The reality is that UTA does not know how to run a public transportation system. This sounds good, for Salt Lake, but what about the rest of the counties UTA gets tax funds from? Its a waste of tax payers money to keep feeding this white elephant transportation system. The state should take it over and provide a real public transportation system. I don't know what they are bragging about as a speedy service, it takes 2-4 hours to get from one side of SL to the other side. Their dream is flawed and so is UTA and TRAX. But everyone can dream. Instead of polling users, why don't we poll the rest of the state and find out why we don't use public transportation? It's unreliable, its very time consuming, it doesn't go where we need to go, and a familiy can't afford to use it.

Now we're talking, it's only sad that these great ideas take so long to get to the desert. Zipcar and the idea of car sharing has been discussed in SLC for almost 10 years now, and when Rocky talked about it people just laughed. The good news, and it is good news, is that the conversation has now hit the press. Thank you Des. News for putting this in front of the community--now its up to us to push to make sure these ideas are actually implemented.

Salt lake is a 1200 pound Blood-sucking Vampire Hog that isn't sharing, but hogging regional transportation investment.

As Salt lake casts around to grab more and more of the regional investment, we are putting large parts of our region in danger in this dangerous world, because there is no money left for a reasonable sharing of freeway availability. Salt Lake City has grabbed the most and the best of everything, leaving nothing for other areas. The bone-headed all rails lead to Rome UTA system is a pitiful effort at reincarnating the once great privately owned and run rail systems of a century ago.

UTA is only too happy to provide the hogs the most and best of transit because downtown's concentration of government offices and big businesses and the U of U and other colleges are where it is easy for transit to "succeed", especially as UTA gives millions of dollars of transit service away to the hogs. Yes, bring UTA under control by shutting them down and parceling out the pieces, just like the bank takeovers we have just seen.... the sooner the better!

I want to go back to school and prefer going to the U - but the commute & parking is definitely a turn-off. Think it is a good idea.

Zipcar works well here in DC. In fact I was just researching zipcars for a trip to Monticello on Columbus Day... And they also offer free memberships to college students if the university will give up a few parking spots to secure zipcars. I'm glad someone is finally moving on this in Utah!

Stop with this nonsense of needing more transportation options. We simply need to get rid of the hundred thousand or so illegals that are clogging up the roadways, grocery lines, bank lines, schools etc. The best day Utah has had for transportation was May 1st a couple of years ago when the illegals didn't go to work and were all downtown crying over their rights. Traffic was great! That's how it would be every day if we weren't so COMPASSIONATE toward illegals. It's not a popular suggestion but it's reality. I propose NO MORE tax dollars going toward expanded transportation methods. I only propose getting the clutter (illegals) off our roads.

The three car share operations listed are all for-profit organizations. If these are the ones SLC/UTA/UofU are hoping to get on board, it will not be done at taxpayer expense (other than maybe some startup costs). Most car sharing is either non-profit or for-profit and supported by membership and usage fees. I only found one instance, in Bremerton WA, where the transit agency itself ran the car share operation. Sounds like a great idea for SLC and no skin off the nose of those not interested in participating.

wow... "We don't need more." It seems you may be one of those cookies that crumble a little too much. Other transportation options are needed in this state. In the early turn of the century Utah was revered for their public transportion which went from Logan down to St. George. Lucky for us GM and Ford decided to by all the Trolleys out of commision and force people to revert to cars. Utah is just trying to get that option back.

Coming from Philadelphia and New York, where public transportation is used very often, Salt Lake losses a lot of that city feeling because there is no connection and people refuse to get out and walk any wheres... even if its two blocks over. By the way, I'm white so please don't bother responding with any hoopla. I have other things to do then check back to see if their are comments made.

If I drive the car only for 30 min to my workplace where I work for 9 hours then return it to the place where I picked it up. That would cost me about 100 dollars a day.
