BYU football: Long bemoans call that 'changed momentum'
61 comments | Read story
Amazing - Unga bowling over Lobos was so obviously successful, well at least to a moron / couch potato like me. How the heck did it escape the offensive coaching staff. Wait just a minute, was CROWTON on the phone calling the plays?
LOL...as Agree pointed out, the refs give, the refs take away--and every team gets both sides of the equation. It's nice when you play like they did at the beginning of the season, then you don't need to worry about a call or two going the other way.
Go Cougs!!!
ALWAYS get the calls at home, its just a fact of life
that opponents have to deal with
Their sure was a lot of holding going on out their, The refs sure have some blindness going on.
How about the HORRIBLE offensive passing interference call against Collie in the End Zone earlier in the game? That was not a penalty.
On this call, the NM player hit a BYU player in the back. That's a penalty.
There are questionable calls in every game in every sport. There were plenty of questionable calls in the BYU-NM game yesterday on both sides of the ball. That's life.
BYU wins a game, Utes fans go nuts and post infantile comments. Well, it is football I suppose.
As for the bad call. Wasn't it just a week or so ago that a blown call gave the Utes a win over Oregon State? Some imaginary pass interference or something? And that imaginary penalty gave you a second chance, directly leading to your win. As in, without that imaginary penalty you would have lost to the mighty ducks.
And even die-hard Ute fans admitted that it was a blown call.
Pot calling the kettle, or something like that. Or how about glass houses? Lots of useful cliches we could go with here.
In the totality of life BYU will have as many good calls as bad calls. I still remember Utah losing to Arizona a few years back when the obviously biased Pac-10 refs called back a CLEAR TD. Even the replay showed it was a TD. Remember that?
Sportsman ship requires class. Be happy for the Oregon State call, otherwise no #14 ranking.
Are you serious? TrooBloo is using sarcasm. Ever heard of it?
Not only was the call against Bell horrible, BYU mugged UNM's receiver on a no call PI in the endzone on the next play. I was scratching my head after that thinking if that were BYU, would they have called it? They called two against Utah in 2006 that handed BYU the game that were less questionable then the one BYU got away with yesterday.
It just looked bad, BYU fans. That was an ugly win. At the beginning of the year I thought BYU looked unbeatable. After yesterday, I'm starting to wonder if they are a paper tiger. I think we'll know a little more after this next's weeks game.
Or, like two years ago, they could go into their house and dominate them.
You just never know ....
Football fans have to suffer though, as each and nearly every game is not true football cuz of the politics. The world we live in and BYU is constantly wanting to be recognized as part of that world.
In short, the calls definitely went both ways, and were overall in NM's favor.
Great teams maintain composure in the face of adversity and find ways to win. The others lose their cool, then lose the game, then blame it on the refs.
Personally, I thought NM came in with an excellent game plan, and executed it fairly well. Then still got beat by 18 points. BYU is legit, until proven otherwise on the scoreboard.
TCU gets BYU and Utah in the next three weeks. The winner of BYU-TCU will deserve to crow loudly. Utah will wait anxiously.
I will show you two bad calls that kept your drive alive against the U last year. Maybe BYU still scores to win, but you got 30 yards from the refs on that drive, otherwise no top 10 ranking this year.
Maybe you dont understand how the bowl games work. The Fiesta Bowl is for the big kids (The Utes) and the VEGAS Bowl is where the Cougs will be playing. Maybe you can have a rematch against Washington.
Those that win, win. Those that don't cry about it. Such is your lot in life, Ute honks.
By the way, I don't think Washington will be anywhere close to fifth place in the PAC-10 this year to earn a Vegas invite. They might not even have a fifth-place team with a bowl-eligible record. In that case, I'd love to see a Utah-Toledo matchup. Didn't they just punk Michigan in the Big House? Those two teams would be evenly matched.
What's THAT supposed to mean?
Is he insinuating that the refs called the penalty because BYU was ranked #8?
Puh-lease!....does anybody REALLY believe that any referee crew holds BYU near and dear to their heart? Over the years, it seems to me that no one loves BYU except the current students and alumni.
Getting beat year after year by BYU seems to bring out the whinning in opposing coaches.
New Mexico wasn't the first team in that game to have a touchdown & scoring drive negated by a penalty. The better team was able to move on and the other wasn't.
But if I were Rocky Long I would've been angry too. Let's face it, New Mexico is a solid team-even though the game bored me to tears and made we wonder why I didn't stay home to watch it on TV since it was a cold day.
BYU has benefited from 2 bad calls this year. It is unfortunate because they likely would have won the game without them. Two of BYU's wins have been tainted by poor officiating (if you don't believe the victories are tainted watch any national sports program, the big story is the call, not the victory).
On a separate note, I think BYU will have fits against TCU's defense. BYU's offense has struggled with fast DBs. If they run Unga, they should win no problem.
As for the the next play... whats new mexico's excuse??? Don't think they can blame the refs for a wide open receiver dropping a poor pass that was still pretty catchable.
But hey, gift wrap it for them and I'm sure they'll take it again!
