While I do agree that some art depicting God can be inappropriate, I do feel like we can be far too formal and stuffy on this issue. My biggest problem with most pictures of God is that he is always portrayed as Anglo. There are many excellent pictures of Christ that portray him with African features, Native-American, etc. These kinds of paintings are also found through-out my home. I get a little frustrated sometimes with the ultra-conservative formality that exists sometimes in our culture.

I have also had non lds family members comment on the art that we tend to display and they are always turned off by it.They say Christ looks like he is mean. I like the fact that the article brings up these subjects but look forward to the day when there is more diversity and less stuffiness.

I know there is a boundary line, but some people think if its not harry anderson or something else like it that is wrong, and this is something i do not agree with.

I meant to add this to my comment. There are several "multi-racial" Gospel art type kits available online. There are not done by lds artists but are many are wonderful. Many Christian Churches are now using these, and they are completely reverent. There is also the "African-American illustrated bible" which is also wonderful - if you want to find a wide variety of pictures online you can check out "pictures of Jesus4you"

ok.... so what does the picture look like? You wrote an article about a picture but where is it?

I remember reading in a holy book something about 'graven images'.
Doesn't this apply here?

Not that you can tell a product by packaging. Comparing Mormon art to Catholic art is like comparing St. Peters to the LDS Temple in Ogden. I cam't come up with a great Mormon writer. There is a LDS pulp friction.

Blessing, even rich blessings are in store!

Interesting comparison

Interesting comparison Anonymous. Comparing Catholic Art of the same time period as the Mormons within the same geographical locations and similar population spread might be a more accurate comparison. The Catholic Church doesn't build St. Peters type buildings anymore and hasn't for a good long while. Mormons weren't around when the Medici family in Italy propelled art to some of it's highest levels. The Catholic Church has benefited greatly from it's long opportunity to collect art. There are fine artists within the Mormon community and a few of those artists will last the ages. More and better artists will come along as time passes, but encouragement is important in developing the level of inspirational art.

Art in the eye of the beholder

The Book of Mormon isn't even good fiction. And neither is the Book of Abraham. Even your Moroni statues are fiberglass and your Christus statue in the Visitors Center on temple square is a copy.

Anonymous sneering must be really, really gratifying.

I find it very interesting that there are so many anti Mormon comentators who take the time to read "Mormon Times". Life must be otherwise pretty drab for them.

The bashers that are so caustic about LDS art might want to take a turn at it and see what they come up with. And if you compare today with Catholic down through the centuries a person truly shows their ignorance. The comments by Interesting Comparison could be read again with some thought given to learning something.

It amazes me

that people who are so disgusted by mormons, our art, our lives, our views, our beliefs, everything about us, are always reading and commenting on our articles. Strange to say the least.
