Our current economic situation is dire and killing most of the middle class. Not to mention state budgets. I am absolutely appalled that our city finds this the right time to spend tax payer dollars on a project like this. Not to mention a project that mostly enhances the lives of the wealthy. Thumbs Down SLC leaders! Read the paper once in a while and see where our country is right now, STOP spending my money!
I don't live downtown, but I do know that when I go out for a nice evening I want a downtown that shines. Main Street needs this type of investment. It's clear to me that Mayor Becker gets it and works hard for the whole region. Thank you mayor. Can I vote for you next time?
Once again the LDS Church is really stepping up. We are so fortunate in our community to have them invest so much into our downtown. It is a great location and will hopefully create some real synergy in the area with the other projects underway. But, will ownership by the LDS Church limit the shows staged there? We've seen them censor some NBC shows in the past on their NBC affiliate. I really hope not. Also, many of the arguments in favor of this theater where made to justify expenditure of church $$ for the Conference Center Theater, which doesn't seem to get much use because of the limited fare that is palatable to the LDS Church. If this theater is going to make it, the management needs to be able to stage whatever the community wants.
What do you think would happen to the Utah Jazz if another NBA team would move into Utah, having 2 pro teams, like in LA. I know, ticket sales would drop and 1 of the teams would fold. Well, what do you city leaders think will happen to the Capital theatre and to Kingsbury? Why do you thinks we do not have a MLB team, maybe fan base, do you think that this venture can support itself. Since you will be spending OUR money, are the ticket prices going to reflect that most of us are taking pay cuts in our jobs and working two jobs just to survive. This is just another night out for the elite of the city. Think of US once in a while, you know the two jobbers. STOP spending our money!
I don't know about you, but I don't really mind my tax dollars being spent on a project like this that will attract more people to downtown, provide needed construction and other jobs, and provide quality entertainment that isn't beyond the reach of the middle class (if it's important to them). I'd certainly prefer this to the pork that was tacked onto the bailout bill (paid for by our taxes and/or massive future inflation) that Congress just rammed down our throats.
Shortfalls don't equal Time to spend for the arts in a way bigger than anything we've tried in the past.
I'm glad I don't live in SLC!
Well, on the other side of things, it will create job especially to the construction business which greatly affected by the economic slump. This will atleast makes end meet to some people who just want to survive this downfall. Second, its a facility added to the city so the value of the city will also increase. Beside there are other cities who have multiple theather and they survived.
Atleast we see our tax goes to something we can be proud of and not to someone else pocket and never see the daylight out of them. More construction and development that bailout for the few.
More jobs would be created by lowering taxes, thereby increasing disposable income, than by spending tax dollars on this "asset." If it is such a great "asset" it will pay for itself.
This will be another venue paid for by tax dollars. Not only for the construction but for the operation years into the future. Why doesn't the business crowd step up and invest in the project? Even the soccer stadium recieved millions from the private sector.
This will be great for SLC and great for the Arts. I'm all for it.
If it worked and made money the private sector would be doing it. The recession will take several years in which to recover, poor timing. But! just dip into the hotel tax revenues, I'm sure there's plenty to go around. "Fools and their money are soon parted" E.T. Barnum
Hope it works better than iProvo,Utopia,Etc. and the other pork barrel projects going on in this state.
The new theater will not be good for the arts. It will only make the other struggling venues struggle more, and it will probably struggle itself meaning the taxpayer dollars already going to arts programs (which is a sham in the first place) will be spread even thinner. And given the recent economic meltdown, now is not the time to spend limited tax dollars on "improving" the quality of life of the well-to-do citizens who frankly are the only ones who will be using the theater.
If anything, this theater will put some of the other venues out of business.
Lets see, Jarber, the LDS Church isn't going to own the theater, it's been contracted to sell it.
Not good for the arts, this doesn't compete against existing theater's. There isn't a theater that compares to this in the valley. Kingsbury and capital aren't first run broadway style theater's, while they do get some of the traveling shows, we miss many more that can't operate there.
