Best of luck to Hurricane this week. You were a classy team that was better then we were. I hope you guys beat up on JD this week and we can meet up with you next year again at Rice. Only suggestion, coaches, leave your visors at home. Your coming to northern Utah, and it's November... not time to wear a visor!

Good Luck Hurricane!!! I cant wait to see you play on friday!!!

powerhouse? | 7:43 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane is about the same as its always been, the difference is their bot member getting the St George schools bumped up to 4A,it helps getting your main competition eliminated.

Been where you were last year with community support. So happy to see your program succeed. You have worked hard, stuck with what was right and continued to lead and look where the program is heading. Great to see the Des News cover such a topic and you handle it so well. Go get another championship for the community and lets allow the naysayers have an opportunity to wake up and join in supporting what is being created in Hurricane.
go get'm coach.....

Re powerhouse? 7:43

yes it does help to have dixie, snow canyon and pine view 4A during region but... Hurricane beat snow canyon and would have beat dixie... so that is just proof that it wouldnt have changed anything this season... but how would that help during the playoffs anyway?? the playoffs is when everybody realized that hurricane is the real deal...

Hurricane has a very talented team this year and will continue to dominate for years to come... so get used to it...

how about you stop being a hater and just support the boys....
just wondering | 8:22 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Why would anyone want to be the Skyline of 3A? Yeah they have state titles but nobody respects them. I guess I just don't see why coach H would want his team to be synonymous with the talent stealers like TV and Skyline. Sigh...
Tiger Power | 8:23 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
You guys are amazing. It has been OK for Hurricane to be playing these schools for years that are twice their size, but when the UHSAA finally finds a solution to put them in the class they belong its Hurricane's fault. And above everything else you act like Hurricane can't beat the big three, wrong. The St. George schools now get a taste of what Hurricane has had to deal with for years. Coach Homer and his staff are amazing coaches and men, and they are on the verge of great things. The Tiger pipeline is full of great kids coming through. Good luck Friday, these boys and coaches deserve all good things. Go take it! GO TIGERS!!!!!
GO TIGERS!!!! | 8:47 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane has an incredible group of guys that just strap it on and go to work. But, I think the most overlooked player has been Justin Edwards. J Ed is the anchor and the glue to the awesome Tiger, wing T, powerful offense. He is a positive leader that never ever walks to the ball. He will be holding the gold trophy high above his head on Friday. This group of guys will prove true that in the scheme of things, TIGERS STARVE LAST!! GO TIGERS!!
3A Football Coach | 8:57 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Their one lose was to Pine View In overtime. A 3A power? How can anyone say anthing different. Did Pine View lose in the Quarterfinals of the 4A State tournament, by 5, to a program considered to be one of the best in the state?

Excellent job, and good luck on Friday. I am sure that thier are more with you than against you!!
Fan | 8:57 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
What a class act Coach Homer is!!!! You people in Hurrican should be patting coach Homer on the back rather than asking for his head in a down year. the only way you build a program is increase your support in a down year. Grow up!!!! You just dont realize how tough it is to compete with a school with a couple hundred more kids than you and Hurrican did just fine this year against DHS, PV & SC. One thing you havent thought of is with his success Coach Homer is probably being courted by some of the other bigger schools and when he is gone you will wish he was back. Good luck Hurricane. Bring home a championship.
re: Fan | 9:37 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane did not play Dixie this year... just an FYI. Know the facts before you report.
Juan Diego | 10:23 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane beats all those weak teams from the south so now they think that they are a 3-A power house????? I don't think they stand a chance against juan diego. GO JUAN DIEGO!!!!!!
re girl | 11:28 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Funny how when you just say the truth its hating.Don't be so sensitive, the Hurricane team is a good team and good luck at state.
Tougher Schedule? | 11:38 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
The combined record for all the teams that Juan Diego has played is 57-90.

The combined record for all the teams that Hurricane has played is 77-70.

Is there any argument to which team played the tougher schedule?
Big Pepsi jr | 11:54 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
JD only played 3 teams that ended the year with winning records, 2 of those came in the playoffs(PC, Logan, and Delta). No doubt Hurricane played a tougher schedule. It's not even an argument.
beat dixie? | 12:06 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
yeah right?!
google | 12:08 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
to the person who put that hurricane beat all those weak teams from the south i got some news for them, pine view, snow canyon, dixie those teams are some of the best for 4a and they were really good in the 3a. besides juan diego couldent stand up too them but hurricane has a lot of times so i have a feeling that juan diego is going to get killed... how did you do with the pv game? WE HELD TO DOUBLE OVER TIME!

To Tiger Power:
I am a PV fan but want to wish the Tigers luck against JD. I believe that the Tigers will win. I watched them play PV and what a game. However, please don't say that PV is twice the size of Hurricane. There is less than 100 students difference and PV is now landlocked without any room for growth, whereas, Hurricane, SC, DHS, and Desert Hills have all of the growth. I would say that Hurricane will have more students in 2009-2010 than Dixie or PV. I get my figures from the USHSAA and the public school records. Anyway I think there is some great football played down here. Go Tigers
lol | 1:25 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane will hold there own, they have all year just like JD. I am guessing the first half will be a bit boring. But the second half is when the show begins. Good luck both teams, its played on the field not here, stats mean nothing now you are here showem what you go. TIGERS
H*town alum | 2:22 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
To Juan Diego. Hurricane beats "all the weak teams from south"??? This year they beat both Nevada and Arizona 3A defending Champs. That while going through a rough region schedule year in and year out with the St. George Schools. Region 9 is the SEC of Highschool Football. The region of Champions!!!
Giving Credit | 2:24 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Not to bash on the Hurricane coach because he obviously has the program going in the right direction, but according to this article, it sounds like he's reached his goal and isn't as focused on winning this game as he was the others
To H Town | 2:29 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
To say region 9 is the SEC of Utah prep football is a stretch, holy cow! How many titles has region 9 won?

That said, Hurricane better lay the smack down on JD Friday!!
to southern | 2:43 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Your numbers are good today now that Deseret Hills is open , but I'm referring to the last 10 years. take that into account, any more argument. 10+ years of almost half the size!! GO TIGERS!!!!
H*town alum | 2:44 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
"Giving Credit" I had the honor of playing for Coach Homer '00-'02. I can tell you that while the article might be misinterpreted, Coach Homer knows what his goal is. And It's not to make it to a State semi-final game. I assure you that Coach Homer and his staff have the mentality that anything short of a championship this year, would be a failure. He knew he would be playing this game before the season started. They aren't going to settle for anything less than to bring the championship back down south. Good luck Coach Homer! Fight on Tigers!!!
football fan | 2:53 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hurricane deserves this game! THey have worked hard all season and they worked hard in every game.... they lost to Pine View in double overtime! DOUBLE OVERTIME!!! THat is quite an accomplishment!! GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
re to southern | 4:09 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Please don't exaggerate your numbers to make your point,PV has never had double the numbers of Hurricane, all the schools have been within about 200 students one way or another through the years, Hurricane didn't have a problem with beating up on Desert Hills this year,DH had about 700 students and almost no seniors since seniors we able to stay at PV and Dixie so you had them by about 200,no problem right? If you want to get even for some injustice you think was done to you in past years forget it.Were talking about whats best for ALL the kids not just you and your vengeance, get a clue.
Congratulations | 4:21 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Coach Homer and staff, Nice job again this season with your team. I hope you guys bring home the state championship! I believe you will. Keep up the great work that you are doing with those young men. Chris Cannon
wambat | 5:34 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Coach Homer knows, Roy Hoyt knows, and the district leaders know that the petition had nothing to do with their win loss record. It had everything to do with the way they have treated the boys, their foul mouths and crass behavior in the past. The team is much better both on and off the field thanks to Homers efforts. I am sure that the discipline they received from the district for the things that were going on had something to do with the change but I really dont care, I am just glad that they have made the positive change they have. I have it on "pretty good" information that the petition was about the frequent use of vulgar and profane language, poor sportsmanship by the coaching staff ie. (Snow Canyon fight), and other non-football related issues. It was strictly a moral issue. We love Hurricane High and all the kids and teachers. We wanted change and we got it. Thanks Coach Homer for your efforts.
tigerplayer | 6:11 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Why do people look for excuses in numbers? Yeah, it makes a difference but the enrollment has been so close that it shouldn't matter. Our team doesn't want to make excuses so why are some of you parents. If anything the competition is good for us. We're all the same age.
j ed | 6:13 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008

RE: wambat | 6:16 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Coach Homer and all his coaching staff are some of the best men that I know. None of those things in the petition were even true. You know nothing about our coaching staff. Our coaching staff has always been and will continue to be classy. They always treat us with respect, rarely swear, and they have never behaved crassly. Unless you go to practice with the coaching staff everyday, you know nothing of what goes on. I love our coaching staff and would not have continued playing for four years had any of those things really been going on. Our coaching staff has never had any moral issues. I have a high respect for our coaching staff now, and I will continue to have a high respect for them for the rest of my life. I know they respect us(the players) as well.
Tiger Town | 7:27 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
I totally agree with "RE: wambat". We have the classy and most respectful coaches in the state. I love our coaches and everything they have done and will do. And just like he said i am about to finish my 3rd year playing for Coach Homer and i am planning on playing for him again next year. And two points: 1- We did not start the so called "Snow Canyon Fight" they did by running up the score! and 2- the only reason the petition started was because a bunch of angry dads were pissed at the coaches because there sons didn't play because the were bad athletes. But of course, they don't think that so they were i guess you could say "getting revenge" on Coach Homer and accusing him of things EVERY COACH IN THE STATE DOES! I love the coaches and all of my teammates! Let's Take STATE!
Thank you | 7:48 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
To the DesNews: Thank you for giving credit and acknowledgement to Coach Homer and his staff. It has been a remarkable and enjoyable year. One more win and we can get that big gorilla off our backs!

Kudos to the PV fans who have blogged giving praise to Hurricane on their season. That PV/Hurricane game was a classic!

Why is it that only the Dixie fans seem to make the negative comments about Hurricane? Your season was a good one. You did well in the playoffs. You simply got beat in a close game at Mt. Crest. No shame in that loss--yet being out of the limelight seems to make some Flyer fans envious. Ridiculous.
Tiger #24 | 7:54 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
As a player, i have been under coach Homer for four years. He is one of the best and classiest coaches i have played for, he treats us with respect and for the last four years i have played for him i have never heard him use disrespectful, vulgar, or crass behavior in any way to his players. I respect him and would do anything for him under any circumstance. Its sad to see freshman parents who think their kid is an all-star quarterback and want coach out so we can run the spread. I am very glad most of the town rallied around coach Homer or else we would not be where we are right now.
Tiger Army | 7:55 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
It has been very gratifying to watch Hurricane students savor each victory this year. I have not seen any gloating or self-adoration. This team seems to understand that victories come from hard work, dedication, discipline, avoiding key injuries, and having the ball bounce just the right way sometimes. This team understands that the difference from the last two years to this has been keeping focused on the target and believing in the ideal of "team first" and "individual last."

They appreciate how fleeting success can be and find joy in the reward of their hard work.

Congratulations! Keep it up and you can make history.

Hey check it out everyone...no matter who wins Friday's champioinship game, Hurricane's #65 is fer sure the cutest. And he's a pretty good player too. Go Tigers!
Oh, and everyone should be nicer on these blogs. Can't we all just get along? Good grief.
Region 9 | 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Regarding the size differences between the region 9 4A and 3A schools - If you look at the middle school and intermediate school numbers of the schools in question (look at the next 4 years coming up) it is clear that the St. George schools will continue to be much bigger in the years to come. There numbers are much larger than Hurricanes. The St. George schools are where they belong and Hurricane is where it belongs. I know its hard for the St. George schools to accept that they now have to play and compete against schools that are actually there size.
GO TIGERS! | 8:38 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
good luck and tear it up on JD friday!
Wrong Reg 9 | 9:00 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
There is one school who will be bigger and that's Snow Canyon, and if 100 students more are such a difference why is it ok that Desert Hills with 700 kids are in 3A with you? Take you personal reasons out of it and look at the big picture,it would be much better to have the 300 kids from Snow Canyon move over to Desert Hills then you have 7 schools in So Utah that could be in 3A.There would be 100 to 200 kid difference in the schools but would not that be better than to make the St George schools play up and have to have them spend hours on buses and lots of travel money,of is it more important to have Hurricane dominate in 3A ????
Re:Hurricane Mom #65 | 9:12 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
I'll agree, Ryan Butler is the cutest gentle grizzly bear off the field. But he is insane on the field!
Anonymous | 9:44 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
i can't figure out how the st george schools even think they have an argument on the realignment. The cut off is 1000. 500-1000 is 3a. PV and Dixie are barely under 1000 this year only because of the new school. 700 students at desert hills. add 350 to pv and dixie that is between 1300-1400 kids. hurricane is up in numbers the past few years and are at about 830. So ya for about 1 year the numbers are within 200. pv, dixie, and sc will all be over 1000 for good next year and in 4a, remember cut off 1000. hurricane will be 3a till they reach 1000. cmon people it's not hard to figure out.
Coach Woodbury | 9:54 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
I speak for myself when i say this...If you had anything to do with that petition by supporting or signing it please don't come to the game friday. we don't want you there. if you ask me there is nothing worse of a persons character than being dishonest and disloyal and you were all both. nothing has changed with the coaching staff because nothing needed to change. Coach Homer is a great coach with the program and kids his first priority, not just your kid, all the kids. wambat you don't even deserve a reply so i won't. P.S. I still swear as much as i ever did.
Re: Wrong Region 9 | 10:13 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Way back when Hurricane was 2A, they were bumped up to 3A long before their numbers would have qualified Hurricane to get bumped to 3A. St. George didn't care, they probably thought it was great. Now that PVHS, DHS, and SCHS have been bumped up to 4A thats probably all you have done is boob about it. I think its time to get over it and learn to deal with it cause I don't think it is gonna change. So work with what ya have and stop complaining about what you don't have. 3A or 4A, Hurricane has held their own in Region 9 this year. Less boobin more trying to figure out how to make your name in 4A. Unless, your PV than you've already showed that you can compete with nearly all 4A teams. Should have won the Semi-finals game but disappointments are part of life. My apathy is with you.

Did the coaching staff of any of the six teams listed above come across the field after the game to whine about HURRICANE RUNNING UP THE SCORE?

Anonymous | 10:37 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
its hard to get mad at the other team for running up the score when its their 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th teams RUNNING the ball for scores. you weren't at any of those games. just because we won by alot doesn't mean we ran it up. thanks for posting how successful our team was this year though. it is greatly appreciated.

Hurricane's Justin Edwards has been a part of the Tigers' surge to 3A power over the past few seasons under Chris Homer's coaching.
