So I am going to be ignorant and say I've never followed the playoffs since Real has never been in them.

They are saying its a two game playoff. so what happens is Real wins game one, and Chivas wins game 2? do we go on a goal differential? what if its the same? could anyone please explain how the playoffs work?

GO RSL (I hope we can dominate in both)
re:justin | 12:31 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
they play two games, first here then in california. then they aggregate the total goals. (for example: 4-1 RSL win, then a 2-0 Chivas win, means total is 4-3 RSL) if total goals are even after both games, there is 30 mins extra time. If still tied, penalties.

well done lads. beat the goats!

I couldn't watch the game but wow, that is an amazing way to go in to the playoffs for the first time!! How the playoffs works is that the first round is two games and the winner is chosen through goal differential. The games after that are do or die like the NCAA tournament.

I Agree with Coach Kreiss, Real was not looking good last night and may be they didn't deserve to tie the game, but that's the beauty of soccer don't give up until the final whistle comes and that's what happen last night. The players still had some good looks and they took advantage of that moment.
I wish Real the best for the playoffs and I hope the can go as much futher as they can. Congratulations to the Real, this was a great season and Hope this season will help them for the next seasons to come.

Congrats RSL! Next week will ned fun. I have a question. Why only 3 teams from the west are in the playoffs, while 4 from the east?
WOW!!! | 7:51 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
A tie!!! How exciting!!! Were your mommies there to watch?
Tyler | 8:28 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
I am so excited that they made it to the playoffs! Jason Kreis has delivered as a young coach and the future looks bright for RSL.

Did anyone read the headline "Tie sends RSL to the playoffs" Beautiful! Tie and advance! How exciting!

No, but your mom was.

----------------------------------

5 from the East, actually. The league has decided to take the top 3 from each conference, and then the best two records left (wild cards). This way I guess there's some more tension in the playoff races.
Ugly Winner | 10:31 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
The DesNews has understated how awful and lethargic we were last night. Mathis set a new standard in uselessness, and Kreis was clueless about how to turn things around. Why then am I on top of the world today?!!!?
Climax | 10:45 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
The substitutions for Russell and Williams ended 55 minutes of sloppy and lethargic play, and allowed us to witness 35 minutes of dangerous, attacking soccer. The goal in the 90th minute was just the right touch of drama to cap off what has been a very exciting season.

Long live Real Salt Lake!
Exciting | 11:15 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
What an amazing game to watch. Incredibly dramatic. I think Real Salt Lake is rivalring the competitiveness of the Utah Jazz now. The best tie of the season that is for sure.
Why soccer hates you... | 11:54 a.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Because you are too ignorant to try to see why soccer is entertaining. Much like how I'm too ignorant to understand how people find watching a 4 hour baseball game for 15 minutes of action entertaining. You watch your world series, i'll watch my soccer playoffs, and we'll both be happy:)

Good work boys, every game at DSG is an ugly gut it out type affair. Way to stick to it. Can't wait for saturday! See y'all there.

Goooooo REal!!!

Wasn't able to watch the game but followed it on the radio. After watching the highlights today, it is clear that Nick Rimando deserved to be MVP for the game. The best player for the rapids was the ref (worst no call of the year!).

My GOAL sheet for RSL this year:

Be above .500 (10, 10, 10) --> Check (close enough)

Positive Goal differential (+1) --> Check (barely)

Win at home --> Check

Win on the road --> Unchecked, this is the one area that RSL failed at, although they played tough enough at end to make the playoffs.

Stay healthy --> Unchecked, lots of injuries which almost kept RSL out of the playoffs (Espindola, Beltran, Sturgis)

Establish a deeper bench --> Check

Bring in good quality international players --> Check, I credit much.of RSL's success to Morales and Olave. I've been in Bogota twice this year and always mention Olave - haven't met anyone from Colombia that recognized the name as someone who played for Cali. He was a great find.

Good Coaching --> Check, congratulations Mr. Kreis

Winning attitude --> Check

Strengthen the midfield --> Check (in spite of yesterday's game)

Shore up the defense --> Check
Hey Dave! | 12:34 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Well done RSL. Can't wait for Saturday.

I just read the two playoff games will be on the Fox Soccer Channel. I don't care about the home game since I will be at the "River" but something needs to be done about the away game. Dave, if your listening, this is your chance to increase your fan base since there will be a bit more interest in the team since they are in the playoffs. This game needs to be on a channel that more people can access. And I don't mean comcast. Hopefully KSL will step up to the ball .

Regarding Justin:
If Chivas and Real end in a tie after the two games are played, when and where do they play the 30 minutes of overtime? Directly following the game in California? And would the shoot-out immediately follow the overtime if they are still tied? Does the "golden goal" rule apply in the overtime period, or is it the score at the end of the 30 minutes of overtime?
Re:Hey Dave! | 2:14 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Good idea, but with Fox Soccer paying MLS broadcasting rights, very unlikely.
Playoff Rules | 2:17 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
No, FIFA did away with the golden goal. They'll play the whole 30 minutes. The OT is played right after the second game, at the home of the higher seed (Chivas). Then PKs immediately if it's still tied.
Anonymous | 2:33 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
It's not "golden goal". "Silver goal" ie the score at the end of the 30 minutes of OT. The PKs if it's still tied.

Answer to MLS playoff questions | 4:28 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
The rules for MLS playoffs are to take the top 3 teams in each Conference, and then the next two overall teams in the point standings. So RSL made the playoffs by being in the top three for our conference, and then the next two teams came from the Eastern Conference.

Also, the two game playoff system, which is very common in soccer tournament systems, is only for the quarterfinals. After that, for the semis and the final, it is a one game playoff.
penalty? | 5:10 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
how was that not a penalty when movsysian was mugged inside the box? we should have won 2-1.

oh btw the world series has lost money so far.. Looks like soccer, football, and basketball are going to be the next big three..
wow | 5:11 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
that was one of the most lucky games ever. Fun to watch.

where was morales the whole game though? Hopefully he plays better in the playoffs

I pooped my pants when Real Salt Lake scored that goal.
SJ Doc | 8:28 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Congrats to RSL. I'm really happy for the players and all their fans. The key to our team has been the excellent play of Rimando. Congrats to him and his family. Keep up the good work.

Kudos to Jason. He has definitely changed the attitude of the team and now winning is expected.

Go RSL!!!
Rio Tiento | 9:05 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
A tie???? A tie???? In a professional sports event????

I hope they all got their participation trophies and their orange wedges.

Re: SJ Doc.... | 9:13 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
huh... winning expected???? They tied.
Huh? | 9:26 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Oh please, a sport where you can go to the playoffs after a 1-1 tie? How many ways can we say...BORING!!!!???
Carlos | 9:40 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Rio Tiento: You do realize that ties are possible in the NFL as well right? They were VERY common prior to 1974, and happen a little more often than every other year since? You can hate on the tie (it's a legitimate complaint), but if soccer is stupid for even allowing such a thing, then the NFL must be too.
Whining about ties | 9:56 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008
Soccer isn't the only sport that allows ties. You should check out the football rules.

I pooped my pants also Real Salt Lake scored that goal.
bobcat | 9:50 a.m. Oct. 27, 2008
Yura's goal may have gotten RSL into the playoffs, but it was Rimando's stellar goalkeeping that made the goal meaningful! If it weren't for Rimando, RSL would be watching the next round of games, instead of playing in them!

Go RSL!
Nussdorfer AC | 10:25 a.m. Oct. 27, 2008
A wonderful result. It's so relieving to have finally made it.
Tie in Soccer | 1:18 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008
get over it....yes they tie on occasion. Do you realize it may take another 3 hours to get another goal. Send the few soccer fans home with 1/2 a win before they 'wise-up' and realize how lame soccer is. With a tie, the fans lives to cheer another day.
Re: Whining about ties | 1:32 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008
I guarantee if a team had 10 ties in a season, the NFL they would soon adopt something similar to College Football to resolve such a matter. Do you know when the last tie game ocurred in the NFL regular season? Nov. 10, 2002. Ties suck, no two ways about it. I like soccer but the tie does make it a lot less interesting.
me | 1:40 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008
here is hoping to a NY win against Houston so RSL can host the Western Championship game!
Cowboy | 2:48 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008
If you're losing I guarantee you that you'll be happier with a tie.
If you're drawing I guarantee a tie is unsatisfactory.
But as in my match this weekend if you're winning by three goals and then have two players sent off with 30 minutes still to play getting a tie can be a massive relief - one minute more and we were done for!
PK's | 3:17 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008
If PK's are good enough to settle the World Cup Final, why not to settle any old game? Why tie? I don't get it. My idea would be to settle any regulation tie with PK's. You could still use a point system to determine standings: 3 points for a win in regulation. 2 points for a win in PK's. 1 point for a loss in PK's and 0 for a loss in regulation. That way you can get rid of the "kissing your sister" tie and still get at least a point for being tied after regulation. That would also make each game worth a total of 3 points, whether a game ends in regulation or PK's.
RR | 10:41 a.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Regarding ties, the whole point of playing a game is to see who will win, am I wrong? No game should ever allow a tie...ever. It defeats the purpose of playing a game. Ties are for kids so no one cries if they lose. I'm not slamming soccer, but I think it's insane to have ties in major sports, and to have a tie and enter the playoffs is just more mindboggling.

I once attended a Utah/BYU soccer game that ended in a tie. I was so bummed no one won that I never attended another game again. I just like games with lots of action and lots of scoring and there will be a winner.
yeah | 1:39 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
To everyone that is complaining about how it was a tie, the NFL can end in a tie after overtime, so hush.
re: yeah | 4:11 p.m. Oct. 28, 2008
Too bad you can't read. Go back a few comments and you'll see that a tie in the NFL is infinitely more rare than a tie in soccer. The last tie in the NFL regular season? Nov. 10, 2002. That was some 1500 games ago. How many ties did Real Salt Lake have this year alone? 10. Out of 30 games played. Or 33% of their games. How long before the NFL institutes a change if 33% or even 3% of their games start ending in a tie. ONE NANO SECOND! Nuff said.
And yet they exist | 7:39 p.m. Oct. 29, 2008
Whereas in soccer they were impossible for the first years of the league. And what did your ilk say then? Made up some other excuse is what they did.
Re: And yet they exist | 11:06 a.m. Oct. 31, 2008
My "ilk"? How do you know what I said or might say? What exactly is my ilk? Do you label me as a soccer hater or something? I love soccer. I love the World Cup. I got up at 3 AM to watch the US team play live in Korea in '02. I would love to watch RSL do well this playoff season. I just hate the tie. And when it seems so simple to resolve, since the biggest tournament final, World Cup, can be decided on penalty kicks, why not do something about it? Someone's a little sensitive.
