being so cautious and conservative that you allow any team who wants to to march down the field every possession.
So Hall was responsible for 6 turnovers, but the coaches should know better than to put him in a very predictable situation. Credit Utah for figuring out what everyone who has watched a BYU game this year knows--guard Collie. Heck, put 5 guys on Collie. Hall won't look at anyone else... just leave them uncovered.
Dave | 12:25 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
To our little brothers down south. It's time you realize we have bigger fish to fry in the BCS than targeting our game with you each year as some of you seem to think. You are just a bump in the road to the mighty Utes along our path to perfection.

Enjoy Las Vegas once again or wherever your path to mediocrity takes to you.

Congratulatiions to Utah. Better coached, greater
preparation, and by far more desire to win. They had much more to gain by winning and certainly everything to lose by losing. They played a near flawless game. Much more so when compared to how we played. I hope that they are rewarded by a good BCS bowl and will represent the Mountain West and Utah well. To what bowl game we might be invited to go I don't know. But I certainly hope that we will be better prepared than we were for this game.

re: Bama Cougar | 1:04 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I guess because you live in the South you consider yourself an expert-although I have probably watched more games of your beloved southern conference than you.

Florida is downright scary, I'll give you that, but Utah is no paper tiger like Hawaii. Hawaii had a weak defense and relied on their high powered offense to win games-which went virtually untested until they met Georgia. As others have mentioned, the Utes have rolled through 3 ranked opponents, and a MWC that is as strong as its ever been.

I guess it just kills you to think your team lost, boo-hoo, cling onto the delusion that the Utes are terrible. Utah can play with anyone and I'd pick them as a favorite over anyone right now except Florida & Oklahoma.
