Gay rights rallies nationwide over California ban

What good does a pep rally do? The voters have spoken, and it seems to me that
the gays should just start having bake sales and car washes to try to raise the
money to get it on the ballot again and see if they get beat a THIRD TIME!

C.W.- Rallies led to religious rights, women's rights and black rights
among many other changes. Read some history my man (or woman)!
Marriage is rooted in religion. We are a country that, according to the constitution, practices separation of church and state. However, the state is using religious-based arguments to withhold rights from people who may or may not agree with each religion's premises.
You know, at some point in history blacks, American-natives, women and many other "different"
people were denied rights base on religious arguments. Gay right to marry is just the latest issue that shouldn't even be voted on. It doesn't hurt you, the individuals involved or our country!

Voters have spoken is only good until the next election. Equal Rights is a
long road change is in the air again, America is back on path. California is
just took one step back but American will take two steps forward.. Hope will
keep us going.

In the 1950s and 60s there were always people telling the advocates of civil
rights, "You're too soon," "You're too late," or
"You're asking too much." But there's always another
chapter of history to be written. It would be wrong to remain silent when we
see injustice.

Every time a protect marriage proposition has appeared on a ballot, Americans
have voted to say marriage is between a man and a woman. The only time gay
marriage has become public policy has been at the hands of activist judges so I
believe if the courts continue to overlook the will of the people we will have
to put pressure on Congress to enact the process for a Constitution Amendment to
make it the law of the land. But until it happens my hope is that the US Supreme
Court with take up the issue as it is starting to impact inter-state issues and
I am sure with the current make up of the Supreme Court they will also put an
end to this assualt on traditional marriage.

Gays/Lesbians should pay special tribute to Mitt Romney for allowing them to
marry. He could have vetoed the bill when he was governor, but instead, he
signed it into law. Eventualy all the states but Utah will probably allow Gay
marriges.

What the Cathoiics and the Mormons FAIL to see is that not everyone WANTS/NEEDS
to live by their values. People who are born non-heterosexual NEED the same
CIVIL RIGHTS afforded to everyone else in America. Sdaly given the years of
persecution suffered by Mormons and Catholics you would think they would be
understanding, compassionate and tolerant. Instead both religions have chosen to
espouse HATE and bigotry, hardly the Teachings of a kind and Benevolent God or
his son, if in fact they exist. It's really sad that we just can't all
respect on another and get along. It's sad that religious groups have a
NEED to feel superior and FORCE THEIR believe systems on the
"minority". Pathetic.

marriage supporters are so sure of their legal grounds (civil rights issues) why
are they marching around so much. If they believed so surely that it is a
"rights" issue then its follows that California courts will overturn
the VOTE OF THE PEOPLE!

Given the opportunity, I'd bet a majority in utah would not let me vote,
because I tend not to vote like them. For sure, they would not let me drink
beer. I should imagine that my freedom to speak would, if it could, be curtailed
when it comes to speaking against the tyrant church. They'd prevent me from
doing most anything on Sunday. I'm glad that at least some rights are mine
by default, rather than a gift from and at the discretion of the local mob. Too
bad more things could not work that way.

Back in the 60's "marriage" became passe', unnecessary, and irrelevant outside the context of religion! "Who needs a piece of paper?", we ALL said.
In my opinion, "marriage" IS a religious term and should not be used outside the context of a man and a woman....think of another term...other than marriage...oh, you already have one??..then what's the point??? Must be a MONEY thing...ah yes, the almighty something for nothing motivation disguised again as the irrelevant, and selfish fulfilment of self and satisfying of your own selfish desires. Marriage is the LEAST self-serving thing that can be done in life because you both give up yourselves in the rearing of CHILDREN.
It is NOT your civil right to get more of my tax money for nothing.
It is my understanding that 44 states voted FOR the ban, so redouble your efforts, without the violence, cz thats just hurting your cause, and try again next time, like all the rest of us have to do, in pursuit of those goals important to each of us individually in our lives.

Gays have every right to vote for same gender relationships, just don't
call it marriage. It is interesting to me that should the gays have won there
would have been no protests, no threats, no intimidation by Mormons or others.

"Reality Check": Thinking that same sex marriage will not impact
anyone else besides gays is either incredibly naive or a total misrepresentation
- either way, it's not reality. And it's not a civil rights issue,
it's never been about "hate" and "bigotry", it's
been about simply defining what marriage is. In CA, same sex couples have
domestic partnerships/civil unions which afford the same benefits as marriage
(and if civil unions don't, then I suggest spending your efforts
strengthing those laws). So why upset? Why want marriage to begin with? It
appears gays only want marriage to force their values and behavior on society as
a whole. The vote of the people is that they do not want that.

Civil marriages predate religious marriages. The first official marriages
(approximately 527 A.D. as codified by the Justinian lawyers) were civil
marriages among wealthy Romans which had nothing to do with religion.
It wasn't until the ninth century that the church was involved in any capacity in marriage. From this time until the 12th century church involvement only consisted of blessings and prayers during the marriage ceremony. Around the 12th century, priests began to involve an agreement made in their presence during the marriage ceremony.
English weddings in the 13th century among the upper class became religious events but the church only blessed the marriage and did not want to be too involved in the actual ceremony or have any legal commitment. It wasn't until 1563 when the Council of Trent required that Catholic marriages be celebrated at a Catholic church by a priest and before two witnesses. And it took up until the eighteenth century before the wedding was a religious event in all countries of Europe.

You may have temporarily denied me of my rights but I still have the freedom to
love a man and you can NEVER deny me that though I know it makes you sick to
think that. I also have the freedom NOT to believe your in your sick LDS
religion and its dangerous agenda. A recent conversation on the Signorile radio
show with a Mormon woman shows the extent of the mindlessness you Mormons allow

Nobody has temporarily denied you of your "rights"! You can get
married any time you want just like everybody else. True, you have to follow
the rules like everybody else. You can't marry your first cousin, your
sister, your dog, and you can't marry a girl that's too young, and you
can't marry a woman that's already married, you can't marry a
woman if you are already married, and you can't marry a man. You have the
same rights that everybody else does.
Gays don't have the "right" to redefine marriage. Marriage is an institution that affects all of society, especially children. There are many laws based on "morality" included child pornography, prostitution and gambling. Society uses the democratic system to decide where we draw the line. Gays lost in California, but they weren't denied "civil rights." Please stop making that illogical argument.

Why don't you get your own thoughts and opinions rather than taking the
robotic thought process that comes from the "Gay Community"! Your
argument with religion vs. Gays is tiresome. The previous writer was absolutely
correct in saying your comment was illogical. Do not act like your rights have
been denied, or that you are persecuted. Believe what you want to beleive, do
what you want to do (within the law), but dont expect special treatment, or for
other "communities" to change their beliefs or give up what thier
rights.

This issue makes me mad only because it's actually an issue. It's just
a way for Republicans to make sure that the rednecks show up to vote. Are two
gays getting married going to hurt anyone? Do you think George Bush really
cares? And don't give me that nonsense about the sanctity of marriage. I
think a 60% divorce rate and "Who Wants to Marry a Midget?" soundly
bury that argument. I don't care if gays get married or not. It sure raises
the ire of the rednecks though, and I do enjoy that.
