Wow, so much for change.

Emmanuel has mob ties. So much for cleaning up the corruption in government!
GK from England | 12:56 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
This is a 'Black' week in American history. I can't believe there are so many gullible Americans who really believe Comrade Obama is going to make a change for the better. He reminds me of Tony Blair (left-wing UK Prime Minister from 1997-2007). His smooth talking and promises got him elected and we have just seen the worst 10 years in British society, particularly with regard to moral issues, which have been mainly due to the left-wing policies introduced by the Labour Party. America has just made the same mistake that the UK made in '97. Obama IS far left and will cause further division among the citizens of America by giving unfair and unjustified power to minorities!!! Obama's supporters will cry foul about comments like these, but, like the mainstream liberal media in America, they will not tell you the whole truth about Comrade Obama.
Political Prophet | 1:11 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Barak Obama is a dead end for our country. He will be assasinated before the end of his first term.

Comrade? Assassinated? Mob Ties? You guys are pathetic. Time to figure out that the way to win an election is no longer with tired hyperbole, fear mongering or character issues that either don't exist or no one cares about. Focus on real issues and the right might resonate with people again.
Anonymous | 4:13 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
America spoke and they spoke loud and clear. The Republican party as it is at this time is completely irrelevant. No longer will people stand for a government open to white males at the top. Barack Obama is an intelligent, charismatic inclusive leader who ran a campaign that brought more excitement and greater commitment than has ever been seen in recent history. The whole world is celebrating and America is being seen in a better light already. I couldn't be prouder. If this country is to continue with a two party system. The Republican party must undergo some serious change.
Change is good! | 4:25 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
President Bush and the Republican Party are Christian redneck terrorists who still believe in slavery.

Don't you all get it yet! It's 2008 and we've all moved on to a more transparent world. You are only kidding yourself, get over it the BEST man won on the day.
Charles Stewart | 5:02 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Obams's acceptance speech was about unity and most people, including my family, really liked it. But when I heard he had appointed Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff I new Obama was lying. "Words, just words." Emanuel is one of the most ultra-left wing liberal, most partisan, deceitful, lying, demagogues in the history of our country. As chief of staff he will have tremendous input about the choice of judges. What Obama is rings so loudly in my ears that is impossible to hear what he is saying. "Pastor" Wright may indeed get his wish. At least partially. Obama and Emanuel et al will damn America. Yes that will be a change from Pres. Bush who asked God to bless America.
Realist | 5:22 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Maybe you would rather have a dead Mac and a idiot palin presidency?
What happened? | 5:48 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I thought Obama said that he was for bipartisanship? Hmmmm???
Eugene | 5:50 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Being a true blue patriotic American and staunchly conservative, we must give the president elect his due respect. He won the election!

We as conservative Americans must support him when he agrees with our positions, vigorously but respectfully oppose him when we disagree and pray that he governs from the center since America is essentially split down the middle in political ideologies.

The pendulum will swing the other direction if President Obama and the expanded Democratic congress rule from the far left with a heavy hand. The 2010 congressional elections will be a thermometer of the next two years.
Irgun Group | 5:58 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Hmmm? Rahm Emanuel's father was part of the Irgun militant group for Palestine. Just another connection to anti-American groups, if you know what I mean.
Grow-up | 6:03 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
"Great start not", "GK from England" and "Political Prohet", do you plan to stay bitter for all four years or can we expect you to grow-up anytime soon.
So Much For Change | 6:14 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Wasn't President Bush criticized for cronyism? With every person mentioned being from Chicago/Illinois or being a Harvard buddy, sounds like the cronyism is getting worse. So much for change.

Political Prophet: what a terrible thing to even joke about. And you weren't joking.
liberal Larry | 6:15 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Isn't nice to exchange the fear of the Bush years, for the hope of a new president. Let's see if the curmudgeonly conservatives can let go of their resentment and regain some of the optimism that makes America admired around the globe.
Disappointed American | 6:15 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
With every speech and podium touting change, the first choice in his inner circle of leadership is a Bill Clinton disciple. Oh, how we have been deceived. I believe America will reap its harvest of broken promises much sooner than it expects. We need to keep this unprepared president-elect's feet to the fire along with his almost veto-proof congress and senate.
Tired of this negative crud | 6:18 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008

We should never mention killing someone.)
I don't like Obama but I would never encourage loons.)***********************************
His celebration and revival election party reminded me of a black church meeting. Everyone jumping up and down and feeling the Spirit. But the good feelings ended quickly when the world markets began looking into this new presidents desires for tax and spend and American isolation on the World Trade markets and NAFTA. Also his desires to withdraw American forces from Iraq and whatever else he plans to do in Afghanistan or Pakistan. Remember: I will do whatever it takes to get Bin Laden. When the market dropped almost 500′ points I knew then that we dont have to worry about a Democrat controlled Congress or a Black president. The world is now out of any presidents or Congressional control, ask Bush. And those poor black people that were crying and weeping for joy will wake up to the harsh reality that Mr. Obama is no Messiah or Moses, he will not fill their gas tanks and make their mortgage payments, because the World Trade Markets wont let him, go ask Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.
USMC Retired | 6:46 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
So now all the doom and gloomers come out with all their fear mongering. Look you bozos, you have been listening to too much talk radio, and other proponents of the extreme right. Youre sounding like McCarthyist. Its about time you started doing your own thinking. Do some reading; listen to the facts (from both sides). I am a Utah Conservative Republican and voted for McCain. But the election is over. Now is the time for ALL Americans to put their passions to bed, stand up and be counted as true red blooded patriots and stand behind our president elect. Mr. Obama has been elected by the majority of the people of this country. He has made some pretty strong commitments. Lets give him a change to prove it. You know, when he starts being updated with what is really going on in the White House (Briefings, intelligence reports, etc.) you will begin to see a different man. I will support this President on the issues I agree with, and express my dismay on the ones I dont. Until then lets help this country heal the division created by a hotly contested election. God Bless American.
Brother Chuck Schroeder | 6:51 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
President Elect Obama & "HIS" TEAM will cause this as well. What many people outside of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia may not realize is that coal is one of the two main fuels we use to create electricity in this country (the other is natural gas). Thus, when Obama drives the coal industry into bankruptcy through taxes to save an environment that is not as fragile as it is worshipped, we will suffer and suffer immensely. Obama knows this is so. Therefore, prior to his election he warned consumers that if his anti-coal policies were to be implemented electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. What happened to all the love for financially burdened middle-class Obama campaigned on?. Our Founders loved nature but they did not worship it. Yet today, lovers of nature often turn out to be worshipers of it as well. While Obama is by no means the first person to hold this exaggerated view of nature, it is understandable that he does, particularly because environmentalism has long provided cover for Marxists and Socialists the world over. We cannot worship nature and remain free, we can only worship nature or remain free.

Mark my "WORD'S."

It's true.

Civility means "you have to know how to win and how to lose". GOP lost because they had to, from Bush policies to McCain compaign organization and choices.
The better organized team won. So, let them do the job first and start criticizing when they start the real job.
Just mentioning Emmanuel doesn't mean there is no change. You cannot change everything. There need to be some continuity and some experience added by some new aspirations. The team will certainly be a mixture of new and old; that is exactly what change will mean.
KJ | 7:28 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Give him the same chance the Left gave Bush. ZERO chance! And we can start attributing all the worlds ills as "Obama's fault" next year. It's going to be fun. Let the jabs begin.
Pathetic | 7:31 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Funny how so many people on here are already judging an entire Obama presidency on the invitation to one appointment. He's not even president yet. I know the GOP is only slightly further from divine inspiration than the church, but things were much better under Clinton than Bush2. Try to crack those minds open just a little and give the man a little time to work. Pathetic.
Linda in Illinois | 7:33 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Obama was elected to be our President and although I did not vote for him, I will support him as our President.

As a conservative LDS living in Illinois for 12 years, I am very concerned with the terribly corrupt political background that Obama had as his training ground. It is my hope that Obama will prove to be a leader who will put his country first, rather than being overly influenced by special interest groups.

At this point in time, all we can do is to be positive and get behind our leader for the next term, while remembering that in the coming years we have the opportunity to vote for our representatives in the Senate and House.
markets decline | 7:34 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008

it is tanking again today!

/It is all Obamas fault!

Hey! that felt GOOD.
RE:Political Prophet | 1:11 a.m. | 7:38 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I'm kind of surprised the comment screeners allowed a death threat against the president elect to get through....I guess we can see where this paper's sympathies lie!
Geezer | 7:41 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Obama will do fine, and his team leaders are good at working with others of different views. If Republicans want to isolate themselves further, rejecting the Republicanism of Eisenhower and Reagan, that's their choice. But Gov. Huntsman is choosing a different route, stressing moderation.
C'MON PEOPLE | 7:57 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Im sick of reading negative comments, LIKE OR NOT he is the next President, you SHOULD think about getting people united for one common idea A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE, OUR COUNTRY!!! we dont have that now, well... it is time to work for it!!!

Stop speaking non sense and WORK!!!

...Dismayed??? your freedoms will be stripped from underneath you and you will be dismayed??? Moral issues will be crammed down your throat and you will be dismayed??? Your taxes will be increased and your income distributed to others and you will be dismayed??? wow, I feel better now! I guess we'll just stand like dumb sheep and be dismayed. I'm sure that will help. Sheeesh
Go America | 8:07 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I am a conservative through and through. I did not vote for Obama but I agree that America has made it's choice. I will give respect to Obama because he deserves it. I will not be like many who have demonized and disrespected President Bush for every move he has made. I hope and pray that our country will have peace and prosperity. We will wait and see.
Concerned | 8:11 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
To JJ:

You are right about one thing, NO ONE is concerned about the ties, at least until they find out how it adversely affects them. It will be too late by then.

His ties to those around him are real. Do you think that those who funded his campaign are not going to look for a return on their investment? I know of no shrewd businessman who is not looking for a return and they will as well.

Obama is not moving this country to the middle, he is moving it decisively to the left. In Oregon, a moderate Sen Smith, recently thought by the Dems as a Sen that would be easily converted from Rep to Dem, was voted out for someone far more left of moderate. Obama did not want a moderate in congress, he actually campaigned for Merkley so that congress would be less moderate and more liberal. Smith was very bipartisan and worked with Obama on serveral occasions.

If Obama is truely the candidate to unite the country would he not seek people of GOOD character who are bipatisan to work with? His plan is to silence the right and unite all the leftovers.

To RE:Political Prophet 7:38 a.m.

Words are important and so are LACK of words. I do not see the words that say "Political Prophet" would kill Obama. I believe they are merely making a prediction.

There have been one assasination plot foiled and another person arrested have a gun close to Obama. The threat is real.

I do not like Obama and do not want him to be assasinated, but it is a real possibility.
Alex | 8:28 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
One potential appointment is mentioned, and suddenly it's "so much for change" and "so much for bipartisanship." IT'S ONE APPOINTMENT, PEOPLE! There's also been rumor of Colin Powell being in the Administration, among DOZENS of other positions yet to be filled. Wait until more positions are mentioned before this banter begins.
WinSum | 8:31 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
As a Republican I still beleive in giving our new President a fair-chance. I just wish the Dems had done the same the past few years....Their talking points of "the 8 failed policy years of George Bush" never felt like bi-partisanship to me.....However, maybe....just maybe....they want what they themselves were willing to offer.....???

GWB | 8:48 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
"markets decline", you say "The stock market fell almost 500 points yesterday on news of Obamas election, it is tanking again today! It is all Obamas fault!"

I suppose reality doesn't matter, but with headlines like:

CNN: Number of Americans filing for unemployment insurance reaches 481,000, those continuing to receive benefits at 25-year high.

Fox: NEWS Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch yesterday flagged "extremely challenging" times for the global media sector in the coming year, after a deteriorating international advertising market caused a sharp fall in first-quarter profit and a cut in forecast earnings.

Bloomberg: Macy's, Target Monthly Sales Fall.

Bloomberg: Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus Group Inc. said sales sank 27 percent (even with Palin's big purchases:)

I guess it is easier to blame Obama because it supports your preconceived notions, in spite of other relevant facts.
Re: C'mon people | 8:50 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I'm not sure where you are living, but it getting people united for any common idea will never happen. This is an extremely divided country and always will be, so get used to the negativity.

Just like the Bush haters can't let go and even give him some credit, Obama haters will never give him a chance. That's just the way it is.

Obama is the down fall of America.
Utah | 9:20 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
There are many times that I have been told to leave Utah if I do not like the type of people elected to this hate filled state.
I do enjoy reading the comments on the desert news, with it being a church news paper most of these comments must be from good standing people of the church.
When the church leaders ask its faithfull to love your neighbors and to be good examples of what a christian should be like. LOL
The true examples are here in the comments.
If you do not like the leaders of this country then leave. I for one will stay in Utah and wonder how so many people would support people like Butters and say such hatefull things about your soon to be President?
KJ | 9:20 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Unite? Never. It's Obama's fault from here on..
Pete | 9:23 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Americans don't know what the heck they are doing. McCain and Obama were dumb people to pick for this race. Americans nowadays are a bunch of dummies running around without 2 cents worth of a brain. I think Americans today were all dropped on their heads as babies. I think we are in for stupid results for all our mistakes. Good morning America--your GONNA need it!
And after 4 years... | 9:23 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Vote Mitt Romney in 2012! :)
Re: USMC retired | 9:24 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
McCarthy was right. Communist had indeed infiltrated many institutions from the highest levels of government, i.e. Alger Hiss, to Hollywood. McCarthy was a great and courageous man for never wavering and the documented evidence of his assertions have been proven spot on and accurate.
As for getting behind our new leader, it has been said before but is worth repeating, I plan on supporting Mr. Obama every step of the way. Just like democrats supported Mr. Bush.
Agree | 9:47 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I also am a conservative republican (and LDS) and voted for McCain/Palin. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with the direction I think this will likely take us. But I can't condone any talk of assassination. Let it go!

I agree with several comments about supporting our leaders. Agree with his politics or not, he'll be the president for at least four years. We should recognize the need to be subject to presidents, rulers, etc. and obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. (to paraphrase an LDS article of faith.)

Of course we, as citizens, have the right of free speech and can vigorously oppose issues upon which we disagree. If President-elect Obama does things we disagree with, we are free to (and should) speak up and oppose (in legal, civilized ways).

Yet on the other hand, we'd also be well-served in supporting and praying for him than continuing the tired bipartisanship that so many of us have come to loathe. At least respect the office.
He could always call you up. LOL | 9:57 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
To: So Much For Change,

"Wasn't President Bush criticized for cronyism? With every person mentioned being from Chicago/Illinois or being a Harvard buddy, sounds like the cronyism is getting worse. So much for change."

First, a transition team is a transition from his campaign to the White House. He wouldn't pick any random person off the street, who he has never met, or known. This is why the majority of the team is made up of people he knows. He doesn't have time to start all over and get to know new people.

That's not cronyism since they have the experience to serve on the transition team. Cronyism means he would appoint friends and family without any regard to their experience. What do you want? Him to pick up a phone book, randomly flick through the pages and point at the first name he sees and say "so and so will be the Chair of my transition team."

He's already vetted these people, has worked with them and new their responsibilities include what they have already been doing on the campaign. Some will go on to serve in the White House while others won't but this appointment was wisely handled.
Anonymous | 10:01 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Democrats - for years and years we had to listen to your hatred and holding Bush accountable for every little thing that was wrong in your life. You are constantly name calling anyone who says something that does not bow down to you. You make ridiculous comments like Bush believes in slavery and then shriek like a banshee when someone says something a little bit off the wall about Obama. You want unity now. Why couldn't you have cooperated a little bit under Bush? Does the golden rule need not apply to a democrat?

The hypocrisy and the sheer hatred that the democrats have displayed have me in chills.

Be prepared for Obama to be severely critizised
Amulek | 10:03 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I did not support Obama. I will work in two years to get Repubicans back in office. However, I do respect what he has accomplished. I never thought I would see a black man in the office of President of the United States. This is truly an amazing development for our nation.

Gestapo | 10:05 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I have an uneasy feeling about Obama. As seen with events that have occured in the media, if you say anything bad about him or any other Democrat, you are subjected to "being punished" by his people or the Democratic establishment.

Hilarious you repubs think Obama was going to ask Todd Palin or somebody to be his Chief of Staff, it's one appointment, deep breathes.
