Whittingham certainly will devise a scheme to deal with Collie. He will be double teamed every play and Pitta may not be available.

Who will step up to be the difference maker?

If Collie cant get into Utahs head again, I hope Reed has a great game and ends up being the hero. Either he or George. Either would be great.

again, lets hope BYU can get up for this game.
Can't Wait | 1:28 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
This will be a great game between 2 great teams. I personally can't wait to see this game. It should be fun no matter what happens. May the best team win. Too bad BYU lost to TCU otherwise, this could have been an even better game. No matter the outcome, it will be fun to be a part of it.

Let's keep it clean and let both schools do their thing, because both schools represent the state very well. So any supposed Ute or Cougar fan who bashes is not a true Ute or Cougar fan at all.

If only BYU had not lost to TCU, the Cougs would be ranked a spot or two above the Utes in the top 10 and it would be phenomenal........Oh well.

My hope is that BYU will be healthy and that the defense will regain the swagger from earlier in the year when Scott Johnson was putting the pain on opposing teams.

This game will certainly be determined by TURNOVERs!

The team that wins the turnover margin wins the game.

(Keep the ball in Unga's and Vakapuna's hands and pound it down their throats!)

If the Y had a defense that was on a par with it's offense, they would win on Saturday. But, they don't and they won't.

the players play w/ no emotion and are zombie-like due to their zombie like coaches who continue spoon-feed them the same nonsense.

refreshing to finally see a coug get sick of it and try to rally his teammates. these guys are the most emotionless group of players i have ever seen dawn a cougar uniform.

and yes, i'm a coug fan.
Anonymous | 7:28 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
scott johnson putting the PAIN on opposing players??? are you kidding me?? i saw one decent hit when he caused a fumble vs. UCLA but other than that the only pain I have seen is my own as these DBs continue to get lit up
Lack of emotion | 7:51 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Bronco is a great coach, no doubt about it by looking at his record and what he has done for the program. But it seems that the team is too mechanical and doesn't play with enough emotion or instinct. It's great that Collie fired up the troops, but it would be great if Bronco could do the same thing. For example- why not let the players get fired up and talk after the AFA game about next weeks game? He's almost too business like.
Just my opinion. What are your thoughts?
Eugene | 7:52 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
No bashing from me since both teams deserve their current rankings. The Cougars know what they are up against going on the road to SLC, but the Utes had better be careful about over-confidence which could happen being undefeated thus far and coming off a blow out.

If the Cougs keep up that emotion smacked into them at halftime by Collie, I will predict a close game with the Y winning 41-38.

The difference will be turnovers and Hall to Collie-Pitta-George-Reed-Unga-Fui. Hall will spread the wealth to at least 6 different receivers for this game to go over 300 yards passing. Utes will bottle up the Coug's rushing game except Unga and Fui will make needed first downs in the short game and at the goal line. Sakoda will keep the game close since he is awesome!!

Let the game begin . . .
Just play the game... | 8:08 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
So much trash talking to come, but may the best team win on the field. Remember, it's just a game.

That being said, I hope the Cougs demolish the Utes. I'm hoping the Cougs being underdogs will get them ready to play. They haven't been at the top of their game for a while.

We must respect the Utes football team, prepare, and then go defeat.
Pocatello Cougar | 8:09 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
The loss at TCU was a godsend. Teams with long winning streaks eventually lose, and more often than not, they lose more than that one game during the rest of the year. The Cougars lost to a good team, then stumbled for a few games, barely winning against UNLV and CSU. They have righted themselves and will be ready for Utah.

Now, It's the Utes riding a winning streak and have far more on the line that does BYU. The worse case for the Cougars would be to lose to Utah and finish the season with three consecutive 10-2 finishes. That's a good thing. If Utah loses, their winning streak, top 10 ranking, BCS hopes and undisputed conference crown are all gone.

If BYU beats Utah, there will be a three way tie for the conference championship, but I'm not sure how they determine who goes to the Las Vegas Bowl. BYU wins the tiebreaker over Utah, Utah wins it over TCU and TCU wins it over BYU.

It's impossible for any team to win on the road at Air Force-TCU-UTAH two years in a row. Winning 5 out of 6 will be miracle enough.
"Whipping" Air Force? | 8:11 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
The game was 7 points mid-way through the fourth quarter. How can you say that BYU "whipped" Air Force?!

I'm a Cougar fan through and through, but that comment is just silly. Let's realize the game for what it was: a wake up call!

If BYU doesn't fix it's O-line problems, we're in trouble against Utah. Air Force got to Max Hall how many times during the game?

The AF game is a good, quality win for BYU. But please Dick Harmon, you're better than that aren't you? It was by NO means a "whipping"
Dayton_Cougar | 8:33 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
As a BYU grad I look forward to the game. It should be a thriller. May the best team win.

No matter the result of the game, the MWC has four great teams this year and one of them, the winner of this game should go to a BCS bowl.

Finally the game will be decided on the field and not in the blogs.
BYU has nothing to lose | 8:33 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008

1) BYU has nothing to lose --they already lost everything on Oct 16.
2) Utah has tremendous pressure to stay on track for a BCS bowl --the pressure has been growing starting with the win over Michigan

Looking for a good game with Utah staying perfect on a time-expiring, 49-yard field goal by the King.

Bottom line: The BYU - U of U rivalry is a great rivalry every year. It's an added bonus that next week's game will mean so much for both teams, not just in-state bragging rights. Both of the coaches are very classy people and run classy programs. Now, if only the fans - red and blue - can be as classy. Hmmm, that's asking a lot, but one can hope....

Go COUGS!!!
Bowl Outcomes | 9:08 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I believe if BYU, TCU and Utah end up in a 3-way tie for the conference championship, the LV Bowl can choose whichever of the 3 teams it wants (I think that's the rule for any tie). They're not going to choose TCU...their fans don't travel well. The LV Bowl probably would choose BYU since they would have just beaten Utah and BYU has generated record attendance each year it has been to the LV Bowl.

So I guess that means Utah is playing this Saturday either to play in a BCS bowl (if they win) or the Poinsettia Bowl (if they lose). Talk about high stakes.
New "BCS" Conference? | 9:13 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
BYU and Utah should join with TCU, Boise State, Fresno, Tulsa, Air Force, UNLV (mainly for basketball) and maybe Hawaii to form a stronger conference top-to-bottom, with a lot of offense. If you stacked the "best" of this conference up against any one of the BCS programs any given year, they would give them a run for their money.

Use the respect this league garners to petition the BCS for an automatic berth, #7 out of the ten BCS spots. I think the established conferences would rather cede an automatic berth to a strong conference than have at least one at-large bid go to a team from a "weaker" conference every season just because they beat a bunch of "patsies".

This arrangement could also be used to drop the idiotic mtn. contract and pick up something national, from ESPN, etc.

The Utes clearly have struggled all year with their offense and have been really lucky to win several of their games. When your kicker is winning your games for you, you've got some problems. The Cougs, obviously have had some issues with their defense, as well, and have managed to pull out a few close ones.

It'll be really interesting to see what happens on Saturday. Both coaches are great guys. Both teams are great and have a lot of great guys on them.

I will be cheering for the Cougars, but I also think the Utes have a great team. Good luck to everyone.

GO COUGARS!!
OKC Cougar | 10:12 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Although not exactly as we originally anticipated at the beginning of the year, this match-up between an undefeated Utah at 11-0 and a 10-1 BYU both highly ranked is perfectly orchestrated to focus at least part of the nations attention on MWC football.

This has been a great year for the MWC and for the state of Utah. Whoever wins on the 22nd will deserve all the accolades and fanfare that belong to a great season.

After all the smack talk and all the inflated emotions from both sides-we have finally arrived at the moment of decision. Let's have fun Cougs and Utes and may the best team win!!

Congrats to both programs for great seasons in '08!!

If the Las Vegas Bowl can find any way to invite BYU, they will do it. They prefer BYU to any other team. BYU attracts huge crowds--more than anyone else. That's a money maker for Las Vegas. If BYU beats Utah, it will be BYU at the Las Vegas Bowl.
MJB | 10:49 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I'm sick of hearing fans whine about bashing and a call to be 'classy'. I haven't seen one case of over-the-top bashing. Stop trying to be a mediator and parent to the readers. Rivalries are fueled by passionate diehard fans, something that these stuck-up harvard wannabies don't know anything about.

I live for the holy war, and I've been looking forward to this year's every day of the season. It's gonna be good. Watch out utes, the cougs are coming for you, to beat you in your own house!

There's no way Collie will be held under 100 yds. He's way to good, you can triple team him and he's still tear you apart.
utahd | 11:07 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Everyone can score on BYU. Look at CSU and UNLV against them. Utah will slow down BYU they have kept every team under their statistical averages. Utah's defense win it and BYU defense looses it.
Underrated | 11:21 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I think that both of these teams are great and have been underrated by the ESP?N crowd. Too bad Utah has to lose at home and fall out of the top ten.
RE: Lack of Emotion | 11:28 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008
I agree that BYU has had a huge lack of emotion this season. It seems that early in the season after a win, all the team could do was focus on the mistakes made, and not celebrate a win. After the TCU loss though, Bronco Mendenhall has realized that celebrating wins is a crutial part of being successful. It is much easier to win if you know how to win and have fun winning. I think this is why Bronco wanted the team to focus on the win after beating Air Force. Don't sell yourself short BYU, enjoy your accomplishment.

Dick Harmon has been drinking too much of the Blue Cool-Aid.

BYU should move up to 12-14. Come on Dick that's just nuts. Dosen't a team ahead of you have to lose to accomplish that. Nobody lost. Who are you going to jump?

Cougars, you did really good against the undersized
#35 defense in the land. Now we'll see how you do against a big, fast, top ten defense.

Please note, that as prolific as your offense has been this year, Utah has scored more points.
And those points collectively have been scored against better competition.

Both teams are motivated. It'll be a fun game.

In a game of this magnitude, I would always take the better defenseive team.

Notes:

Utah: top 10 (5 ypg out of #5) against the #17 offense.

Utah #35 offense vs. BYU Defense #54.

Time of Pos. Utah #10 vs. BYU #50.

Different offensive styles(Pass/Run): Utah 50/50 BYU 70/30.

Utah: 34
BYU: 21
Whipping? | 12:50 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
That's exactly what I was thinking as I read this article. The Cougars "whipped" the Falcons?

Oh my boy Harmon, get a hold of your emotions. BYU is not very good and I see it pains you. Enjoy the last 6 days until doomsday for the cougars. 2 losses put them in third place behind Utah and TCU. TCU goes to Vegas and BYU goes to??? Maybe that should be the scope of your next article My friend Harmon.

And on the 11th week of the 2008 college football season, byu beat a team with a winning record, wow! The Mountain West conference needs a BCS berth and money, don't expect the ref's to help you out like they did with hapless Washington, New Mexico, and Colorado State. Your a horrible road team. Louie Sakoda is the difference! Utes win big, not a close game. Have fun in the New Mexico Bowl.
Boise Cougar | 1:21 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
To Vegas Ute: Better Competition? Like Weber State? Like Michigan? Ha Ha Ha Ha. The only funny thing about that comment is that Michigan is way worse than intially thought. Even then they kept the game close and almost beat the Utes at the end. Don't even get me started on Weber State. But whatever the schedules are way too similar.

To Whipping?: obviously you did not even watch the game did you. Anyone who watched the game saw a whipping. Take away three plays for Air Force in which the Coug defense lost focus, and it was way more than a whipping. By the way didn't the yewts need a last minute score to beat Air Force! Ha Ha Ha See ya Saturday! You better hope Austin Collie doesn't fire up the Cougars until the second half, then you may have a chance to contain the Cougars.
Long Time Cougar | 2:23 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Ute fans, you had better not get too confident! You never know what the BIG GAME will provide. That said, Even though I am a BIG BYU fan, I think Utah is slightly better this year. They have won their games largely on defense and for the most part their offense is lackluster.

BYU on the other hand has a lackluster defense. Utah has been lucky to win two of it's games, games that they should've lost. But they didn't-so hats off to them.

I still think it's possible for BYU to win if they play one of their best games and don't give up the ball. Go Cougs!!

RE: Whipping? | 3:29 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
BYU not very good? What do you call utah? What say you about your wins over Michigan, Oregon State, Air Force, New Mexico, TCU? Dominate? Answer NO! Utes were on the receiving end of a lucky call, lucky bounce, or poor clock management by the opposing team. If a 10-1 BYU team is not very good, then I say an 11-0 utah is horrible!
If | 3:30 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
If BYU beat the U they have a very good chance at a BSC invite. Only two teams per conf can go to a BCS bowl and the Big 12 and the SEC have a lot more than 2 in the top 14 and BYU is ranked ahead of both the best Big East and ACC teams.

Re: accuracy and Vegas Ute | 3:38 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
You should wait for the rankings to come out before spouting off. BYU is at 14, jumping 3 spots. What you don't understand is that BYU was ranked higher in the human polls, but a weak SOS had them lower in the BCS. The SOS gets slightly better with a win over a good Air Force team, so the BCS score goes up as well. A loss by North Carolina and an even weaker scheudule for Ball St helps move the Cougars up, as well as an idle Michigan St. So there are your three spots, only one of which was a result of a loss by a team ranked higher.

A lot has to happen next week, but that still puts BYU in a position to make a BCS bowl with a win at Utah. Boise has to lose to Nevada or Fresno St. and a couple of other teams ahead need to fall, Oklahoma St being the most likely. Michigan St. is the only team that might jump ahead with a win over Penn St, depending on the quality of the win. Stranger things have happened. Note: No ACC teams in the Top 16.

Whotah's defense this, whotah's offense that, blah blah blah blah blah. I believe your little team has had better D stats than ours the past two years also. Let's see somebody please remind me what the outcome of those games were? Oh yeah, we won both times. *Yawn*

Please try to come up with a new angle as to why you might win and don't use "because we're in the top 10" since that doesn't mean anything based on the narrow escapes whotah has had this year. You're not a legit top 10 program and everybody knows it.
stumblefall | 4:44 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Also note that there are no Big East teams in the top 16 (Cincinatti is # 19 and Pittsburgh is # 20). There are four teams (almost five with Ball Stat at # 17, and they WILL move up if they beat Central and Western Michigan) that qualify to be BCS busters, EXCEPT for the arbitrary "only one gets to go" rule. The winner of the BYU-Utah game will absolutely qualify, but I think that Boise State will be the one that gets to go if Utah loses. As a BYU fan, I will tell you that I am already relieved that we got to 10 wins. Sure, I'll take a Ute victory if we get it, but I think we are the third-best team in the conference and I will be happy with those standings.

Super conference? I love it, except for two things. First of all, everybody needs somebody to beat. And you get a lot more respect if you have a conference championship. So you've got to find another three teams or so. And they need an agreement that they get an automatic BCS berth if they are better than the ACC or Big East.

Zombie Nation | 9:46 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
As much as I would like to see the Cougars beat the Utes Saturday...I can't see it happening. BYU is challenged by road games and hasn't played the same since the TCU loss. Bronco's demeanor has engulfed this team and they do play like zombies at times. I am happy as a fan with the wins but I am dreading this Saturday.

Homefield, emotion and the pain of the last two losses to my beloved BYU will force us to another bowl game our program is beneath.
re: stats | 9:58 p.m. Nov. 16, 2008
Exactly how "random" are those stats? and what do you think they mean? Let's look at quality teams played.

Air Force both BYU and Utah won, neither controlled the game Utah winning at the end, and BYU locking it in on late 4th quarter drive.

TCU. Utah wins with a bit of Luck (but , BYU was thumped soundly.)

Oregon ST. Utah controlled the game early, Oregon St came back, then Utah won on the leg of great kicker.

In all three games, Utah found a way to win late in the game. That is what good teams do.

BYU does not have another SOLID team on it's schedule. UCLA? Washinton? other MWC? nope. That said BYI has also found ways to win late in games that it looked like it might lose.

What does this mean? I think it means that BYU will struggle against a Defense that is faster, and stronger than perhaps any team it has played this year minus TCU.

BYU does not have the defensive strength of New Mexico or TCU the only two teams to limit Utah's offense this year. Face it they struggled with UNLV and CSU.

Utah 31
BYU 24

You will lose and your coach with the soft little conservative voice can give you the little speach. "This is just another game, No big deal" Start thinking of the excuses for losing, you will need plenty.
Ute fan | 12:44 a.m. Nov. 17, 2008
Every BYU fan tries to pretend that only Utah has had close games. Hmm last second punt block to almost THE worst team in pac-10, close agianst CSU UNLV teams that UTAH blew out. TCU the one BYU tries to make us forget ever happened because they got embarrassed. Yah utah beat them too. Close but if UTAH had been ready they wouldn't have let TCU surprise them in the first quarter, after that they got shut down. Sure UTAH choked on NM and Airforce but they won. They have never been whipped like BYU. Especially since it was by THE only good team they have played yet. Oh yah and look where Oregon state is now. They beat USC then #1 and we beat them. Utah has two wins against ranked teams this year BYU 0 and it will stay that way. No miracle pulled out of their butts in the last 20 seconds of the game the defense won't let them get close enough.
Go UTES!!!!
