It looks like Utah offense finally gets going.
34-0 with plenty of time left in 3rd quarter.

You have to forgive me. I thought we were playing Salt Lake High when I made those comments. U of U is much more physical than BYU.
Re: SoCal | 3:10 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Ute offense didn't score until just before half.
Game scoring:
Defense: 6 points
Special Teams: 22 points
Offense: 12 points
Offense was a terrible display. Ludwig really needs to go.

Interesting....Wyo. Offense scored 3 Utah TD's.....Utah looked good??? Sakota is the real-deal, but two games in a row with inconsistent offense.....yet a win is a win....
WOW? | 3:41 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Fact 1- brian johnson is not a good QB
Fact 2- utah offense struggled all day although the ind did not help.
Fact 3- Utah has a good defense.
Fact 4- If this game was in SLC ute fans would have rushed the field against another 2 win team.
WOW?? | 3:42 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
meant to say wind on fact 2
Re: CowboyNationRules! | 3:43 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Thanks, that's a first class comment. Football is fun to watch but we all have to keep it in proper perspective.

Good luck to the Cowboys!

Ute Troll!
Question... | 3:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I didn't get to see the game. Clearly, the defense and special teams were amazing today. However, on the surface it looks like our offense didn't do much. Is that because they were really bad or is it because they didn't get the ball very often? That is, the defense did so much scoring, it would seem that Utah was kicking off to Wyo all afternoon.

Can someone give me the right picture?
Az ute | 3:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
This game should have been a shutout!! Clearly that Wyoming receiver was out of bounds with not one but both feet. I happen to think this was Kyle's gift to Wyoming for the onside kick in last years blowout win. He nor the official in the box wanted to review that play due to embarrassment for the cowboys play this afternoon.
Ok, as sad as it is for a diehard ute fan to admit, and as much as i love BJ for everything he has done for our program, he should be shown the pine. I love the kid, but he can't seem to take control of the offense. You can place blame on play-calling which i would agree with to a point, but are you kidding me we don't break 300 total yards against Wyoming!?!? Time to unleash our secret weapon, Mr. Corbin Louks. Its obvious to me the coach's are trying to keep the kids arm a secret, especially after i found his high school highlight tape.
Our defense is stellar and young! The special teams has really improved over the course of the year.

7- 0 Baby!
Call em the Crimson Crush
Re: SoCalUtahFan | 3:52 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Utah's offense is pathetic! Thank goodness Wyoming can't keep from giving the ball to Utah. 5 turnovers? Keep telling yourself the offense is getting it going...you might just convince yourself. But you would be the only one!
Utah | 3:53 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Utah did what they had to do. They smashed the cowgirls and will do the same to the puppies next week. BCS, for the second time. Guaranteed!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Utes!
Anonymous | 4:00 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Can we please quit running the sweep with Eddie Wide and Brent Casteel? We run it like 10 times every game and it has never produced more than a yard or two....so why do we keep going back to it? And why do we not only go back to it, but use it on almost every set of downs we have....please stop, it is a waste of a down, it never works! Great job by the special teams and the defense!
Great win | 4:05 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Now that The Utes called of the dogs against Wyoming and did not review a controversial Wyoming Td, can we officially bury the onside kick thing?
I know the y fans will hate to do that they love to bring up the on sides kick, unlv game and dropping an unexpected game. But really what's the point anymore?

Offense | 4:28 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
will be needed to defeat the big boys in the conference. Watch out for TCU's defense. There isn't a team with such great defense in the whole conference.

Michigan lost at home to lowly Toledo. Looks like anyone can win at the big house this year.
Wyoming shoud leave MWC | 4:29 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Wyoming is a disgrace to the MWC. WYO should be replaced with either BSU or FSU. After 10 years of MWC championships in all mens and womens sports, WYO is last among the 9 members having won only 2 championships. Utah and BYU have combined for 148 ( U 39 and Y 109). WYO brings nothing to MWC; no competitive teams; no attendence at games; no TV; no national prestige; & mediocre academics. WYO should be in Big Sky with the Montana schools or in a conference with N & S Dakota.
Louks Time | 4:41 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I can't figure out why Louks doesn't get more playing time in a game like this. Johnson was not playing very well, and they were in no danger of losing in the second half. If this kid is going to be the future starting quarterback it's time to get him some live reps. The coaches' attachment to Johnson defies all reason.
SoCalUtahFan | 4:46 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008

Well, when it was 34-0, I thought...finally, the offense scored 2 straight TD, may be it would get going. Obviously, it was a little premature.

But, a win is still a win. I'll take it.
Tough | 5:08 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
schedule still to come. No game coming up will be easy. They will need to sharpen their game or they will not survive the remaining schedule.

brian johnson has taken too many hits, he does not have the poise to run the team right now

the byu fan that wants wyo to leave the conference just doesn't like having to go to laramie
and he should be the last to complain about academics

The average fan isn't stupid enough to pop off at halftime
Matt A. | 5:41 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Why continue to batter the offense? Anyone who watches Utah play knows the Utes have only an average offense. Anyone who watches the Utes play knows the offense isn't going to improve. As all coaches and athletes say, "it is what it is." However, it can't be understated that despite their offensive deficiencies this team knows how to win football games. This team wins with defense and special teams. In other words, they win ugly. Teams such as last year's Hawaii and this year's BYU are aesthetically pleasing to watch. Yet, despite a horde of impressive offensive statistics, football fans are always left wondering if they're more glamour than substance. Consider this Utah team substance. They're a BCS quality team. They just win differently than the '04 team did.
Wiley Old School | 5:51 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Kyle has now just fully atoned for last year's onsides kick - by not calling for a review of the Wyo touchdown that was so clearly out of bounds. Now those Cowboys are off their shutout shneid... thanks to Kyle Whittingham of all people! :-)

I find it hard to believe anyone takes you serious. Ever
Give Offense a Break | 6:42 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
For those of you looking at the offensive yardage, you're missing most of the story. The offense didn't tear it up against WY because they didn't get a chance. If the Defense scores a touchdown, you don't get to play, hence no yardage.

You also have to look at the weather. With that wind, the passing game was limited to short passes. That is going to cut the offensive yardage as well.

They didn't fumble the ball or throw any interceptions, so I would say that is also a big improvement. They played another game almost penalty free. Both of these were big weaknesses at the beginning of the year. The turnovers was a big weakness against Oregon St. I would like to see Brian Johnson improve his pass completion efficiency, but again, this game is a bad game to look at that with the wind blowing like it did.

As long as the team keeps improving, and they keep the turnovers and penalties to a minimum, I believe this team can become BCS ready. Frankly they are already there if you consider the caliber of some of the BCS conferences (PAC 10, Big 10, Big East, & ACC)!
Here come high IQ Byu fans | 6:46 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
So what is more impressive U's win AT Wyoming or BYU's home win over Wyoming or New Mexico? No questions who is emerging as the stronger team. BYU barely mustered 21 against New Mexico???? go figure, who knew those Lobos were so tough:)

Here is the key BYU is a great great home team but when they hit the road it becomes VERY obvious how mediocre they really are. I mean look at what teams are doing to UW at UW. BYU needed a cheap call to win. Cougars will lose on the road this season, not even a question.

BYU officially the worst 8th ranked team EVER:)
come on guys | 6:46 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
we all know byu is better than utah because they beat wyoming 44-0 when utah only beat them 40-7. well now that thats settles.

Direct comparison of scores doesn't necessarily mean anything. And the game was at Wyoming. BYU played Wyoming at home. It's a wash.

Today's game | 7:15 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I thought the commentators said it perfectly- that the Utes play to the level of their opponent.... Especially the offense. They have a ton of offensive weapons, but have not played to their potential yet this year. It seems that a lot of it starts with Brian Johnson- his inconsitency is the only thing he is consistent at.
BJ | 7:20 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Johnson gets nailed once and he plays rattled the rest of the game. Offense struggled but the defense and special teams were impressive. Let's keep this in perspective, Wyoming is a very poor team. You could tell by the amount of fan support in the stands. I've seen bigger crowds at a high school game.
go king louie | 7:22 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
when are we going to use the old utah pass. if bj cant handle that let louie do it he does everything else
Ute Man | 7:22 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
If you call 40-7 struggling? How 'bout 21-3, now that sounds like a struggling effort to me!
And more importantly, how will this show, in the polls? Hopefully it will show, with BYU dropping out of the top 10, obviously a place they did not belong, in the first place!

Oh and re: come on guys

Utah beat Oregon State, which beat USC, so, you're saying Utah is better than USC? Why thank you, I thought so too!
Re: Give Offense a break | 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
I'll agree that the wind was a factor, but it was only a minor one. Look at the box score and several things stick out. 2.8 yards average per carry to begin with compared to Wyoming's 4.4. It is an embarrassment when you consider the talent level of the Utes compared to Wyoming.
The fact of the matter is that Ludwig isn't very good at his job. You can tell what the play is by the formation, the blocking schemes are generally weak, pass patterns weak and plays generally take to long to develop. I have to cut Johnson some slack because his quarterback coach (Ludwig) obviously doesn't help refine his technique and understanding of the offense. Thus, Johnson hasn't developed to his potential. I am afraid New Mexico will beat the Utes if they don't correct Johnson coming up from the snap locked on his intended receiver.
PLEASE!!! | 7:43 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
UNM is one of the better teams in the conference. Utah always struggles against them. Wyoming truly is pathetic. UNLV will beat them this year.

BYU has a target on their backs. Everyone is pulling tricks to try to beat them. UNM is a great team and played so well today. Wyoming shot themselves in the foot, but it's very impressive to get 40 against them on the road. Both teams had great wins! USU on the other hand will never do anything in this world.
Congratulations on your win! | 7:53 p.m. Oct. 11, 2008
Congratulations on your win today...great game.

I must say after reading the "Here come High IQ BYU fan" comments...

Normally I don't comment on Ute articles but could not resist when you and all the other Utes are quick to point out how bad Washington and UCLA are doing this year. I saw the headline on the ESPN article and just had to post it!

"Struggling Michigan takes first loss to MAC team, off to worst start in 41 years" (lost to TOLEDO!!)

It seems it is so easy to look at BYU opponents and say how bad they are. How about looking at your own wins before you judge others.

See you on Nov 22nd! May the best team win!

Respectable win against a lousy team. But, c'mon offense, let's get it going or we are going to be in big trouble. We can't keep relying on King Louie, Special teams and the D. Offensive needs to be more consistent. I'm way disappointed with BJ, he made some bad throws and looks slow. I'd like to see Louks get more reps.
