Jeff,

I think you should have done a little more research on this statement: "nearly equaling the success of J.K. Rowling's blockbuster "Harry Potter" series."

Twilight has sold less than SIX percent of the raw number of volumes of the Harry Potter series worldwide, and a similar ratio in the U.S.

Even if you correct for the three more HP volumes, you can only get to about EIGHT percent of the HP numbers. Its not even in the same ballpark.
Fact check!! | 1:12 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
Please stop comparing the sales of the Twilight Saga to that of the Harry Potter series. According to the BBC, as of October 2008 Harry Potter has sold nearly 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages.
Publisher Weekly states that the Twilight Saga has sold 17 million copies in 37 countries and has been translated into 20 languages.
This is no doubt an amazing feat, but the truth is Twilight has not and will never compete with the Harry Potter book sales. Total revenue from the movies may come close, but HP will not be out done by Twilight.
Sorry folks, and congratulations Stephenie Meyer!

Can't Read - Apparently | 2:34 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
No wonder SLC gal thinks the article is only talking about the movie, apparently she can't read...

"Stores around the world have sold millions of copies of LDS author Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" BOOKS nearly equaling the success of J.K. Rowling's blockbuster "Harry Potter" series"

Such a poorly written article. The reporter (and newspaper) should be ashamed.
Vampires? | 3:05 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
What is so great about vampire love stories anyway!
Get over it | 3:09 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
The Twilight series is stupid! Harry Potter was merely okay. Let's get over them. They aren't worth the time or effort.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that most bloggers need serious counseling to deal with their inner vicious child. Can anyone say anything nice any more?
soakblue | 3:35 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
Um, she's not an LDS author. She's an author who happens to be LDS. HUGE difference, DNews.

Apparently they can't.

.My kids learned to Read Very Well on Harry Potter and the movies are fun. They where worth our time because my kids where inspired (not forced) to read. The Potter Books got Read and put away or loaned and not returned etc. However the Reading for enjoyment continues. That as well a Scriptures produced good readers.

If you can Read you can always get by, it you cannot your dead from the start.

Bad spelling and bad reading are vastly two different subjects one is workable learning disability, (thank you Mr. Gates and Mr. Allen). The other you either can do it or you cannot. If you cannot you depend on the pretty pictures.

I do that often when I go to the full service Asian Supermarket. Mostly because the Fish are still twisting but I have developed strange tastes over the years and Asian Supermarkets are the only place to get certain items.

My daughter reads Japanese Anime Books which are in English but still read Back to Front.

She had High School Grad reading skills in 7th Grade, which helped her with her other issues so she finished High School 1 year ahead, in the Pack

I am sooo excited for twilight to come out! I've read all the books, and they are amazing!!

Mr. Vice needs to check his facts...the movie premieres not TONIGHT at midnight, but TOMORROW (Thursday) at midnight. Technically 12:01 a.m. on Friday. If you're confused check the countdown timer on twilightthemovie website.
Confused | 4:44 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
How can Stephenie Meyer get away with being LDS and also write the "twilight" series? They do not go along with LDS beliefs....
More fact check | 4:46 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
Comparing the Twilight BOOK to the Harry Potter SERIES is more than a bit misleading. Harry Potter sold a lot more, but consider the following facts:

- There are 7 books in the HP SERIES, there is only 1 Twilight BOOK. So you'd expect 1 book to sell fewer copies than 7 other books.

- HP has been out a lot longer.

At this point it's an apples to oranges comparison.
Anonymous | 5:44 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
don't compare the two unless you've read them both. i have...i still like harry potter better.
RE: More fact check | 6:25 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
Please check the numbers again - the Twilight SAGA (all 4 books) are being compared to the Harry Potter SERIES (all 7 books). Bottom line is this:

Twilight sales to date - roughly 17 million copies
Harry Potter sales to date - roughly 400 million copies
Harry Potter #7 alone: Amazon.com reported a sales of 15 million copies within 1 hour of being available - thats a 1:4 comparison, and Twilight is barely coming out ahead. No matter how long the Twilight series is available for sale it will never topple the sales of the HP series.

I say congratulations to Ms Meyer! She has achieved what few authors have, she has a full 4-book series that is wildly popular. I wish people would stop comparing her sales to J.K. Rowling, there is NO COMPETITION!! I am not talking about content, lord knows I don't care about either series.

I wish there was a "fact-check" button next to the "spell-check" button...

Confused, have you even read them? I suspect you're just one of those commenters who likes to troll, but I'll take your bait anyway because you're not the first to say it.

What exactly about this "squeaky clean" (with the exception of a rare cuss word) supernatural drama/romance is against LDS beliefs? Last I checked, no one's been excommunicated for reading them.

Are there a lot of better, more enlightened books people could be reading? Probably, but you have to make a little room for fun now and again.

Re: Confused comment

Your funny! Ms Meyer is LDS because she chose to be baptized at some point in her life. She wrote the Twilight series because she has an imagination and wanted to write a fictional story about fictional vampires and werewolves. She wrote about non-LDS characters and non-LDS vampires because she knew they would not fit in with LDS beliefs.

She can 'get away' with it because like any human being or LDS member she can choose to write what she wants. Just because someone is LDS they are not required to write only LDS fiction.
Annoyed | 7:24 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
All,

Being LDS and writing fictional books about vampires have nothing to do with each other. If Stephanie Meyer were to write something that is against church doctrine then there would be something. I read all 4 books and enjoyed them. There was nothing wrong. The fact that she described Edward as wanting to save himself for marriage is something of itself and is perfectly in line with church teachings. If you read all 4 books that is what happened. As for the comparison between Rowling and Meyers... I think people need to get a life and enjoy both authors as being gifted and creating outstanding books for all ages to read.
Jane | 7:31 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
She should write LDS books. Why does she write to the masses. We need good writers like her to write on LDS topics and cater to her faith.
hey | 8:35 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
i'm writing a book on vampires attacking washington, oops already done!
this is not cool | 9:11 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
hi
IM sorry but LDS dont have to folow the lines at all but mostly we do, and when you are writing an book you dont have to follow the way you worship. Come one get real

I've realized something from reading these comment boards. There is nothing anyone can do that SOMEONE will not complain about, be it good, bad, or somewhere in between. What is wrong with all of you?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL OF YOU?!!!!! Are you never satisfied?!

Um... That's Weird... | 10:26 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
... a blood drive in connection with the Twilight movie! Strange stuff indeed.
on the funny side | 10:31 p.m. Nov. 19, 2008
I had to chuckle when I read that the cinemas and theatres are hosting events such as "blood drives" for Twilight. Too funny.

Say what you will.

She's now RICHER than any of us.
Isn't it Great? | 9:11 a.m. Nov. 20, 2008
Isn't it absolutely amazing and wonderful that we live in a place where Ms. Meyer can believe whatever she chooses AND write whatever she wants? With TOTAL freedom; that's awesome! And it's what this whole life is about - choosing for ourselves.
