It's old but why else save this building...what has it housed in its 117 years?
Anonymous | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 21, 2008
Yeah, what is the point to save anything that is historic?? Come on, 117 years old makes this building one of the oldest commercial buildings in the state. IT IS WORTH SAVING!! It doesn't matter who used it. It has unique architecture. Then again they should have just torn it down and put up another Shilo hotel.

Unless this building has serious historical significance, take a lot of pictures then level it and put up a historical sign. The cost of moving this old building would go a long way towards a new energy efficient comfortable building to work in. A business would go broke making this kind of decision. Can the government afford it?

No, seriously, I was asking what the uses of the building were. They must have been important to warrant not only keeping it but moving it too. Isn't some of the historical significance lost with a new location? Kind of like moving the Heber Creeper to another town...

It was the home of the Odd Fellows!!!

I'm sure the next question is going to be "who were the Odd Fellows?" Well, they were a fraternal organization much like the Masons who specialized in providing support and services to members who were in need. So, if you lost your job or were in need of medical services fellow members would help you out. It was similar to the social services we see today, however, the services were provided by a private group.

At the risk of offending some for the following reference, the Odd Fellows support system was a lot like the LDS Church's current welfare program except the Odd Fellows did not have a "work for your benefit" requirement.

The Shilo Inn in downtown Salt Lake is the worst. They should tear that place down and replace it with something else. That said, it looks like a cheap imitation of something you would see in Vegas.

While we're at it, we should tear down the old Arrowpress Square building across the street from the Salt Palace, and put up a nice new 1200 room Hyatt hotel. That place smells really bad and is a blight on the downtown skyline.

The Odd Fellows are, not were. We are still here, struggling to help our fellow man and promote a civil society. Imagine a world where peoples of different races, religious and political beliefs could respect each other and work for the common good. Now a days, people just yell at each other, sit on their hands and blame each other for the wrongs of the world. I believe Odd Fellowship is needed now more than ever and is not an anachronism. Live by the golden rule, remember the humanity of those who are not of your same mind.
Yours in FL&T,
Greg
