RELAX! | 12:45 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
BYU, Utah and TCU will battle for the MWC crown and maybe a BCS bowl, probably against the crappy Big East Selection. But quit acting like you belong in the top 5.

Neither BYU or Utah has yet to play an opponent with a winning record. Toledo's triumph over 2-4 Michigan takes some luster off that deal.

And lets not forget this Mountain Network debacle. Nobody outside of the Rocky Mountain Region can watch the Utes or Cougars play. So how are they going to jump in the polls playing MWC teams.

Weber State is good enough to beat 2 or 3 teams in the Mountain West. SDSU already has lost to a 1 AA team Wyoming beat a 1 AA team in the final seconds. Colorado State beat Sacramento State a lower tier Big Sky team by a field goal.

BYU Utah and TCU are all very good teams. But outside of those 3 teams nobody in the conference is impressive. Even Air Force who is probably the 4th best team lost to Navy.

Utah and BYU fans should be thrilled to be in the top 15 especially considering they get no national TV exposure.

Max Hall decision making has gotten worse in every game since UCLA. He crams passes into double coverage and throws the ball way too early. He was throwing 2 yard out on 3rd and 5. NM wasn't applying pressure but Hall still was throwing hot routes. He needs to trust the o-line and wait for plays to develop. His worst play was at the end of the 2nd when he missed George running up the seem for an easy 6, but he hesitated and threw to reed in double coverage. Hall needs to be patient and quit throwing into double coverage, he never checks down to Fui even though he's wide open all day for an easy 5 to 8 yards.

Will you Y fans please stop with the persecution crying. Your major problem is you have church mixed in with football...just play the game. God doesn't favor your team over anyone else. I've even heard Y fans say a win proves the church is true. It's a football game please get real!
Wow | 1:50 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Are you people serious? Who really wants to see BYU and Utah play with undefeated schedules? Any hands? Not me, as Ute fan first and foremost I want to with the Mtn. West. So, if BYU or TCU lose an in conference game. GREAT! Last time I checked how I felt in the 4th quarter against the Cougs, their record played no factor!
Why do we Poll????? | 1:51 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
If a team wins every game they play against bad, good and sometimes very good teams, what does that mean? If a team is undefeated but wins every game by only 1 point, what does that mean? If a team wins by 50 against some and struggles against others, what does that mean? If you lose to a nobody and then destroy a juggernaut, what does that mean?

IT MEANS YOU ARE PLAYING FOOTBALL!!!

Polls cannot and will not reflect the true nature of this game. Parity exists in college football, more so now than ever. In the NFL the saying goes "Any given Sunday", which means the game is decided on the field.

This load of crap called polls is shoveled on us every week, and somehow, it has survived!!

Computers were even introduced to "offset" the biased nature of human polls, but honestly they have proven to be even more of a waste.

The only solace I have, is that my team keeps winning!! Here's hoping BYU wins out!!!!
Ute Man | 2:04 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
To all Cougs knockin the Utes schedule, and BYU has played who? That's right, you're knocking us for a weak sched, meanwhile, yours is just as weak, if not weaker than Utah's. Sure you've played UCLA, and Washington, but everyone knows that, just like Michigan and Oregon State, those programs are down. So before you go around patting yourselves on the back, for your victories against bottom of the PAC-10 teams, know that, so far, you haven't played anyone of note, also.

Um, I'm a ute fan and seriously bro, you are PARANOID! If byu were to finish off the season undefeated and win a BCS bowl , then take it all next year there is NO WAY a sane Ute fan would call it controversial. I know there are some of my kin who would get all out of sorts, but it would be incredibly impressive. And I'm assuming that when you say the get a bcs bid this year you mean they have to win, because if they were to get the bid and not win, they'd have to start all over. I watched the game yesterday, and if byu can do what it does to less than stellar teams to a team like TCU, they are all that and the kitchen sink, ha. But you can't argue that byu has played a solid defense, and I'm not arguing that Utah has. Both teams are relatively untested, but have responded when they need to.

If the COUGARS put up 60 points on the Frogs, legitimate questions about a TOP 10 RANKING will go away.

If the game is closer than a 60 point margin, the NAGGING NAYSAYERS will continue to have a field day.

Close wins against any opponent just provide COUGAR HATERS as well as BCS BOWL TYPES with ammunition to justify saying NO to the COUGARS
Utah wins a joke | 2:58 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Wow, Utah beats Michigan in the "Big House".
Hhmmm, App St. beats Michigan in the "BIg House".
Hhmmm , Toledo beats Michigan in the "Big House".

Utah wins are a joke. No joke will be the major whooping BYU puts on Utah in 42 days.

YEE HAW | 3:05 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I think you pouters would be happy to have a Gary Crou-ton and his spread garbage offense back. Perhaps the cougs would then feel the need to put up 70 points to calm your anxiety that they will drop in the polls. That is the more insane idea I can think of. We have to run up the score to impress national pollsters? Who cares!!!!!!!!!!! I saw some pretty sad and droopy eyes at the stadium yesterday. It is very funny.

The next person that calls out Bronco and his staff please contact the AD and see if you can sit up in the coaches box and put on the headset. The other coaches must have blinders on because you are the only one that can see what is going on. They might really welcome your brilliant expertise.

Comparing teams | 3:55 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Records aside...I still think the 2006 was a better overall team once they got it going. The only close game they had that year after the first couple of games was Utah (no surprise). That said, we should find out what BYU is really made of when they finally play the team that they have been prepping for for three weeks.
cougar 4 | 3:58 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Great game Cougs. We fans need to realize everyone gets up to play the Cougs. Case in point, USU playing some great ball last week and stinking it up this week. Not the same team. But thats why you want to play ball for the Y, because you always have to play your best.

The season gets tougher but that only means the cougs play harder. Got get 'em Cougs!

Utah fans, it's ok you can cheer for your own team, your really demonstrating some massive inferiority complex. I would share that on your own articles but more U fans will read it on Coug articles.

To all Naysayers | 4:21 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
BYU's strength of schedule is weak so far, but that's not their fault. Two PAC 10 teams, a WAC team (that backs out so we take one of the stronger div. II teams) and Utah St. for the rivalry is a non-conference schedule to be proud of. B. Mendenhall's teams simply know how to win. They've won 16 straight. You can't argue with that. They deserve to be in the top 10 because they don't lose. We'll see if they can continue to do that against the rest of a strong conference this year. You can't argue against 16 in a row!

Anonymous | 5:31 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I get sick and tired of Utah fans claiming that they have heard BYU fans say that a win by BYU is proof that the church is true. Give me a break.

First of all, it is Utah fans who almost always play the religion card. It doesn't matter what a BYU fan or player says or does, Utah fans bring religion into the equation.

Secondly, I have followed BYU sports for many, many years, and not at one point do I ever remember thinking, hearing, or reading a credible source where BYU belives it should win because it is "God's team". If BYU were in fact "God's team", they would NEVER lose. We all know that doesn't happen so it is ludicrous to even consider.

Finally, I am sick and tired of self-righteous Utah fans who probably are "active" LDS, who continually play the religion card - all in the name of sports. You guys are not much different than Mormon-haters on other sites the post anti-Mormon messages every chance they get.

Let's not forget that this is FOOTBALL - period, and those that think differently need to get a life.
More like BYU paranoid | 6:20 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I love the religion comments and how because those who you assume are NOT LDS that attend the U are so intimidated by BYU, please. BYU is not talked about in airport hangers or airline clubs. People Hate BYU that has been proven by vote for years through SI. It is unfortunate to because BYU fans who bring religion into it only fuel the fire of hatred, but let's not mistake that for jealousy. I am LDS and am happy with my choice not to attend the Y. This poster who goes off about airline clubs in LA and around the world is making me laugh so hard at his attempt to think BYU is so accepted. People HATE BYU, and No that is not because they are good anymore. Look at SOS, wins vs. BCS teams, their road record, their bowl record. The list goes on but lets not get irrational about how much everyone cares and thinks about BYU and their great ways. Head back to your fancy high roller airline club and listen to your satellite feed of KSL on AM and chill. Sip on your caffeine free Diet Coke. Then GET REAL:)HAHAHAHAHA.

Re: ProvoDad. | 8:04 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Amen. What happened to the True Church team during the Crowton years? What happens when Notre Dame,(GO IRISH) SMU, TCU,...etc win? My point exactly.

It is a Football GAME....Repeat GAME, GAME, GAME...

I am way more impressed by the Humanitarian Aid that the LDS church gives ...quite frankly not impressed with the BYU sports or over zealot fans...Know a lot that aren't so extreme but know too many that are.

Go Irish, Go Gators, Go Nittany Lions, Go Carlisle...You know... Jim Thorpe.

Go College football and keep the religion out of it except to pray for safety for the players and the fans.
Lehi Cougar Fan | 8:36 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Isn't it awesome being a cougar fan! Two straight MWC titles. Two straight years of beating Utah. Two straight bowl game wins. 6-0 start. Defense is number 2 in the nation in scoring defense. Incredible QB in Max Hall, best wide receiver in BYU history in Austin Collie. One of the nations best TEs in Dennis Pitta and arguably one of the best running backs in BYU history in Harvey Unga. Not to mention the best O-line in the country and one of the best coaches in the country in Bronco Mendenhall (did you hear Auburn is interested in him?). How can you complain? This team is stacked. Enjoy the ride. I expect our offense to get its groove back at TCU. You better believe they understand how important it is to win this game and I don't expect them to disappoint.

BYU 24 TCU 13

Tarhee Ute - The Perfect Storm | 8:50 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
The polls aren't necessary useless. They are just used poorly by sports media and fans to argue relative performance.

Polls have always been a popularity contest, voted on by coaches who don't watch game video other than that of the team they play the next week or by media who may have a better view from their position, but who are predispositioned to vote with the herd.

Taken with SOS and other mathatical rankings they group teams relatively accurately, but individually...

Until Utah plans BYU in November, their relative poll or even SOS positions aren't very predictive, at least for my money. I'll stake my money on the Utah's home field and the potential for bad weather has having a greater impact as this perfect storm continues to brew.
RE: Anonymous @ 8:54 | 9:23 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Yeah, Michigan is 2-4, just lost to Toledo!!!
Utah State is 1-and something, Oregon State beat USC, but USC chokes every year, and other than that they are either 500 or have a losing record, so yeah, i dont think your out of conference teams are doin too hot either!
Re: ProvoDad | 10:20 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
So when Tim Tebow thanks God and says it's because of God they win, that they beat LSU. How about when Colt McCow says that God has something in store for them and that is why they are winning? Why is it only when a BYU player makes such a statement and accolade to God, that it is considered self-righteous. Plenty of football/basketball/baseball players give that same credit, and comment on how it is because of God, or God has something in store for them, or whatever that they succeed.

Get over yourself...
liloldlobo | 11:11 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Congrats to BYU and the MWC, although my eyes are not as good as they once were I can still smell a rat. Not a conspiracy person but I've seen it enough to know how things work in the MWC and the "old WAC". Rocky will be fined for his post game comments on the "criminal momentum changing call" and no one will hear what is said in Colorado Springs about it. Apologies are never printed. After The Mnt posted BYU's 50lb O-line advantage about 5 times they never once replayed any of the blantant holding "missed" calls, BYU was not called for offensive holding once. If you are smaller, faster and blitz like NM you have to hold to keep your QB safe, I counted six in the open. I was at the TCU vs NM game and TCU is fster quicker and bigger. Football fans should watch the line play and see if the no calls are lined up.

Ps. Brain Johnson see you on your back a few times when you get here as Utah has yet to earn the MWC seal of approval this year.

RE: BYU more Like paranoid | 11:30 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Got news for you Mr. Know it all..., anyone who is a true sports fan keeps track of teams who are in the top 10 or even top 20. Since you obviously do not have to take flights for business or talk with people outside your "University of Utah BUBBLE" don't assume that you know what other people have conversations about.

Yes, here in the heart of USC and UCLA country there actual conversations about the top 10 teams and the great football (quaterback tradition) at BYU. Yes, even in Chicago airport a few weeks ago while listening to the BYU/UCLA game on a computer while others watched the Michigan/Notre Dame game people asked what I was listening to and actually asked me about it!

I never brought religion into my comments I only said that the BYU football program is respected by fellow sports fans I have run into (and no, they are not LDS) It's a simple statement that has seemed to rock a few Ute fans on this blog!

Laugh all you want...I have been very complimentary about the Ute team this year on these blogs.
re: re: BYU more like paranoid | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I agree. Many people know little about the religion at BYU. When I wear BYU shirts around Minnesota and Wisconsin, people usually tell me that they wonder if anyone will beat my team, say what a great QB we have, say they pay a little closer attention when they talk about BYU this year because of how great they've been in the past.

The typical person isn't a BYU hater, and you'll find if you respect someone, they will respect you.

My big fear is if some of these so called posters act this way in public, many people will despise all Utah teams. Bloggers on here are so shameful it's disgusting. I can't believe this newspaper doesn't stick to its red writing.
harder than Washington | 9:13 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
beating TCU on the road will be a more difficult task than beating Washington. The TCU offense is average but the defense is pretty darn fast and athletic. The key to this game will be turn overs. TCU wins games with turn overs and BYU has been losing lots of balls (and then recovering them). If BYU can have no turn overs I pick them to win by 7. If BYU turns the ball over more than once they will lose.
CougarKeith | 9:44 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
BYU is in some serious trouble! From their last two games, they aren't listening to their coaches, they aren't taking care of business, and they are are going to settle for the Las Vegas Bowl after they lose to Utah if they are lucky enough to get by TCU on Thursday. I am a die hard BYU fan, everyone knows that, but I am a realist, and the scores of the last two games are not going to put BYU in any championship game for a national title, and as a matter of fact, they won't even get there with the way they are playing. Austin Collie is worried about the stinking draft and what the scouts think, it shows by his dropped balls, and I for one am getting sick of his sub-par play! He is capable of much better! Unga, Hall, the line and the Defense are pulling their weight, but concentration had better PICK UP!!! BYU better get out of dream land, or the serious fact is we are looking at another short trip to Vegas as the second place finisher in the Mountain West while we watch Utah go BCS! TCU could take us out too!
Texas Cougar | 11:34 a.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Contrary to popular belief, the sky is not falling. BYU beat a decent MWC opponent that has been tough to beat recently (maybe because our coaches know each other so well). BYU has still not allowed a conference touchdown, and they're still ranked in the top ten. They're going to play a great opponent on Thursday (which is tough for TCU, as they usually don't do really well on Thursday games).

By-the-way, BYU is bowl eligible. A few years ago, that really meant something. Utah fans are reacting to every little stumble that the Cougars make (which they didn't do in 2004...there's something more threatening about the Cougars this year).

Cougar fans need to sit back and enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Dave | 4:56 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
I love the enthusiasm and faith shown by BYU fans. It is also great to see it all come crashing down when they lose to the Utes. As an Aggie having watched both the games in Logan there is no doubt the Utes are a better all around team and better coached. Quest for 10-1!!!
TC WHO? | 6:31 p.m. Oct. 13, 2008
Why does everyone in the MWC think TCu is that good? They look worse than Air Force. Why isn't anyone saying AF, Utah and BYU? Is it cuz Utah already beat AF? What if AF beats BYU and BYU beats Utah, what then? And they all beat TCU? This will be a very interesting year in the MWC, where the only team to probably go undefeated is Utah (they beat AF and have BYU and TCU at home).
