USU | 7:51 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
USU is a Division I GRAVEYARD JOB for any coach.

You know you are going to get the dregs from California and Texas.

You will get fourth or fifth choice of in-state recruits.

You are going to get drilled in at least two money games every year.

In spite of all the above there has to be an optimist somewhere that would love to come to Logan.

ANYONE? ANYONE? ANYONE?

Remember when? | 8:03 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Guy had his first press conference and he announced how happy he was to be at the University of Utah?

You know he was doomed from that moment on.

will turn it around! enough with the big sky talk. even if usu is a middle of the road wac team they don't need to drop to the big sky. that is non sense.

whoever the new coach is going to be. He should consider getting Scott Mitchell from Springville to be Quarteback Coach or maybe even OC.
Dupaix | 9:05 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
from Skyline High needs to move up to the College level and should be a nice addition to USU Football.
Geaux Joe | 9:48 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Some names I'm sure Barnes is considering, based on past associations:

Mike Kramer
Chris Tormey

Utah State could find a great niche in the Big Sky, and there are regional rivals in Weber, ISU, Montana, and Montana State. The athletic budget would be near the top of the conference instead of near the bottom of the WAC.
Ag-fan | 10:36 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
A DesNews page A-1 headline "USU fires grid coach", appeared below juggler Bill Gnadt's photo, juggling at once a bowling ball, a chain saw and a pitchfork (easier than coaching USU football?)

Worse yet: talk of hiring top High School coaches because they're used to winning in High School. Even worse, feel-good talk of dropping below D-1 level. Enough of caving in! Real growth comes from playing better foes, not lesser foes for an illusory, hollow "victory" (NOT!)

A conference is for dozens of sports, not football alone, and college is for education. USU graduates most football players, few of whom will make football their career, and they now avoid jail.

USU has progressed (so why fire Guy?), playing ever better as the season progressed, winning more respect from foes but not those faint of heart. USU plays against teams of far more resources than USU gets from distant Wasatch Front legislators who fund pro-soccer stadiums but starve USU pay, scholarships, education, research, resources, facilities, sports, housing, everything.

Idea: cut injuries in football and add more fans in seats: do more home games early in the fall for frozen-tundra sites like USU and Wyoming, later games in warmer climes.

New Coach | 10:39 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Coach Crowden, obviously knows how to run and offense and recruit. And could prob get him at a discount.
Re: My prediction | 10:39 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
I totally agree with 'my prediction'. Many posts seem to agree that Brent Guy has been a class guy, has taken the right approach against impossible odds. If (a big IF, we all know) Guy was on the verge of putting it together a little bit more next year, then Scott Barnes would not get the credit. Brent Guy would. Scott Barnes has been here long enough to see the progress that has been made.....just read his quotes from the press conference.....but the only way for Scott Barnes to get credit for any potential improvement next year is to fire Brent Guy, and then hire a new coach who can capitalize on the new facility, the rebuilding that Brent Guy has done, the fact that for the first time in many, many years there are four full years of recruit in the system using all scholarships available. Bottom line....if a new coach does better, then Scott Barnes gets credit.......if Brent Guy had stayed and done well, Barnes gets less or no credit. He wants to move on, so this was a no brainer for him.
Know it all | 10:44 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Todd Bradford is a name that will be talked about alot for this job. Utah native, and solid recruiter in TX and East Coast. (There are no players in Utah anyway so who cares if he knows the state) Currently DC at So. Miss. The next coming of Urban Meyer.
Blueman | 10:46 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
To read some of the putdowns of UofU and BYU fans, I certainly understand the point of view, but I would say you don't understand Utah State. For all the Aggies have been through for 30 years, they are a testament to the word resilient. The program could have burned several times but didn't because of the deep-rooted passion of the best fans in the world. As one loyal booster stated, the Phoenix shall rise again. Watch out Cougars and Utes.
True Blue Aggie | 10:49 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Why would you want to drop down to a Division 2 Program when we compete very well in every sport but football. it makes no sense. What does make sense is dumping football, start a baseball program. Many schools have done it. Look at the Big West, good basketball and great baseball. Same thing with Wichita State. Baseball is a lot cheaper to run than football (not to mention the greatest game on earth)!
CROSHAW! | 10:50 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Leave Crowshaw alone! I love that guy, I played for him and he is the best players coach to ever coach! LONG LIVE THE REBELS!

I vote for Coach Ryan Bishop from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah

how about Riley Jenson the last quarterback who had a winning record- he and John L Smith. They could help your quick as a cat quarterback to some damage. Riley assisted at NC State and was Phillip Rivers QB coach
Big Sky vs Goodbye Boise | 11:06 p.m. Nov. 17, 2008
I see the value of playing Weber State more frequently and even striking up a rival with them and I'd be the first to welcome it. But it seems to me that USU Football is the single reason for the change and that doesn't seem right when other factors should be considerd. And when I consider those other factors I see that USU is a great fit for division I.

I believe that Boise State will be invited to join the MWC soon and that will have a huge impact for USU and the WAC. Utah State should be able to benifit from this change more than anyone in the WAC. USU will become the school with the nicest facilities in the conference and thus be very appealing to recruits over the other WAC schools. The playing field will also be leveled and WAC competition will tighten making things much more interesting when football comes around.

All of you who are whining to drop the big sky talk need to realize that the NCAA is on the verge of forcing you down to 1-AA or FCS because you can't average anywhere close to 15,000 fans a game and you won't anytime soon. It is highly doubtful that Boise State will join the MWC because of their poor academics. The only way that Logan State will have any chance of winning anything is if they drop down to the big sky but be forewarned you'll probably still get dominated by Weber State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington, Probably Sac State and Portland State as well.. But hey, at leas you can beat Idaho State--that's as many wins as you've had the last few years! But Let me go ahead and be the first one to welcome you to the big sky--Weber State is getting bored with beating the dog crap out of the rest of the teams in the Big Sky! Weber State=National Champions this year!
Big Sky Fan | 12:13 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
FYI, the Big Sky is Division 1 in all sports INCLUDING football! Football had formerly been called Division 1-AA and it is FAR above Division II. The only difference between 1-AA and Division 1-A is a few scholarships and they have a true 16 team playoff system like it should be done! The top 20 teams in 1-AA (now called Football Championship league) routinely beat lower teams from 1-A. San Diego St. lost to Cal Poly this year, Iowa State loses to N. Iowa every couple years, even a team like Michigan lost to App. State at Home last year!

I say they stick it out a few more years in the WAC to see if they can get competitive, but the very competitive Big Sky with great regional rivalries would not be all that bad a move!
FAV4SHO | 12:19 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Mike Favero should take that job. He'd do wonders with D'Andre and the spread offense. He's the most college ready HS coach in the state, quit this garbage about Skyline or Alta.
Ute Fan Wishes Aggies Well | 12:31 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Hey Aggies:

I truly hope you find someone that can recruit and return USU to glory.
Rover | 12:33 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Here's one from my HS:

Bucky Orton, coaching at Kanab HS; USU alum. Kidding! I don't care who you hire, you do not want to hire a HS coach for a Div-1 College Football program. That said, I'm not too surprised that Guy is gone. He's done some improvements, but just not quick enough. Here's to hoping that the Ags can get a decent coach for next year, someone that is to football as Stew Morril is to basketball.
Wise up and Play down | 12:42 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
You have to consider how fun it would be to have the Aggies move down one level and into the Big Sky conference. They would pack the stands. I'm not sure the Aggies could beat Montana or Montana State year in and year out, but they may just be in the top 3. Swallow some pride and make an arch-rivalry with Montana and Weber State. It's much funner than to watch a 65-3 blow out at Nebraska.
Dallas Aggie | 7:17 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Boise State would be crazy to leave the WAC for the MWC. They are dominating in the WAC, but would be just another "second tier" team shooting for "perfection" in the MWC in order to get a BCS. That seems to be easier to do within the WAC. Plus, they have a great contract with ESPN in the WAC and only the Mtn. in the MWC....I see no value of changing conferences. The MWC is not that impressive.
Bishop | 10:23 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Coach Bishop at Davis only runs 9 plays!!!
Brent Guy | 10:35 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Guy did a lot of good things for the Aggies. Lets face it, He took a job with almost insurmountable odds! I wish him well and wish he could have had one more year to put the past 4 together. The Aggies are in a position to do some good things the next couple of years and now the AD will get the credit that Guy should get.

RE: Drop BYU | 10:56 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
I don't think USU will be able to remain a division-I team if they drop BYU from their schedule because attendance would be so bad. Not to mention the money that comes into USU's program every time the cougars or utes come to town. However, I'm sure BYU would be happy to be dropped so they could schedule another home and home against an OOC cupcake like Florida State. Drop BYU...now that's funny. Big sky, here we come. Good luck to whoever takes this thankless job. They're gonna need it.

John Loser Smith? He was the most penalized coach in Louisville history. When Loser left, he told the good folks of Louisville that it was a loser town that could recruit top talent. Bobby Petrino came in after him to prove his statement wrong. He was negogiating with Michigan State while Louisville was playing in a bowl game. His players found out about his leaving on their cell phones. Loser had the nerve to come back to live in the town that he insulted. You are fools if you want Loser back!
Jimmy | 11:53 a.m. Nov. 18, 2008
As much as I hate to hear it I have heard that Robert Anae is on the short list. They like his offense and his ptential to recruit from the Islands. I seriously hope they go after one of there old recyled coaches since I am a BYU fan
Hall or Mitchell | 12:57 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
They should try and get Hall to give up his senor year and start coaching. He could be the next Sarkisian, since he wont succeed in the NFL. Or you could always try for Scott Mitchell (hopefully I dont have to explain who he is), his name around SLC should be able to snag a few good recruits away from BYU/Utah.
Colorado Aggie Fan | 1:58 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Sometime change may seem unavoidable, but is it always necessary? Be very carefull of change for change sake. Be very carefull. You do not want to loose some of your hidden talent. A good part of the "progress" made by coach Guy and his staff was in no small part due to the ability and dedication of his video coordinator, my son, Bill Garren. Without a doubt I am very bias, but I have seen Bill's dedication to the Aggie Football program and the quantum leap in technolgy he has brought to the video department at USU. Ever notice and wonder why the lights were on at 4 AM, in the football office after a practice or game? Bill was in his office preparing film for the coaches and the team meetings for the next day. Ask Bill, better yet ask the coaches, about the number of hours Bill has to put in during any given week before, during and after football season. Ask the players about Bill's highlight films. Ask the seniors about the special film is does for them at the end of the season. The NFL should be so lucky!

Utah State should swap with Montana...

Montana gets 25000 a game
Wins at football

belonds in the Wac

Utah State is good at basketball
Sucks at attendence

Should be in the Big Sky.

Just make the Trade!

Football Fan | 7:25 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Kent Baer all the way. It's just a given. He is from Logan, has family there, and understands the dynamics at USU.
Next Coach | 7:28 p.m. Nov. 18, 2008
Kent Baer, enough said!
True Aggie9 | 2:00 p.m. Nov. 20, 2008
PLEASE for the love of everyting holy...DO NOT HIRE KENT BAER. I had season tickets to the Washington Huskies when we was the D-Coordinator and they were the worst excuse for a Defense I've ever seen. They still are.
Terrible recruiter and even worse gameday coach. NEVER MAKES ADJUSTMENTS.
Anyone looking at Baer is an idiot who has never seen one of his teams play.
USU football | 11:39 p.m. Nov. 24, 2008
DeWayne Walker would be awesome! I'm relly excited about a number of guys that I've heard are interested in the job. I just want someone who has been around, has some experience, and can bring in a good staff. Who cares if some coach only comes in for a short time and uses USU as a stepping stone. If coaches come in and move on it means they at least won here... Look at BSU they've been through a number of coaches and it seems like each one is better then the last. That is what happens when you have a good staff in place!!!
Les Hamilton Alta | 8:55 a.m. Nov. 28, 2008
Look what he has done The biggest quality knows how to pick to coaches. And can make things happen.
