To all you Utes who think the Lobos are weak. I remind you that you get to prove that in their stadium soon. Better keep your words soft and sweet, you might have to eat them! Go Lobos! Byu will face what might be best team in the MWC next Thursday! It will be an interesting game and as many others have observed, if BYU doesn't bring their "A" game, they will take their first loss of the year.
MtnWestFan | 4:55 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
All I have to say to these Ute fans that are posting, try filling your stadium before you come knocking on BYU's door. This is a GREAT year for the MtnWest and I hope both BYU and Utah continue their undefeated streaks. I say, be happy for your rival until they meet in Salt Lake. Since the real enemy is the BCS, Ute fans better be cheering for BYU to stay undefeated.....otherwise you won't get as much BCS love if you win come November.

Thank you. I hope this helps to clarify things.

coogs are terrible. you chumps were at home and you barely won. this makes, what, 2 games now where an official helped you out. your time is coming against tcu. they will send you packing straight to the las vegas bowl!

What kind of a game plan was that. Come out and throw the ball every down for the first quarter. Everyone who has watched the Lobos during the Rocky Long era knows that It is tough to throw against them. Were they trying to make it chalenging on themselves? Even Texas knew better against Oklahoma and they had negative rushing yards for a better part of the game. Come on Anae. You have one of the more powerful backfields in the NCAA. Was that just practice for TCU or some later opponent? Two weeks in a row.

Where is the intensity. I love cougar football but seriously. There doesnt seem to be any excitement. I know how dangerouse emotion can be, but there seems to be very little fire. Do you care? I know this shouldnt matter to me as much as it does, but when you win, lose, play well, or terrible, it effects me for my entire week. Show up on thursday. I attended the game when BYU beat #1 Miami with Ty Detmer. That team had fire. Were has yours gone, or was it all left on the field against UCLA. This is the first day of the rest of your season.

Having said that, my concern is for future games, because I dont think you can win them playing the way you have. A win is a win however. 21-4 isnt that bad. A couple years ago we would have been extremely excited.

Yes, very unimpressive win...just like Oklahoma's trouncing of Texas or LSU's steam rolling victory over the Gators.....or here's one.........Missouri's total domination of Oklahoma State. Got to admit utey's find ways to make the ball that isn't round.....round.....at least in their eyes.

...Tinkerbell... would you quit with the fairy dust already...it's not nice to deceive utey's to actually believe the weird things they're saying during their brief stay in wonderland.

Boise State is more than 40 miles away and it's in the WAC and not the MWC and Ute, there are at least 2 L's waiting for you out there. The good news is one will be in a bowl game We'll mail our condolences from the BCS.

And the UTES barely eek out a win against Oregon State, at home. Oregon State lost to Stanford. Stanford lost to TCU. I think the UTES have plenty to worry about themselves.

Once again, thanks everyone for such ridiculous comments that give me a great laugh! Critics are so pathetic I'm embarrassed for them.

WHO CARES IF IT'S NOT A HUGE BLOWOUT. ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT IT'S A WIN.

Every team is out to beat BYU. Every team will give us our best shot. To only hold them to 3 points is sensational!

Can't wait to see them play TCU!!
Cats | 8:43 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
As a Cougar season ticket holder, I was at the game. UNM is a good team and they put up a tough fight.

As for BCS--I think BYU has a good chance to get into a BCS bowl, but they will never be allowed to play for the National Championship. When BYU won The National Championship in 1984, the BCS was formed to make sure that didn't ever happen again. These guys want to make sure that no National Champion ever comes out of any conference other than the "big" conferences they control.

Having said that--I hope I'm wrong and BYU gets a chance again someday.

P.S. My self esteem isn't based on whether my college wins a game or not. I hope a few people on these blogs can stop living their lives vicariously through a team full of guys who most of them have never even met. Sports are ENTERTAINMENT. That's all. It's a lot of fun and I like to see BYU win, but my life doesn't hang on it.

IT'S ONLY A GAME PEOPLE!

13. BYU (SOS 121)

Why don't the BYU fans look up where the prophets have graduated from? Yes, the U. So all those posters who are always saying how "evil" the U is, it's obviously good enough for our leaders!

I am a kickers dad, so why in the world did they not utilize Justin Sorensen on 2 long FG's when they had the chance early in the 3rd qtr? Or show some guts and go for it on 4 and 2. Come on show some trust and confidence in your team coach.
Ute Fans | 9:08 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I understand and agree the last two weeks of BYU we have seen lack-luster performances. However, before you start down the road of "fear" "ute domination" "etc", lets take the rosy red glasses off and see that Utah has it's own problems. They look horrible offensively, and if it wasn't for the defense yesterday, Utah may have only won that game 10-7.

BYU needs to do something quick to get that groove back, or else thursday night may be a little unsettling. Utah needs to figure something out offensively, and I would start with Johnson or their game in Albequerque in a few weeks will be unsettling.

As for UNM, they are finally 100% healthy with their star studed running backs. UNM put up the fight that everyone at the beginning of the season thought they would as a healthy team. That doesn't excuse BYU's offense for showing no sign of intensity or excitement. And is it just me, or does it appear they have gotten very conservative in play calling since the 2nd quarter of the USU game?
re: To "to the Ute fans" | 9:13 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Actually pall, this is not the same guy who made the post you replyed to, however, I am from NYC and travel up and down the coast. Sports talk shows do talk about BYU and are very aware of who they are. In fact, everytime the conversation about BCS-Busters come up, fans think of BYU (and Boise in second place). So how about you leave the "bubble" as you call it, and think twice before you make redicoulous comments about BYU not being known nationally.
BlueBoy | 9:15 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
BYU's defense is legit, except for some lame game planning by the coaches (re: no pressure on their passing QBs until the last few plays of the game). BYU seems to have the defensive talent to deserve a top 10 ranking, but the coaches keep handicapping them by ignoring things, like QBs running up the middle all game, or QBs not used to passing never have much pressure all game.

Offense? Overrated. Again, coaching. Why? How many times did Harvey touch the ball in the first half when UNM's running game was keeping the ball away from BYU's offense? Duh!

BYU has top-10 talent on the field. They just need top-10 talent in coaches' game planning--AND the ability to adjust DURING a game.

BlueBoy | 9:21 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
BYU's fortunes in today's polls might suffer, yet stay in the top ten, but with Utah knocking at their heels (yuck!).

I tried to figure out how far down the three top teams would fall, while elevating the teams that had big wins, and couldn't determine where they'd all fall. Pretty complicated when good teams at the top lose AND lost to teams just outside the top 10. If you win, you should go up. If you're at the top and lose to another top 10 team you shouldn't drop too much. Leaves BYU in a pickle.

I won't be surprised if the pollsters allow 2-4 teams below BYU to jump over them, knocking them out of the top 10 in the AP poll and to around 10 in the USA poll. However, a 3 on defense is pretty impressive, maybe reinforcing memories of our two shutouts. That could help us to maintain, or even move up, depending on how far they drop some of those top 3 that lost.

I'd be surprised if TCU doesn't make it into the top 25 in one of the polls. They're 6-1, with their only loss to Oklahoma.
jerry thompson | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
My concern with the Cougar vs. Lobos was essentially the first quarter. It set the tone for the entire game i. e. BYU playing down to the opponent. Did anybody notice that New Mexico had the ball for eleven minutes in the first quarter to four minutes for the Cougars. I believe that the Lobos doubled the Cougar yardage, something like 45 yards to 90 for the Lobos. The problem was the Cougar defense was playing soft allowing the Lobos to make first downs. There was no quarterback pressure on the rookie QBs. A veteran quarterback is hard to rattle with pressure because he reads the defense and hits the hot receiver but these guys were new and at least one of them couldn't pass. Being a one dimensional offense the Lobos should have been going backwards instead of forward. So I would lay the difficulty in winning the game directly in the lap of the coaches for their play selections. Not being able to stop the New Mexico Lobos on third down and the Cougar offense going 4 for 12 on third down conversions was ridiculous.

Just for fun I read the U article and this one and the comments to see who has little brother syndrome. I'll spare you all the results.
Simply read the number of Utes on this article trying to belittle the Y win, and then go to the other one and try to find yourself any negative comments going towards the Utes that doesn't start with a Ute going after BYU...again....
Hey little brother on the hill. Mommy has some fruit snacks for you.

Did you guys see the TCU/Colorado State game?

Colorado State should have won that game. They had 2 perfect passes in the end zone that were dropped that would have put them up. TCU has a good pass rush defense, I'll give them that, but Colorado State moved the ball on them. Their backup quarterback is a good athlete, but shows lack of experience.

It'll be a tough game for BYU, especially on the road, but I think they'll pull it off by winning the turnover margin.
cougar realization | 10:06 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
As a cougar fan, I'm very embarrassed by that last game and now realize we don't belong in the top 10. It's all political anyway, so I don't put much merit in the rankings, but either way, I kind of hope we lose a game to bring us fans back down to reality.
Lehi Cougar Fan | 10:11 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Sierra Blue - I like your post.

There are some good teams in the MWC that will bring their best game against BYU and if you're expecting BYU to blow out every team, then you're in for alot of disappointment.

CSU looked like a threat against TCU. I was impressed with the RB and their defense was fairly tenacious at times. We all know that TCU and Utah are good and don't count out Air Force and UNLV. As Bronco has said, the rest of the games on the schedule are going to be hard fought.

So, all you folks that are cracking on the Cougars for "not looking like a top 10 team" layoff and enjoy the wins and the ride!!

Lobomike | 10:17 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I have been a New Mexico Lobo fan for many years, and I thought this was an exciting game between two of the top four most physical teams in the MWC (the others being Utah and TCU). Give credit to BYU and New Mexico. Both teams came in expecting to win and something to prove not just to the opposing team but to themselves. I think New Mexico has found themselves with this game and will build on what they did/did not accomplish for the game and turn what has been a roller coaster season into a good season season and hopefully make it to another bowl game (hopefully not the New Mexico Bowl). I can also say the same about BYU (excluding the roller coaster). It may not have been the performance they were looking for against New Mexico, but that could be a blessing in disguise as conference season really heats up down the stretch.
Trinity | 10:18 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
You ute fans who have nothing better to do than peck at BYU when you should be worrying about your own team (and you have cause to worry). Your offense did very little against Wyoming.

Lest you forget, utah still needs to play UNM. Expect an L if your offense can't play better. That UNM defense is the best one BYU has faced this year. Probably the best even after November 22.

BYU Canuck | 10:21 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
To all you BOOers:

They won by three scores! That's not just a win, it's domination. Would you feel better if they won 51-33? Because it's still 18 points. Watch some other games by top ten teams and you will see that they struggle too during their games. It was a solid game.

PS: Please don't boo Mendenhall. Do you want him to go away?
BlueBoy | 10:21 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
Here's how each league has done against non-league opponents so far (including from the lower echelon conferences not listed here):

SEC85% (28-5)
Big 1279% (38-10)
ACC76% (32-10)
Big 1076% (31-10)
MWC68% (23-11)
NDame67% (4-2)
Big E65% (22-12)
avg60% (269-179)
Mid-Am51% (29-28)
WAC50% (17-17)
Indep48% (12-13)
Pac-1046% (13-15)
ConfUSA37% (16-27)
SunBelt28% (8-21)

Notice how far down the Pac-10 is because of the MWC's dominance over it. However, notice the MWC is barely above average! And, the MWC is barely above the Big East.

The SEC is obviously the cream of the crop, in spite of not having as man highly ranked teams as the Big 12 (which might change today).

For those who think only the BCS wins/losses are important in comparing conferences, you're discounting non-BCS wins over BCS opponents! And, that happens every year, even from teams not in these 12 conferences.

Now, in spite of these stats, I'll betcha the Pac-10 teams' SOS ratings on average are above the MWC teams'. Computer rankings are as useless as it comes. Polls aren't much better, but at least BYU won one using them!

If people that understand football would agree that BYU played a great game and that " a win is a win" why does BYU keep falling in the polls? They win a game and move backwards in the polls?
YEE HAW | 10:48 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
It become harder and harder to sit in L.E. Stadium and listen to all you know it all fans. You complain about play calling, you complain about the defense. Then when the players (not you or your inspiration) make a great play you stand and cheer. Probably the worst fair weather fans in the country. Bronco and his staff know better than you do. They are 7-0 what else can they prove. You should have sat back and enjoyed a real football game yesterday. Bronco wasn't expecting a blow out so why should you think any differently. He doesn't care about the national polls either.

I will only say this one more time! a win might be a win for every other school in the country. Your team is the ONLY team that has moved down in the polls after your so called win. It has happened twice to you posers. (washington and Utah state) don't cry when you fall in the polls once again tonight! but hey, a win is a win right?
YEE HAW | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
What does overrated mean? Is that a reason to be angry and pout over BYU being 7-0. Do you really think Bronco is concerned about a midseason poll created by folks that have never watched the cougs play. The only poll that matters is how the season ends. Some of you folks would love to see the cougs move up to #1 in a midseason poll so you can talk about it for the next 20 years. Please don't forget about the nations longest winning streak, undefeated in conference for over 2.5 seasons. 2 straight bowls wins.
YEE HAW | 10:56 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
I have a great idea. You pouter-poll watchers should spend one day at the stadium and close your mouths and actually just watch the brilliance of Bronco and the cougs. You really have NO CLUE of what is really going on. Let me inform you....they are UNDEFEATED!!!!!!!!!

checking the rankings the east coast bias comes out again. moving florida up to number 5 even though all they beat was an overrated LSU team that haddent beaten anybody except Auburn and we know how good they are. So you kill a team that was over ranked then you get to move up 5 to 6 spots sound like east cost wants to get florida back in the chapionship game with one loss. They even jumped a one lost USC team something is wrong with the voters.
A Few Comments | 11:23 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
1. The Lobos have some very good individual defenders who made the passing lanes very tight. Playing that defense was great timing as TCU will similarly have very good defenders.

2. My concern about the Cougs over the past two games is that they are having trouble with sustained intensity or concentration. It's as if they are turing it on and off throughout the game. UCLA and even Wyoming to a lesser degree was a very consistent game from beginning to end. But against USU and NM it seemed that the Cougs didn't have their heads in the game on several series. But they did bring it when they had to - that last defensive stand was top 5 worthy. The challenge it appears with this team is to keep them up and focused for every drive. We will need that Thursday and as the season progresses.

3. I don't think we'll slip and may even move up a notch or two as 3 top ten teams lost. Sportscenter type of highlights are focusing on the nation-leading win streak and that's what most voters hear. Being stuck on the Mtn. may become an actual blessing regarding votes.
Lehi Cougar RE Predictions | 11:46 a.m. Oct. 12, 2008
After watching TCU against CSU last night, I'd say your team will be lucky to get in the endzone twice against a Cougar defense that has allowed 17 points in the last 4 games combined. The TCU defense was getting burned by CSU's passing game last night and was lucky CSUs receivers couldn't catch the ball or your team would have lost. The TCU QB is athletic but shows his inexperience.

Look to BYU's defense to force 2 turnovers, one interception and one fumble. TCU has a good defense but BYU's O-line is the best pass protection in the country. You might see one sack at most by TCU, but Max makes good decisions in the pocket, so it's very difficult to get to him.

My prediction:

BYU 24
TCU 13

I have maintained all along that the exposure the Utah schools are receiving nationally far supercedes the worthless banter and sniveling between BYU and Utah fans.
Stop this nonsense football lovers !
Consider the following;
The State of Utah has 2 teams in the NCAA I-A ranked in the top 15 , Weber State is ranked 22 among the 1-AA schools , Snow College is the 2nd ranked team in the nation among Junior Colleges.
That written, it is my opinion that we should be whooping it up for future " Blue Chip ", recruits who absorb the reality of positive exposure the state offers and for the high quality of football played here. That thought alone should prove to be for the overall good for football and the future of the game within the state of Utah for each school on every level and their fans.
Get out the smelling salts boys aand girls, we shoould strive to get along and be proud of the football programs offered here.
Confused | 12:05 p.m. Oct. 12, 2008
The coaches have rolled up into their shells and are coaching not to lose rather than to win.

Bronco's thinking too much on the sidelines.

This is not a team that can rely on the defense to get lucky to win games. The slightest whiff of a single call in a game like this and they are finished.

The offense must dominate against TCU and Utah.

But the computers have already announced that an undefeated BYU or Utah team will not beat out an undefeated BSU team for the BCS.

Las Vegas bowl against Arizona. Whoopee.
