Thanks for the coverage. Though I may not agree 100% with you, it is insightful to consider all the view points. I just look at the long term trend of coaching tenure at USU and wonder...is 3.xx years on coaching tenure really going to build anything? I think Coach Guy is doing a pretty dang good job this year. To beat a team (Hawaii) that was in a BCS game last year is something special. I say give him 1 more year...if he can't get bowl eligible within those next 12 months, then I would agree it might be time for a change. We also should consider scheduling some likely W's in our schedule. Getting beat up every year by having a tougher schedule than U of U or BYU doesn't help us prepare to beat them. It is demoralizing. We were right in it with Boise State until a few issues, and then the guys felt they had no chance. Give them a few winnable games, build their confidence and then lets see where we go...but what do I know. I am just a pure breed Aggie. Born in the Dorms. Living in Dallas..Gotta love it.
USU ought to look to Robert Anae as a replacement. He has strong local ties and experience at Texas Tech. It would be a great thing for Logan.
This is year four of BG football and we have seen 10 out of 12 games this season. The truth is BG is not a successful HC. Like it or not, a HC is "successful" OR NOT depending on his W-L record and ranking and bowl games. Obviously BG has not been successful and four years is enough time to show what he can do. Or rather what he can not do. BG may very well be a good person and a good man and have good intentions but he is paid to win. It is silly to say let us let him have his fifth year of his contract to finally turn this ship around and get us to a winning record and a bowl game. Silly because it is a recruiting fact of life that if you want him around for the 2009 season you have to give him more years to his contract(extension) so he has credibility that is absolutely critical when you are recuiting players. Not only should he not be here in 2009 HE SHOULD NOT BE HERE FOR MORE YEARS AFTER THAT. Thanks for the effort BG and goodby.
Please no more Brent Guy, enough is enough! He should have been let go in his second year when we got blown out and shut out of most of our games.
I disagree with the writer of this article. The last thing the Aggies need to do is start the cycle over again. That's why they are in this mess in the first place. Hiring and firing every three years is a recipe for losing games, losing depth, losing recruits and losing fans. Coach Guy has built depth and is playing mostly under classmen. Anyone who has watched the program over the years can see the program is on the cusp of turning around. Give it a chance to happen. Scheduling games that are certain losses has got to stop for a while. Boosters who insist on playing BYU and Utah every year are asking the program to fail. In my opinion, Coach Guy is the one element that needs to remain stable.
Can you say John L. Smith?
I have been an Aggie fan for a long time, Brent Guy was a bad choice from the get go, being a nice guy doesnt make him a good Head Coach, The Aggies would be insane not to offer this Head Coaching Job to Gary Andersen, and I am not saying he would accept it because I am certain Coach Andersen will have some big time offers in the near future but at least try to hire him. He would bring a level of toughness, discipline, and more importantly he is one of the top recruiters in the NCAA, I saw him listed as RIVALS.COM as number one none BCS recruiter in the country. Makes to much sense to me at least try to hire him. GO AGGIE'S
After La. Tech beats Brent Guy this weekend, I think he will be put out of his misery.....FINALLLY!!!!!!!
I agree, schedule down and get some wins going into conference play. We can't keep hiring and firing coaches every 3-4 years, you just can't build a solid program. We have a good foundation, let's give BG one more year to turn it around.
Lets hope Guys's replacement ins't JLS!!
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks with Guy. I do see the point that he either needs to be reupped or let go, in order to have recruiting credibility. I am tired of hire and fire though, so I am for maybe a 2 year extension. That is just me though. I honestly don't know how firing and starting over does anything for our team or school.
You are right that it is time for Brent Guy to go. His schemes don't work and most of his players have quit playing for him. You are very wrong that USU should not expect to win against every team on his schedule. They now have the facilities and conference needed to compete. The hardest game each year would be the BCS team, but they should have a chance to win against any WAC team or mountain west team on their schedule. Anything short of that is selling the Aggies short, something I know the slc media loves to do.
He has one year left on his contract at $250K per year. If I'm a recruit, I want to be pretty confident that the same coach will be there for the next 4-5 years. Give him his lottery winnings and move on. If I was Utah State, I want the top coordinator from BYU or Utah. It helps you and hurts them in one move. Plus they are already tied into the recruiting network. Also, look at the top High School coaches as coordinators. They know how to win and work with young men, and also know who to recruit.
I love the article; I have been saying FIRE GUY & DICKEY for the last two seasons.
If you know football you can see that he goes into every game, every season with the same game plan.(with exception to BSU were he finally made a change at QB- too bad the backup didn't have more experience) If the opposing team studies tape at all they know what to expect. I don't thing Guy is smart enough to make the changes necessary to win games.
Ask the senior players after the season is over what they think and I guaranty they will say bring in a new Coach and you will get better recruits and win more games. IT CAN NOT GET ANY WORSE!
UTAH'S DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR GARY ANDERSEN...END OF SEARCH!!!
Another thing to consider: in the first two years, Guy was dealing with off-field issues with athletes (that he did not recruit?). Marijuana, rapes, etc. When this occurred, he kicked them off the team. Now, we have not heard of a USU football player getting into trouble for the last two seasons. At least Guy turned that aspect of the program around. Since then, the Aggies have slowly improved on the field. I say give him at least one more year to prove himself on the field - especially if he gets one or two more wins to finish out this season.
USU should hire the best recruiter they can find. Sounds like Andersen is the guy top non BSC recruiter. Head coaching experience. He knows how to recruit the state of Utah, something USU has failed to do for years. He was proven as a very good fund raiser when he went to SUU and in one season turned that program around. Andersen has one of the top defenses in the country for the second or third year in a row, he obviously knows how to motivate his players.
With Ron McBride's success at Weber St maybe he'd be the top candidate. Or, as said above Anae.
I think that Andy Ludwig would be a great fit for USU. Anything to part ways with a coach that calls for a running back to pass on 3rd and 1.
Fire Guy Hire Andersen, its a no brainer, not sure we would be able to get him, but I think he is the best fit for our program.
