Did the BYU fans posting on here forget to check the scoreboard?
'84 Champs | 11:54 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Exactly. And there is no way to know what would have happened because that game wasn't played. Instead, BYU played and defeated a not so good Michigan team to stay undefeated. Hence, the BCS is born and BYU will always carry an asterisk next their national championship. Every college sports fan in the nation knows it; the challenge is getting BYU fans to acknowledge it. Won't happen! Instead, they will continue to dig down deep in their bag of meaningless events and pull it out when they have nothing left to say.

24 years later...

BYU 24 UTAH 48

Just deal with it.

Congrats to the Utes in this game. The best game ever played ended like it should. Accept it BYU, any time you play us and we are both ranked, YOU LOSE!!!!

Congrats to Ute team | 11:55 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Congrats to the Ute players and coaches. It's extremely tough to go 12-0 and so hats off to you guys for putting together a phenomenal win and season.

As for the Ute fans, you have a long way to go. I was at the game and was wishing I didn't go after being cursed at multiple times, food thrown at me and my wife and other vile things that happened that I can't mention on this post. I wouldn't be posting this if I thought my experience was isolated to maybe one or two nutty fans, but it was not by any means isolated. I'm frankly emabarassed for my Ute friends that are always classy and the many other Ute fans that are gracious. I sat by two Ute fans that were really nice, so it's just too bad that the many other before mentioned fans have to ruin it.

Umm... we didn't play in the Armed Forces Bowl last year. We played in the Poinsettia Bowl against Navy. Air Force played in the Armed Forces Bowl against Cal.
jd | 11:59 p.m. Nov. 22, 2008
Just for the record, Kyle Whittingham was quoted as saying that the Utes decided to stay in pass coverage the entire game, so yes......obviously you were able to run the ball. But if we had played more run defense, you would not have been able to move the ball on Utah.
Sam | 12:00 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Congrats UTES. The DEFENSE gets the MVP nod. They did exactly what we knew they would... shut 'em down and turn them over. BJ was spectacular and composed through it all. A complete win! What next for an encore? BCS II "PROVING A POINT"
Definition of turnover | 12:02 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Regular Turnovers -Lightly baked triangle shaped dough pockets fillled with fruit, cheese, creme cheese, or other important fillings. These taste great compared to many other types of turnovers on the market. See below.

Max Hall Turnovers- Oblong shaped leather football with no topping but with visible seams, given up 6 seperate times on Rice-Eccles Field. These taste great for Utah fans, but they give excruciating heartburn and sometimes runny eyes to zoobie fans.

Get your Max Hall Turnover tray next year at any 6 of BYU road games. They are usually free. Milk makes them go down a bit better.
Re: Re: Hey BYU Fans.. | 12:03 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Utah won their game last year at the Armed Force Bowl, representing the MWC well as the third place team. Now it's BYU's turn to represent the conference as the third place team. Hopefully, BYU will have the same success.

Though it might be a good idea for Max Hall to attend some anger management therapy to limit some of those personal foul penalties.
Re: to hardcore ute fan | 12:04 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
That was not very nice..I met your wife and she is a very nice lady. Because of where I was sitting, I could only see the top of her head but she did not deserve to have anything "throwed" at her.

It is becoming clear that BYU's most glorious moments are the comeback wins against Utah. Gone are the days of BYU being a national power. BYU will always be a solid member of the conference and compete for conference championships, but the national spotlight has shifted to the University of Utah.

The Utes have shown that they can hang with the big boys. BYU? Not so much. Trying to beat Utah is now BYU's bowl game.
BCS? | 12:05 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
When you're undefeated, I honestly don't get what the excitement is about the BCS. Is it the money? What is it? It's a none title game. Nothing comes from it but money. As Universities and fans we have been purchased for lots of money. Sad. BYU and Utah are both going bowling, phht. Big deal. A bowl? This is a joke. College football is a joke. Think about it. The Utes are unbeaten with ZERO CHANCE AT A TITLE! Why are we not protesting? Why are we settling for this? Because Chris Hill is pocketing 10 million, that's why. We've sold a true playoff system for hard cash. We shouldn't be excited to bust the BCS. We should be screaming and demanding a playoff. Even worse is that Boise St. will be undefeated as well and they won't get a dime, while Utah gets 10 million. This whole thing is a fraud. Even worse than that, SDSU will get a million and Boise St. and Ball St. will get ZERO for going undefeated. Wake up people.
The_F | 12:05 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
BYU's motto next season should be: "The quest for redemption."
YBU? when you could be a UTE!? | 12:05 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
go utah! such an awesome game to be at, and get off your high horses BYW=U fans, ive seen much worse from you than what i did tonight, though it was funny watching all the BYU fans get escorted out of the muss by security with 5 minutes left because they were fighting WITH EACH OTHER, buch of morons, hope you like vegas, oh wait, you cant do anything fun down there anyway!
Props to Cougars | 12:05 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Harvey, Fui, Austin, O-Line and even our defense (which I thought played well enough to win): great game

Max - You've gotta learn to take care of the football. It's way better to throw the ball away or even get sacked and punt it away than try to force a third down conversion, resulting in a pick or fumble. Notice how often in the NFL they punt and the QB ends up throwing away the ball out of bounds. There's a reason!!! Turnovers = YOU LOSE, plain and simple. Don't get me wrong, we love you as our QB, but it's just so frustating! Anyhow, hopefully we can play BSU in a bowl game and you can redeem yourself and show everyone that you are one of the best QBs in the country.

RE: Welcome to the 21st Century | 12:10 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Your key line was the team with the most national exposure "NOW" is Utah. That is a no brainer as you are going to the BCS.

I travel 100% of the time for my job also and deal with executives of corporations who follow college sports and I have yet to hear a comment about the Utes until the last few weeks (AFTER BYU LOST TO TCU!!)

Boise State is much more recognized than the Utes as BCS busting.

P.S. How is Alex Smith doing? You know the QB from the BCS bowl in 2004.

Congrats to Utah from a Coug | 12:11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Congratulations Utes (from someone who normally sulks for days after a BYU loss). I wish the game had gone the other way but I hope you represent the Mountain West Conference well against whichever BCS bowl opponent you face.

It would be great if Boise State can be released from their WAC bowl tie-in so that a BYU-Boise State game can be arranged (even a TCU-Boise State game would be good).

Also, I agree with the previous comment about our #54. He really behaved like an idiot today and maybe shouldn't be allowed to play in this season's bowl game.
Sean Smith vs Austin Collie | 12:28 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
When sean smith was man on austin collie sean smith worked collie!
CliftonClyde | 12:29 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Great job by the Utes. Hopefully the powers-that-be in the BCS will give them an opportunity to play a top 5 team instead of a team from the ACC or Big East.

U Meyer is looking at ND if he goes Florida wants Coach W... He can't afford not to look at it. He just became a million dollar man. Nice win. See ya next year Cougars.

You have got to be worst loser on this board!! Your post is exactly why your school is the most hated program in Div 1. How about giving credit where credit is due!! You are a pathetic excuse for a fan and an embarrasment to your school!!

GO UTES!!!
Y are only National Champs | 1:10 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I'll take an asterik by my National Title over not having one at all.

And last I checked there was no asterik to speak of.

Have fun Utah watching Bama or Florida play Texas for the National Title this year.
BYU's DB's | 1:11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008

Brian Johnson was absolutely stellar tonight. 30 completions in 36 attempts, man! Thanks for one of the most memorable seasons in Utah history, Brian. And to the defense -- you guys rock 'em hard. GO UTES!!!!

All I can say is the Utes better win their bowl game.
12 and Oh | 1:33 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
For the classy cougs fans who congratulate the victor, I say thanks for being good sports. For those who think we will lose our BCS game or want us to, well, we're 7 and O in our bowl games and the last time we faced a BCS opponent we slaughtered them. We Utes win our bowl games.
Anonymous | 1:38 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Its funny that all the BYU fans are trashing Utes for being poor winners when all we hear is fourth and 18 or harline is still open. Even going to the airport when the Ute team comes home from playing oregan? Give me a break! But obviouly BYU fans don't ever do anything wrong. It isn't classless at all to get on and cry saying "I hope you get killed in the BCS" Real classy!
Anyway, great game. I was impressed how the BYU players lost with dignity and were respectful after the game. Too bad BYU fans here can't lose with any dignity and have to cry about the big mean sinful utes. If you want to read classless banter go to the sltrib message boards. Both sides are pretty nasty.
I am a Ute and I don't like utes fans being rude and disrepectful but BYU fans need to open their eyes and see the crap coming out of their own mouths. Both sides do and no one in innocent, even though Y fans think they are.
Re: Re: Welcome to 21st Century | 1:39 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Utah was the original BCS buster and now the first to repeat. The most recognized non-BCS program is in SLC. Deal with it.

To address your question regarding Alex Smith... He's doing fine. He is recovering nicely from a season ending injury. In case you didn't know, Alex was the first overall selection in the 2005 NFL draft. And is playing for one of the weaker teams in the NFL.

You may want to compare his numbers to those of Steve Young when he played at Tampa Bay, at the start his NFL career. Young didn't begin to excel until he played for a championship calibar team. He was very fortunate to have followed the great Joe Montana.

Smith's opportunity to shine is in front of him.

P.S. How are your former BCS quarterbacks doing? How about your former #1 overall draft picks?

Oh, I almost forgot... GO UTES!

Utah in BCS National Championship if:

ND beats USC
Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma, and
Texas A & M beats Texas
Anonymous | 1:41 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I really thought BYU fans were above the lame "running up the score, you are so classless" crap but I guess not. Implying we ran up the score is just confirming how bad our team is. If anyone saw the NAvy Notre dame game you know 3 minutes is enough to get three scores. The last TD just sealed the deal. Pretty lame even for BYU fans.
trigger1 | 1:52 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I know that it is an old " "Larry Kingish " type joke but, how many BYU players does it take to change a car tire ? Only one. But they ALL show up for a BLOW-OUT !!!!
Anonymous | 2:00 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Classic Cougar Complaints After Getting Beat:

1.) Your fans are classless, crude. (Welcome to the world outside of Provo, ever been to a Boston/New York game?)
2.) You are going to get obliterated in your Bowl game. (I can't see the future but I can sure enjoy the present.)
3.) We have a national title and cling to our storied run through the 80's.(That's impressive, which makes the current victory that much sweeter.)
4.) You didn't win the game we gave it to you. (Do I even need to comment?)

Thanks to all the sporting Y fans that realize they just got beat by a better team. For the rest of you out there making excuses, talking trash, whining, there is always next year. Thank goodness this year is ours!
LV Ute | 2:00 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
2008 BYU Football Theme: "The Quest for Perfection . . . . Just Kidding."

Better yet, how about "The Jest for Perfection."

Putting aside the cheap shot, both offensive lines were outstanding. Byu ran at will and Johnson dropped back 36 times and was barely touched.

And unless Austin Collie thinks playing on Sundays is not living right on the field, he will be playing for quite a while.

Now stick it to the so-called power conferences Utes and we'll be seeing BYU here again in another sellout.
SevierCountyCougFan | 2:14 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
As i read the 400 some comments i am almost falling off of my chair laughing. First off though, credit where its due. Congrats Utah for the win. No excuses.
I laugh though because you think you won because of your incredible play. What a joke. Max Hall did hand you guys that ball game and any BYU fan that says its unsportsmanlike to say it should take the blinders off. Also you UTE fans who say its a cop-out to say that Max handed it to you. Same advice.
As far as running up the score, anyone that complains about that has no sense of competition and absolutely no BCS knowledge. Anyone know why Oklahoma ran it up on Texas Tech, because it looks good to the BCS Gods!!!
Bronco Mendenhall is way more than a football coach and he knows what life is all about. Any man that can look him in the eye and tell him that his motivational strategies are bogus, is a liar!!!!
I am a die hard Cougar Fan. True blue through and through but even i realize the benefit to our conferance that comes with a UTE win tonight. Congrats to
Baylor Boy | 2:48 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
This was a fun game to watch.

Everyone is talking about the Utah victory being largely due to Max Hall's breakdowns without giving the Utah defense sufficient credit for causing them. Although the pressure on Hall superficially didn't seem that great at times, the variations on defense were amazing. To accomplish this, you need a smart defensive coordinator and also smart and versatile players. Utah's DC is as good as any in the Big-12 (which I follow because of my college roots). I would love to play on this defense; although, even in my best year, I would never have been fast enough for this team. Some might say the Utah defense didn't perform well because of the offensive yards it allowed BYU. Yards allowed can be one of the most misleading statistics in evaluating a defense's performance.

Regarding Collie: He is an excellent wide receiver and will play in the NFL. The smartest move he can make would be to declare for the draft this year rather than risk major injury during another college season (with a potential loss of millions of $). Anyone counseling him otherwise does not have his best interests in mind.
ND's real problem. | 2:59 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
to the 2nd commenter.... way up the line....

Notre Dame's problem isn't the coaches they've had. It is a paradigm shift in the type of ball players they can get into school.

first, the luster of going to ND is gone. Too many other teams out there on TV.
and
ND hasn't lowered their grade standards for athletes. It is a great academic school.
Why go to ND when you can go to another great football factory and major in 'eligibility' (heard this frmo Warren Sapp when he was asked about what he majored in at Miami. He was honest.)
Especially when you think your ticket is to the NFL and not the boardroom.
It's comments like this... | 3:07 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
"Win or lose, we still attend the better University, with a higher standard of morals and living.

See you all in Church tomorrow."

As a student at BYU- let me just apologize for this arrogant and ignorant comment made by one of my fellow students, who is still confusing football with religion. I hope his testimony wasn't hurt by BYU's loss.

And as a life-long Ute fan who saw it all in person- let me just say 12-0 baby!!!!! GO UTES!!!
Re: Re: Welcom to 21st cent | 3:11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Strange, when I was in the military most of the people I talked sports with knew a lot more about the Utes then the Cougs, but that was when they went to back to back final fours. Then later when they busted the BCS. I am sure I would of heard more mention of BYU if I was in when Detmer won the Heisman due to the national exposure. Outside of Utah these teams get little mention unless they have accomplished something that year.

The only Utah team that got mentioned a lot where the Jazz. I never realized how hated they are outside of Utah.
RE: Re: 84' Champs | 3:12 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
Fool, don't you get it. BYU beat the teams assigned to them... the same thing Utah did in '04.

Many Newties say don't live in the past, let me see, isn't '04 four years ago? Just last year you lost, the year before you lost. Next year you will be rebuilding, and will lose.

And we are yet to see if you will win in '08...
Just remember all this smack when the game is over in January. Remember Hawaii! I would rather see BSU against Utah, that would be an even match up.
Be consistent! | 3:43 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
RE: Welcome to the 21st century

People around the country are only being polite and when you say you are from Utah they realize UofU is from Utah. If the team was called Rocky U they would have no idea, just like most people have no idea where Notre Dame plays its home games and they are a national icon.

RE: '84 Champs, What asterisk do you mean? There is no asterisk after BYU's NC... where do you see that?

So Newt fans don't accept BYU's NC because it was 24 years ago, well, try to tell Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, Miami, and USC to take down their NC banners, or any sport for that matter. An NC is always and NC, and congratulations Utah, you are the MWC champs this year, for what it is worth.
Hey Urban, get ready! | 4:23 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I am just happy that I dont have to hear BYU's anouncer from last years game scream "touchdown, touchdown, touchdown!" on KSL any longer. When Utah wins they don't have a big radio station that makes all you BYU fans have to relive that horrible moment over and over and over! That was painful!
I don't really understand why everyone keeps calling eachother classless here. Its a game. The rivalry makes it fun. Don't let the antics that make it fun, be personal. Its not persicution its sports.
Oh yea, GO UTES! haha
Scott | 4:58 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
I told you so.... BYU is, was overated. Air Force would have beat BYU also IF they had not dropped 3 easy interceptions....

Utes Rule. BYU CHOKES!!!
NV Coug | 5:17 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
The Utes won and were the best team in the MWC. I hope they get a decent matchup in the bowl they play in to show their worth. No sense in dwelling on the past, the game is over and the Ute fans can whoop it up all this next year. As a Cougar fan, I am looking forward to next year when the Utes go from first to almost worst, at least they will have SDSU and WYO at home, hopefully their only two wins for the season.
Bitter Coug Fan | 5:29 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
The Utes deserve their moment in the sun. Max Hall needs to take a long look at how he gets things done under pressure. He will get a chance to redeem himself next year. There is always next year to look forward to. The Utes will get a chance to see how it feels to live up to expectations. All they can do is go undefeated next year, won't happen.
Bob from Virginia | 5:30 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
As a BYU Alum, I am disappointed. But with deep Utah roots, and knowing how most of the country thinks about the "hicks" in Utah and the mountain west in general, I wish U of U the best of luck in the BCS. Hopefully the Utes will show them we can compete with the likes of Texas or USC.
BYU FAN | 5:50 a.m. Nov. 23, 2008
TWO THINGS:Why were we in a prevent defense the entire lst quarter? Why did they let Blaine Fowler call a BYU game? He started whining about the defense being on the field to long in the first quarter. And, it was the offense's fault. Maybe if the prevent defense could have gotten a stop the offense could get on the field! I don't think giving up 20 first downs in the 1st half is the offenses fault. Bronco needs to hire a defensive coach.
