I noticed this year when I voted early, that the machine now prints a bar-code on the paper tape after it prints your choices. I hope that this audit is done by a human actually reading what was printed on your ballot, and not just by using a bar-code scanner.

I don't remember the bar-code being printed in previous years, but it may have always been there.

Does it matter? Utah will still be in the Republican corner when the voting is all over despite having one of the potential worse presidents in our nation's history.

Bill

Yes, there is the possibility of our having one of the worst potential presidents in our nation's history, but at least Utah will not have voted for the man--one whose support is based more upon his aura than his accomplishments, which are nil.

Impressive

I've been very impressed with how the elections have been handled in Utah ever since we started using the new machines. It's quick and easy and even leaves a paper trail. I have no worries at all that Lt. Gov. Herbert has the state ready.

I, too, am so grateful that we can know that we did not take part in doing the wrong thing. Thank goodness we can know that WE are doing the right thing by not doing the wrong thing that so many others are blindly doing. We Utahns can find solace that we voted for the righteous choice. We will choose the right and let the consequence follow.

Volunteer

I have been volunteering the last few years to help with the election. In the 6 times I have worked the elections there has not been one problem or hold up. Everything went smoothly. The machines worked great (there has always been a barcode printed by the way, but this is also a back up measure, there is not only the printed ballot, but the memory card in the machine), the workers are well trained and barring a huge natural disaster things will go smoothly again this year.

No rights without remedies

If elections officials cheat voters out of a fair process, the lack of enforceable law to hold them accountable will be a problem.

It's not enough to rely on the promise of a politician that the office will do the right thing.

As James Madison wrote in Federalist No. 10, "No man is allowed to be a judge in his own cause; because his interest will certainly bias his judgment, and, not improbably, corrupt his integrity."

Dave

"No rights without remedies" appears to be a theoretical airhead who has had no experience in the operation of Utah's election equipment. I have been a touch screen technician since the machines were first introduced, and I do not see how elections officials can cheat voters out of a fair process.

Kudos to Herbert on this

Despite the fact that very few people know who their Lt. Gov. is or the duties placed upon that position, I am thankful that a trusted man like Gary Herbert is at the helm of oversight of elections.

Probably more important for me in voting for Huntsman or Springmeyer - was my vote for Herbert to be re-elected as our Lt. Gov and election official.

That kind of integrity is priceless, in my opinion.
