Layton going to find holes in the strong Syracuse D (returning 21/22 starters from last year) & Layton's own D (only 2 returning D from last year)will keep the Syracuse O to their usual low scoring nights. The last 5 games, Layton has given up an avg of 11 pts/game. But Syracuse has given up only 9 pts/game.

Layton's offense is looking to continue to explode as injuries are starting to heal and the team continuity is starting to mesh. Syracuse, is looking for revenge, as last year, Layton beat them on their own turf, in a torrent downpour, where Syracuse almost beat 1 of the top ranked teams in the state.

The home crowd will be a plus for Layton, where thousands pour in every home game to support their team. Syracuse only beat Clearfield & Viewmont by a TD.

Layton wins 26-9.

Thought this was worth posting here....so it wouldn't get buried in all the other posts & to get more discussion going.

*** UPSET SPECIALS? Could it be? Typically, upsets aren't as plentiful in high school, let alone to actually guess an upset correctly. So, anybody want to take a stab at an upset in these 5A games?

Bingham @ Riverton
Syracuse @ Layton
Pleasant Grove @ Spanish Fork
Jordan @ Brighton
Hillcrest @ Alta (HA!! just kidding!)

My UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK, for whatever reason other than maybe it's just the way the ball bounces, and home field advantage (along with the fact that their offense is explosive & I expect a shootout):

Riverton over Bingham 34-32

Any others? 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A???? Come on....somebody else stick their necks out.
trash talker? | 4:26 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Where in the world are those trash talking going to dominate GUNNISON BULLDOGS? Are you guys going to wait until you find a sport that you can finally go over .500 in before you start that non stop trash talk we had to put up with all spring? Tell us more about how you are going dominate 2a as soon as we get realignment. You aren't even playing good 1a football or volleyball. I'm betting it will be the same for basketball and wrestling.

to alta, but personally i think cottonwood should be ranked over them but thats just my opinion and honestly, i am not a fan
RE: True Blue Layton Fan | 6:39 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
First I dont know why you always are bashing on Bingham and picking them to lose...They are not going to they will win by at least 20. You obviously dont know anything about Riverton other than what some of these articles tell you.

And Second, Your not a writer for the des news so stop acting like it!
gary | 6:48 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Sky View's QB did not play at Highland due to an injury which made the difference in the game
Re: True Blue Layton Clown | 7:47 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Dude - Have you seen Bingham play? That won't be much of a game with Riverton Friday night. I hope Bingham meets Layton in the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs...then you'll become a believer. The Alta / Bingham championship game this year will be a good one.
American Fork?? | 8:16 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Who votes on this thing? American Fork was clobbered by Spanish Fork and you guys rank them ahead of Spanish Fork one week later? Do you even put any thought into this?
to gary | 8:21 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Lundberg did just fine. It wouldn't have made any difference. Highland was ready for us. They out manned us and shut down our RB as well. All of the shoulda-coulda-woulda's won't replace that loss. Just hope we're ready for the next two games.
To Gary | 8:27 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Injuries are part of the game. A team's rank is based on wins and losses not on who did or didn't play. Good teams find a way to win in spite of injuries.
ALTA Fan/Old Coach | 8:30 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008

Alta 72 - Hillcrest - 0.

And how Bingham is still in the top 10 is totally ridiculous. The only thing scarier and scarier about Bingham is how their always adored by the media. Get off it already will ya? They've lost two games and will more than likely lose again before the playoffs.

I just hope Layton thinks they're ready in November.
kidding right | 8:31 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
you got east as the second ranked 4A team if I remember right it took a miracle for them to beat snow canyon the 4th best region 9 team including 3A its allright everyone knows these rankings are a joke they are just fun to look at and make fun of
kidding right | 8:33 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
east should be 8th not 3rd i guess your just trying to hype the game this weekend
Thanks | 8:34 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Thanks to the Bingham fans, they are an endless supply of bulletin board material. Contrary to their belief there are more than 2 quality high school football programs in Utah. Obviously they have forgotten their loss to Skyline.
El Dons | 8:37 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Its okay. Rank everybody above us. We were picked to lose to AF and Timpanogos. Were most likely picked to lose to PG. Bring it on. The underdog DONS are gonna represent on Friday.
HSFAN | 8:48 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Ah!!!....the proverbial "DNEWS BCSesque BUSTER POLLOCK JOKE"!

Come on Dnews...Cottonwood is definetly better than Layton and proved it...but they can't beat Bingham, and the Timp Whimps are the kings of Utah County, but couldn't beat ALTA or Bingham!
Predictions....
Watch as Syracuse dumps Layton!
And Bingham will lite up Riverton 45-3
East will stun Cottonwood!
Timp will knock off another 3A team!
And the Skyline Seagles will lose another one!
Re: ALTA Fan/Old Roach | 8:58 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Keep it up. Bingham can't wait for another chance to tear into the Hawks. It WILL have a different outcome. Bring it on.
HS Fan | 8:59 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Ok,

For Upset TBLF, I give Syracuse or SF the higher odds. I have seen them all. Rivertons O is good, but say what you will Bingham is tough. Brighton is a joke, so count Jordan a win.

SF if they throw a ton I can see that happening. As for 'cuse i dont really expect them to beat Layton but it seems to me that Region 1 may be the top to bottom toughest region, but everyone is mediocre (at the moment). If Jackson continues to impress then I give it to Layton, but really, Layton should have lost to Northridge who did lose to Syracuse. I guess I give the Region 1 nod to Layton, only because they are better then the rest of averages.

Pretty much 5A is ALL average, even Alta, they have no O line, and no RB. No real power house this year in 5A.
Re: Thanks | 9:04 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Yes. There are alot of other quality programs in the state. That first loss to Skyline with all the Bingham suspensions was a fluke. It has been talked about way to much. But Skyline how about that American Fork cavemen loss(24-20). Now there is a scary bunch. Nuf said.
RedDevils? | 9:07 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
5 straight wins, one over 4-2 Orem and you clowns give them 5 votes? ha ha ha
Re Different outcome | 9:19 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Alta will be in the championship game....Question is will Bingham? You can't even get past Skyline! And don't give me suspensions....Skyline lit you up...get ready for Syracuse(the best team in region 1). When you are done making up excuses and play some football, Alta will see you in the finals!
EAST | 9:25 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
East will beat Cottonwood this frieday!

My rankings after week 7

5A

1. Alta: Hawks continue to dominate.
2. Layton: Big game against surging Syracuse awaits the Lancers.
3. Bingham: 0-2 start is all but a distant memory now.
4. Pleasant Grove: Vikings showed they know how to win close games with tough test against Lone Peak.
5. Jordan: Beetdiggers are starting to turn up the heat at the right time.
6. Syracuse: Titans looking like anything but a second year team.
7. Riverton: Do the Silverwolves have what it takes to steal region 3 from Bingham?
8. Northridge: two weaks, two overtime losses, to two good teams. The knights need to put it back together and fast.
9. Skyline: Eagles should make the playoffs where they usually do better than expected.
10. Lone Peak: This is the first time I have ever moved a team into the top 10 after a loss, but the Knights were impressive against a TOUGH PG team.

My Rankings After week 7

4A-

1. Timpview: T-Birds now hold the record for most consecutive wins. Congrats to Timpview.
2. Cottonwood: Showdown with East will provide us with the Region 6 Champion.
3. Pine View: Another win for the Panthers in their quirky 4A/3A region.
4. Sky View: With the Bobcats not having their starting QB, Sky View looks kind of vulnerable.
5. Mountain Crest: One game to go before the Mustangs travel North for a Cache Valley Classic.
6. East: Leopards can prove how good they are with a huge upset over Cottonwood on Friday.
7. Dixie: Flyers picking up momentum at the right time.
8. Bountiful: Bounced back nicely with a big win over surging Woods Cross.
9. Highland: Rams in unfamiliar territory as the 3rd best team in Region 6.
10. Springville: Devils are showing they were no fluke.
FRiDAY NiGHT RiDER | 9:32 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Sorry True Blue, but Bingham won't lose to Riverton, although I do think it will be close. I would say Spanish Fork over PG but the Vikings got their close game out of them last week, so I am going with Pleasant Grove. I don't think Brighton has a prayer against Jordan. I think the best opportunity for the upset is Syracuse over Layton (and Syracuse didn't beat Viewmont btw) but with the way Layton pulled out close wins over Davis and Northridge, I can't see that one happening either. I think the best chance of an upset comes in 4A with Bountiful and Sky View, but, Bountiful will have to play a near perfect game to win that one. You also have the potential "upset" (if you can even call it that) of East over Cottonwood!
Dixie Flyers | 9:33 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Interesting, my guess is that 95% of the voters live in Northern Utah since you rank a 4-3 AF team that lost to SF and yet Dixie who's only losses came to two out of state teams (both of which won their championships last year)still hasn't made it back on. This week's game vs Pine View should be a good one.
Delta Fan | 9:34 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Delta Rocks!!!!! They are going to be strong contenders in 3A. GO RABBITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous | 9:35 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Alta has a huge chip on their shoulders. They really have nothing to gain and everything to lose. If they win people expected it but if they lose everyone will call them overrated. Syracuse IS NOT the best team in region 1 and people like them just cause they are a second year school. Syracuse will lose at least two more of their region games. They will make the playoffs though. Davis is going to win out in region and end up second behind Layton, just watch.
Bruce | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
East will upset Cottonwood this friday!
ALTA FAN | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I have watched Bingham on Comcast. They are an above average team but they are also in a very weak region. I agree with HS Fan, this years crop of teams in 5A are not that strong especially compared to last year. The Last year top two teams Alta and Layton were two of the best teams this state has seen in 10 years. As for rankings, Timpview still has to be beat, until then I agree they should be #1. But I seriously daubt they could beat Alta. If Bingham was in Region 1 I would rank them 4 in region 1 behind Layton, Syracuse and Northridge. Region 1 is and always has been a very tough region.
Observation | 9:47 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
East has NO chance against Cottonwood. East has won some games, but were lucky, including the Snow Canyon game. No one, except, Timpview, will give Cottonwood a game.

Also, Pine View has beaten several lousy teams, but gets destroyed by Cottonwood and should have lost to 3A Hurricane, if their coach just kicks a field goal from the 3 yard line. They are way over rated. The competition down south is bad this year.
RHS, BHS, AHS, THS, LHS | 10:12 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Bingham will kill Riverton. Region 3 is weak, with Bingham the only team that is far and above the rest. Riverton coaching will once again go into the game "truly believing" that the Wing-T offense will finally baffle the bigger stronger Bingham D. It won't. Wing-T would only work in 4-A, successfully. It cannot compete with the bigger Alta's, Bingham's, PG's, and Line Peaks. The reason why Bingham stacks their preseason schedule every year is because its region is horrible. Likewise with Alta. If Bingham and Alta padded their preseason like Timpview maybe they would be the teams with the record. Timpview is heavily overrated. They are #4 in the state not #1. Behind Alta, Layton, and Bingham. All three of those teams would hammer Timpview. Anyway, if you want to see a league of differences in offenses come watch Coach Peck and Lambourne show Coach Miller how things are done in bigger leagues. It may have worked "once" at 4A Olympus, but not at 5A. That is why Riverton has never made it out of the first round of the playoffs in their now 9th year of existence. Bingham 45 Riverton 14.
RE: True Blue Layton Fan | 10:14 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Viewmont beat Syracuse 13-7 in the Region One opener at Viewmont. That is Syracuse only league loss thus far.
HAHAHA! THIS POLL IS A JOKE! | 10:18 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
This top 25 ranking is a joke! First off, Cottonwood should be 2nd ranked if not tied with Timpview. They beat 2 top 5 teams (Layton and Pineview) and will handily whip a third top 10 team, East. When Alta lost to an out of state team, they didn't move in their #2 ranking. However, when SkyView lost to Highland, Idaho by a couple of points, they dropped 5 whole spots and they are the only team in 4A that will compete with Timpview and Cottonwood for the championship. What about undefeated Delta? They should be in the top 10. Please be fair across the board! I can't believe 4-3 teams are ranked ahead of them. This poll falls in the trap of "who have they played?" mantra.

To: HAHAHA! | 10:53 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Sky View has no chance of competing with Timpview or Cottonwood, or Mountain Crest for that matter. Keep dreaming
Hey True Blue | 11:00 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
You have picked an upset over Bingham 3 weeks in a row. First you smell one vs. WJ, in what turned out to be the biggest mis-match in 5A this year. Then you smell it again vs. Kearns, with another Bingham beat down. Now you are picking Riverton. Keep it up, you are good luck for the Miners. We all know the REAL reason you keep picking against them, is because in the back of you mind you think they might be THAT good. That is the only reason you have posted dozens of times that Bingham is overrated. For your sake, I hope you are right. I am smelling a very 'blue' day if you get a chance to play them.
To Dixie Flyers | 11:03 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I think that Dixie would much rather break the losing streak to PV this week, than worry about being ranked in an unimportant top 25 list. Dixie needs to believe they can win against PV, and then do it. There seems to be a mental block because of passed losses, that they can't hang with PV. Hopefully this is the year they pull off the upset.
Mr True Blue man of knowledge | 11:08 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Ridicules!!!!You asked for upsets. The only game that will be within 3 TDs is the Syracuse v. Layton. I do think Layton has a chance to pull off that upset, but it will be close.

Bingham @ Riverton=BLOWOUT
Syracuse @ Layton ???who is favored????
Pleasant Grove @ Spanish Fork=BLOWOUT
Jordan @ Brighton=BLOWOUT
Hillcrest @ Alta (HA!! just kidding!)=BLOWOUT
Voters | 11:15 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Here are some stats for consideration.

Spanish Fork held American Fork to -20 yards(that's negative) rusing and Timpanogos to -40 yards rushing.

How in the world you have some of these teams in the top 25 and others not just amazes me. Oh, I know half of the voters have probably on been out to a couple of games all year.
FRiDAY NiGHT RiDER | 11:16 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
I think that just because Bingham lost their first two games, everyone thinks they are overrated. No one should overlook the Miners.
To: Observation | 11:31 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Maybe it oughta be "blind observation." Of course East has a chance; they're 6-1. Lucky? Sure they had some luck, but so did Cottonwood against Layton. So did Timpview against PG. Is Cottonwood the favorite? Sure, but East NO chance? Come on.

Nice try with the PV thing, but there was no field goal from the 3 yard line in the Hurricane/PV game that would have given the game to Hurricane. Pv, Cottonwood and MC had the toughest preseason schedules in 4A, so you must be a homer for a school ranked below them.

Alta WHO?? | 11:45 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Instead of Alta having their constant inferiority complex of being in Timpview's shadow both locally and nationally, one must ask this question:

What big wins does Alta have? Sure they played some school from California and then subsequently embarrassed the state and lost.

They beat Bingham who also lost to a Skyline team which has lost to a 4A team. So a Bingham victory is fairly equal to Timpview's win over PG.

Bottom line, Timpview is the best program/team in state. Every unbiased observer has made that conclusion. So Alta needs to move on.
RE: ALTA FAN | 9:40 a.m. Oct. 7, | 11:51 a.m. Oct. 7, 2008
There goes another Layton fan pretending to be ALTAFAN. Most of us have figured it out, but if you are new, here are a few sure fire ways to tell.

1. They will always give props to Alta. Here is the key, they will do this by saying BOTH teams are great.

"The Last year top two teams Alta and Layton were two of the best teams this state has seen in 10 years" Since Alta lost to Bingham and Layton lost to both Jordan and Alta makes it hard to say best "2" teams in 10 years. Skyline and Timpview had some unbeaten teams. Bingham was unbeaten in 2006. A real Altafan would only mention Alta.

2. They will always reference Region 1.

3. They will always say Bingham is overrated. Easy to say, since Layton has not had to play them. Layton has always been sub .500 until last year.

#2 and #3 were covered in one statement, "If Bingham was in Region 1 I would rank them 4 in region 1 behind Layton, Syracuse and Northridge. Region 1 is and always has been a very tough region." Seriously what Alta fan cares about Region 1.

Balanced | 12:15 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Riverton will upset Bingham this week by running a balanced attack. This is the first group at Riverton that is able to run and pass. Watch this Friday as the Bingham team loses its cool and plays undisciplined football which you always see in Bingham losses. Riverton 27 Bingham 21 with Bingham having 4 turnovers and 4 unsportsmanslike penalties.
To: East | 12:22 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
If your team plays half as bad as you spell FRIDAY, you are in some serious trouble, bro. Even if you could spell your way out of a paper sack you have no prayer of beating Cottonwood on Friday. And, you shot yourself in the foot by beating Highland because you will have to play Timpview week two of the playoffs, that is if you can win week one, which you failed miserably at last year. We will just be happy to say good riddance to you either week one or week two. We will save you some seats in the Timpview section at Rice Eccles so you can help cheer them on again this year as they take state.
My unbiased rankings | 12:40 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008
Here are my rankings.

1 - Timpview
2 - Timpview J.V.
3 - Cottonwood
4 - Bingham
5 - Pleasant Grove
6 - Timpview Sophomore team
7 - Layton
8 - Juan Diego
9 - Alta
10 -Manti

There you have it. As far as my unbiased report goes, you could have the 2000 St. Louis Rams, The 1985 Chicago Bears defense, and Chuck Norris as your quarterback............Timpview would beat yall into submission

and to all the loud and obnoxious 5A fans, until you can beat a 4A team or some out of state team from Hawaii or California.....SHHHHHhhhhhhhh.....

To Alta Who?

If Alta doesn't play anyone than who are these incredible teams that TimpView plays? Alta and Bingham intentionally try to schedule the hardest pre-region line-up possible. They go out of state, and they play eachother.

Alta has tried to schedule T-View a couple of times and the "mighty" T-Birds reject them. Lets come up with a new arguement.
