Most confident that Obama can fix the economy

Obama Cannot | 12:35 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Obama cannot fix the economy. The economy will fix itself. Obama can only help create an environment where business can flourish and laws are upheld. If Obama tries to "fix" the economy, he will do more long term damage than good. Increasing taxes on corporations & businesses will not promote job growth, it will promote outsourcing where foreign governments give huge tax breaks to businesses. Spreading wealth to those who didn't earn it, will not encourage those people to become productive. Look at those who win the lottery or inherit lots of money, the vast majority squander it away and end up being poor in the end. Government handouts and increased taxes on those who promote real growth, will hurt the economy more in the long term.

They didn't ask Utahans. Most Utahans would rather see the economy worst that it was during the Great Depression than to see Obama succeed.

hey anonymous | 1:14 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
What is a Utahans? I don't believe most want to see him not succeed. Where do you get your data? Did you poll all Utahns?

Count me among the skeptics. High business taxes, big and inefficient government, more entitlement programs, bailouts of industries and individuals that made poor business and personal decisions, exponential individual tax rates, greater union power, and protectionism. Those are not the seeds of an economic resurgence. Luckily, their inevitable, painful, dismal failure will jerk the Obamatons back to reality.
Anonymous | 1:17 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The economy will not fix itself unless the Federal Reserve is abolished. Come on people do some research on the FED. It isn't FED at all. It is a private bank and we feed it like a monster. Read "the creature from Jekyll Island" Watch the Money Masters. DO SOMETHING that will educate your minds instead of reading all the dribble that comes from the main stream!
Timberwolf | 3:45 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Way to go again Deseret News, nothing but stories about Obama off the AP wire. Yes us witless sheep will no doubt buy into to the rosy assesment that our new hero will save the American economy first thing as soon as this leberal sosialist gets his hands on the controls. Not! The damage done to our system of government by the handing over our monetary system to the likes of Paulson and Bernake cannot be underestimated. Just watch as they finish the looting of the American Taxpayer that was started many years ago under the so called federal reserve system, next stop depression and the new world order? Don't believe me? just watch as the markets finish their implosion and then a call by congress telling us we now have to join all the worls currency as one, thats right just like in 1929, the insiders caused the problem and they'll give us their solution but we may not like it, Wake up folks it's time to end the Federal reserve system and go back to hard currency!

to anonymous @ 12:40am: That says it all right there. If that's the common belief in Utah, then there should be no surprise at how the rest of the world treats you in Utah.
I laugh | 4:59 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
at the economic illiteracy out there. Politicians do not "fix" an economy. They get out of the way so the economy can recover from their meddling. The current meltdown is a result of politicians telling the private sector to ignore the laws of economics (and they provided a way through Fanny Mae to do that). Now, that things didn't exactly work the way they wanted, guess what? They are blaming the private sector!!! Amazing. Government got us into this mess and now we have voted for MORE government to get us out. Scary indeed.
Well said comrade! | 5:03 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Obama is a communist plain & simple. His form of government controlled economics has failed time & time again, yet "communism" & its ugly step sister "socialism" re-hatch in the minds of the next lazy, know nothing generation.

Left/liberal minded American's consist of 3 categories;
1. Aristocratic, elite individuals looking for someone to rule over & "save". This group consists of self-proclaimed intellectuals - academics/college professors (former pot smoking hippies from the 60s), media elite & left coast old money.
2. A hopelessly ignorant peasant class looking to be "saved" and ruled over with hands stretched out sayin' "gimme" "gimme" "gimme" all the while refusing to accept personal responsibility for their own destinies.
3. Small groups of narrow minded self-indulged individuals that find sympathy in the morally void left wing judiciary. These individuals attempt to impose their minority will upon the majority with irrational judicial rulings and uncivil, disruptive behavior. (ie homosexuals & gay marriage).

Mr. Anonymous @ 12:40 please come forward in 4 years & dare to have this same discussion! We'll see who will be saying "I told you so"!
Stimulated | 5:18 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
All will be better!

China announced a 586 billion dollars stimulus package for the world.
Fantastic!
Lets see.... there are 6.7 billion people divided into 586 billion dollars that's $87.46 per person.
Sweet- Stock market got real excited.
But then the Chinese said this half trillion dollars would come from invested American securities,
Our part of the $87.46 dollars will be .12 cents.
Cant wait to get my check-
I might buy some bubble gum.

Tax breaks for the wealthy do not necessarily go into job creation. Much of that money finds homes in overseas accounts and tax shelters. President-elect Obama's plan to increase taxes for the top five percent is a good one. However, a president alone cannot do all that needs to be done. He is relying on the help of his economic advisors and the American people.
liberal Larry | 5:44 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The Bush/Cheney administration inherited an economy, and country, in good shape. It took incompetence on a grand scale to get us into our current pickle. With a minimum of even handed, adult supervision, I have no doubt that Obama will get us back on the right track. What I find amazing is the fear mongering by conservatives, they seem very invested in Obama's failing, it's very sad.
yes he can | 5:54 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Once Barry begins his "rule" he can, and will only make things worse. Another 25 billion bailout for the automakers? Don't do it Bush!
Insane liberals and their most loyal constituency, the MSM, will blame the republicans just like the sub prime lending mess.
I say to bad for these industries that have mismanaged their businesses to the point they expect taxpayers to bail them out. If their is going to be another bailout then wait until Obama and other radical liberals take control.
NOBAMA | 6:41 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The majority of people wish for a simple solution to the economy. Like someone who develops heart disease over a long period by ignoring a healthy lifestyle they would like a magic pill to cure them immediately. This event has been a long time in the making and it will not be corrected by Nobabma. It is more likely that the effort to placate people with government give aways disguised as stimulus packages will just extend the problem. We need to rid ourselves of debt and that is going to be bitter medicine and it will take a number of years to work. Everything else is a smokescreen. Nobama does not have the answers!
Geeze | 6:53 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
To Anonymous 12:am: BULL! That is the way the dems/libs treated Pres. Bush throughout his tenure as president. For someone to want what you said is to wish harshness and ill will on everybody in the world. To you I say BULL, again. Now that being said, the Supreme Ruler, Mr. Obama, has indicated that he will do everything opposite of what Pres. Reagan did, who, created the largest, and longest lasting peace-time growth ever recorded. The new Supreme Ruler, Mr. Obama will do every thing to create hardships so he can be seen as the great Savior....

To paraphrase Rudyard Kipling "When you can keep your head when all about you others are losing theirs, perhaps you just don't understand the situation"! As for myself, since I've given up the audacity of hope, I feel much better.
Handouts | 7:01 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Sorry folks. Obama has no chance to deliver on all of his promises. All of these entitlements have to come from somewhere.
Al Hawley | 7:01 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Obama will make level headed, considered moves and do his best. This, in itself, is something new, which we've not experienced in a long time.
Not Drinking the Kool-Aid | 7:04 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Buyers remorse will set in fairly quickly and thinks will only get worse. Obama had no solutions that were more than theoretical and unworkable in real situations. It is a case of theorizing about a better world and using means that will only make things worse, because there will soon be gross errors and abuses of the American people. People who home in this false messiah will be devastated. Think Lion King and Scar, then you see what Obama will do.
CougarKeith | 7:15 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Have to agree with "Well said Comrade", Obama is a Communist/Socialist plain and simple. I hope we who think so are wrong and he becomes the greatest President ever, but I am affraid it won't happen. As for the guy who lives in "Utahan", those people in that place must not know what the "Great Depression" was, because they surely wouldn't mind Obama being President of their tiny little country/State/County, or whatever it is? Most people here in Utah aren't happy about Obama either, but we will take him over the Great Depression any day, as long as he doesn't cause another one!

Maybe we shouldn't be too worried about what the rest of the world thinks. They are in bigger trouble than the U.S. I'm still looking for this new blood Obama was talking about. So far, all I see are Clinton retreads. Remember, Clinton had a Republican congress that acted like conservatives. The truth is, government will not solve this problem.
Just a question or two | 7:27 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Can anyone explain just what we are to hope for and what changes were actually proposed during the election? I heard BO say all that stuff, but have no idea as to what he meant by it. And I think soon the American people will wake up wondering just what they voted into office.
Earl | 7:40 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Obama nor anyone else can "fix" the economy. To believe he can is the equivalent of believing in the Tooth Fairy. What he *can* do is make it worse by continuing the current policy of injecting huge volumes of cash into the economy. His promise to continue with the bailouts tells me he's going to make things worse.
Cats | 7:43 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Obama will not solve anything. This is a global economy and it will eventually solve itself. The fact is that anyone who has ANY knowledge of economics knows that the president has almost nothing to do with the economy. The best thing he can do is just get out of the way and let it fix itself.

Unforunately, I'm afraid Obama and his people will implement a lot of socialistic "reforms" that will prolong the problem just like FDR did in the 30s.
"Most are confident" | 7:44 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
That's because Obama hasn't done anything yet, other than making pie-in-the-sky promises.

Once he raises their taxes they'll sing a different tune.
Incidentally | 7:46 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The stock market is down more than 10% since election day, including a nearly 200-point drop today.

Apparently the professional money makers aren't very confident President Obama will be able to help the economy.
sn | 7:50 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Of course they didn't ask the stupid Republicans of Utah. The Utah Republicans voted for a loser, but this should not be a surprise. They voted twice for George W. Bush, the biggest loser ever. Others were smart enough not to vote in McCann and Caribou Barbie.
Re:Al Hawley@ 7:01 | 7:51 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Level headed and considered?
And what do you base this upon?
Since Obama has no record but extreme radical liberalism. I base my opions on what he actually says. He will be a disaster for a teetering economy and will not fulfill any of the ridculous campaign promises he made.
He won't cut taxes for anybody, but he will blame Bush for everything under the sun becuase that's what radical liberal losers always do. And like the good sheep democrats and the MSM are you'll fall right in line as always.

Tell Me | 8:07 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Do you have to be a racist to be in the republican party? Do you have to be a negative thinker to belong? Do you have to have any certain religous convictions to belong? Do you have to have a set amount of positive assets to belong? Do you have to have been living in a cave the past 8 years to belong? Do you believe it is better to lie than to tell the truth to belong? I'm not too sure about your requirements. Please respond.

"Obama cannot" (12:35) you should run for office. You are right on!
"anonymous" (12:40) and "xscribe" (1:56) You guys are typical liberals who have no tolerance for those not of like mind. Read the article- Republicans are twice as likely to be optimistic after the opposing party wins an election.
I am a white, 6th generation Mormon, conservative who is extemely proud that our great country would elect a non-white (who I did not vote for) for president.
I'm guessing you guys also don"t like Mormons since you don"t like this great state of Utah. There is no room for predjudice of any form. We can all do better.
By the way Utah's economy is usually at the top of all states due in part to cnservative values and principles and it's industrious people. Being a "right to work" state doesn't hurt either.
K.O.Y. | 8:14 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
I forgot to mention that I hope Obama succeeds. I think he is smart and careful. If he goes to far left he won't get another term. Any movement to the left will be bad for our economy and our country.
Obamas kids | 8:15 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Hey Mrs. Obama has been looking into two private schools for their two daughters. Did any of you think that the Obama's would send their young ones to a public school? No freakin' way! Public schools are for YOUR children not elitist like the Obama's.
The USGS has just annonced their is an estimated 3 to 4+ BILLION barrels of recoverable oil in North Dakota and Montana. I'm sure Mr. Obama will do the right thing the for the american people and immediately start the process of extracting this oil. hahahahahahahahah...
Anon | 8:22 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
7 out of 10? Wow, are people really that gullible? Politicians fix the economy? Hmmm... don't know if I believe that one. How bout the government keep their noses out of where it doesn't belong and let the market take care of itself?

On a side note. It is funny to see how both Dems and Reps use the same tactics. When Bush was in office the Republicans complained abouth the Democrats wanting Bush to fail. Now that Obama is taking over the Democrats are whining about the Republicans wanting Obama to fail. Blah blah blah. What a bunch of mindless robots Americans have become. Quit paying so much attention to the talking heads.
RedShirt | 8:23 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
How is it that Obama expects to create jobs when businesses are leaveing the US because of taxes? We have one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, and we expect businesses to remain loyal and stay here? Unless Obama plans on cutting tax rates for all businesses or eliminating all corporate income taxes, I don't see him helping businesses.

Also, how is it that he can expect to cut taxes for the mythical 95% of americans (even though 40% do not pay income taxes) without reducing spending?
How Interesting | 8:23 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
After 8 years of Bush bashing, the Deseret News now begins what appears to be a new era of positive spin on the media preferred Obama. IT'S THE MEDIA, STUPID!!!
re: sn | 7:50 a.m. | 8:38 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
I'm just wondering...if Bush is such a loser, why was he not voted out of office after his first term. How in tarnation did the 'biggest loser ever' get voted in TWO terms if he is such a reject?! Consider the possibility that the alternative was WORSE. I shudder to imagine J. Kerry or A. Gore having been president for the last 8 years. YIKES, YIKES, YIKES!
America the beautiful | 8:38 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
And how will Obama stimulate our economy? Tax the profitable, (incentive killer) Stop the drilling? (loss of high paying jobs and more dependent on terrorist owned oil.)
Please someone tell me what his plan is. I'm waiting to see if I need to produce or wait it out. No, really, What is his plan?

Even if Obama was successful there are so many people invested in wanting him to fail that they will shade his successes in bad light. Conservatives and Liberals have to learn to play in the sandbox! Come on people we are all Americans.
Obama's Friends Causes Crisis | 8:51 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
This is not the worst economic crisis since the great depression. It is the worst crisis since Jimmy Carter.

Under Carter we had double digit inflation, unemployment and interest rates. This was caused by high tax rates and high oil prices.

Obama promises to increase taxes and he has already moved to shut down some domestic drilling.

This is the second comming. The second comming of Jimmy Carter.

Ken Lay of Enron fame defrauded millions by cooking the books. He is in jail.

Fredrick Reins, Jamie Gorelick and Jim Johnson cooked the books at Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac and received millions in incentive pay they did not deserve. They also bullied financial institutions into making bad loans to people who could not pay them back causing the current financial melt down.

Where are they now?

Fredrick Reins advised Obama on housing issues.
Jim Johnson headed up Obama's VP selection committee.

Friends of Obama caused the economic problems we have today. They were warned in 2005 of the pending disaster. If they didn't know it was coming they should have.

They were either unbelievably stupid or malicious.
We have just given the fox custody of the hen house.
Broken Promises | 9:03 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Interesting reading from Janet Hook & Peter Nicholas... look up who they are if you don't know. All of Obama's promises to "overthrow Washington's partianship", hmmm, looks like he's bringing in long time staff from previous administrations and letting lobbyists do their normal thing.

Looks like the same old stuff will be going on for another 4 years, except with an extreme liberal twist. Broken promises already - are we surprised?
Dave | 9:04 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
how stupid all of you will look when you reflect back on that dark day in history when we elected this fraud for President. Fix the economy? You can't be serious! It amazes me how easily convinced the American public is by our media. The media by no means portray's the truth, they have thier own agenda, and all of you people who were so naive as to vote for him because of how he was portrayed will hopefully be smart enough to realize you catastrophic mistake in electing this crook.
He can help if .... | 9:47 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008

Ah-bama can help if instead of raising taxes, he reduces taxes.

Raising taxes will push the econimic dagger deeper into the heart of the American economy.

RE: TELL ME @ 8:07 | 9:52 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
No. You have accurately stated the requirements of the Democrat Party.
Thanks for asking.
Thanks Nobama | 10:08 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Your comments are right on. Profligate spending, among other dumb mistakes, has caused this problem. There is no magic cure, only strong medicine. Do we have the will to take it? I fear that we do not and will not until we end up with the painful stagflation of the Carter administration or worse. Low taxes, balanced budgets, accountability (not bailouts), and sensible governmental regulation (not oppressive over-regulation) are and important part of the answer.

On another related note, why of why did we ever let the politicians get away with putting social security collections into the general fund instead of requiring them to be used for their intended purpose?! We would not be in the fix we are in on social security if that had been done way back when. This crushing problem will have to be addressed. It will take strong medicine to fix it, but I don't see anyone with the will to do it.
Dear Dave | 10:14 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
I AM the media and and nobody I work with in radio, or television or my friends at the newspaper received a memo telling us what the media agenda is.

Your conspiracy theory is silly. Every single media person I know wants to get the story right every time. They make mistakes but there is no agenda.
BobP | 10:21 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
And when Obama fails to make good on his promises the rest of us will turn on him and rend his regime asunder.
Dave, He CAN fix it. | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
He will. And then how stupid many of you will look when you reflect back on that dark day of ignorance in your life when you refused to support the greatest leader of this generation. It's literally amazing how people can't see that words like "crook" and "catastrophic" have already been applied, accurately and aptly, to the Republican party, for 8 years now. Obama isn't really any of those things yet--he hasn't even taken office yet. So save your judgments for if he actually does something to deserve it. Which he won't. There is no WAY he is going to be able to exceed the lowest approval ratings in HISTORY. Even if he tried, he couldn't. Bush is worse than Nixon. Obama is worlds above them both.
Bush already is catastrophic and a crook. He's been messing up for the better part of a decade.
Obama won. It's so sad to see that Utah republicans are so used to winning over the last two elections that they are such sour, bitter losers over this one. Will they even be able to admit it when Obama is able to execute his job competently? I doubt it. They're too proud.
