Keep an eye on local taxes

The Deseret News, which has supported virtually every tax and fee increase over the years, is now calling for restraint on the part of local governments.

However, just this year, the News supported the Zoo bond, the Aviary bond and a $40 a year fee increase for mandatory recycling in Bountiful. After all, the News argued, each of these taxes taken independently only cost taxpayers a few dollars a year more.

In past years, the News has supported multiple RAP taxes, taxes for recreation centers, school bond taxes, new transit sales taxes, etc., etc., again because each tax taken independently only cost the average taxpayer a few dollars a month.

Unfortunately, the cumulative effect of these few dollars a month adds up to many hundreds of dollars a year for the average taxpayer and they go on and on and on.

The News death bed conversion to the cause of tax restraint is a day late and millions of taxpayer dollars short.

@Good Grief: Apparently the DN has finally noticed the golden goose is dying.

I love this...residents who over the years have fought any commercial development in their respective cities are the ones now on the hook for property tax increase. Why? Because their cities' live and die by residential building permit revenue. Take a look. Cities that have had a diverse portfolio in terms of land use development are the ones holding their own.

Obama promised no tax increases, only on the rich. (he defined rich >250,000/year). I taped him saying it on the tv.

Maybe we could all just purchase a little less gubment "service". Now is a good time to shrink as much out of control government as possible.
