im still trying to figure out how New Mexico made that field goal....i thought jan jorgensen made it very clear several weeks ago, that BYU KNEW they were going to block that 35 yard PAT Washington had to kick with 2 seconds left, before they even lined up to kick it. If they can blocks kicks at will like that, then why are they letting UNM make theirs...
Hello, Coach Long? | 6:38 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Can someone tell me why you go for 4 and 22 instead of a 30 yard field goal? Could've given the Lobos momentum and only a one TD deficit. A gift to BYU (almost big as the ref's gift on that bogus block-in-the-back penalty)!
Y-Not? | 6:53 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Even though a win is a win, this was a very lack luster performance. Not very impressive.
BYU FADING FAST | 6:53 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
34-14 against 115 (USU) in case you forgot.
21-3 over LOWBLOWS

BYU is getting worse on offense and they relied again on a lame "block in the back" call to win the game. They may have still won but that would have made it a 4 point game. Point being BYU is not getting better and quite frankly they are pretty weak unless they are HOME. LOOK AT WHAT TEAMS have done at UW to UW, a lot more than BYU for sure.

Officially the worst #8 team ever, unproven, with a weak schedule. LAME performance, if you can even call it a performance:)

Well once again.... | 7:01 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
...the refs "rise and shout." Why do they keep helping BYU?
GoodGuyGary | 7:06 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
It is funny how people mind others' business. How many of you posters are BYU fans here? Just to take care of your own business first, your team, your family, and heck, you may lose your job next week. So, if you don't care about BYU, don't post here.
GameTimeObserver | 7:10 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
21 to 3 is not a whuppin, especially when the game was within 11 points in the last 7 minutes. I think the Cougars let a great opportunity go by. The number 1 team loses and they come out and struggle against the Lobos. I would not be surprised if they do not move up in the polls.
Wow | 7:12 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
The Y has to move up in the polls. Maybe even some number one votes. After all, how much harder could it be to beat Oklahoma than it was to beat NM or USU? They are all state schools.
Actual BYU fan | 7:15 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Not an impressive performance. BYU needed to establish the run sooner. Defense definitely plays the "bend but don't break" style. I felt that Anae could have had a better offensive scheme. Second half was better but the first half was abysmal.

Lobos played tough and were well prepared. Next week will be the real test.
PA ALUM | 7:17 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Sounds like a lot of sour Ute fans blogging. It was a tough win but NM defense was up for this game. A win is a win. I hope both the Utes and Cougars keep their unblemished records till they meet and then we can see who the better team is!!!
OH poor "Good Guy Gary" | 7:17 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Are you being serious dude? BYU needs another lame call to keep UNM out of it. While UNM may not have won BYU definitely is getting worse as the season progresses. Let me worry about my job and my family you post about BYU and leave me and my family out if it. Cougars heading for doom. A weak #8 for sure. What makes their #8 even weaker is their MTN TV contract. I had to watch these guys and they are hilarious, is it a comedy station?

"Good Guy Gary" you are a SAD imposter.
Ute Man | 7:17 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Do you hear the "pin" drop?........oooops, that's not a pin drop, that's the sound of BYU, falling out of the top 10.......ouch!
Utahman | 7:21 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
GO BYU, GO UTES!
Two undefeated teams midway through the season is great for the state. Let's all hope they can both stay undefeated until THE game in NOV. What a show down it will be. They both have had close games and some lackluster games... but have both managed to pull out the W's. Nice going!
Lobos always tough in Provo | 7:23 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
New Mexico always seems to play BYU tough in Provo. In 1996, when BYU fielded arguably its second-best team ever (14-1), they barely got by UNM. Here's hoping BYU has enough juice to dispatch TCU on the short week.
To the Ute Fans... | 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
You have a good football team but so does BYU!!

Let's see how well you do against New Mexico! I'm tired of the Ute fans posting nasty comments on BYU articles.

I travel a lot for business and fans of top ranked teams throughout the U.S. are VERY AWARE of the great football program at BYU!

I think any team can lose on any given day and the upsets we have seen this year prove that! This is MWC play and a win is a win! Listening to the after game show Max & Austin said every game from here on out is going to be a "dog fight, we will take the win 21-3!" They clearly respect their opponents!

GO COUGARS!!
Poor Ute Fans | 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
continue to try and find the negative, quit your whining, BYU hasn't played their best but is still winning...kinda scary, huh Ute fans?
Sierra Blue | 7:32 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I posted on Wednesday that this would be a close low scoring game. One enlightened soul called me an idiot for expressing that view. (For the record, having a difference of opinion on a subjective issue does not make one an idiot - any more than being right with an opinion makes one a genius).

I think many fans failed to recognize that UNM is a tough football team that has no trouble getting amped to play BYU. Further, they aren't without talent and determination.

People who understand football will agree this was a good win. In the final analysis, the people who vote in the polls will be far more impressed with BYUs 12-0 record (should they get there) than with the fact that they beat some middle of the road teams by less than blowout margins.

12-0 will get BYU into a BCS game. It might not get them into the national championship game this year, but if they go 12-0 and win their BCS game, they will be ideally positioned to get into the national championship game next year. Don't forget, they have lots of talent returning!

Keep the faith, and be positive.

Go Cougars!!
Cougar Fan | 7:33 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Oh well, it wasn't pretty but we'll take it. Defense held up. Every MWC team will be gunning for BYU and Utah. We'll see how it all plays out. Go Cougars!
Top 20??? | 7:36 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I am a huge BYU fan and I will be the first to admit that BYU is not the 8th best team in the country. Nor is Utah the 14th best team. In fact I wonder if either team really belongs in the top 20.

That being said, however, a win is a win and BYU has strung a whole bunch of them together (sorry, my Utah education keeps me from being able to count that high).

But what I do know is that BYU will be ready for Utah come November 22, regardless of what either team's record is at the time, and BYU WILL WIN THAT GAME. I smell a 3-peat and we will see how much smack little brother up on the hill has in him when the not-so-mighty Utes go down to BYU for the 3rd straight year! I can hardly wait!

Go Cougars!!!
Bend, don't break | 7:38 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Still can't understand why our DBs play 15 yards off the ball and still are backpedalling when the QB throws the 5-yard outs that are stretched into first downs. UNM could've called that all day long, but their own mistakes killed them. Also, the UNM option was unstopped.

It's simple--one person takes QB, one person takes RB. Seemed like BYU never made adjustments, and when a better offense runs both of those plays consistently against BYU defense, the Y will lose. Seems like TCU and the U should take note.
Lady Cougar Fan | 7:40 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Come on Ute fans... You can't say mean things when Wyoming had more offensive yards than your Utes. Hmmm... Brian Johnson had 115 yards passing....Hmmm... Wyoming gave you the ball five times! Oh, you are the first team to let Wyoming score a touchdown. The way I see it I don't think you should throw the first stone unless your Utes are perfect. Football isn't a perfect game. It sure is fun to watch though.
true blue | 7:44 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Hey!! nobody complained when the refs called the lame pass interference call on Oregon St. that led to the Utah win.

Plus the lame offensive PI called on Collie in the end zone when the defender was obviously grabbing on to his arm, stalled a BYU drive in the first half.

It was low scoring mostly because UNM did a good job running the ball. Good for the Lobos. Now it's time for TCU. Go cougars.
TO: "to the Ute Fans" | 7:47 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Oh you travel on business and hear everyone talk about BYU, where are you Mesa, AZ? Or are you clear out of Utah down in St George? Oh not quite that far, just made it to Nephi? Well keep up your busy travel schedule and good luck discovering more people who know all about BYU outside of "the bubble."

Sincerely,

Big Traveler
Agree | 7:51 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
with Sierra Blue. For anyone to expect BYU to blow out NM doesn't understand football. NM has been improving every week and is solid defensively. An 18 point win is very respectable. That being said, the Cougs, while doing a lot of good things, were not as consistent as we all want. However, I believe their ranking is justified, as is Utah's. Next up TCU, should be another tough test.
To"Lady/Man Cougar Fan" | 8:00 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Nice try on the "lady" thing, give me a break. How do BYU fans start by comparing a road score to a home score. Have you seen that UCLA and UW really are bottom of the barrel and you barely got by UW, they are horrible. BYU would have beat Wyoming on the road about the same way they beat USU. Stop the comparisons that aren't really comparisons, BYU is the epitomy of GREAT at home, mediocre on the road:)
Anonymous | 8:01 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
It is so obvious that the Ute fans who post negative comments are so jealous of BYU and their better record, better players, better coach and better fans. By the way, BYU WON THE GAME! Get over it and deal with it!
Utegrad - Cougarfan | 8:02 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
It was a tough win for the Cougs and I do agree that it won't impress ignorant pollsters in the East and the Cougs may drop in the polls. However, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Lobos knock off the Utes as they have done so many times before.
I don't think the Ute posters are giving the Lobos their due respect. Keep in mind that the Utes almost lost to Air Force, let Weber High score 21 points points on them and let UNLV hang with them for the first half and they are still ranked 14 and nobody seems to be mentioning that. Is it because of the qaulity win over Michigan (just lost to toledo) or the win over Oregon state (who handed the game to them by giving them a short field after a squib kick.) I think the Utes will lose at least two conference games (New Mexico and TCU)
Quest for Perfection? | 8:07 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Yes, it seems to me the the past three or four games they've come out of every one of them saying how it wasn't their best effort and have to play better next week. Yet, since UCLA, it seems every game has possibly been a little bit worse. But, maybe next week?
Stupid Ute Fans | 8:10 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
You know, you're not very convincing when you say things like "you have a weak schedule" or "that was a lackluster win." Last I checked, the only team you've played out of conference that still has a winning record is Weber State....WEBER STATE!!!! And what was the score of that game? 37-21. How did "mighty" Utah let Weber score 21 points?! I don't care about your stupid assessment of how BYU played...we rock, and we're gonna steam roll you in November.
Win is a WIn | 8:12 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
BYU is not going to show anything the last 2 weeks. Why should they...both teams were not that good. BYU will win on Thursday.
Tcoug | 8:34 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Funny how Ute fans like to post up on here when they still got scored on by the worst team in the Conference( Wyoming). Byu wins on its worst days and kills on it's average day. Ublah is all talk. Thanks to their defense and special teams they were able to score otherwise it would've been an overtime game(LOL).
Bob in line | 8:34 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I am one of those die hard BYU fans that doesn't think we are the 8th best in the nation. What ever though. My only hesitation is the fact I do not want to be another Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. If someone needs to get humiliated let that be Utah.

As for the Utes who play the '6 degrees of Kevin Bacon' to prove they are better than BYU; didn't Michigan lose to the former Lake Erie Community College, or was it Toledo? In either case, your big stellar win this year against Michigan isn't a top 14 performance either.

The 6 degrees game is fun when you compare say BYU or Utah to Oklahoma vie TCU. In the case of comparing BYU and Utah just wait until Nov then one side can talk all the smack they want.

Let me add one bit to consider. BYU is the most hated team in the nation. Most other teams are more excited at the prospects of beating BYU than they are Utah. For what ever that's worth.
BYU fan in the SEC | 8:35 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I'll admit that BYU didn't play nearly as well as they should have played (although NM is an underrated team) but you can't say that BYU doesn't deserve their ranking based on this performance. Ohio State only beat Purdue 16-3. Georgia only beat mediocre Tennessee 26-14. It's not uncommon to have high ranked teams occasionally lose to unranked and only mediocre teams. BYU is a great team. Utah is a great team. Let's hope both are undefeated for their Nov. matchup.
BD | 8:36 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I smell fear. The blue (red) print to beat the cougs is becoming more obvious as the weeks go on. Press the Y's receivers, bring heat and Hall can be rattled. Be physical on the lines. Be able to run tough inside. Throw it a little and expose BYUs pathetic DBs. Be decent on special teams. Hmmmm. What team 40 miles north does all that stuff better than any other team in the conference?

See you in November ladies.
TO: "to the Ute Fans" | 7:47 p.m | 8:38 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Just to echo the thoughts of a fellow cougar, I live on the East coast, and yes, people are very aware of what BYU is up to. Haven't heard much about the Utes though.
However, I sympathize, I have had a tough time swallowing the fact that you guys just might be decent this year; I am sure that it is difficult to admit that BYU just might be good as well.
Here's to an unbeaten November 22 (but deep down still hoping the Utes lose one or two along the way).

Ha! Got your goat! So evident in your defensive response. Hey I am a woman. Can't women read the sports page? Your Ute offense struggles every week. You don't have to be a man to see that. Thank goodness for you that you have Sakoda. How many field goals against Utah State? Who beat Oregon State? Hmmmm.... Special Teams. Sooner or later the offense has to kick in. You have New Mexico at New Mexico. 300 pound linemen from NM will give your yound D-line a game. It is a humbling experience.

This comment is for the BIG TRAVELER who responded to my comments!...clearly your comment is a "Utah Bubble" comment!

I live in Calif. and travel 100% of the time for my job all over the US and believe it or not...the world!! The people I talk to are colleagues, fellow travelers on planes & in airports & airline clubs that are trying to catch their team scores on game day!!

One of the most popular sports shows here in Southern Calif. called the BYU football program "one of the classiest in college football"...and that's a direct quote!

Would you believe the Coach of UNM just said in his post game comments..."I'm not here to talk about BYU, enough people talk about BYU!!" (guess I'm not alone!)

P.S. I'm a Cougar fan AND a true Laker fan...oooh...how can that be??? somehow that doesn't fit the Utah Bubble scenario...but your comments certainly do!!

Didn't BYU shut out Wyoming?

Didn't BYU score more than two offensive touchdowns against Wyoming?

Didn't BYU score their first TD and their first third down conversion against Wyoming before the last two minutes of the second half.

Get it out while you can Utes.

BYU is the best team in the State of Utah.

Utah will end up tied for third in conference again this year, behind BYU and TCU.
BYU #1 | 8:46 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I am making my official prediction that BYU will go to the title BCS bowl game. They will be National Champs this year. They are a national champ team. They are as good as any team that has played for BYU. One of the Best O lines in the country. One of the Best D's in the country. One of the best past efficiency ratings in the country. Yes, we are a little weak in the secondary but everyone knows underneath that we could take down Texas and Penn State and any other of those overrated Eastern teams.
OUCH!! | 8:47 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Why does it seem like the Cougs are getting worse as the weeks go by? Yea, they cleaned up the penalties this week, but to play as poorly as they did at home is disheartening. And I agree with a previous post that mentioned our DB's lining up 10-15 yards off the ball!!!??? The opposing team could run the exact same play (throw the ball out to the WR who is standing by himself 5 yards up the field along the sideline) every single down and get 8-15 yards every time because our DB's give them the same cushion every time. And for the love of all things holy, why must we throw the ball on 1st down almost every posession? When you've got a RB like Unga who averages 5 to 7 yards a touch, it makes no sense throwing the ball all the time on 1st down. NM figured out that time of posession is a key to beating BYU. Giving it to Unga defeats that strategy. SO GIVE IT TO UNGA FOR HEAVEN'S SAKES!!!!
Ye Zoobies | 8:51 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
are so over rated ! Get ready for Thursday night. TCU is going to show the nation just how over rated you are!
re: Lady Cougar Fan | 8:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I really don't think Utah fans can throw stones at BYU for BYU's performance. That said, I don't think you can complain about Utah's showing against WY. WY got to keep the ball that much longer because we would score on defense, and then kick it back to WY. That means the offense doesn't get to do anything. The TD WY scored was a "gimmee" as the receiver was clearly out of bounds, but we didn't contest it. Third, I doubt anybody's high power offense is going to do well in that WY weather. All of these factors kept the offensive yardage down.
