BYU football: Dreams can be dashed at TCU
160 comments | Read story
Pardon my lack of football knowledge, but how does comparing our offense to another team's offense prove whether or not our offense has been tested this year? Shouldn't we compare our offense to another team's DEFENSE to get a feel of whether or not we've been "tested"? Doesn't make much sense to me.
#9 TCU +1.2 7 fumbles, 10 interceptions
Turnovers will be a key factor in determining the outcome of the game. With two of the best teams in the country in turnover margin, this will be interesting.
TCU averages about 1.3 interceptions per game. BYU has only thrown 4 interceptions all season.
BYU average two fumble recoveries per game. TCU has only given up 4 fumbles all season.
The team that protects the ball the best will win.
+2 or more BYU, BYU wins
+1 to -1 tossup
+2 or more TCU, TCU wins
If Hall is crisp, and if the defense doesn't allow a couple of 80 yard type strikes, BYU wins in a walk. If, however, Hall plays "acceptable" and the TCU offense controls the clock, it's a 50-50 chance of winning.
However, a loss in Ft. Worth doesn't really mean much from the MWC perspective since the winner of a one-loss BYU team and an undefeated Ute team wins the conference. It would wreck any BCS hopes, of course, but that has never mattered to me. Let 'em go to the Las Vegas Bowl every year.
Any team that is undefeated at this point in the season deserves to be ranked in the top 25. Any team that has won 16 games in a row deserves national recognition.
BYU,
On no account cause damage to TCM unless it is, crucial to winning this game.
Don't let TCU get into the game for a second. Destroy them and eat them uncooked.
UCLA Repeated, I think you've been drinking a little *too much* of that kool-aid. 45-10? I think 17-10 is more likely, with BYU pulling out the win after 4 quarters of a defensive slugfest.
I think Ernest is an Aggie fan, but probably the best advice is to just ignore him.
That's because you, my little brother, sitting in the comfort of your armchair, with your Cheetos-stained fingers on the remote, don't have to put on a uniform to face the Cougs on the field.
You don't have to cover Collie or Pitta. You don't have to tackle Unga. You don't have to face the blitz of Jorgensen or Nixon.
Otherwise, you'd be sweating bullets about the prospect of lining up across from 6'5", 348 lb, Ray Feinga or 6'8", 330 lb, David Oswald.
Don't scare anyone? ha!
STOP it! You're ruining all my established bad stereotypes of what Ute fans are supposed to act like. Even if the Cougars slip Thurs. or the Utes slip later the rivalry game should still be great. Undefeated teams would sure be fun though.
I don't think CSU has, with new Coach Fairchild, improved that much so I imagine TCU may have been looking forward and preparing a little for BYU. Dangerous but it might help.
TCU is going to bring all their guns to this fight and it is at home. Should be a heavy game. Excited to watch how it all turns out.
If TCU loses, they drop out of the top 25 and won't be ranked when Utah plays them in a couple of weeks.
If BYU loses, they drop in the polls, but not clear out of the top 25.
Ergo, with a TCU victory, Utah has a chance to beat TWO ranked teams in the last three games of the season, which is better than beating just one.
Besides, if BYU drops out of the top 10, the pollsters are more likely to give Utah some of those votes that have been going to BYU, making it easier for Utah to move a little higher.
BYU 28
TCU 27
Yes, you read it right. I do want BYU to be unbeaten coming into Nov 22. I want Utah to hand them their only loss of the season.
SoCalUtahFan
As long as BYU keeps beating the MWC, teams should be afraid. But I suppose, as long as teams keep losing to BYU, BYU really doesn't have to care whether or not BYU strikes fear into an unsuspecting opponent.
Take a lesson from "50 year utes fan," though; smart fans realize that BYU, Utah, & TCU are not easy teams for anyone to schedule right now. MWC teams just don't have the luxury of dodging these three powerhouses, or they might. I'm not sure how good a lot of teams are in the nation, but I know that the so-called elite programs have scheduled less games in Provo given how poorly they have fared in the past there, and ever since the BCS cartel was set up to keep the BCS from playing great outside teams. So I apologize that BYU has had to rely on MWC teams to gain prominence, only for us to knock you down: such are the breaks of the system.
Fact is, BYU is the team to beat in the MWC, or better stated, the team that has been beating everyone in the MWC (Not smack talk). Keep it up, Cougs!
I thought horned frogs were poisonous. Enjoy!!
Some game this century, he's bound to be right -- after all, even a broken clock occassionally shows the correct time.
TCU will be the toughest opponent BYU has played; the game will be hard fought. But, in the end, BYU will win.
I remember last year about this time Utes were focused on the BYU game. They got beat by UNLV and AFA.
Hey, at least they are Bowl eligible, and will get an invite to some third rate Bowl, third rate opponent, and keep the bowl streak alive, missing again a chance to play a quality opponent in their bowl game.
Nevermind. Don't try to explain. Washington sounded stupid with their complaints. New Mexico sounded even worse, having lost by three scores. And you can't sound any better than they did, regarding games that haven't even been played yet. Please!
Frankly, anyone who thinks talk off the field means more than beatings suffered on the field is full of wishful thinking. I'll watch the actual where BYU remains an undefeated top ten team. I'm loving reality. I'm sorry if you actually believe yourself when you think BYU is in lala land. Hahahaha, you're killing me, no not literally.
I do not get why BYU/Utah fans talk so much trash about who is better. It is obvious that we will see in November, until then we should just keep our mouths shut so we do not look stupid the the national media that the state is drawing.
The Trojans could bring all the talent they want to LES or RES, but it wouldn't any easier for them to beat BYU or Utah on their home turf, than it has been for the Trojans to beat Oregon State on the Beavers home turf.
USC will have to play their best to finish the regular season without another loss, and that, in a conference that isn't as good as the MWC this season.
UCLA? HAHAHAHAHAHA and ha and ha and ha.
"I would think that they are average and wonder how they are keeping the points off the board." - Bronco Mendenhal, talking about hiw OWN defense.
The article is right about the BYU D, they have not been tested, not even close to a test. They have not played a decent offense yet. That is a scary thing for us cougar fans.
I'm exited for this game, I really am. This game will be all about turnovers.
TCU and BYU have two of the best turnover margins in the nation but they have done it in different ways.
BYU is #2 in the nation in fumbles recovered and TCU is #8 in passes intercepted.
BYU is #9 in the nation in passing and TCU is #13 in the nation in rushing.
TCU leads the Nation in Sacks and BYU has only allowed 2 all season.
What you have here is strength against strength. These teams matchup very well, it should be a great game.
"As of Monday evening, 10 NFL teams and four bowl games (none BCS) have requested credentials. Also, writers from the New York Times, Sporting News, CBS Sportsline, ESPN.com and Yahoo Sports will all be in attendance as well as two photographers from Sports Illustrated."
Here's to hoping for another 31-17 win on the road for the Boys in Blue!
Bottom line is: Everything is hypothetical until we play the game Thursday evening. BYU must bring it's "A" game if they expect to win on the road in Fort Worth. Anything like how they played against USU or UNM will probably result in a disappointing BCS hope crushing defeat.
We will be there en masse Thursday night and fully expect that 1/4 to 1/3 of the crowd will be cheering for BYU. Anywhere BYU plays typically brings out a contingent of local LDS and BYU fans numbering in the thousands. A few years ago when BYU played SMU in the Cotton Bowl-more than half the crowd of 21,000 or so were BYU fans. At venues such as Notre Dame or UCLA last year or Washington this year-there are almost always 15,000-25,000 very vocal BYU fans. Expect the same thing when we travel to Florida State next season.
Go Cougs!!
If 8/11 of a mass of two objects is identical and 3/11 is only marginally different, the overall mass of both objects will be:
a) the same
b) almost the same
c) marginally different
d) very different
UNLV and AFA going to beat us? Ummmm I hate to break the news to you but we are just better than you. So we will be going to the Vegas Bowl while your off to the Alpo bowl in Waco Texas"...
Ummmmm. Aren't you playing CSU this weekend, and the Ute don't care.
Ute fans need to get their heads out of Provo and worry about taking care of business, unlike last year, because to this point, you are the defending 3rd place team from the MWC, with two straight losses to BYU. This is the same talk as the last two years, but your team doesn't keep the focus on their game. However you can twist that into the aplpo bowl is fine, but these are the facts.
Without the Utes, I would have missed a ton of ads on cranberries, almonds and other unknown fruits and legumes.
So, you didn't lose to AFA and UNLV last year while planning the drubbing of the eventual undefeated MWC, two years running. Third place is what happens when you are obsessed with the better team.
If only I had the intelligence of a Ute Fan, I could go buy one of them there red sweatshirts just like urban told us to and begin creating a history in my own mind about how good we are.
Win out, play someone good in a bowl for a change, get your basketball team out of the BCI and into the NIT, and quit your obsession about BYU.
Ute fans are the stalkers of the BYU program, and in the real world, we would have to put a restraing order on you kids.
