Remember those good old days when we were more passive and we were being persecuted and kept our stance? Why are we so active now and persecuting other people when they will not and never change or harm our church?!?!
My question now is would President Hinckley had done the same?!?!?
Remember those good old days when men acted like men, and we fought against those things that are wrong and wicked, so we could protect our communities, and thus, our children from such evil and destructive behavior?
The scriptures say that "Men's hearts will fail them... in the latter days." Apparently, the homosexuality is not the only way men's (and women's) hearts are failing them... losing the will to stand up against the wickedness of the world and fight for what we have been taught, and know in our hearts, to be sinful and dangerous to our society and families, is also how their hearts are failing.
I for one am not giving up! VOTE YES ON PROP 8!! Please, for the sakes of your children.
Perhaps it is because you don't remember, a history book could have helped. 14 March 1860 House Report "Whatever differences of opinion may exist as to whether marriage is a civil or a canonical contract, the while civilized world regards the marriage of one man to one woman as being alone authorized by the law of God,"
Why now are you insisting it be something different...that is all the mormons are asking.
And me? I'm not even Mormon but bother reading historical documents.
Like the sand through the hour glass so are the days of our lives!!..Sad for the inactive/blinded LDS members who fight against the church..be aware of whos knocking on your door!!.
Edmund Burke said it best. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. People have the right to express their opinon. No one has the right to suppress. To vilify or target a group or religion for expressing an oppossing view is wrong. What is worrying about this proposition is that it has been left up to the state, not the country to debate. If one state supports the proposition, whilst another opposes it, then that state has an unfair advantage over another state. It seems to me that groups are targetting the wrong people. The federal government should be targetted, i.e. congress and senate, for not having the courage to stand up and be counted. They have chickened out and left it up to the states to choose.
Same old thing. Trying to bully people into changing their opinion. Can you bully the Lord?
I'm i persecuting people by standing for what i believe in?
Remember When says "Remember the good old days"...when women couldn't vote and were considered property, and blacks couldn't hold the priesthood, and a black couldn't marry a white, and girls got married at 15, and ?
Why is it okay for you to tell me how to live my life?
The misconception that people have about free agency is that they believe that they have the right to make any choice that they want to. In fact free agency is the right to choose the right. There is no justification is poor decisions. What sickens me about this propostion is that a minority is trying to force their poor decisions onto the majority and therefore justify their actions. People who target churches or groups for their stance on the proposition are making poor choices.
Please do not inject words in to what my quote, and then say that I said it. I never said (wrote) anything remotely like what your comment said.
That is called deception and lying. I wonder where you learned that trick. Now if you are going to quote me, THEN GET IT RIGHT!
Deception and "out and out lying" only shows how messed up your whole perspective is.
To the 1:41 poster,
Considering that under President Hinckley the church 100% supported proposition 22, I do not see where you come up with your bizarre question.
Did you listen to President Hinckley's talk at the 2003 First Presidency Chrsitmas Devotional? If your answer is no, than go back and dig it up.
President Monson is no more a supporter of traditional marriage than President Hinckley was. You might plausibly make an argument he has been not as strongly in support of it, although it would be not exactly correct, but to he definately has gone no further than President Hinckley.
The main article seemed quite biased. Their description of Proposition 8 was clearly biased.
Their failure to ever mention the full name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should be examined for its real motives.
Their calling it a "Salt Lake City based church" but failure to describe the Catholics as a "Rome based church" also is a major blow against their objectivity.
For those who did not get all the way into the SF Chronicle article, here is a revealing incident.
"Those words speak for Michele Sundstrom, 47, of San Jose, who has been married for 18 years and has five children. She and her husband gave $30,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign and put a sign on their home. But in response, two women parked an SUV in front of their home, with the words "Bigots live here" painted on the windshield."
I find the attack on free speech by the anti-8 crowd very disturbing.
John do a little research. The Catholic Church is not Rome based; it located in the Vatical which unto itself is an independent entity. The Church answers to no governement nor tries to influence one favored government over another; that is the difference.
The Cahtolic Church is the church of our savior which ministers over the world and people respect that. The mormon church ministers over the intermountain west and tries to bring the culture and teaching of this regionalized branding of christ and sell it to the world. There is a big difference in approach tactics and of course respect.
Thanks you John for pointing out the difference. BTW the Catholic Church is not well respected by the liberal bay area residents or media but then again we are on a sliding scale.
It's been awhile (my memory isn't what it used to be), but for those that say the scriptures don't address the homosexual issue: half the New Testament is written in Greek, and half is written in Hebrew. Than along comes Constatine and translates them into Latin, then King James translates them into Early English. Let's go back to Greek 2000 years ago. The word "Eunuch" in those days had a double meaning. Not only Castrated Male, but also Homosexual. Now, reread the New Testament and anywhere it uses the word Eunuch, substitute the word with Homosexual. You'll see what the Lord had to say about Homosexuals. I'm voting YES on PROP 8.
Just reading through all these comments and what it boils down to is in our history and the un-tampered words of God! Thank you educated commenters! I feel safe with you in the same world.
Here is the key issue that is getting everyone so worked up and giving the LDS a black eye. The Associated Press reported that President Monson wrote a memo directing LDS members to do all that they can to intervene and impact the California ballot initiative, Proposition 8. As a result, LDS members in California and Utah and other regions have gotten involved in an enthusiastic way. LDS members have provided the lion's share of the funding for "Yes on Proposition 8"; by one report, as much as 77% of the contributions, and have even gone so far as to organize phone banks in Utah (yes, I know the Church later decided to pull the plug due to negative publicity) to call Californians and push a "yes" vote. Californians have said the Mormon Church has a right to its own beliefs, but it should not try to buy an election and impose those beliefs on the entire state of California, where LDS represent less than 2% of the population.
So if prop 8 doesn't pass, does it mean that man cannot marry woman in california anymore, and that the church will be forced to perform sealing of same gender couples in our holy temples?
If that's the case, PLEASE vote yes on 8, you folks in California!!!
LDS members are estimated to have contributed 77% of the financial contributions to the "Yes on Prop 8 Campaign". Ladies and Gentlemen, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Please.
Because it doesn't really affect the doctrine and pracitices and even covenants of the Church, why can't we follow the "Golden Rule" as set out by the Saviour.
How would you feel if your (opposite gender) marriage is not recognized by the law?
