Confused | 12:50 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I am very confused to the reaction many Obama supporters have regarding Sarah Palin.

First of all, some people say she is too mean, while others say she's not mean enough for the office. Who is right?

Some people say she throws her political weight around, while others say she's a political lightweight. Who is right on this one?

Sarah Palin was probably not the best pick for the Republican VP slot, but as long as the Democrats keep talking out of both side of their mouths, in regards to Palin, they're not going to win any arguments in my book.

nicely written Halley. I agree. Palin is a disaster. And I'll be voting Obama too.
Sarah shouldn't throw rocks | 1:33 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I don't think she is mean, I like her, but I think that given her husbands involvement with the Alaska independence party, whose founder is anti American (the United States of America), she is a hypocrite for criticising Obama for serving on a charity board with a guy who is a former domestic terrorist.

Sarah stayed married to a man who by his associations was anti US, Obama only was an acquaintence. Don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house.

It is interesting that you would call Palin brainless and then tell us you are voting for Obama? What kind of informed thinking decision is that? The man won't even produce his birth certificate proving his constitutional eligibility for the highest office in the land.

His connections to the gangster radical types is a little interesting don't you think Halley? How about his using law enforcement to intimidate anti Obama protesters exercising their free speech rights?

Anyone who still has a few functioning brain cells and has done a little research into his history or lack thereof would never cast their vote for Obama.

And if he had a solid background, exactly what is it that he is proposing for this country except more of the same steal my freedom, steal my money, and sell my country to the highest bidder?

And because I have done my research, I won't be voting for the other schmuck either although he is clearly the lessor of two evils but not by much.

Confused

As supporters of any political candidate, you are going to get different views its called Semantics.

My concerns over Sarah Palin are Sarah Palin's mothering techniques--
She took her teenage, pregnant daughter to the RNC, instead of protecting her from national scrutiny. She is taking the 6-month-old, special needs baby out all hours of the day and night. Has she never heard of baby sitters or schedules? I never see her put a blanket on that baby, even on windy October days. I realize she is from an arctic state, but this is a baby. She took her 7-year-old daughter out to a hockey game, purposely dressing the girl in a hockey jersey knowing there were people in the audience who didnt like the McCain/Palin ticket. Why wouldnt she protect her daughter from the trauma of hearing people boo her mother? It appears to me, that she gives little regard to how all of this is affecting the children.

At political events, she uses her personal charm and blatant, incendiary rhetoric to incite possibility of violent behavior, and then ignores the hateful rhetoric response of the audience. And if this isnt bad enough, the woman lies like a rug!
Palin poor choice | 4:38 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
The biggest issue with Palin is that it shows how McCain makes choices. Clearly, Palin was not his first choice (he wanted Lieberman and other middle-of-the-road candidates that the GOP wouldn't accept), and he had to cave to his party with her -- a woman who could be conservative enough to appeal to GOP extremists, but female to foil Obama's ethnicity. She wasn't vetted sufficiently and all sorts of non-GOP values about her came to light -- out of wed-lock teenage daughter, forced marriage arrangement between her and her "wild" boyfriend with a naughty, foul-mouthed, anti-family Facebook website, etc. Now, small town and small state politics are coming out to shame Palin and her husband -- a spotlight that would have never happened had she stayed in Alaska, where she was generally successful and would have probably had a good career there. Now, the butt of Tina Fey-impersonation jokes, history will deem Palin one of the reasons the GOP lost power in 2008 and America shifted left with a more activist government willing to tackle domestic problems with a New Deal zeal we've not seen since the 1960s Great Society era. We're in for interesting times! Perhaps for the good!
anon | 5:27 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
What exactly is meant by "talking out of both side of their mouths?" Is that anything like one member of the Republican ticket implying that Sen. Obama is a terrorist by saying he "pals around with terrorists" while the other member of the ticket calls him a "good family man?" Is it considered "talking out of both sides of your mouth" when Sen McCain says "[Sen Obama is] a person you don't have to be scared as president of the United States," (Oct 10, 08) but also says "What [Sen Obama] promises today is the opposite of what he has done his entire career. Perhaps never before in history have the American people been asked to risk so much based on so little." (Oct 14, 08)

Good on ya Halley.......We just need to read the State newspaper of Alaska (Alaska Press) to see how brainless her own people see her.
ScaredUt | 5:47 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
People are not getting the point,Palin may make a fine VP but as a potential president??.Give us all a break please.
HUM.... | 6:06 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
What mean thing that is the last straw is this writer talking about??? This is an odd letter with no central theme of explanation as to why the subject is mean... please explain
Good Grief | 6:18 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Halley, it was very mean of you to call Palin "brainless". I don't understand the hypocrisy of people like you but I can see why you would use it to your political advantage and just hope nobody notices that you are a hypocrite.
Anonymous | 6:24 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Palin is a pure politician who most likely is using McCain just like he is using her.

She'll never be Woman of the Year. (only in the redneck circles)
GeeBee | 6:28 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Confused, they're both right. She has already been found to abuse her office by carrying out personal vendettas from the Governor's chair, but at the same time, she definitely does not have enough brains or spunk to tackle the position of leader of the free world. Can you honestly imagine her at the helm if something happens to McCain? Honestly? It's not really an argument. People know very well, even if they won't admit it, that she is not fit for any high office, and is better suited for the office she has now.
jenny | 6:32 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Sarah Palin is not just mean, there is another name you could call her - she is not an honest woman and in my eyes has no integrity. Her husband did not belong in the Gov's office and least of all being her hatchet man. He is a questionable person and if you are going to go after O for his associations then look no further than the Palins being anti-American and their associations. Why are many Utahns so willing to allow others telling them how to think and see life?
Independent | 6:42 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Confused: You should make up your mind based on facts, not on others opinions.

This is what we Know about Palin:
1: She lied about the 'bridge to nowhere'
2: In the Couric Interview- she could not name a single Supreme Court case, didnt know what newspaper she reads (other than 'all of them') and she doesn't understand or even know what the Bush Doctrine it.
3: Her Husband was a member of and she associated with an organization that called for the seccession of Alaska from the union. This alone is a contradiction to her oath of office.
4: She exagerated Obama's association with Ayers
5: She wont speak in public without McCain holding her hand.

Her problem is not her demeanor. It is her indisputable incompetence.

Quit listening to Hannity and O'Riley. They spout opinion only. Search Palin on Google and you will find all the facts you need.
Ernest T. Bass | 7:11 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
No doubt that McCain's campaign in regretting their decision to add Palin to the ticket.
She brings nothing, that much is more than obvious.
Romney would have been a far better pick, especially now when you consider the problems with the economy.
Finally, is is fact that she has closer ties to a terrorist than any other candidate. She even spoke at one of their rallys.
michaelh | 7:13 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Gov. Palin is neither brainless nor mean. Computer analysis of the VP debates shows that Gov. Palin speaks two grade levels above Obamas choice for VP. As for the meanness what do you want her to do campaign for Obama? That is not her job; her job is to make clear the choice between a man and a woman who love this country and its traditions and a couple of guys that hate American and everything about it. Was this what civil rights movement was all about, putting an African American into office regardless of his hatred for the country and his lack of ability?
OBAMA 08 | 7:14 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Even if Ayers was Obama's best friend I'd still be voting for him!
Milo P Otis | 7:20 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I've already voted absentee - Obama / Biden. No to all the judges - it's time for them to get a real job. What I can't understand is why Todd Palin follows her everywhere - up on the stage. IF McCain wins, will we be getting two for the price of one? Will Todd, the "First Dude" be attending cabinet meetings or sitting next to her in the Senate?

I want to see her on Meet the Press and other news shows. MSNBC and CNN have offered - she refuses. It's time to let her loose and answer questions in her own folksy, unprofessional way. Wink, wink and the only feathers that would be wrinkled would be hers.
Lionheart | 7:30 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Maybe we'll move to Alaska and we can cede (withdraw) from the Union. We have all that oil, and healthy hard working people up there like the Palins. Sort of like the Kurds in Iraq. Or perhaps we could work out a free enterprise zone like Hong Kong. Maybe I'll give Todd Palin a call, those ideas don't sound so strange right now.
Palin's a babe | 7:32 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I'm voting for her because she's cute.
Anonymous | 7:36 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Halley, this is a great letter. I applaud you for your independent voice! And yes, Palin is not just a disaster for Republicans, she's an embarrassment to the United States.
To: Sister T | 7:37 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
If I need parenting advise I am coming to you. I'm not particularly in favor of Palin, but the remarks about her children are over the top, you are scary.
But let Palin be Palin | 7:40 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
and therein lies the problem. She is Palin, she's not compenent, and she's a not a very nice person at all. Her mother skills reek to high heaven, yet she's touted as an example for my family? really? My 17 yr old has not been dating since age 14 (according to baby daddy). My special needs kid is on a tight schedule. My Husband is not a member of a radical separation movement, and keeps his paws out of my profession. I did not have 'friend's' who just happen to be the contractors for the sport complex down the street (which was won on a very odd contract arrangement) 'help' build my home where I have a place to park my sea plane.

I'm tired of hearing that we need to let Palin be Palin. That is the problem. She IS Palin.

Sarah Palin is NOT like me and my family. AND

Oh Boy! Another Sound-Bite voter. Just what the country needs.
wow | 8:03 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
it is fine to criticize but the criticsm of Palin in these blogs and by left-wing hypocrites who demand tolerance and equality (but are really intolerant and elitist) seems remarkably brainless and mean
Anonymous | 8:05 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
How moronic is it to believe reich wing radio? Well just today (and every day), we still have people who think that Obama "won't even produce his birth certificate proving his constitutional eligibility for the highest office in the land." After reading this a few minutes ago, I googled 'obama's birth certificate' and found many pages with pictures of it. We get it, you dont like him. But enough already with the stupid arguments. Argue against his POSITIONS. I am sure you can find something real to hate him for, after all he is a liberal.
Hypocrisy | 8:07 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
@ 1:59 am

What are you talking about? Has the media asked for Obama's Birth Certificate? What are you trying to prove here? Obama hasn't refused to do interviews like Palin has.

Palin can sure dish it out, but she can't take it!
Alex | 8:07 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
RE: Please Halley | 1:59 a.m.

You lost credibility right off the bat with the comment of Obama not producing his birth certificate. He has. It is easily accessible to view on his website. Everything else in your post becomes questionable at best.
Grover | 8:08 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
"Out of the mouths of babes..." and we don't even know if Halley is a babe! Instead of spouting the company line, here is a potential BYU coed joke who is getting her act together. You go girl!
Anonymous | 8:12 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
See! Even the BYU student gets it!
DBG | 8:31 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
@Please Halley: You need to get your facts straight on Obama's birth certificate. Check Snopes or some other place like FactCheck.
Anonymous | 8:52 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
A bi-partisan committee from her own state found she was guilty of unethical and power-mad behavior. She presents her side as totally opposite from the committee's findings and there are STILL those Neocon fools who will STILL automatically take her side in this.

And this is the saddest part of all.
Re: Please Halley | 8:55 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Factcheck has confirmed that a copy of Obama's birth certificate embossed with the Hawaii state seal is kept at his offices in Chicago. You can also see a copy at his Fight The Smears site.

If you're going to accuse someone of being brainless, you should do better than to parrot right-wing smears that have already been disproven.

Go ahead and do your usual Limbaugh routine in blaming the left-wing for exposing Palin's faults
(what else is new?).

The GOP is history for a decade or quite possibly two, and it couldn't have happened to a sweeter and entirely civil bunch of people.

Now go back to The Rush Limbaugh Show for more important news and political spin.

LOL!

BYU student should first talk to her parents about her vote. They are the one's paying her way. Suggests a possible electoral reform. Require all college students to have an adult with them in the voting booth.

Alex | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Re: 9:00 - Now that is a scary thought. What happened to agency? You realize that this student could be paying her own way for college? You realize her parents may support Obama, too? You realize it's OK to vote however you choose, despite what your parents vote?

This letter is further proof that college students aren't mature enough to vote.
ediddy | 9:29 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Whether you like or dislike Palin (the rhetoric here seems to be about 4:1 against), the constant gender based bias is pathetic. From the alleged mothers like Sister T, to the original writer Halley, the kinds of judgements made against her are not being made against Obama or Biden. What kind of fathers are they? I really don't care. I does amaze me, however, how hypocritically judgemental women posters have been over the last few weeks with regard to Palin. How dare a mother enter a "big boys" contest, and allow the world to see her pretty typical American family as it is, warts and all. Why is it these anti Palin people expect her to be better than they are. I would love to see Sister T exposed to the harsh light under which she places Palin.
If "mean" means being willing to bare teeth in the performance of the on the job demands of politics, then I suspect Sarah Palin fits right in with every other politician running for office. But, somehow her naysayers want her to wear a pretty dress and sit quietly in the corner, seen but not heard. Hypocrites!!!!
McFalen | 9:39 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
How could anybody with an IQ above 50 actually think Palin is worthy of the VP of America.

Limbaugh is really doing his job I suppose.
Please | 9:53 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
This "Latest Incident" as you call it, happened a long time ago. You make it sound like it just happened.

If your really that out of touch and think this was a recent incident, do you expect us to give any creadence to your sudden moral decision to jump to the Obama band wagon just because of this "latest incident"???

I get the feeling you've been on the Obama band wagon a long time before this "latest incident". But integrity when writing political opinions is optional, right?
Gus Talwynd | 9:57 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
In defense of Sarah Palin, she is basically an ambitious politician with the drive to succeed, establish her position, and consolidate her authority like any man in the arena. This is how politics is played Right or Left. However, depending upon the person, the extent of action can vary considerably.

Republicans are very capable of projecting a go-for-the-throat aggresiveness that has not been as well-developed by Democrats. George W. Bush allowed his surrogates to carry out the dirty work while trying to remain above the fray.

John McCain called Bush on the smear tactics Bush used against him in South Carolina to little avail, but Bush's hands were as dirty as Rove's in that primary election. And remember, Bush learned about playing dirty working with Lee Atwater in his father's election in 1988.

Recently, Sarah Palin has been going through a make-over (new hairstyle, botox, collegen injections) to maintain her physical image in contrast to her political role on the stump. She is only doing what her handlers tell her to do.

Nonetheless, the Alaska scandals are starting to eat away at her position and are evident that McCain has more problems with Palin than he expected with his pitbull.
Hypocrisy | 10:19 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
The reason for Conservatives to strongly fight for Palin is because they are so desperate. They know that they're pretty much defeated. The mystique of Palin has ran off, and the majority of America see her for what she truly is. A tool for McCain to be elected.

We can truly say, that she does not represent our values. She should fix her family first. How can she rule our country if she can't even govern her own family? Her record is filled with shady friends and deals, such as the bridge to nowhere. I want to know the truth behind these scams! Why does Hannity turn a blind eye to this? I want to know why he turns a blind eye to her government spending and socialism. Did you hear that she increased her town's deficit by millions?

Experience? Seeing Russia from your house does not count. Intelligence? We've seen her in the interviews and debates. Toughness? Is avoiding questions and refusing to do interviews really examples of toughness?

At this time, we the American people want a VP that is capable, competent, and has integrity. Sarah Palin doesn't have that, and it's showing in the polls.

Wow said:

"it is fine to criticize but the criticsm of Palin in these blogs and by left-wing hypocrites who demand tolerance and equality (but are really intolerant and elitist) seems remarkably brainless and mean"

Guilty as charged. After 8 years of Bush II, I am unapologetically biased against letting stupid people anywhere near the White House. I guess that makes me an elitist, because yeah, I think the people that run the country SHOULD be smarter than Joe Six-Pack.
Ekim | 10:26 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
All this talk about Palin is exactly what the Obiden Twins want.

It takes the focus off how truly absurd they are.

You all claim Palin to be brainless and would be a heartbeat from the presidency.

You all forgot to mention that Obama is brainless and wants us to vote for him to BE president.

Spare me.
Lewt | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
The recent Alaska finding about Palin and the trooper does remind me of a certain vice president - Dick Cheney.
