Comments about ‘25 years of 'Is that your cell phone?'’

Dumbest thing ever invebted. Just another way to isolate oourselves from the rest of the world and not being man or woman enough to use good old face to face to do business.

The writer exaggerates just a tad.

I had a cellphone in my Mazda 626, in 1983, in Utah.
Cost $2,000 ... paid off over 36 months.
Service was $45/month.

Didn't text, didn't take pictures, but I could forward incoming calls to my clients' offices when I arrived to them.

Didn't make me a billionaire, but it sure was useful.

Must be a really slow news day

I wonder what amazing advances in communication technology the next 25 years will bring?

I still don't have a cell phone.
I like not being available 24/7.
Hate the darn things.

I have carried a phone in my pocket since 1990. First it was a tool. Then it became a convenience. Now I don't have a landline because the cell is cheaper (with more competition the prices came down). It has replaced my wristwatch and doubles as my calendar with a reminder (I'm forgetful so it's indispensable).

When I don't want to accept calls I turn my phone off and the calls go to an answering service. I get a message when I turn the phone on again. If I have an appointment and I'm delayed all I have to do is call and say something came up. It's a great invention and I still spend only $10-15 a month on service (I prefer face to face, and I only call when I have something to say that can't wait).

I used to hate the idea of being around a phone at all. It seemed like they were just trouble, but now I feel naked without a stupid cell phone. I don't have to keep a list of numbers, they are in the phone. It is a travel alarm clock, don't need a watch any more, keeps appointments and it reminds me when I have a golf tournament and need to sign up.

I don't know why so many people hate cell phones in Utah. Probably because they resent that successful people tend to use their phone a lot more, because they need to.
