Rocky has a point, what a ticky tack call, but that being said, look at all the
no calls, the NM take downs of the Y D-Line was sorely overlooked.
But...that's football, the ref's taketh and the ref's giveth
away.

I felt bad for New Mexico on this call, even though I am a BYU fan. It was an
absolutely terrible call. BYU lucked out. The Offensive PI in the endzone on
Collie was a bad call to, although not as critical. The refs blew. Hats off to
New Mexico for not going away, and it should have been closer. I'm glad we
got a chance to play a lot of run defense, because it will prepare us for TCU
defensively. I also felt the speed of the Lobos secondary was a good test for
the offense. Any predictions on the BYU vs TCU game? Mine is BYU 31 TCU 24

BYU 31, TCU 10. Don't underestimate BYU's defense. They simply need
to be given credit. They've given up 17 points in the last 4 games, with
14 of those meaningless 4th quarter points in a 34-0 blowout over Utah State.

the last two wins over Utah) forever. I suspect that they are going to get a few
game changing calls against them at TCU. What comes around goes around. They

Yeah, I'm gonna repent: I promise I'll never do it again...wait, what
is it again I'm not gonna do? Oh, that's right--cheer when a call goes
our way. And I promise (cross my heart, hope to die) that I won't boo when
a call goes the other way.
LOL...as Agree pointed out, the refs give, the refs take away--and every team gets both sides of the equation. It's nice when you play like they did at the beginning of the season, then you don't need to worry about a call or two going the other way.

Funny how a call that you didn't like is so horrible and worthy of
bemoaning the refs. I wonder why there isn't any complaining about the
obvious holding calls through out the game and the ridiculous PI call against
Collie? Hmmmm....

good teams don't need help from refs to win games. byu has needed help a

Long is right about one thing: the call did change the momentum of the game. But
he's wrong in another thing: the refs didn't "give" BYU the
call. A penalty is a penalty. He should harp on his own player for committing
that foul. A call is a call... C'mon, let's play the game!

I see we have a few cry babies complaining. If you watched the game you would of
seen several bad calls. Even my 14 yr old daughter who happens to be a Utah fan,
I do not know haow that happened, seen the back calls through out the game. The
pi on Collie was a back call. Also the personal foul that kept New Mexico's
drive alive. How about when the BYU defensive back was going to intercept the
ball in the end zone and the NEW Mexico receive grab him and throw him down.

If BYU beats TCU this Thursday I will feel better about the BYU-Utah game. I
think BYU has not played a quality a opponent like TCU yet. This will be a huge
test...and on the road too. My heart says BYU 21, TCU 20. My brain says TCU
24, BYU 10.

There are sssooooo many reasons to be thankful for BYU football. Chief among
them is that it gives Utes fans a reason to get up in morning.
BYU wins a game, Utes fans go nuts and post infantile comments. Well, it is football I suppose.
As for the bad call. Wasn't it just a week or so ago that a blown call gave the Utes a win over Oregon State? Some imaginary pass interference or something? And that imaginary penalty gave you a second chance, directly leading to your win. As in, without that imaginary penalty you would have lost to the mighty ducks.
And even die-hard Ute fans admitted that it was a blown call.
Pot calling the kettle, or something like that. Or how about glass houses? Lots of useful cliches we could go with here.
In the totality of life BYU will have as many good calls as bad calls. I still remember Utah losing to Arizona a few years back when the obviously biased Pac-10 refs called back a CLEAR TD. Even the replay showed it was a TD. Remember that?

and yes, they are getting some calls that have helped them considerably. They
still may have beat both Washington & UNM even if those bad calls
aren't made but it does makes you wonder (like Long said) if BYU gets the

I am worried about TCU. They too have a great defense - the equal of BYU's
at a minimum - and no team can keep winning indefinately. So to say that BYU has
the nation's longest winning streak just proves the point. Sooner or later,
all teams have to lose. Thursday night in Ft. Worth is a good possibility.
Or, like two years ago, they could go into their house and dominate them.

The refs are always looking out for the best interest of the MWC, and negating a
potential score that could have sent BYU to their first loss was what they
thought the conference needed. They want BYU to be undefeated at the end of the
season and so they will favor BYU in ALL their conference games. It's
nothing worse than what referees in all other conferences do. It's all
politics.
Football fans have to suffer though, as each and nearly every game is not true football cuz of the politics. The world we live in and BYU is constantly wanting to be recognized as part of that world.

The personal foul called on fowler was what set up the score that got called
back. The replay shows the guy was still in bounds when he got hit. What goes
around comes around even in the same game.

Maybe the block in the back was a bad call and maybe the pi on Collie was a bad
call, but Collie will push off on just about every play, as will any other good
receiver. The fact is after the calls New Mexico missed a wide open receiver on
the next play. Maybe that is the difference between Rocky and Bronco, two
classic football names by the way. Bronco talks about execution and making
plays.

The only bad call against New Mexico that I can recall throughout the entire
game was the admittedly bogus block-in-the-back call. And it definitely
affected the final score. However, I can think of at least two equally horrible
calls that went against BYU that also would have affected the score: the
aforementioned offensive PI call against Collie that pushed the ball back 15
yards to the 32, where Sorenson missed the field goal wide left, and the
personal foul call on a late hit on a ball-carrier who put one toe on the line
as he was simultaneously hit, which kept a NM drive alive and pushed them well
into BYU territory. In addition, there was, what I thought, a make-up call for
the controversial clipping call in the ensuing BYU drive, which they overcame.
I will leave out all of the no-calls for now, that I think went more NM's
way than BYU's way.
In short, the calls definitely went both ways, and were overall in NM's favor.

On the next play after the penalty, the NM QB missed a wide open receiver for
what would have been a sure TD. It was a great play call at the right time, and
the QB couldn't execute it. If Rocky wants to blame that on a bad penalty
call the play before, then he can continue losing big games.
Great teams maintain composure in the face of adversity and find ways to win. The others lose their cool, then lose the game, then blame it on the refs.
Personally, I thought NM came in with an excellent game plan, and executed it fairly well. Then still got beat by 18 points. BYU is legit, until proven otherwise on the scoreboard.

Maybe you dont understand how the bowl games work. The Fiesta Bowl is for the big kids (The Utes) and the VEGAS Bowl is where the Cougs will be playing. Maybe you can have a rematch against Washington.

supposed two bad calls on BYU's final drive last year, and raise you the
blatant tackle from behind on Utah's fake punt two years ago as BYU was
threatening to run away with the game, already up 14-0. Without that, Utah never
gains any momentum, never gets back in the game, and Harline is still open never
happens.

No, we do understand how the bowl games work, Ute honk. The Vegas Bowl is for
the conference champ -- unless they go to the BCS, in which case, Utah might
actually get to experience the Vegas Bowl as second fiddle. Otherwise, enjoy
another sure invite from the Poinsettia/Emerald,Armed Forces/Poulan Weed Eater
Bowl. Of course, Utah has never gone to the Vegas Bowl as a league champ, so it
would be a new experience for you.
By the way, I don't think Washington will be anywhere close to fifth place in the PAC-10 this year to earn a Vegas invite. They might not even have a fifth-place team with a bowl-eligible record. In that case, I'd love to see a Utah-Toledo matchup. Didn't they just punk Michigan in the Big House? Those two teams would be evenly matched.

Rocky is forgetting the bogus pass interference at the end of the first half
that killed BYU's momentum. You can pick and choose which penalties you
want to complain about, but the block in the back was a block in the back, the
interference call was completely bogus. So suck it up Rocky and take it like

New Mexico wasn't the first team in that game to have a touchdown & scoring drive negated by a penalty. The better team was able to move on and the other wasn't.

New Mexico has an excellent defense and deserves credit for holding BYU to 21
points. BYU will win TCU 20-17.

That call may have been a bad one and would have put the score 14-10, but BYU
would have taken it down and scored again to put it 21-10 or 17-10. That would
have required New Mexico to score a TD to have a chance and even though they had
a fairly good running game that wouldn't have happened.
But if I were Rocky Long I would've been angry too. Let's face it, New Mexico is a solid team-even though the game bored me to tears and made we wonder why I didn't stay home to watch it on TV since it was a cold day.

It is true that refs make bad calls that on both sides of the ball; however, the
only bad calls that really matter are the ones that potentially change the
outcome of a game. There is no question that the call against New Mexico had
the potential to change the outcome of the game. The refs took points off the
board, points that would have made it a one score game.
BYU has benefited from 2 bad calls this year. It is unfortunate because they likely would have won the game without them. Two of BYU's wins have been tainted by poor officiating (if you don't believe the victories are tainted watch any national sports program, the big story is the call, not the victory).
On a separate note, I think BYU will have fits against TCU's defense. BYU's offense has struggled with fast DBs. If they run Unga, they should win no problem.

Well I was on the opposite side of the field but from where i was sitting it
looked like a BYU defender was right there to tackle him when he was catching
the ball. Somehow that defender didn't make the tackle though... Don't
know what the replays showed. Would have like to have seen them.

We BYU fans never want to win a game like this... with a bad call. It's
happened twice now. UNM should've scored. Score would have been 14-10 BYU.
BYU would've had the ball, but the lobos would've had the momentum. I
doubt BYU would've marched it down the field the way they did, and
would've punted. UNM should've had a chance. It was stolen from them.
I agree with Rocky, it should've been a heck of a game right to the end.

those wins were the miracles-that BYU won both or that Utah completely blew the
coverage on Johnny Harline and somehow gave up a 4th and 18 to Collie? A high
school defense would never give up a 4th and 18 with the game on the line.
Funny how somehow pathetic defense on Utah's part is a "miracle"
for BYU.
