I. P. Freeley

Patterson is a class act. His TCU team, since knocking off (then #5) Oklahoma in 2005, has helped the national credibility of MWC football. While this year has been amongst the best for the MWC against non-league foes, all teams need to "step-up" and beat teams from both BCS and non-BCS leagues.

TCU, Utah, BYU, New Mexico and Air Force (when it plays someone other than Navy) are the most consistent in beating non-league foes. CSU seems to be working its way back and UNLV, depending on whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde shows up, can play with a lot of the "big boys."

If they could just keep Utah State and Idaho on their schedules, Wyoming and San Diego State, might actually rack up a win or two against FBS teams as well. They just need to quit playing Cal Poly!

Re: I.P. Freely

I wouldn't have put BYU or New Mexico on that "most consistent in beating non-league foes" list. They did fairly well THIS year, but as far as doing it "consistently"...well...NOPE!

Ute Fan

I agree with you Re: I.P. Freely because BYU almost lost to an 0-6 Washington team. They won cause of a terrible call. But they won by one point. They win by 20 against Utah St. (I know they're not a BCS team) While Utah creams 'em 58-10 and doesn't have one punt. I mean come on.

I'm still lokking forward to a BCS game and the "blackout" against TCU. Also the BYU-Utah game (but not as much anymore). Did you know that if Utah beats TCU (which they should) then BYU beats Utah (which better not happen) Utah will still win the conference! Cause out of those three teams Utah was the last one to win the conference (which is the way the Mountain West goes) Utah will win it.

RE: Ute Fan?

Are you saying because TCU and BYU have both won Mountain West titles more recently than Utah that the tiebreaker would go to Utah?

Cause I'm pretty sure Utah wasn't the last one to win the conference as the last three years have been 2 for BYU and one for TCU.

Big Black

@ Ute Fan,

Be careful about how you would have the team use a gimmick to get excited about a football game. How did Georgia's "blackout" work for them?

Howbout we just stick to what we've done all year? I don't know about you but I bleed RED!!!

Don't start talking about the BYU vs. Utah State game. Utah State didn't even score until the beginning of the 4th quarter. BYU scored 24 points in the 1st quarter alone. It was a beating right from the start. You can't blame our guys for getting "bored" and complacent after beating up on them...the game was over after the first 13 minutes of the game.

No tiebreaker

There is no tiebreaker for football.

If BYU/Utah/TCU all tie for the MWC championship, and none of them gets a bid to a BCS bowl, then the Las Vegas Bowl simply gets first pick, and can choose any of those three teams that it wants.

re: No tiebreaker

Any guess who the Vegas Bowl would choose?

And it wouldn't be either Utah or TCU with their massive traveling fan bases...

Unfortunately, the thought of another trip to chilly Vegas to play a middle of the pack Pac-10 team does nothing to excite me.

Almost rather go to San Diego to play anyone else.

RE Anonymous

was tds "bored and complacent" at tcu too?
What about NM?
Is that your excuse?
Really?
Utah State just managed to expose weaknesses before tcu exploited them. I watched the whole game and tds wasnt bored. they were (are) OVERRATED! but...say whatever you need to say to make you feel better about "next year"!!! ha ha ha ha ha

BYU FAN

BYU didn't blow Utah State out of the water. Who cares. Utah struggled against Weber State, why don't you talk about that.

CougarKeith

Sounds to me like Patterson is a smart coach! TCU will get the Vegas Bowl, Utah will get the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco or the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, and BYU will get either the Bowl Utah doesn't get invited too or the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth. Aren't we so lucky!!! Perhaps we will get the New Mexico Bowl that would be a good one!!! Thanks Craig, Mr. Mountain West Commissioner, your such a genius!

Anti BCS

You should never say any team on your schedule is "overrated". It only makes your team look worse win or lose.

Re: CougarKeith

The MWC lost its tie-in to the Emerald Bowl 2 yrs ago. But I wouldn't expect TDS fans under 30 to know much of anything about the post-season.

GO UTES!!!

Over Rated

The entire MWC is over-rated, and pathetically so. Not one of the teams is worth a hoot in the grand scheme of college football.

@ Utah Fan

Why should Utah beat TCU? Oh yeah, Utah beat Weber State.

Re: BYU Fan

Utah didn't struggle against Weber State. 2/3 of Wildcat points came after the starters had already showered. BYU's first team struggled in quarters 2-4 agsint the Aggies.

RE:CougarKeith

I am a HUGE Utah fan, but Ute fans show some class.
CougarKeith original comment was merely to state that the league is ran by an idiot, not to put down the Utes.
Responses by Utah fans like yours only convince more BYU fans that you are not a true Utah fan, but rather a BYU hater.

ummm, three-letter words

Leave it to a sportswriter to suggest BCS and BYU are three-letter words. These are not words, they are acronyms. But I think the coach is smart to focus on things other than BYU and BCS.

Stop comparing BYU vs USU and Utah vs USU. Different games. Different emotions. Different rivalries. Different times of the season. If you've stooped to using Utah State as a measuring stick, then leave the message boards to the big boys.

four-letter words

TCU will soon turn its attention to a four-letter word, "Utah."

It'll be interesting to see which team's fans are using the most four-letter words after the game.

re: Over Rated

sour grapes from a fan of an inferior conference, the PAC 10.
