Ed, I strongly agree, the following says it all; "It's gratifying that the Utah Symphony has dusted it off and offered it this weekend as a welcome alternative to the endless repetition of the standard violin concerto fare that the symphony plays".

Sarah Smith

Years ago when I took my violin-playing son, then in high school, to Utah Symphony concerts, we could easily see the virtuoso of Ralph Matsons playing. Eventually we came to say fondly when we would see him on stage, Theres Ralph, like we knew him personally.

I, too, agree with the reviewer. Matson's performance of the Britten concerto simply dazzled. When he was finished, I was a little disappointed that not everyone stood, as Utah Symphony audiences are apt to do. Possibly because the concerto wasn't a regular. For those shouting Bravo along with me, we knew he had performed masterfully a difficult piece that ran the gamut of double-stops to steep notes on the E string to intricate bowing and pizzicato.

Since moving to SLC from Utah County, I try to go to every Matson concerto performance. Utah is fortunate to have him.
