Cotton Bowl | 5:08 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
You're forgetting one important player, the Cotton Bowl. For many years, the Cotton Bowl was one of the premier New Years Day bowls. With a brand new stadium in Dallas, the Cotton Bowl is pressing to be included in the BCS mix. Adding a 5th BCS Bowl wouldn't be that difficult and could clear the way to include two more conferences as automatic qualifiers.
Great Article | 6:13 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
MWC is having a great year, no doubt.
Article correctly points out that that needs to happen consistantly before the conference will get national and BCS recognition.
Take care of business one week and one season at a time and good things will follow.

In the meantime it will help to toughen out of conference scheduling and quit whining.
Anonymous | 7:06 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The MWC should add a few solid football schools to help facilitate becoming a permanent member of the BCS. The most logical choice is Boise State.

The criteria for adding schools would include the size of the school's TV market and the quality of the football program. Other top choices include Tulsa, Fresno, Nevada, San Jose. The MWC should also cinsider dropping Wyoming and Colorado St. given their poor track record and tiny TV markets.

OK MWC, ti's time to step up and take care of business over the next three/four seasons. If we do that then they'll have to seriously think about adding us to the BCS mix. If we go back to mediocrity the next seasons and if we lose our non-conference games as we've done in the past then there's no chance they'll pick us up!

Adding new schools to the mix will only dillute the progress we've made in the past 10 years and won't add much of any value.
Re: Cotton Bowl | 8:41 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
There are already five BCS Bowl games. Adding the Cotton Bowl would make six.

Also, someone mentioned getting rid of Wyoming and Colorado State. That will never happen since they are charter members of the MWC.

The BCS is made up of all 11 FBS Conferences. This means it's no longer the exclusive fraternity it once was. Threats of antitrust lawsuits and congressional intervention put a stop to the exclusivity the BCS once was. It is entirely possible for the MWC to gain an Automatic Qualification. In fact, according to BCS criteria, if the MWC were to outperform, say, the Big East over that 4 year periord, the BCS would be forced to either add the MWC or drop the Big East as an AQ Conference. If the MWC were to finish ahead of any of the other five, then they would be guaranteed an AQ since the BCS could not drop any of the other five since they all have contracts with the BCS Bowls. The Big East does not.

yes it's all about the money/tv markets.
Utah Cougar | 9:06 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I agree with SLCguy, it's all about money. We are just too small of a market to be included in the mix. The only way that we will be able to be somewhat tantalizing to the BCS is if (I know it's a long shot) San Diego State starts winning. They have the largest market next to BYU. The addtion of TCU a few years back was a good move because that gave us some of them Texas TV sets. Mark my words, if SDSU starts winning we would see a lot more publicity because of all the money to be had in southern california.
BCS Bowls | 9:24 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Currently, there are four BCS bowls, plus the National Championship game, which is rotated among the four bowls every year:

Rose Bowl
Fiesta Bowl
Sugar Bowl
Orange Bowl

Adding the Cotton Bowl, would add a 5th bowl to the BCS mix.

The BCS should drop the silly automatic qualifier criteria and award an automatic bid to any conference champion that finishes in the Top 16. The BCS should also drop the silly "only two teams from any conference" rule. If there are 3 BCS worthy teams in the Big 12, but none in the ACC or Big East, too bad. If their champ doesn't finish in the Top 16, their conference doesn't deserve a BCS bid.

It may take a class-action lawsuit or a congressional investigation, but eventually the BCS will crack and be forced to level the bid selection process for all conferences.

A playoff is coming; it's just a matter of time.
Spencer | 10:15 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
One small reason why I now have some respect for Barack Obama. When asked what one change he would make in the sports world, he said "COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF." Keep it simple is my advice: 8 conference champions. NO 2nd place teams. 6 sites needed, just use the current sites, along with Dallas and either Atlanta, Orlando, or San Diego. Play December 24th, January 1st, and January 8th. Keep the other bowls, as only one from a conference would go in this system.
Adding & subtracting teams | 10:25 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
It's much easier to add a team to a conference than to kick a team out of a conference.

Conferences have governing rules that each team agrees, by contract, to follow. Unless a team violates those rules, it would be very difficult to force a team out of the conference without a huge legal mess. Wyoming or San Diego State would certainly sue the MWC for millions if any attempt was made to force them out of the conference.

Adding a team, like Boise State, is the only realistic way of altering the makeup of the conference.

There are already five BCS bowls. Adding the Cotton Bowl would bring the total to six.
Re: BCS Bowls | 11:17 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
There already are 5 BCS games:

Jan. 1, 2009 Orange Bowl
Jan. 1, 2009 Rose Bowl
Jan. 2, 2009 Sugar Bowl
Jan. 5, 2009 Fiesta Bowl
Jan. 8, 2009 BCS National Championship Game (in Miami)

Adding the Cotton Bowl would make 6, not 5...

And, really, this is all just wishful thinking. The BCS conferences have all the money, power, and prestige. No way are they going to share that unless they have to. And they don't....

Pray for a playoff!
BCS, SCHMEE C S | 11:25 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Until the elitist SEC and ACC fans and alumni give up their view that they are the only real college football champs, then the BCS will continue to be a beauty pageant. We need a playoff system to determine College Football championship. You hear that, SEC? A playoff! You hear that Big 12, PAC 10, Big East, ACC? A playoff! Let them play it off on the field, not in your own minds. Hear that Herbstreit, Corso, and the rest of the BCS fan club? A playoff!!!
I Think | 11:50 a.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The MWC should add Bo Diddly Tech. They would likely be 4th through 6th every year.
playoff | 12:07 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
forget conference champions, that rewards weak conferences.

take the best 12 or 16 teams, no matter what conference they come from.

weigh strength of schedule heavily, reward teams that are not afraid to play a tough schedule.
Who knew? | 12:15 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Finally, a sensible reason to support the guy! If only I'd known Barack made that insightful statement, I'd have voted for him for sure! His campaign staff was really slacking to not make that a key plank in BHO's platform and publicize it bigtime!

The campaign motto could be: "It's time for a change! Yes, we can!"

GO BHO and football playoffs!!!
A guy from Orem | 12:21 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Where is the NCAA in all this? In every other sport, the NCAA determines how the champion is selected. In division I football, they defer to something called the "BCS". It could be reasonably argued that currently there is NO college football champion, at least no NCAA champion.

When will the NCAA step up an take its rightful place? Or are they afraid that the power conferences will take their ball and go home?
Stirit | 12:23 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Why else did we elect Obama if he isn't going to fix this BCS problem?
BCS BOWLS | 12:33 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The National Championship game IS NOT a bowl.

Taken directly from the BCS site:

"The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a five-game arrangement for post-season college football that is designed to match the two top-rated teams in a national championship game and to create exciting and competitive matchups between eight other highly regarded teams in four other games.

The bowl games participating are the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl and the BCS National Championship Game which will be played each year at one of the bowl sites."

The BCS will jump at the opportunity to add a 5th bowl paying $17 million per team. Whether that will open the door for the MWC or WAC to become an automatic qualifier is another matter.

It's all about the money...

Watch and learn...
NCAA Football Playoff | 12:59 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
We already have a model for a successful playoff, just follow it, with some slight moderations, to preserve the bowls.

Start with a 16-team playoff.

Automatic qualifiers would be ANY conference champion that finishes in the Top 25 in both the Coaches and Harris Polls.

That could be as many as 9 or 10 teams, but would most likely be around 8 teams each year.

Take the next 6 to 8 highest ranked teams regardless of conference (combined polls) and have a committee seed the teams like is done for the basketball tournment, avoiding same conference matchups in the first round.

Play the first round on the first Saturday after Christmas at the homes of the higher seeded teams.

Play the quarter-finals on the first Saturday in January in the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose Bowls.

Play the semi-finals on the second Saturday in January in two of the quarter-final bowl sites.

Play the championship on the third Saturday in January at a one of the other quarter-final bowl sites.

This season's games:

December 27
January 3
January 10
January 17

Only a week later than this season's BCS Championship Game scheduled for January 8th, 2009.

The MWC needs to trade Wyoming to the WAC for Boise State. With BS in the MWC it would be absolutley one of the best conferences in the nation.
re: Playoff | 1:05 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
A couple of other modifications:

Like the BCS currently does with Notre Dame, give EVERY conference a piece of the pie, that is, every conference gets at least a $5 million payment, regardless of whether they send a team to the playoffs or not; Notre Dame and other independents would get a $500k to $1 million payment.
BYU 71 | 1:09 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
The BCS will never split the money-pie with the MWC or any other conference. It is all about the money. It has always been about the money. It has never been about the best teams playing each other. Those who have the money will never volunatrily share the money. Trickle-down economics has never benefitted the "have-nots" and the BCS conference are the "haves" and the non-BCS conference are the "have-nots". In case you have not figured it out, it is all about the money.
First Dude...err | 1:11 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
My wife would reform the system in three days, maybe four.

Cut the crap, MWC fans. When are we going to be happy with what we really are...a mid major conference. Sure Utah, TCU, and BYU are solid teams - but put any one (or all) in the SEC or PAC Ten and they are a 7-5 team at best. I know the PAC Ten is light this year, but this is a down year for them...You get the point
re: Orem Guy | 1:17 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
There is NO NCAA Div 1-A college football champion and never has been.

If you go to the official NCAA website, you'll find lists of NCAA Champions for every sport, EXCEPT, Div 1-A football.

The list you'll see for Div 1-A (FBS) is titled:

"Consensus National Champions"

and the column heading is

"Selecting organization"

scrolling down the list you'll find

1983 Miami (Fla.) AP, FWAA, NFF, USA/CNN, UPI
1984 Brigham Young AP, FWAA, NFF, USA/CNN, UPI
1985 Oklahoma AP, FWAA, NFF, USA/CNN, UPI

The initials stand for the organization that chose that team as national champion.

Starting in 1998, the list title was changed to:

"Bowl Championship Series" with the same "Selecting organization" column heading

scroll down that list and you'll find:

2007 Louisiana State BCS
2006 Florida BCS
2005 Texas BCS
2004 Southern California BCS

if you're pinning your hopes on Obama to fix this mess (or any other mess) you'll be sorely disappointed!
Rich | 1:54 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Maybe Obama can force the BCS to spread the wealth. His first choice probably would be to have the feds take over college football. Then there could be a fair playoff -- any school without at least 50% liberal professors would be disqualified automatically.
Automatic Qualifier. | 1:55 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Ok so we talk about jumping the Big East for an Automatic Bid. What about the ACC? They have one victory in 10 tries. The MWC has 1 victory in one try. And the WAC has 1 out of 2. Here is a breakdown.

Highest Winning Percentages By Conference

Conference
Percentage (Record)
Mountain West
1.000 (1-0)
Southeastern
.733 (11-4)
Pacific-10
.667 (8-4)
Big East
.600 (6-4)
WAC
.500 (1-1)
Big Ten
.471 (8-9)
Big 12
.429 (6-8)
Atlantic Coast
.100 (1-9)
Independents (Notre Dame)
.000 (0-3)

My proposal to the BCS is to scrap all automatic Bids. Take the best most qualified teams every year regardless.

Here are is the BCS top 10 right now. This is sure to change before the end of the season.

BCS Standings
1. Alabama 9-0
2. Texas Tech 9-0
3. Penn State 9-0
4. Texas 8-1
5. Florida 7-1
6. Oklahoma 8-1
7. USC 7-1
8. Utah 9-0
9. Oklahoma State 8-1
10. Boise State 8-0

clueless First Dude | 2:12 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Like you said, the Pac 10 is down this year, and the MWC is 6-1 against the Pac 10, with even winless-in-the-MWC UNLV able to knock off then #14-ranked Arizona State on the road.

The only really good team in the Pac 10 this year is USC who was soundly beaten by OSU, the same OSU team that Utah knocked off the very next week.

The reality is parity is hitting college football big time, and teams from non-BCS conferences are becoming more and more competitive every year.

This season, the top 4 teams in the MWC are far superior to the top four teams in the the Pac 10, Big Ten, ACC and Big East.

I know that's hard for the elitists to accept, but that's reality.
re: BYU fan | 2:20 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
No, the WAC should trade Idaho to the MWC for BYU.
the Solution | 3:00 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Obama's solution to the BCS mess will be to take 50% of the bowl revenue from the top 6 BCS teams, and divide the money evenly among the non-BCS schools, after taking 90% of that money to pay for planting trees at Division II and Division III schools to make them green.
Jack Rabbit | 3:04 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
MWC must dump Wyo. and replace with BSU, FSU or any western U than can bring a credible athletic program and more than 3000 jack rabbits to the tv table. The buy out cost will be less than the gain achieved by adding a credible athletic program to the MWC.
MWC | 4:52 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
Since the BCS is by definition a cartel (read OPEC), and cartels are illegal in the United States, shouldn't the BCS officials be arrested, tried, and put in jail?

Since there is no national championship in football, just a fake, made for TV competition designed to give a few people a lot of money, and the competition is rigged, why should I or anyone else care?

Actually, I don't.
Anonymous | 6:36 p.m. Nov. 6, 2008
I'd love to see the MWC get an automatic bid as much as anyone, but some of these ideas are laughable.

Two people at least have suggested the MWC swap Boise St for Wyoming.

Riiiiight.

There is not enough tequila on the planet to get the WAC executives drunk enough to agree to that one.

But hey, as long as we've got pipe dreams going on, can the Jazz also swap Jarron Collins to the Celts for KG?

the Big East Champion..right now, West Virginia at 6-2.

No way in heck would Utah ever get close to the Championship game. Big 12, Big 10, SEC teams with 1 or 2 losses would always trump a MWC team.

The day the MWC gets the WAC to trade Wyoming or Colo. St. for BSU (or Fresno ST. or Hawaii) is the day that BYU and Utah get into the PAC-10 or the Big 10/12. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. Like always, its ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Here is the IDEA | 3:13 p.m. Nov. 7, 2008
The WAC and the Mountain West should get the auto berth after the WAC champ plays the Mountain West Champ in a single playoff at the end of the season -- Big money for the two Conf. and exposure in a national televised playoff game plus how can they be left out - especially if the Cotton Bowl comes on board - Simple and fair and fun and just what we all want a chance to play a big game to get in the bigger game.

JustDan27 | 3:14 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008
Be nice if the WAC & MWC could be 1 Conferance, like how Big 12, SEC, ACC, etc. it could be called Mountain West Athletic Conference (MWAC). Sure both have 9 teams but bigger the better.
