Least surprising development of the football season

Its about time. Hope they hire Stew on as head football coach. haha
Scott Oregon | 7:54 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I thought he would get another year. They showed improvement this year that could have been built on next season.

It was not that he was not a good person - he just could not win. When it comes down to that you have to make the tough choice. I hope Boise State wins and that he enjoys the free $250k he gets for the last year of his contract.

I was born and raised in Logan and the only fond memory I have of USU Football was when they won the Las Vegas Bowl over Ball State. Hopefully, they can bring in someone who will at least win 4-5 games a year. Does John L. Smith have a job? GO AGGIES GO AGGIES HEY HEY HEY. (lamest fight song ever)
HSFAN | 8:04 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Who is USU??

Never heard of them...but I have heard of Weber State and Ron McBride!

USU was foolish not to take Ron McBride a few years ago!
I Bleed Blue | 8:04 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Hey Aggies!

Your new coach is just down the road in Ogden. McBride would be great for USU.
Just a Utah State student.... | 8:09 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008

Good Hire Gary Andersen Already.
Had to be done | 8:16 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
BG seems like a nice guy, but his system never worked. I dont know why we only had a few JC transfers over the years. The whole recruit just highschool kids is terrible.

He just never seemed to take accountability. This move is a year too late. Your coaching career is over if you go to utst. Theres no chance you can succeed here. Barnes has his work cut out for him.
Dallas Aggie | 8:20 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Well that is too bad for coach Guy. Thank you for your service and for taking the fall for us. You did a great job, finding great new talent and cleaning up our off field issues. Hold your head high, you took on a mountain of a problem when you signed up as our head coach. I sincerely wish you the best and hope you have great success in the future. Please bring home a W on your final game with USU against New Mexico State.

Good luck and thanks again for your service!
West Valley | 8:25 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Finally! I just feel so bad for Otis Nelson and the rest of the seniors that had to deal with that program, sorry buddy! They have the talent to win some games, they just need a coach that wants to pay the extra price. Good lock O dizzle and I hope all your dreams can still come true! Your boy one luv!
Aggie Alum | 8:26 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I feel bad for Guy, I think he tried to make a difference, but I can't disagree that a change was needed. I'll look forward to a fresh start with a new head coach next year. Hopefully, the AD can find that person.
USU Fan | 8:26 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I hope we get better! Actually I really hope we don't get worse! I wish Guy good luck in his future and the Aggies good luck finding a new and better coach!
in state coach | 8:26 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Either we try to get Coach A or somebody else will, I'm not saying he will take the job with everything he has done at Utah but al least lets try. HIRE ANDERSEN.
5 wins? | 8:35 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Can't you count it as 6 wins in the past 3 years? I mean all Aggie and Ute fans claimed a victory for USU when they scored a few points on BYU.
Why? | 8:38 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I actually feel bad for Guy. He'll land on his feet somewhere but it really doesn't matter who you bring in to coach. When it comes down to it, the football program is still Utah State. A new coach won't have success for at least 5 years. The whole mentality of the program has to change. Who really wants to come to Logan? It's small, nothing to do, it can get really cold, never on national television. The fact that there are already two nationally recognized teams in Utah doesn't help Utah State for recruiting.

If they do bring in a new coach, how long will you give them before you axe them as well. A new coach will need at least 5 years and really up to 10.
Questions for New Coach | 8:45 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
1. How do you overcome 30 years of futility?
2. How do you change the negative charma that follows this program?
3. How do keep local talent from leaving?
4. How do we compete with Utah and BYU?
5. How you going to accept losing?
6. Is USU simply a stepping stone?
7. Did you land a golden parachute? 5 year guaranteed?
8. Can you make USU significant in the football world?
9. Why?
john l smih | 8:50 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
The rumor is that John L Smith is already signed up and that they wanted to do this sooner but the win over Hawaii delayed things.
Anonymous | 8:54 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Hire Andy Ludwig. Or Robert Anae.
Gary Anderson? | 8:57 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Gary is smart enogh to stick around Utah for a while. Whit may receive some large job offers after this season. Anderson would more than likely be the number one candidate at Utah if Whittingham chases the cash.
Hire 2 | 8:59 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I think Gary Andersen should be looked at and would make a great head coach at USU!! He was head coach at SUU and worker with Urban Meyer and Kyle.
Gary Anderson | 9:01 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Why would Gary go to Logan? How about Andy Ludwig instead? It's a dead end job at USU and Anderson may end up being the coach at Utah one day. Very few coaches get a chance to be head coaches again once they coach at USU. This machine can't be fixed. The new coach will be gone within 4 years.
Too Bad | 9:01 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
It is hard for a program to develop when you change coaches every two or three years...USU needs some continuity. Please hire someone that has a tie to Utah and wants to be sucessful here and knows the schools. USU can be a great program but this revolving coaching door makes that difficult
who cares about football... | 9:03 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Isn't it time for Utah State Basketball to start?!?!

GO AGGIES
AggieFanFutureHope | 9:07 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
What is wrong with Scott Barnes?, is what all USU fans should be asking. Maybe his lack of experience played into this decision. If he hasn't checked the news lately we are struggling in the economy. Not only will he have to pay out Brent Guy's contract, he is going to have to pay a whole new contract with the new coaching staff, which isn't going to amount to much. USU has the3rd lowest salary for head coaches in the Wac. I'm pretty sure the new coach isn't going to get paid more than Stew Morrill's new contract, so for the amount that USU will offer, who will they bring in that is going to change a football program in the custom Aggie 5 year contract? You don't even have enough time to create a stable recruiting class.

Trust me I want a successful football program, however USU football will never be successful if we continue to fire a coach every 5 years.

Brent Guy is an outstanding coach/individual. How do you expect him to revamp a team with such little funding, and support?
aggieblue | 9:17 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Andersen is the guy to hire if we want the program turned around. His record stands for itself. Good luck stealing him away from programs that want to win.
So long Guy... | 9:18 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Brent Guy is an incredible person. He did a great job trying to get the students to support the team. But, I must agree, it was time for USU to move on. Best luck to Guy wherever he ends up. I look forward to seeing a new coach head up USU.
Anonymous | 9:23 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Finally. At least now, we can win more than two games a year!!!
Former Player | 9:25 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
one thing for sure is the Coach Guy is leaving the program better than he received it. The talent level is the highest it's been since 93'. He also cleaned up the off field non-sense, which is a brath of fresh air. It's amazing how much some of lack in knowledge of football and what it takes to win at a D1 level. You're right need more wins but Guy is the coach to get us there, no we get to start over again. If the coach loses we say "same old story" they won't though because the talent to win is already in place.
I've talked to players and they were commited to Guy. Last time I checked that's who played the games not the fans.
Dallas Aggie re: Why? | 9:27 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Check your facts....we are part of the WAC and have been on more nationally televised games than those found within the television channel called the Mountain.

Logan is a great place and we will be just fine. In fact, I expect us to be at least .500 next year and bowl eligible.

Have a great weekend! Did I mention Logan is great? Little bit of heaven on earth!
RE Why? | 9:28 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Why? Why what?! Granted the Aggies have been playing better as of late, but come on, their offensive scheme is horrible. The mentality of the program has changed. And your comment about not getting any recruits is a joke. Its not because of Utah and BYU, its because the Aggies stink right now! IF they do bring in a new coach? Don't you mean when!?

Good luck to who ever the Aggies hire, it is a welcoming change to the Aggie fans.
T | 9:38 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Gary Anderson would be an absolute idiot to take the Logan State job. He is going to have a whole bunch of offers after this season--any of which would be better than the logan state job. That program is never going to have big time success because nobody wants to come play there. And the idea that Coach Mac would come up there is asinine! Mac's going to win the National Championship this year and the only thing that logan state has the potential of even winning in the next 20 years is the worst team in football award.
Bring in... | 9:45 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Jonas Weatherbie. Currently coaching with Charlie at ULM as the quarterback coach. He's young, talented, and won't be looking for the high dollar. Just a thought
You're not paying attention | 9:48 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
So little funding and support? Brent Guy has had more funding and support than any coach at USU has for the past 30 years. And he still couldn't do anything with it. He did a few good things here, but overall his system just did not work. This is the absolute best thing Barnes could have done this year. Randy should have done it last year before bailing on us to go to Florida State.
Ute Fan | 9:56 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Yes, PLEASE hire Andy Ludwig and put us out of our misery and ensure 4 more years of wallowing in the mire in Logan!
Football Fan | 9:59 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Coach Guy is a nice guy but didn't learn one important concept. Don't overlook local talent!
situation | 10:04 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
the thing about it is... if they hire john l. smith he is still under contract from michigan state so we wouldn't have to pay him the first year.
AggieFan74 | 10:14 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I don't like to see anyone get fired! I know, I've been there myself and it's not a real pleasant experience. Unfortunately the coaching business on the college level is all about "wins." Coach Guy did try hard to build a competitive program, he has integrity and got rid of bad character players. He just didn't win enough football games within a reasonable period of time. It's a reasonalbe debate as to whether or not USU can ever have a competitive program in Division I for the various reasons given by "Why?" above. However, I would argue that USU can have a competive program. Does anyone remember what Boise State's program looked like 10 years ago. Has anyone been to Lincoln, Nebraska, Norman Oklahoma, or State College, Pennsylvania (Penn State University). I have over the years. These places are as cold and wet as Logan, Utah in November. And there is not a whole lot of things to do for young student athletes in any of these "big time" college towns. What USU does not have (that these programs do have) is a ton of money to buy a "big time" college coach. That's the "never ending" difference!
Re: Dallas Aggie | 10:16 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Logan is a fine place to live. Everyone loves a Big Blue burger at A & W. The school is great! Don't get me wrong. I should have been more clear. I wasn't talking about the coach, I was talking about the recruits. Logan is below junior colleges as far as recruiting. Recruits will go to better programs, bigger cities, more exposure, warmer weather before they come to Logan. Your best athletes in Cache county leave quickly and most of the kids on the Wasatch Front (look at your roster) go to Utah, BYU, Weber, SUU, Dixie and Snow Before USU. It's simply the facts. The Aggies recruit out of state and through junior colleges because nobody has a pre-conceived notion about USU football.

Even though BYU and Utah play on the MTN, they still receive more attention than all but one team in the WAC. That one team (Boise) has just asked to move to the MWC. It may or may not happen. USU is simply insignificant in the football world.

Don't take it personal, it's simply the facts.
Anonymous | 10:26 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
It's a little unfortunate they gave up on him already. It takes time to build a program. Especially a program that has consistently been at an all-time low. Don't expect a new coach to come in and produce magic. This program is going to take some time and Guy made considerable progress winning two games and coming close to winning several others. Good luck to the Aggies.
Re: Re: Why | 10:38 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
You mention that my comment about getting recruits is a joke? Who did they get? I have a copy of the current roster. There are 98 kids on the roster and 15 of them are from Utah. That 16%. Most are from California and Texas. I don't recognize one name from the kids from Utah. Utah has 43 kids from Utah and BYU has 45 kids from Utah. This means USU is losing the local recruiting battle. This won't change.
blue ag | 11:08 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
If USU is simply insignificant why did you read the article, and then take the time to comment and respond. You must have absolutely no life if you need to put in your two cents on this program that is lower than Snow. Some people just can't live without being negative, and pessimistic, I really feel bad for you.
Bob carlisle | 11:43 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
why now? you can not blame brent guy for the last decade of usu football. weatherby snuck out of here for the navy job after relatively minimal success, jon l. smith took off to louisville after relatively minimal success. Arselainian was arguably the worst coach in division one history. The now defunct Big west left us with no conference, the ags had to settle with the sun belt where they often played conference road games in places like alabama and tennessee, Brent was begining to rise from utah states torched ashes by being competitive in most of the conference games this year. he deserves next season.
winning resume | 12:05 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Hey, anyone ever heard of Snow college? I heard they're undefeated, 11-0 and ready to play in another National championship game. How come I don't here their coaches name pop up ? Seems like this guy knows how to win. Why do the aggies keep going after loseer?

Quest for Mediocrity | 12:23 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
I hope for Aggie fans that the "guy" they bring in next is Urban Meyer's clone because if not this is going to be a move backwards. I felt like Brent Guy had gotten rid of the bad apples and had turned a corner this year. He brought in some decent athletes at the skill positions and in a couple of years those guys could be a top 3-4 team in the WAC. Add a few returned missionary linemen and your challenging Fresno and hanging with Boise. I'm sure Aggie boosters are looking at the programs to the south and saying "that was fast". But BYU and Utah had decent player on the shelf. USU's cupboards were bare. Maybe Guy isn't quite a Bronco or Whit but maybe he was and didn't get the final year he needed to prove it.
Ute Fan | 12:27 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Yeah, hire Andy Ludwig! Pleeeease!!
True aggie fan | 12:31 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
You have to give Brent Guy a break. He said at the very beginning that he wanted to recruit high school players, you are starting to see some of the talent that he brought in. Look at the Aggies since they started their young offensive linemen, they played good. Borel is only a sophomore, Turbin is just a freshman. They have talent they just need to have a coach with an offensive mind. You need to have just a little patience with the team. Good luck to Coach Guy. You did help the program.
Anonymous | 12:38 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
You can't compare the aggie basketball team with the football team. Yes, the b-ball team has won 23 games for the past 8 years but you have to look at who they are playing... Teams from the Big West, Southern Utah, Weber St. Utah Valley University, of course you can win games with a schedule like that. Look at the football team, they've played at Oklahoma, at Nebraska, at Arkansas, at Oregon. They play a lot tougher strenght of schedule. Put teams that are like Idaho St on your schedule and you would win 6-7 games. So don't judge the team to much by win-loss, look who they played. Aggie b-ball, it would be awesome if you go out and play teams like Kent St. Southern Illinois, teams in the mid-major ranks that would help the SOS, but go b-ball team!
