Don't confuse what would have happened with BYU in 1984 to what will happen if Utah plays Florida this year.
If it didn't mean conceding Saturday's game, I'd thoroughly enjoy watching the Utes get their's against Golden Boy Urban.
Anybody else notice how Urban basically said he was no longer in favor of a playoff system that would allow non-=BCS teams like Utah in?
Yeah, you Ute sheep should be really proud of Urban and Bernie Machen. They've really got your backs.
Are you sure no one rushed the field after the Weber State game -- to thank Ron McBride for putting up so many points against an "SEC-speed-quality defense"?
I heard the rushed the field to thank McBride for getting fired so they could bring Urban in and win two league championships with Ronnie Mac's recruits.
If the next person who responds to this thread calls himself: To Show How Much You Mean to Me, I'm going to start screaming -- Saturday's game is "Urgent, urgent ... emergency!"
Mmm let me see 2004 Fiesta comes to mind: Frist non-BCS team to break the BCS monopoly.
While Utah wants to count BCS games
While SEC, PAC-10, Big-10, Big-12 count national titles.
Georgia Tech is taking Miami to the woodshed. 41-10 early 4th. The ACC is cannibalizing itself & the picture remains murky. As long as Fla St, BC, or Va Tech don't represent, I'll be fine.
As for the PAC-10, if Oregon St wins out, would the Rose Bowl really want a Penn St/Ore st rematch?
FYI zoobie: I was comparing the BCS monopoly as the reason why a non-BCS team will ever get a shot at the title and you come back with basketball? Please stick to comparing apples to apples.
And as far as Miami and OK pre and post-BCS national titles go... correct me if I am wrong but are they not part of the BCS conferences?
Can you zoobies name the first and only team in history to break the original BCS-monopoly? I will give you a hint it happened in 2004.
I am not taking anything away from the Y but the 84-Y team would never be ranked #1 in this post-BCS era with their strength of schedule. So don't pound your chests over '84 while downplaying 2004.
Good call!
BYU where history is subjectively spun; The U where history is made.
I guess that eliminates all of the whining about Austin Collies comments about how bYU won the game this year.
BYU's championship in 1984
1. Was because all other teams had lost at least one game
2. IS the reason we have the BCS today
3. Wasn't a national championship game because Michigan (6-5) would not have been national champs if they had won...which they almost did
BYU's national championship has a BIG ASTERISK to go along with it. It was no national championship game.
Let's GO UTES!!!
BYU has never done anything that would provide revenue to another school (reference Utah 2004 BCS team and BYU taking their share in the charity line).
In fact, BYU has never done ANYTHING for ANYBODY...period.
I suppose the inference of your post is that BYU doesn't talk about what they are going to do. Well, I would argue that your own coach does enough of that for the entire "cougar nation." Remember the "Quest for Perfection" campaign? Also, this board is full of BYU fans predicting what is going to happen on Saturday.
Oops, BYU rules only apply to others. I had forgotten and I apologize. My bad.
sorry to say it, but the only reason Utah is in a conference that has any respect is because BYU gained national recognition. Where was UTAH all those years BYU dominated the conference?
Yes congratulation on being the first to break the BSC.. but don't forget the schools that paid the price to get you there.. When does a bowl tell a school they wont be going to the game before the season is even over.. Answer.. the first year a school was trying to break into the BCS.. who was that school? BYU. In today system.. the BCS isn't playing the mind games it did back then.. if it was UTAH would not be going to a BCS and it wouldn't have gone in 2004..
so remember those who made your success possible.
As for the B Ball. Boise barely pulled off a victory on a very bad night for BYU. If BYU played them 10 times that year BYU would have won 7.
I will agree that Boise is a solid program, but don't go thinking they are clearly better than BYU!
"sorry to say it, but the only reason Utah is in a conference that has any respect is because BYU gained national recognition. Where was UTAH all those years BYU dominated the conference?"
We were carrying your doormat of a basketball program.
"Carrying the basketball program" I will give you that one.. thanks for agreeing with me on the football.
What's even sadder is that Utah fans have bought, hook line and sinker, the BCS line that the computers provide of fair assessment of the strength of each team.
Any ranking system that sees no difference between a one-point win and a 50-point blowout is inherently flawed. Utah fans would see what a farce the BCS ranking system is if they weren't so blinded by their attempts to prove that a BCS invite is superior to a national championship.
Just ask USC how fair the BCS ranking system was when they finished the regular season ranked first in the AP and Coaches polls, but were denied a spot in the BCS "championship" game.
The AP voters, not bound contractually to award the championship to one of the teams that the computers selected, chose instead to award their national championship to the team they thought most deserving, USC.
A BCS bid will never be equal, much less better, than a national championship.
Someday, if they ever win one, Utah fans will understand that.
So win or lose against Utah, BYU will be in a bowl somewhere and that is an accomplishment in it self. Many teams would like to go to "any bowl" on any year, unlike the Y that goes pretty much every year.
Good luck to both teams, and enjoy whichever bowl your playing in. We will enjoy watching you. Thanks for a great season.
Bogut is a real rip snorter too, huh? I've been watching for your two #1 boys in the Pro-Bowl and All Star games. Did I miss something???
Jealous of BYU? Don't make me throw up! BCS is a joke. So you are saying it is harder to win a title if people pick up over a computer (i.e 84)... well I'm saying the 84 team which beat no ranked team would never be in the title game under the BCS system.
GO COUGARS
How's the Ute basketball team? How many times has Utah beat Byu in the past 2 years?
This is about football, not hip hop, lame basketball, NOBODY CARES
Thank you come again.
All in fun but that's a little much.
That is because we cannot get it here any other way and BYU is awesome. It will be on Channel 9403 but they haven't determined what time it will air yet. I hope live but they said that it will show up on the guide tomorrow around noon. So there is hope for some of us, to still see this game. (The reality is that we wouldn't even get to see the highlights on espn otherwise
Go BYU, Go Dish Network. Go BYU TV!!!!
1. Been shut out by a hapless UNLV team.
2. Tried an onside kick when ahead of an opponent by more than 40 points late in the third quarter.
3. Tried to recover said onside kick before it traveled the required 10 yards.
4. Resorted to a gimmick of having everyone wear black. (wooooo, scary)
5. Drop 9 men into pass coverage on the final play of a game, yet somehow, inexplicably, leave the other team's top receiver uncovered.
6. Use all that SEC-quality speed on defense to forget the cardinal rule of letting the other team's best receiver get behind you on 4th-and-18.
7. Have your coach give a one-armed salute when he wins his first game in your stadium.
8. Have your fans get Tazered at a real stadium after being pre-conditioned by Rice-Eccles Security to rush the field after every mediocre victory.
9. Claim to invent cold fusion.
10. Allow your QB to play in a bowl game after he was accused of treating a women in a bar like his center.
Plenty more, but word limit is up!
Played in the Fiesta Bowl. (Congrats on that! It's the one legitimate thing you can hang your helmets on.)
Played in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Played in the Emerald Bowl.
Played in the Poinsettia Bowl.
And here's hoping you add one more to the list after BYU beats you Saturday and jumps Boise State into the BCS ... play in the Las Vegas Bowl AS A LEAGUE CHAMPION (or in this case co-champion).
I wish you all the luck on that -- truly I do.
byu's quest for perfection is down the drain
utah 24
byu 16
We're looking forward to hosting you again.
Luckily we pick ahead of the Armed Forces Bowl.
And Ty Detmer was a scrub too. Go figure!?

Realisticly, you had to know Urban's tenure on the hill would be short. I doubt Ute fans give 2 hoots about Meyer's change of heart.
Does Crowton still have the Y's best interest at heart? I'd bet its still troubling to the fans of TDS to see Crowton win a NC so soon after being canned still by the Y.
If Bronco's goal is to get the best LDS athletes how did he not get Andrew Hatch to transfer from the original Harvard to the Harvard of the west I mean BYU. Instead, he ends up in Baton Rogue.
Besides, BYU showed Crowton what's what when they trounced Oregon.
BYU fans hold no ill will toward Crowton. He just couldn't get the job done here as the head coach. But he's a great offensive coordinator.
BYU has shown on several occasions since getting whooped by TCU, that they do not have the defensive speed that is required to keep up with the Utes or TCU.
Instead of going for perfection, go schedule some games with the Big Ten or Big 12, and see how you fare against them. I would be paying money to see the Y go to Iowa or Wisconsin. How about the Y going to play Oklahoma, Texas, Ok. State, Texas Tech or Missouri?

"You are correct, under BCS rules, the Y would have played in the championship game in 84... and would have been beaten like a rug. (Think Hawaii v. Georgia last year.)"
Nice comment, Einstein. Back away from the Red Kool-Aid and sip a dose of reality.
The only other two teams vying for the title at the end of 1984 were Oklahoma and Washington. Washington beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. (Ergo, Oklahoma is out of the discussion.)
Early the next year, BYU beat Washington, how did you describe it, oh, yeah, "like a rug" like 31-3 or something like that. I suppose the Cougs did look a little overmatched. Another 10 points on their lead and they could have tried an onside kick.
Now, I know that was the next year, so there's no way of knowing what would have happened at the end of the year before. But to insinuate that BYU would have been beaten like Hawaii was -- well, that's just idiotic.
Using your same logic, any non-BCS team playing a BCS team should get drilled in a bowl. Geez, your own school proved otherwise.
Get a clue.
