Cracks forming in GOP stronghold?

I'm registered independent but vote conservatively. Republicans better get there act together and get back to there conservative roots. They are plummeting fast. For the past 8 years they talked out of both sides of there mouth and grew the government faster than any liberal Democrat has,all the while spending our tax dollars like it was going out of style. They did a far better job looking like Democrats than they did Republicans. This election is, if nothing else a protest vote against the way things have been operating in Washington. If Republicans want to obtain any power in Washington again they best start doing more listening to the voting public and keep the promises they made the last time this country gave them power.

Don't worry folks. After 4 years of Obama the nation will be ready for a "change".
CHSgolfer | 5:40 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I couldn't agree more with "Independent" comments. The Republicans deserved to lose in 2006 and 2008. Unfortunately this just left the door open for socialists. I hope the folks in Summit County, i.e. Park City, will like the Obama tax increase. But who am I kidding? Of course they will! They are Biden Patriots! It is only their patriotic duty to pay more tax. And besides, it is only "chump change" to them. I wonder if this "Patriotic Duty" will affect their reliance on luxury disposable income of tourists. I know I won't be able to ski Deer Valley this year.

They must have moved here from California along with all the bad drivers that now live in Utah.

We are over taxed, over regulated by both parties and they steal OUR money and freedoms. It is time for another Boston Tea party.
Protest Vote | 6:26 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
It is a complete embarassment to me that Utah had the highest percentage of support for Bush/Cheney in the nation in the previous election.

Their only power base left are the snake handling evangelics in the south and the war loving neo cons in the intermountain west.

Was our support misguided?

Utah republicans your vote is taken for granted by people who in my opinion probably consider you cultists.

It was easy for me to vote against McCain Palin. I wanted to send a message.

Don't take me for granted and I am not a cultist.

I am active LDS and proud of it.

Sign me a former Republican.

Hi Indy. I am a registered Democrat but usually vote conservative on social issues, like right to life, pro marriage, gun rights, etc. Actually isn't it meaningless to identify with a party anymore since they only placate to buzz word issues as they make out with the media? The left radicals won thanks to no small effort of "Catholics". As a Catholic I say this with a heavy heart as I watched so many of my Catholic Bishops, priests and brothers flock to the pro-abortion, pie in the sky proletariat. Next, what's to stop the devout LDS from joining these ranks?
Republican, But | 6:28 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The conservative roots are part of the problem. In attempting to maintain conservatism, the party has leaned too far into the extremeist mode. In insisting upon Christianity, it has tried to define it for everyone, attacking religion on all counts as not being "Christian" enough. Look at the treatment of Mitt Romney, at the attacks upon Obama's minister, in accusing Obama of being friends with terrorists. How is that Christian behavior? It is more like a witch hunt.

There is an apalling lack of kindness and tolerance of other religions right now that I think the Republican party has fostered by being so far right.

The party has espoused fiscal conservatism while the cost of these foreign wars has nearly ruined the economy.

Cronyism with high party leaders and unethical business leaders-from Enron down to the investment bankers have ruined our trust in wealthy members of the party.

McCain is too connected with the Military.

I was appalled at McCain's dirty campaign. Accusing every Muslim of being a terrorist is no more realistic than accusing every Christian of being a white supremicist. And saying Obama has terrorist friends puts McCain into that camp.

Republicans--clean your house!

Proof is in the putting that one party rule is no different than Communism only with different names. Greed and poverty abounded in the past 8 years, for this country to regain self respect within or without the polticians need to rethink who it is that pays them and gave them a chance for office. They are elected to serve the people not gauge them
One thing is CLEAR | 6:45 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
For over nine years now the mainstream media has had George W. Bush in their cross-hairs. Heavily leftist, they have been relentless and merciless in their quest for the white house and for control of Congress. The strategy is simple: if you tell people something often enough they sooner or later come to believe what they hear. They threw two leftist candidates at him and narrowly lost both times(2000 and 2004). Meanwhile the public had become inundated with all the exaggerated foibles of GWB and anything GOP-related; all they now had to do was connect McCain with GWB and McCain was down ten points right from the get-go. Inundated with twisted B.S.long enough most swing voters said enough of BUSH and GOP (white house and Congress) and the rest is history. I have studied politics long enough to see this unfold like precision clockwork. All that remains now is to watch the leftist/socialist agenda of president-elect Obama and a terrible do-nothing congress reap damage on the nation. Where is my cave...I am sick and I want to hide.
Rick | 6:48 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I think that now is the time for Utah to really stand up and show what they believe in. We say we believe in the Constitution and that it was inspired. If we believe that, why dont we support it better? Why dont we support those candidates who really support it, not just give lip service? If we lose the freedoms and the form of government setup by the constitution, what will we and our children have to live with in the future? Isnt it time to get back to the constitution from which we have strayed so far from? I applaud all those that voted, especially younger voters, but please go read and learn about the constitution so that during the next 2 and 4 years decisions are made based on that inspired document.
Republicans Must Clean House | 7:00 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The Republican Party's emphasis on core values did not match up with its actions. Conservative spending went out the window with the cost of two wars. Cronyism with high ranking Republicans and unethical businessmen--from Enron to the banking debacle have caused moderate Republicans to feel greed rules the party instead of the rights of private citizens.

The party allowed its extremist factions to define it, with ugly consequences--I believe it has contributed to the religious intolerance that is so fostered right now. Calling one's religion into question as being "Christian enough" or "American enough" or assuming that Muslim friends are terrorists seems more a witch hunt than an emphasis on core values. To assume every Muslim is a terrorist is no more accurate than to say that every Christian is a White Supremecist. Some of us feel freedom of religion is at risk; certainly tolerance and kindness IS. While the media is somewhat at fault with this attitude, so is the Republican Party.

McCain ran a very dirty campaign with too much name-calling that really put me off.

I also did not trust McCain to cut defense spending or end these wars.

How will the party address these things?

Semantics are important | 7:10 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
It's interesting to me how 4 / 8 years ago, when the economy was better and people weren't so focused on money that the electorate felt passionate enough about values that the elected a staunch republican who spoke about God and values. Today, with economic woes threatening everybodies pocketbook, the election is all about the economy and money. In short, when things are going good, it's Ok to talk about values. When money is threatened, it's all about the economy. That smacks of a 'love of money'. If the economy was more important to you this election than the previous two and you neglected to understand the two candidates underlying character, values, and priorities, then you voted based on money. You're love of money was greater than your concern for character, values, and priorities. In the next four years, the US will reap what it just sowed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Reed, and organizations like moveon.org will promote an extremly liberal agenda, and I fear President-Elect Obama will allow, if not encourage that to happen. Just remember, wealth redistribution is a form of socialism which is a kissin cousin to communism. We'd better get our houses in order!
The way of the whigs.... | 7:39 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
If you looked the vote breakdown the younger voters voted en-mass for Obama. The republican party is the party of exclusion and will never again win a national election. They will go the way of the whig party.

Its time for Super Mitt to fly into Washington and turn the renegade Republicans around. He was able to turn the Olympics around--why not the GOP. Come down from Crypton Super Mitt and get the elephants organized and and relevant again.
Repub Faithful | 7:43 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
You need to lay a big part of the blame at the feet of Stan Lockhart and his ill-conceived and poorly executed "Ican" campaign. How stupid was that?

And in Salt Lake County Jim Evan's sniping was meanspirited and misguided.

Learn something from Obama folks.

Republicans need leadership that actually understands and can implement basic grassroot campaigning that gets everyone involved and generates excitement if they want to hold on to what they've got.
Cats | 7:47 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
This is all just part of the natural cycle of politics. The pendulum swings and this year it is swinging Democrat. The Republicans will regroup and come roaring back in 2010.

This is a center-right country--not a socialist, far-left country. It won't take long for people to realize that the Democrats are not taking us in the direction we want. These cycles happen to both parties and it will happen to the Democrats.

As Republicans, we will go back to our roots, regroup and be back big time in the near future.

Wow! It is amazing that some of the comments come from people who are very proud of their ancestors who crossed the plains in a covered wagon. I cannot imagine how the pioneers succeeded; what with all the griping, bad mouthing and woe is me attitude that I hear today. Maybe the pioneers made it because they had a common goal...maybe we today do not realize that our common goal is to make this country a better place. This might involve working together, listening to each other and together forming a consensus; maybe being more concerned for the wellbeing of our children and our neighbors than getting on our soapbox and spewing hate. Of course some like to rant and rave anonymously so they can appear as perfectly normal folks when in public. In which case; find a good therapist.
jim | 7:59 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The republicans lost because they went to the middle of the road. They acted like democrats. spend, spend, spend. When we get a conservative canidate people will rally around. I want less government, more freedom. Its sad when you cant tell a democrat from a republican.

The primaries have to be changed so that we dont have to choose from the leftovers of Iowa and new hampshire. We should have had a better choice, and obama would have not been the president elect.

I am a Mormon returned-missionary, BYU-graduate, and Active Duty military member from Florida who currently lives in Utah. I consider Utah a second home and I am proud of our Pioneer heritage in Utah. For many years I have always countered negative remarks I've heard from others regarding the social-political-religious landscape of Utah. One of the stereotypes I consistently hear from those not from Utah (or not LDS) is that Utahns (and particularly the Utah LDS community) are closed-minded and not accepting of outsiders. Given my personal experience as a lifetime Mormon, I know the Church teaches otherwise; that is, to love thy neighbor (regardless of whether or not he/she is LDS) and to constantly persue education. Despite Utah being a Republican stronghold, I hope Utahns and Mormons will take advantage of Obama's win to dispell these stereotypes. Regardless of how you voted, as an adopted Utahn, a Mormon, and a military servicemember, I ask you to stand behind our President-elect. He will need all the support he can get. Let's show the nation that we are Americans before being Democrats or Republicans.
kathyn | 8:09 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Obama won because most of us are so disillusioned about many things. I do think that most didn't realize that the Democratic members of Congress for the past two years bear a fair share of the blame for things going south. Both the Democrats and Republicans have betrayed our trust and we need to clean house in both parties. Unfortunately, right now the Democrats are riding high and are not about to get rid of corruption in their party.

We used to think of certain things as privileges. Now everything is a "right" and we are "entitled", whether we can afford it or deserve it. And we will flock to the side of whoever can promise the most. (But who pays for all of these entitlements?)
Alex | 8:17 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I love how people just assume Republicans will come back strong in 2010. Don't take into account that Obama might actually deliver and be a popular President, no, not at all...
Republic Gone!! | 8:32 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Yeah, Pres. Elect Obama won!

We own the white house, the senate, the house & soon the judicial, nothing can stand in our way now!

Now lets finish cleaning out or converting the remaining neo-con republicans!
Grover | 8:37 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The moment of reckoning is less than four years away. After the debacle on Tuesday, the Pubs have no one of stature to run in 2012 EXCEPT Mitt. If the "base" shows him the same contempt they did in this years primaries, the Utah love affair with the Republicans could well be over.

It's a sad day when voters don't turn out because your choice isn't on the ballot. It's actually laziness. There is a thing called write in.

The only time your vote doesn't count is when you don't vote so it can be counted. ALL VOTES ARE COUNTED. ususally

Massachusetts is turning Republican--Right! Utah is not going to turn blue unless a lot and I mean a lot of liberals move here. SL county might turn blue along with Park City but until the DNC moves their platform back to some type of value system most Utahns agree with it won't happen.

Wake up Utah. The Republican Party is glad to have your money and vote, but they don't accept you. Mitt Romney would have been a better candidate than John McCain. The reason the Republicans didn't nominate him, HIS RELIGION! Talk about conservative values all you want but the it is now obvious no member of the LDS Church can gain full acceptance into the GOP.
Dump GOP | 9:38 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
It's time for a new direction by dumping the GOP and start the RCP. Reagan Conservitive Party.
The GOP is full of McCains, or worse like Hatch and Bennett. Other than McCains incredibly heroic military service, the Hatch's and McCain's of the GOP are tired old party guys comfortable with bashing their base and rubbing elbows with Kennedy, Pelosi, Reed, Dodd and all the other same old tired liberal hacks. They are without any new ideas or of any known ability to adapt to a changing world and a dynamic economy.
The Reagan landslides were just that because his ideas appealed to all Americans. That we are a great and free people because of our humanity with respect for life and liberty. Without life and liberty, nothing else matters.

For me, a principal concern with Obama is he will appoint extreme left U.S. Attorneys and judges on all levels. They will continue the pattern of legislating from the bench with little regard for the Constitution. Other agency and govcernmental appointments have tremendous power to set rules that will negatively impact our freedoms.
You get what you deserve | 9:56 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Voters will get what they deserve. The scion of the Cook County Democratic machine. The most corrupt political organization in U.S. history has sent their man to D.C. and given the corruption and vote fraud that they are famous for, there's no telling how many of the democrat votes in battleground states are bogus. You have your president elected by fraud and you'll be lucky if his thugs will ever allow another honest election.

RJA | 9:59 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I could not agree more with the comments by JCC. During my drive halfway across the country in the aftermath of 9/11, I had a lot of time to think about my previous actions regarding support of Presidents I did not agree with. I hope and pray that regardless of who is in the office, all citizens will support the President, no matter who is elected. I also hope that Mr. Obama meant it when he said he would be everyone's President.

Question: While I was raised with a hatred of socialism and/or wealth distribution, is it not similar to consecration and the united order? Obvious distinction would be inspiration, but beyond that...

Not looking to be flamed, just informed.

As a lifelong Republican it's obvious what happened in Utah this year. The blatant religious bigotry that the far right in the Republican party displayed against Mormons during the primaries was a BIG eye opener. It's hard to get enthusiastic about the party when it's clear that so many other members of the party hate you. I voted for McCain, but I don't feel very comfortable with the Republican party right now. I have a sense that many other members of the LDS church who are Republicans feel similarly.

GOP -the party of the stupid! | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Lookie here you faithful GOP members you vote the way your told to vote and what did you get for it, 8 years of the worst president in history of the USA. During the Clinton administration I paid much higher taxes and I expect that I will in this upcoming admin but you know what my lifestyle won't change one bit. I will still live in nice homes (sl county & MT), still drive a nice car, lovely holidays and use my credit card. My homes are paid for, my 06 & 08 autos paid for and my credit card bill and I only have one card is paid in full each month. KIds graduated from private colleges and with no student loans. I am laughing all the way to the bank, because I saw this problem coming with the laissez faire style of the Bushie, bad things were going to come. There is no quick fix for this problem. And you know what - I didn't make one dime of my good fortune in real estate or screwy juices, I made it in the market and got out in time.
Code talker | 10:28 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Big Surprise...Utah is not immune from being sucked into the "Change" mentality that is spreading across the nation like a bad virus. Just as Change is Obama's code word for "spread the wealth". So is "unity" the code word for conform to Obamaism or suffer. We will see more of these code words that sound marvelous but have solid roots in his left wing liberalism.
Math? | 10:38 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Lets take a look at the math. The Democrats are thrilled that in 1968, Humphry won 37% of the Utah vote. Now, in 2008, Obama won 34% of the vote. That is interpreted as improvement? That is showing a chink in the armor of Republicans? Is that why, when Obama states he will make our utility bills skyrocket, the Democrats cheer? That, too, is progress? My math is different from their math! It is going to be a rough 4 years before Jimmy Carter II can be voted out of office.

Republicans deserved failure. You became a stupidity magnet. Gone are the days of William F. Buckley. There is no intelligent discourse in the Republican Party.

I was listening to NPR. I found NPR after tiring of Limbaugh and drive by conservatism. NPR had call in lines: one for republicans and one for democrats.

What a great difference. As many republican callers were heard. Any republican could say their opinions without being shouted down or having the mics cut off unlike conservative radio. There were no accusations of drug use if the caller expounded a conservative view.

I call myself a liberal. I do this because I hate seeing any group singled out.

I live in the warm climes of California. I voted against all bond measures. I'm against big government. I'm not in favor of gun control. I believe there are too many laws in the land of the free.

I refuse to be part of a culture of hate or to be forced to walk a thin party line.

If I where a republican, I would be a RINO. I can be a liberal against higher taxes and gun control and never get bash because of my views.
What Can a Republican Do for Me? | 10:49 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
During the campaign, I never much from the McCain camp about what good ideas he had. I mostly heard negative ads attacking Obama for his former relationships. The Obama camp spoke to real issues that our nation is facing and the American people listened. Obama was the candidate offering solutions this time. Whether we like the solutions or not doesn't matter when the opposition has no solution to offer. Attacking another's character or relationships is an attempt to take the attention from one's own weaknesses and failures.

But that is all right with you because you don't think for yourselves! You shout propoganda like a well taught child!
Most of the comments in the "News" are made by mean spirited people who have nothing going for them in their lives!
Get a life! The reason Mitt lost his bid to be a candidate is because in other places around the country they realize that he is a liar with no moral courage! Not because of his religion, but because of him!
Not all Mormons support him nor his party! Some of us think for ourselves!!!!

Obama's 34% showing quite strong for state.

And that 34% are apparently those who haven't read the many deprecations of socialism in LDS literature. There are many researchers who cite evidence that the president elect is Marxist (e.g. "Is Barack Obama a Marxist Mole?" and "Another Obama Marxist") and supportive of the Communist goals of 1963 referenced in Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963.
